3801  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Coinbase - Datos interesantes del cierre Q1 2021 on: April 07, 2021, 11:16:24 PM
...

3802  Economy / Economics / Re: Differences between an investor and common man! on: April 07, 2021, 11:59:30 AM
What are the things differ from mindset of common man with investor, please share your thoughts.

...

None. A common man should be an investor and in fact many common man in the US have 401K (pension plans) which makes them investors, many people (like myself, a classic example of a very common dude) have some stocks or funds. The message here should be that the common guy should get at least a minimum of financial education. There is not "an investor type" and a "common guy", there are simply different degrees of knowledge and investing ability.

One of the main problems I have seem is that many common people have associated the idea of investing with gambling, even they use these as synonyms. This is the confusion we should address.
3803  Economy / Economics / Re: Are "Work Ethics" & "American Dream" a way to keep people working hard? on: April 07, 2021, 11:50:53 AM
- If you do not work you are not a good person.
- Since work is good, the more you do the better.
- Working is the natural order of life and what "God wants". If you do not work you are "a sinner". (see here "protestant work ethic").

These things aren't very relevant today and haven't been relevant for quite some time already, as the influence of religion is waning, especially in the Western world.
...

While the religious aspect of this line of thinking has faded, although you may want to take a look at how live these are in some regions such as the Bible Belt, the cultural aspect remains. In a way, it is similar to some Muslim countries and particularly some cities in which people are just moderately religious or none at all but women will still wear a hijab.

The origin was religious, the support came from those who would benefit from social order, social immobility and having others "work hard". The thinking is culturally still there and the support is still coming from the same groups.

...

My teams never come back, just let me think there is hope and then fxxk me. Basically in this game they fxxked me 3 times. First playing shit and go down by 19, then teasing the first comeback and then the 2. one.

...

Some teams just ain got it in them. If you watch basketball frequently you will see that there are two types of teams that have a chance to come back: the really great teams that have some much quality that they can turn a game at any time, and those that are very strong psychologically and never give up and have some special players that can take the reins and the responsibility when things are going south. Are your teams of this types?
3805  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2020/21 on: April 07, 2021, 11:38:37 AM
Sevilla become most super hero for Barcelona and Real Madrid because Sevilla make Atletico Madrid more close position with Barcelona and Real Madrid, just left 2 points from Barcelona and only left three points from Real Madrid, next match most excited when el clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid to make dominance who can standing on the first position.
Even if seen from the current odds Barcelona is predicted to win and I think it might happen later, Madrid will play at UCL today and that makes the main players maybe not in 100% condition when playing in El Clasico later. With the main players injured and some of the players probably exhausted, I'm sure Barcelona will take advantage of this situation to win in El Clasico.

Who says Barca is predicted to win? If there are really different odds on that game I am willing to put my money on Madrid. The Clasico is always a big unknown, there are a million things that could happen given the quality of the players, the epic, the motivation... I would not give other than 50/50 to any game between Madrid an Barca even in the worst moment of any of the two teams.
3806  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: XRP is Back on: April 07, 2021, 11:29:27 AM
XRP has lost all the reputation and good will - not that it had much anyway ever. People tended to confuse XRP, which never had any realistic use or at least was not different from a privately issued currency with XRP Enterprises which had a bit of work -  again, not that it was  much - with some institutions. A currency living on "maybe" news cannot keep up the pace with true crypto.
3807  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The self exclusion scheme, anyone have any experience regarding that ? on: April 07, 2021, 01:02:05 AM
A friend tried to self-exclude. It is just not possible, there are too many on-line opportunities. It is a much better option to join a group or get some therapy. An old friend of mine developed a big problem with slot machines and was able to recover successfully by asking others to help him out. As they say, when the fun stops, it is time to stop.

In the most simple terms, absolute freedom means you can do anything you want, without limit, and without any constraint. That sounds sweet but dreadful.

Forget about beneficial; that's subjective. Forget about right attitude and conscience. Forget about good and evil. Those are meaningless concepts in a place where every single person is absolutely free.

I'm not so sure about you being born knowing what is good and what is not. What I'm sure of is that the rest of the human beings were born tabula rasa.

My friend, in a human society, regulations are not exclusive for evil things. Everything is regulated.

Absolute freedom is just impossible, our own nature as humans (well, I am partly and AI living on a cloud service, but that would take too long to explain Smiley) and even our own nature as physical beings limited in space, time and sensory abilities set up a boundary to what we can do.

Many times people refer to "financial freedom" which is to, at least, be able to have a wide choice on what to invest your time. It is not much about earning and multiplying, but also about deciding to live with with what is really worth.
3809  Economy / Economics / Re: Why you can't be rich by owning crypto on: April 06, 2021, 09:43:19 AM
That is a very interesting argument, the only problem is that it has been the same argument used when bitcoin was at 1$, 10$, 100$, 1000$, 10000$.... do you follow me?

I admit that the growth is likely to be less in the future years as bitcoin is more mature and is gaining traction among institutions, however there are still many companies, countries and investors that do not have a piece of the pie and may be interested in having it. Even if they do not hodl, it contributes to the network effect that is one of the key drivers of bitcoin value. Price will follow value.

Regarding your arguments of people getting rich too soon, you should make the title "why not everyone can get rich with crypto". Not everyone will hold enough to be rich just like not all basketball players can be rich. Global productivity is a million years from being affected by "bitcoin rich" effect.

The value of Bitcoin would only increase as long as the our society is inflationary.

Kind of yes, the price of bitcoin in USD will grow as long as the politicians decide to print money. Do you see that not being the case? Wink
3810  Economy / Economics / What the Archegos case may imply for Bitcoin future volatility on: April 06, 2021, 09:38:59 AM
How did the Archegos case happened? For those who do not know about it, you have a thread here. In essence, a Hedge fund manager(Bill Hwang) with a not very clean past was able to get x10 leverage on back-bench tech investments such as Baidu. The result is a loss across the banking system of $6 billion.

This would not be a complete surprise if it weren´t for the list of lenders: Nomura, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley,...

Why did this happen and why bitcoin price may be affected in the future? Summarising what several outlets say, investment banks are not what they used to be. IPOs are no longer in trend and they have been replaced by direct float due to the hefty costs of placements (these sometimes fail, just like IPOs). SPACs also offer a quick way to reach listed status in significant markets.

On top of that, the banks, due to the 2008 crisis, are limited in what amount of their own capital can they invest. The trading has also become electronic at large so their ability to profit from that is also hindered. There are not that many ways to gain the bucks they used to.

To sum up, now they are forced to deal with hedge funds and highly leveraged instruments. This was what happened with Archegos.

And why may this be a concern for bitcoint hodlers?

- There is an increased interest from institutional investors and companies to take positions in bitcoin.
- There is and increased interest by exchanges to have these type of clients, that are more profitable than retail.
- There is a need by investment banks to play derivatives.

So, if Archegos could get leveraged enough to move the NASDAQwhen trying to undo its position, just imagine what could happen with a much narrower market (crypto).
3811  Economy / Economics / Are "Work Ethics" & "American Dream" a way to keep people working hard? on: April 06, 2021, 09:17:56 AM
Some people say that working is good and that it makes people better themselves, not just by giving means of living, but because it prevents them from doing other things, becoming lazy and living of others. This entails a number of second corollaries such as:

- If you do not work you are not a good person.
- Since work is good, the more you do the better.
- Working is the natural order of life and what "God wants". If you do not work you are "a sinner". (see here "protestant work ethic").

Quote
in his book The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.[4] Weber asserted that Protestant ethics and values along with the Calvinist doctrine of asceticism and predestination gave birth to capitalism.

For those that may remain unconvinced by the shame, there is another positive construct based on ambition (I won´t call it greed): "The American Dream" - not exclusive from the US at all, it is just that it is better know by that name. The basis is "If you are talented and work hard, you can do whatever you dream of", and by the way you have to dream of a family and a big house in case you had any doubts.

This are quite simple concepts, appeal to the masses and are the type of simple answers to complex questions that seem to get grip in certain social groups.

Are any of these dogmas valid in developed countries nowadays? Is it better to interpret it as working for yourself rather than making effort to advance other people´s agenda?

3813  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: La Liga (Spanish League) Prediction Thread 2020/21 on: April 04, 2021, 12:46:56 AM
Real Madrid beat Eibar 2-0 and they are now second in the points table. Although it is expected that Real Madrid can easily beat the Eibar team. Because this time a very easy opponent. Real Madrid's next match is against Liverpool. Looking forward to seeing Benjama's new strategy.

I watched the game and it wasn't an easy game for Madrid just because the heavy rain came in 2nd half who could've disrupt the game but with some luck Madrid managed to score again and make 2-0 even if Eibar had some mini chances to score. In my opinion, Real Madrid will have a tough game with Liverpool just because that style of them are tricky for Real Madrid ...it always was.

Liverpool has been doing quite well and Real Madrid does not seem to be at its best. However they tend to surprise on international matches and a quarter final match is possibly what they need to boost their competitiveness. Eibar might have been a test for the 3-4-2-1 system and it seems to be making the most of Benzema.
3814  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Are there sportsbooks that offer flipped odds? on: April 04, 2021, 12:43:07 AM
It is not impossible to find such opportunities, but in practice it would require keeping a good number of accounts open and these would not be on the main services that anyway do check each other frequently. Thus, you would need to have parked money spreaded across minority platforms and then keep a constant eye on these short of "arbitrage" situations which most likely will only last a glimpse. It does not look like an useful strategy and that is not even counting on the house figuring out and banning your.
3815  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling firms helping Government and people during quarantine, literally. on: April 04, 2021, 12:35:00 AM
There is a very clear case on how some gambling or lotteries help with social causes. The "ONCE" is the "National Blind People Association" in Spain. They organise an state authorised lottery every week and put profits into helping disabled people. One good employment that you can get being blind or having severe sight issues is selling this lottery tickets, but also the profits are reinvested in people with disabilities of different types.
3816  Economy / Economics / Re: More bullish news: Paypal will alllow crypto checkout on: April 02, 2021, 05:31:10 PM
I bet no one is going to be considering that PayPal has just used a dominant position in the payment space to jump into crypto trading? I guess that it will only be when 90% of crypto payments are done through PayPal and then it will be too late to stop it.
3817  Economy / Economics / Re: A Decentralized Roadmap To Compete With Elon Musk/Tesla: The Open Source Car on: April 01, 2021, 11:54:33 PM
While I do not see this happening, the idea itself is quite inspiring. If we take example from Linus, you could potentially use an existing car and start tweaking around with it. The major difference here is that software is not in itself subject to patents (there are some cases in which patents have been granted in some countries), just to intellectual property. An electric car, particularly the batteries and control systems do contain plenty of proprietary stuff.

Another major moat that defends the carmakers are the factories that require immense investments. I can picture a 3D printed car assembled in your local workshop, but I cannot imagine it being competitive or having realistic mass adoption.

Lastly, safety and approvals would be a major hurdle. If it ever has any success, be sure the carmakers will bring the legal artillery on it.

3819  Economy / Economics / Coinbase will do direct flotation not IPO - SEC Accepted officially on: April 01, 2021, 11:29:58 PM
As many companies that want to skip the middle man, Coinbase is aiming to directly flotate its stock on NASDAQ. This avoids the heavy costs associated to conducting an IPO through investment banking, and since the shares are anyway being dealt OTC it makes sense and it is not as risky as otherwise might be for smaller companies.

Approval news and financial statements of coinbase.

Quote
Coinbase’s listed stock on Nasdaq will be recognized with the name “COIN’, according to the listing.

Quote
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is about going public after filing for an IPO with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). However, the company stated that it’s going for a direct listing instead of the usual ICO that’s predominant in the industry. It has also applied for its shares to be listed on Nasdaq Stock Exchange

Listing docs here.

Regarding the 100B valuation, it is doubtful at best and IMO speculative as perhaps all the cryptomarket I guess.

Quote
Last time we talked about Coinbase, we gave it a $15 billion valuation. Maybe it was right at the time, but it was fairly wrong given where things are going now. Today’s Coinbase private valuation is floating between $50 billion and $100 billion in the private secondary markets on Nasdaq. That distance made us revisit the financial model for the company with a February update.
