383  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: If you're thinking buying mining hardware, read this first on: September 23, 2013, 06:21:26 PM
Everyone should go back and re-read the OP.  Mentally replace GPU with ASIC in that post... that's the same kind of "the sky is falling" stuff we are seeing now with ASICs.  How'd that GPU mining turn out for those that invested in it back in 2011?

The equation is simple.

If you have fiat capital that you wish to exchange for Bitcoin, then history has shown that you get more Bitcoin buying it at market rate, rather then expected Bitcoin return from mining.

Remember that unlike GPU's the ASIC hardware being sold at premium rates have no other use.

Over what time frame are you referring to, though?  Depending on the time frame, mining can return more than buying... I agree that if you take the entirety of Bitcoin history as a whole, you are correct.  Will that statement hold true in the future?  Who knows...

Where are you seeing this rate that you say it stabilizes?  If it's at the pool, you just need to adjust your window.  No pool knows your hashrate.  If you think BTC guild is "better" in that regard, it's just because they use a larger window and I don't think it's configurable.  On EMC it's configurable, so you can make it as large or as small as you want, depending on how accurate you want your readings.  45 - 55 minutes is best for accuracy.

Haha look at the little minions scramble every time I post.  A single post from me brings out the entire Anti-BFL crew to hang on my every word, it's freaking awesome.  You crazies spend more time paying attention to me than you do your own lives... I'm not quite sure what to make of that, but I'm sure glad I'm not you!

I bounced US1 last night to make a quick change to some config stuff, but a properly functioning BFG or CG miner should not have a problem with that (it was only down for a couple seconds).  That's about the only change I've done in the past week or so, besides updating the backend bitcoind's, but that wouldn't affect mining at all.

There's not currently any way to hard code the difficulty - is there a particular reason you want to set a specific difficulty as opposed to letting the pool decide what's best?

Nemesis:

If you are getting wildly fluctuating hashrates, you need to increase your "Minutes to estimate miner Hashrate" under the settings tab... I suggest around 45 minutes or so.  If it's set at 5 minutes, you'll get huge swings due to variance.

They're complaining because you're late and others are early (relative to you).  There's nothing more or less to it than that.

Someone hasn't been reading the forums!

without to get too personal I suggest go back to work and do your job. I have a order in your system which I can charge off. this is the situation we have right now. I will never ever do any business with you again, for shure.

Believe me, it will be more of a relief to me than it will be to you!

PS - there's no "H' in "sure".

Please, and I'm dead serious about this, tell me what you thought was going to happen after we shipped all of our products? Did you think difficulty would remain the same or go down?

Josh forgot to add a third choice: Would the difficulty go up? BTW, this is the correct answer, but then it wouldn't have been a rhetorical question, along with giving the previous "dead serious" question cred.

Taking the two sentences combined, it's difficult to ascertain if Josh truly is dead serious or simply offering up a rhetorical choice.

I'm serious.  The cognitive disconnect that some people hold is amazing to me.  The people complaining about BFL not shipping then complaining that the difficulty is going up because BFL is shipping is mind boggling.  Do they just not understand how difficulty works?  Did they think they'd be the only people receiving a device and no one else would? What's the logic behind their posts?  That's what I want to know.

Tried again.  Notify minutes is set to 5 and I've just topped up SMS credits.

Stopped cgminer 15 minutes ago (EMC shows last share 15m ago and hash rate of zero).  But no email and no SMS received yet.  (It used to work.)

Username is roybadami and worker is roybadami_worker if you want to take a look.

roy

[EDIT: Am mining again now, though]

It looks like your alerts are working fine.  I reactivated your test worker and forced it into thinking it was failed and it sent out an alert.

Make sure all the settings for your worker are correct; I'm not sure why it would not be alerting you but I do not see any emails in the logs going out, so it's not actually sending any alerts which seems to indicate that it does not think it's eligible for an alert.  Your last alert on that worker was on the 17th of August.

Email and SMS are all coming through.  You may want to check/contact your ISP and ask them why they are blocking your emails.

Still working on the SMS credits issue though.

SMS notifications are still working. I'm not sure why those are showing up ... I will see about getting it fixed here shortly.

You can get more SMS credits with this URL: https://eclipsemc.com/sms_credit.php until I figure out why the link isn't showing up properly.

Yes, please don't let this thread die... maybe we need an Autotrader type site listed in BTC?  That would be pretty cool.

Better to just click on worker name...

Code:
That worker does not exist or does not belong to you!

but worker is online/

This means you've never submitted any DGM shares, ever (with that worker).  It's a small bug I've been meaning to fix, but still haven't gotten around to it.

I am not looking forward to a 1 billion share block any time soon.  I think our worst has maybe been a 4x - 5x difficulty block, but I can't recall off the top of my head.
