3761  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Does anyone know power on surge levels for S9 models? on: April 11, 2019, 06:16:40 PM
Oh, and if you want to measure powerline surges a 'scope is overkill unless you are doing detailed analysis. A multi-meter or amp-clamp that has a peak-hold function is all you need.

But if he has a digital scope lying around, let him post the pics! I want to see it too... Also from other newer models.

If you have a large operation with hundreds or thousands of units and there is a quick power fluctuation giving a quick off/on situation, that little burst a single unit does is multiplied... Would be nice to have an adjustable delay "protector" or such.
3762  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon A10 series announced on: April 11, 2019, 06:07:41 PM
Just noticed, this is using 16nm chips!

Quote from the product page:

240 x A3205 Third Gen 16nm ASIC

Very well, i hope, really that they also plan to come with a 12nm part and 7nm part. MicroBT is good competition but more is netter.

I'm not very sure $1200 for 31T will look very enticing vs, say. 33T for $785 (especially with that tax in the US), but lets see who makes the first independent review, maybe its quiet or can be made more efficient.

Model NameAvalonMiner 10

I know they might just want to sound "advanced" and all, but that description is kinda scary. AI System On Chip? What else does that thing do besides handling the Asics?

PS: Repost per request of moderator.
3763  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is fork? on: April 11, 2019, 04:44:46 PM
You have to understand Free Open Source software to understand what a fork is.
When you use free open source software, you might want to do things differently to what the author intended. You might have a great idea the author hates, well you can go ahead and modify it and distribute your version, that is the freedom of open source, and is "a fork".

There is also the fork in a blockchain, but that is similar to a fork in a road.

A "soft fork" means the country dirt road you were following might become paved from that point on, even if your horses where fine walking over dirt, it now allows bicycles and automobiles to move faster.

A "hard fork" means the country dirt road now splits in two, one is exactly the same, the other one is paved from that point on. Of course "forks" might now always be better, they can be worse...

Examples:

BCH forked from BTC, and then BCHABC/BCHSV from BCH...
Libreoffice forked from Openoffice, Xorg forked from Xfree86...

Freedom allows anyone to do a fork, that doesn't mean it will always succeed. And sometimes even the fork ideas get implemented in the original.

3764  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How does USDT wallet change our live? on: April 11, 2019, 03:40:05 PM
Some of the Top usdt wallets are -

MyEtherwallet: MyEtherWallet (MEW) is a free, open-source tool for creating wallets that work with the Ethereum platform.

OmniWallet: OmniWallet is a web wallet that supports BTC, OMNI, USDT, MAID, SAFEX, AMP, ALT.

Tether Wallet: Tether wallet is a Web-based official wallet used to store USDT.

Which one of these lets you send USDT without having to pay tx fees in either ETH or BTC? Can people still open accounts for the official online Tether wallet?
3765  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Are Stablecoins A Necessary Evil? on: April 11, 2019, 03:33:31 PM
I honestly feel that stablecoins like Tether etc are indeed a necessary evil. They do pose problems for the cryptocurrency market(Tether controversy etc), but they will still be in demand as long as the market is extremely volatile.

Once the volatility lowers in the long term, the demand for these coins will most likely fall which is why they are a necessary evil at present.

They are especially useful if you live in a country where you don't get free access to those fiat currencies which is nearly none in this world, but for those unfortunate souls that have to live under the oppression of a socialist economy, they are indeed quite useful, if only for trading inside an exchange.

Ironically i have found them unsuitable for normal coin use, what with them needing a second crypto just to pay fees. Most of them need to pay tx fees in Etherereum, which is a big letdown for regular use.

I mean, if you are going to bother having to fill your wallet with both Ethereum and, say, usdc, why not just stick to ETH alone? Sure its safer to use someone else's big blockchain, but you must admit its a major inconvenience, unless you went and teach everyone how to use a token with its parent coin; or worse, tell them to use the online wallet of an exchange that "magically" hides these fees (in another coin) from them.
3766  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why so many people say "Muslims are terrorists" Should we say that? on: April 11, 2019, 01:53:10 PM
Is it any statement on the Quaran states that,if someone won't agree to convert into Islams they have to excecute them?
Then why all those arabic countries have non muslim citizens.

https://quran.com/9/5
"And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

Some Muslims are good DESPITE their religion and will not kill another human being regardless of what ALLAH (or any other imaginary God) 'said' in the HOLY book.

Hmm this reminds me of, i don't know, Moses? Then you may join Jews, Christians and Muslims together because they are all descendants from Abraham, and they all abhorred polytheism (that was the era when humanity went from poly- to mono-theism). If you read the bible you will find many passages like that... By no accident Islam pays respect to the likes of Jesus and the prophets from Judaism...

"In the name of religion" many atrocities have been committed in the past, but (genuine) religion is not about committing atrocities...

I will cite these, just for reference:

Those who act kindly in this world will have kindness.
1.Islam. Qur'an 39.10

God enjoins justice, kindness, and charity to one's kindred, and forbids indecency, abomination, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.
6.Islam. Qur'an 16.90

Treat people in such a way and live amongst them in such a manner that if you die they will weep over you; alive they crave for your company.
10.Islam (Shiite). Nahjul Balagha, Saying 9

Anas and 'Abdullah reported God's Messenger as saying, "All [human] creatures are God's children, and those dearest to God are those who treat His children kindly."
19.Islam. Hadith of Baihaqi

A man once asked the Prophet what was the best thing in Islam, and the latter replied, "It is to feed the hungry and to give the greeting of peace both to those one knows and to those one does not know."
21.Islam. Hadith of Bukhari

The best deed of a great man is to forgive and forget.
2.Islam (Shiite). Nahjul Balagha, Saying 201

If you efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! God is forgiving, merciful.
4.Islam. Qur'an 64.14

Moses son of Imran said, "My Lord, who is the greatest of Thy servants in Thy estimation?" and received the reply, "The one who forgives when he is in a position of power."
11.Islam. Hadith of Baihaqi

Better and more rewarding is God's reward to those who believe and put their trust in Him: who avoid gross sins and indecencies and, when angered, are willing to forgive... Let evil be rewarded by like evil, but he who forgives and seeks reconciliation shall be rewarded by God. He does not love the wrongdoers.... True constancy lies in forgiveness and patient forbearance.
12.Islam. Qur'an 42.36-43

It may be that God will ordain love between you and those whom you hold as enemies. For God has power over all things; and God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
8.Islam. Qur'an 60.7

The good deed and the evil deed are not alike. Repel the evil deed with one which is better, then lo!, he between whom and you there was enmity shall become as though he were a bosom friend.
But none is granted it save those who are steadfast, and none is granted it save a person of great good fortune.
16.Islam. Qur'an 41.34-35

According to Anas, after the Messenger of God said, "Help your brother whether he is oppressor or oppressed," Anas replied to him, "O Messenger of God, a man who is oppressed I am ready to help, but how does one help an oppressor?" "By hindering him doing wrong," he said.
20.Islam. Hadith of Bukhari

There is a lot more. Judging an entire religion from ignorance only leads to hatred. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere...
Also think from a historic viewpoint. What was around by the time the religion was founded? And what were the customs and culture it replaced?
3767  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain introduces the Antminer S17 Pro, Antminer S17, and the Antminer T17 on: April 11, 2019, 12:18:00 PM
I think that a small miner ( for example one antminer s9 ++++ with the same chips of this ) will be interesring for normal user...for example... a miner with 12 TH and 500 watt with a cost of 600/800 usd is perfect. ( 36 TH ( low power mode ) /3 = 12 ,  1300w /3 = 433 watt , 2366 usd /3 =788 usd....)
One this hypotetical miner is perfect for me..... for my home, for the home of most user...
Real decentralization for all people,  not only farm.
I don't know if is possible.. but i hope yes.

Actually the solution to this is very simple: buy used when they start breaking. You don't need all 3 asic boards, just get one with 2 or one in working condition... The last miner for the home was the R4, sadly. Their only market are industrial warehouse miners where noise and power doesn't matter.

Buy a damaged S17 with a single working Asic board and put it inside a box like in Philipma's garage and you are gold. Don't worry, they'll break soon enough, they always do... And i hope by that time BraiinsOS is ported to it, who knows how much better efficiency can be squeezed from them.

PS: It uses 2 fans, not 4. The design since the S11 is the same: two pusher fans in one side. Canaan is using this design as well.
3768  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 10, 2019, 09:21:32 PM
It looks like the situation has improved a little. But constant blackouts remain a concern for the majority of the people.

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/venezuela/article229026649.html
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/04/venezuelans-struggle-find-water-aftermath-blackouts-190404065537683.html

The news indicates that the power supply has been restored, but it is being heavily rationed.

Venezuela cannot stand this situation for a long time.
It has been years that they suffer but citizens would be on the verge of collapse. And also we should not forget that other organizations can thrive under these conditions that may cause significant problems and anarchy to the country.
I can't find a way that can help Venezuela find its way to growth.

Jobs, what our economy needs is jobs, and for that the economy must be opened, so investors can come and open business. To open the economy the socialists must fall. Without opening the economy any source of income must be in a foreign currency to be able to survive hyperinflation, obviously something they can't seize like crypto works.

Since nobody wants to kick the socialists out (and the few who tried failed, were killed, etc.) people flee the country in desperation. How can you live with 5 USD a month when the price of imported food is higher than in the US, and local production disappeared?

While Caracas was supposed to be spared from the blackouts, yesterday we had another one for several hours... And each time this happens the water stops for at least 4 days or more, which is what prompted demonstrations and lootings last time.

Also the internet service is garbage, it comes and goes at random, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours or days, and many people never get it again.
3769  Economy / Exchanges / Re: CEXs & DEXs on: April 10, 2019, 06:54:08 PM
It's true that the volumes are too low to attract people and it can also be difficult for some people to use. It's already hard enough to convince them of the advantages of using a DEX and the low volumes do not make it easy for them to do so, nor does their lack of exposure. Not everyone is interested in Atomic swap, fiats still rule at the end.

So its a catch 22: Few people use them because they are low volume, and they are low volume because few people use them (reminds me of small pools).

Of course a decentralized exchange is better, you get to control your coins, not the exchange. But even centralized low volume exchanges are useless. Guess we need a ranking by volume for decentralized exchanges. I read an article a couple of days ago that lists Idex on the top, i wonder how true is that.

If actual fiat is involved, I guess there is not much hope. A decentralized localbitcoins? "Out of Band?" Bisq looks very promising, but no one is using it...
3770  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SSD or HD - what's best for running several crypto wallets? on: April 10, 2019, 05:52:57 PM
Hey folks,
Recently have installed a SSD on one of my machines and got impressed with its speed.
I run several crypto wallets of altcoins here and leave some staking.

Noticed the the computer lost a bit of performance over a couple of months.

What you think is best? installing the wallets on the SSD or the HD?

my first decision was to install it on the SSD but is there any chance that this is clogging the system and make performance slower?
would it be better to leave all wallets on the HD?

(I know the risks of cold VS hot wallet and usually don't keep substantial amounts on these hot wallets, just wondering about the performance here, not safety)

You should put the OS in the SSD, and the bulk data in the HD. In principle, you want to avoid writes to your SSD. Each write reduces its lifespan. If your wallets are light, like myetherwallet or electrum, this shouln't be a problem. But if you are downloading the blockchain because you are running full nodes, then try to use the HD.

Some people say an SSD may take years or even decades to degrade, but do you want to take chances? Also there are different technologies in use, some last longer than others. In general try to avoid writes to it, and make sure your OS isn't saving access time (atime), and that no swapfiles are stores into the SSD. The rule of thumb is: Reduce writes to the SSD.

Oh, and never defragment it. I'm not sure what did you mean by "optimization", but repeated defragmenting operations would kill its lifetime very quickly. I hope you DO pay attention to the people telling you to no use windows, that is no joke, switch to Linux for serious money handling matters.
3771  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / About stablecoin wallets needing a different coin for tx on: April 10, 2019, 02:20:40 PM
I have tried using a few stablecoins (tokens?) directly to do transactions. Unfortunately they all seem to use someone else's blockchain. This is a bit of a letdown because the tx fee needs to be paid in that coin instead. Most are erc-20 so they use "gas" (eth), and to be able to do a transaction you need to have both in your wallet...

Lets just say that is a bit user unfriendly. Sure i know how to do it, problem is others... Big problem. So what alternatives are there? Is there an actual stablecoin using its own blockchain, or some wallet that hides this from the end user and converts, say, usdc into the required gas needed to do the tx?

While we are at it i'm also confused with USDT having both bitcoin and eth variants... One type needs satoshis and the other uses "gas" like all other ERC-20s.

To make it simple: I would like to know if person A can send USDCs (or another stablecoin) to person B, each using their own wallet, not tied to coinbase or any particular exchange, and not having to use ETH as well. Impossible?
3772  Other / Off-topic / Re: What browser you are using on: April 09, 2019, 10:48:53 PM
I use Waterfox as my main browser; Chromium occasionally due to its ability to pick a different audio device; Midori to monitor my Asic miner for being small and lean; Opera rarely for its built in VPN; Tor-browser very rarely (I tend to use Tor selectively with Waterfox instead); and Brave for ad viewing earning activities which i seldom do anymore.
3773  Economy / Economics / Re: Venezuela hit by new nationwide powercut for more than three days on: April 09, 2019, 09:42:01 PM
No, Venezuela was broken by socialist policies: Pegging the USD to an arbitrary value "to stop inflation", which was in effect a subsidy favoring imported goods and hurting local production; massive intervention by the state seizing investments, property and production or fixing prices by decree made most of the private sector bankrupt, and what the State owned or seized from bankrupt companies, was left to rot as well. Expenditure... insane money waste, often lost in corruption (ie. Odebrecht), disguised as social programs when oil prices were high. Now that they are low, they kept the same or even increased the expenditure, since they were in red unable pay wages they ordered the Central bank to add zeroes to the State accounts (because printing actual banknotes is too expensive) and we were forced into a cashless nation overnight due to their own induced inflation.

By the time the US started "sanctions" in say, 2017; 95% of the harm was already done. In theory, these "sanctions" are aimed to give the final blow that would topple the de-facto gov, but the regime seems completely oblivious to them and the (bad) situation remains unchanged (its getting worse with or without sanctions).

Venezuela is perfect example of where the economy is in serve pressure and their local fiat currency has lost its value completely. Also you can find that almost everyone in Venezuela has invested in bitcoins and the rate of bitcoin in Venezuela is far more than the normal rate else where.

I don't think that is true. Venezuela still amounts to less than 1% of the exchange volumes and I really doubt whether the people there can actually afford purchasing Bitcoins. As far as I have heard, the US Dollar banknotes remains as the primary method of wealth storage (although the government is going all out to stop this practice).

The amount of USD money circulating is rather limited, and this is also making inflation in USD prices as well. Imported goods are starting to be much more expensive than abroad, which makes it tricky for most people who earn under 5 USD a month.

Bitcoin is ideal to escape inflation, but as correctly pointed few people can afford them. There is a group of wealthy people often abroad trading with them as this is one of the only ways to safely move capital from and to the country with draconian controls.
3774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs Gold vs Fiat on: April 09, 2019, 09:18:28 PM
You didn't format this correctly, here I will fix it for you:

Key Attributes

Sources: BullishCase

Censorship ResistantBitcoin
Perhaps it's most important feature. Centered around the idea that no entity should have the ability to seize your wealth or block a transaction.
Gold
While an improvement over fiat, gold's physical nature can make it difficult to shield from seizure.
Fiat
Governments and banks can intervene to seize or freeze bank accounts and block transactions.
DivisibleBitcoin
Bitcoin is divisible out to 8 decimal places, which opens up the possibility for micropayments where txs can be completed for fractions of a cent.
Gold
While gold can be divided into smaller amounts, it becomes impractical to use small specks of gold in commerce.
Fiat
Fiat currencies are easily divisible given they can go out to 2 decimal places.
DurableBitcoin
Bitcoin will remain durable as long as the network remains secure. However, it has a short history and risks associated with it.
Gold
Gold is nearly indestructible, highly resistant to corrosion, and does not rust.
Fiat
Fiat is only as durable as the institution issuing it. History is littered with situations where fiat currencies failed to maintain their value over the long term
Established HistoryBitcoin
Bitcoin has a far shorter history than both gold and fiat, dating back roughly a decade.
Gold
Gold has a track record that dates back millennia and has arguably proven to be the best store of value in human history.
Fiat
Fiat currencies in their current form are a product of the 20th century and largely the result of Nixon taking the US off the gold standard in 1971.
FungibleBitcoin
Due to the transparency of the blockchain, bitcoins used for illicit purposes could be traced and refused as payment.
Gold
An ounce of melted down gold is always equivalent to another ounce of gold.
Fiat
There have been instances where fiat denominations have been treated differently due to government policies.
PortableBitcoin
Bitcoin can transfer value around the world in minutes, and there is no limit to the amount of wealth an individual can directly carry on them.
Gold
It can be moved and transacted in small amounts but becomes impractical when dealing with larger values because of its weight.
Fiat
The digital transfer of fiat is easy, but can take a few days to settle and be subject to capital controls. Physically moving large quantities is difficult.
ScarceBitcoin
Bitcoin's maximum supply is 21 million BTC with its inflation schedule predefined and governed by a mathematical formula.
Gold
While there clearly exists the possibility for the discovery of new reserves both on and off earth, it remains highly scarce.
Fiat
Fiat lacks any true scarcity as governmentscan create more as needed and have the potential to issue an unlimited amount.
VerifiableBitcoin
The underlying blockchain ensures authenticity and cryptographic signatures prove ownership.
Gold
Can easily be identified, however, gold can be faked or secretly filled with cheaper metals.
Fiat
While fiat currencies are relatively easy to identify, fiat can be counterfeited.

Now the complexity of the number of assessments by the criterion:

From 40 (Maximum possible):
Bitcoin - 34 points
Gold - 32 points
Fiat - 24 points

Bitcoin Victory!

3775  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain introduces the Antminer S17 Pro, Antminer S17, and the Antminer T17 on: April 09, 2019, 12:17:51 PM
Well that didn't last long... Bitmain as usual.

But i don't see any "T17"s, where did you get that info from? I assume "Pro" 53 is the most efficient one?
3776  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you need cash for everyday use? on: April 08, 2019, 02:51:48 PM
My country has became cashless not by choice but by force. A failed economy, and an awful government has produced the worst hyperinflation the world has today. With under 3% of the fiat money in physical form, people just can't use it anymore. And because of the hyperinflation speed, the remaining banknotes are too small anyway. They were just introduced last September, and are already useless.

Well be have had years of this, its only becoming worse now. In the meantime, the preferred means of transaction in my country has been debit card, and some fancy wire transfer using SMS or smartphone apps. Unfortunately a new dark cloud looms in the horizon: Because of US sanctions, american companies won't be able to operate much longer, this includes Visa and Mastercard. Guess who handles most debit card transactions here?

Unless at the 11th hour the inept politicians beg the Chinese to bring UnionPay here, we are facing a new crisis (and we just had a whole month of blackouts, which are still raging in most parts of the country...

Contrary to media beliefs, use of crypto in this country is almost non-existent, except to escape hyperinflation by exchanging the useless fiat into it. The worst of altcoins, even game virtual money backed on nothing (ie WoW gold), keeps far better value than our national currency. So people exchange their savings into those, and only when they need to buy something they exchange it back into the smallest amount of fiat they would need for the purchase of that day. And yes, the shop needs to have the debit card reader, internet connection (could be dialup or mobile) AND electricity...

Should any of these fail, no transaction occurs, someone returns home empty handed. No food today, etc.

But we had no choice, we became cashless de-facto, while you people can still choose not to. If your fiat ever fails and enters a hyperinflation spiral it will be too late to react. Now that you don't have the urgent need, you can design ways to make it work effortlessly.

Think... What can be done for these few rare occasions where you need a physical exchange? Well i gave it a thought: Do the same thing done in casinos and arcades: Tokens! (the physical ones). Just like you enter a theme park and you get tickets for the ride, suppose there is a machine where you buy them, and at the exit you can return the unused ones from/to your crypto wallet.
3777  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9i one board doesnt work on: April 08, 2019, 02:00:44 PM
Based on what you have already tried out, the only thing you have left is to try to replace the 18-pin data cable that connects the controller board to the affected hashboard.

https://imgur.com/a/97bD1Gs

If you don't have a spare one (I recommend always having, just in case) you can turn off the miner, disconnect the PSU and swap one of the working ones from the other two boards into the affected one to check if it's alive. If after doing so the board still doesn't work that probably means it's dead and you will have to replace the whole hashboard for a new one  Sad

Before assuming this, test. Simple: disconnect all the other boards and swap cables.

Test each board one by one, and swap data cables one by one, and power cables one by one on all three boards while single connected. Then you will know for sure if the data cable is the culprit. Takes time, but gives you the right answer instead of wild guessing.

Hi @Hhampuz,

I am already in your Bitvest campaign and keep looking for a campaign with better payout but still managed by you and that is why I am here.

I see that there are open positions for senior member and want to ask how much will I get in this campaign, which tier I will be signed too?

Seems to you now advanced to the TIER C  which has, as @Johnzky  wrote, better reward than TIER C  highest available now TIER here in 777 campaign.  And here is only 3rd position free so it would be hard to rankup higher for you - you better stay in your bitvest campaign.  Cool

This appears to be by design to discourage people from switching campaigns, and Hhampuz dislikes it when people wants to switch while still in another campaign; especially from his own managed campaigns. So its big no-no. You are better off staying where you are until the campaign ends.
3779  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain introduces the Antminer S17 Pro, Antminer S17, and the Antminer T17 on: April 08, 2019, 01:38:33 PM
1650/45000 = good.   Grin. 37 watts a th. Vs 60 watts a th at high speed is better then 28 or 29 % improvement.

I wonder if that demo is a cherrypicked unit.

I have carefully checked my 8 m10s and if I cherry picked all 24 boards I can get a really nice set of numbers much better the specs suggest is possible.

If the majority of s17s do 37 watts a th  at high speed people will buy them.

Yes there is a chance they may cherrypick those units (and your pending M20 as well), so there is no choice but to accept an early review, and then later a second review when "production" units are available. So, an early review, and then again another from a following batch etc. Can be from different reviewers, don't take all the burden yourself Smiley

I'm guessing the S17 will be 40~45 watt a th. Since you have a voltage regulator you can measure them 240v, 220v and 208v for science.
If i were to guess, Bitmain may be publishing stats based on the chips themselves (20v DC), or the whole unit plugged to Chinese mains, which is 230v@50hz.

All that current transforming causes some loses. One thing to always keep in mind for you people using renewable, is figure a way to avoid inverting in the first place. I mean, if your panels make 24v and the Asic boards take 20v, shouldn't the whole dc-ac, ac-dc be skipped altogether? If you can ever pull that (skip the PSUs, direct feed the units) you are going to be more efficient than everybody else.

To begin with DC tends to lower its voltage on its own, use a long enough wire and it might already be down to 20v by the time it reaches the unit... Else you could figure out DC to DC psus, they exist for regular PCs and servers (especially useful if your input DC is too different, ie. 48v or 12v, or mostly to buffer voltage variations from the input (such as when you turn on/off another unit) and ensure steady 20v to the output.

Read this article, its very informative:

Also scroll down at the comments section.

It seems the established emergency procedure for this situation wasn't effective and could not prevent the crashes.
