So the Linux box version is working fine? Have you got the full blockchain there? If so, you c I uld try backing up your current data folder, replace it with the Linux box version and try again (with your same wallet dat) and try rescanning it to see if that'll work.
3862  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Can you Help identify this man? on: July 18, 2020, 04:16:47 PM
The "stranger" phrases look like something related to a game - especially the stock market idea and the guild.

Although nantes look to be things small - typically things similar to the description of nanobots but I don't think that's helpful.

Has he not got any information on his machine about his name or address? If you're trying to find his identity you could try to scrape his saved WiFi logins and see if he had a personal WiFi hub with its original name that the company could help trace down...

A lot of people come through here and stay for varying amounts of time so I don't know if anyone would remember him well, if you search his machine for "wallet.dat" or "electrum" you might be able to see if he's got a btc address people might recognise (but i wouldn't share this with anyone).
3863  Other / Beginners & Help / [why is this scam working] new bitcoin investment system making millions. on: July 18, 2020, 04:58:00 AM
What started last year as a trend with "dragons" from dragons den proported to invest in a scam bot that's just going to steal your money still seems to be going on.

I'm guessing this means the scammers are profiting quite well from it but I still don't understand why people would fall for this sort of stuff without doing research - I guess the false promises are too alluring...

Also, is there a reason sites like Google, quora and others won't stop allowing obvious scams to be advertised on their site. Especially since the whole "we don't want to advertise on contraversial videos" on YouTube stuff why hasn't that moved across into not wanting controversial or potentially scammy ads in the pool?
3864  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: {Warning}: Fake Blockchain.com Phishing site on: July 17, 2020, 09:04:25 PM
How did you come across that site? The L looks really ugly like that too 😅.
3865  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin core wallet loading failed on: July 17, 2020, 08:47:56 PM
You need to reindex, Where's the icon for core or do you run it from the command line?

If run from the command line just use "bitcoin-qt - reindex" if you're launching it from a shortcut then the best thing to do would be to copy and paste the shortcut in the same area and rename it to "reindex bitcoin core" then edit the new shortcut by clicking properties and editing the location/target or command box and add a space and -reindex then click apply or OK and run the shortcut. Don't run the shortcut normally just when you get the error.
3866  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Don't buy facemasks for the coronavirus! on: July 17, 2020, 07:08:55 PM
Face masks are good for something, I'm sure.

Most masks can provide 150L/minute of air afaik with the average person needing about 7 or 8.
Rather than linking to youtube, I'd prefer this:

https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/using-face-masks-community-reducing-covid-19-transmission

Quote
Using face masks in the communityECDC TECHNICALREPORT2In theEU/EEA and the UK... There is no evidence that non-medical facemasks or other face coversare an effective means of respiratory protection for the wearer of the mask. Overall, various non-medical face maskswere shown to have very low filter efficiency(2–38%) [21]. In one study, cotton surgical masks were associated with a higher risk of penetration of microorganisms andILI compared to no masks[5].

I'm assuming this is just a way to boost people's confidence in crowded public spaces and then blame the ones who don't comply for the prblems that arise from the use of it...
3867  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Determine which coin to invest in? on: July 17, 2020, 06:43:24 PM
don't, unless you want to lose money.

Essentially...

You wouldn't go for 10 or 20 if you did want to find a good coin at the bottom of the pile and you'd probably have to do a lot of searching to get anywhere near that.

You're going to want to:
Inspect the dev team and check their credentials and experience
Look at what the coin tries to innovate
look at how far the team are from approaching that innovation.

Although if someone needs a private ico or crowd funding I think that says a lot about the team beind it. Not to mention a lot of icos scam or the coins do something eth or btc or a few other coins could do...

You're probably looking at the top 20 with good fundamentals and investing in those or just holding btc...
3868  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 17, 2020, 06:05:52 PM
Here's a development that actually might impact the space. Twitter are removing the ability to post crypto addresses - https://www.theblockcrypto.com/post/71876/twitter-crypto-address-posts

No idea how much legit business takes place through there on that basis but there must be a bit, and considerably more than what these moronic scammers net. Maybe you can still DM them.

This is completely useless. One can just make a website with the address and post the URL on twitter (or one can even make a service for that job).
So all they'll stop is the small giveaways. For now.

I wish they would think a bit before jumping into such "fixes".

Yeah it does look like a really stupid idea. A domain itself is free and you can get free hosting for a few hours to scam... (I think UK.net is a free one a lot of people already use).

I guess it's more a form of censorship any anything else since you now have to use external links (or maybe it's possible to still post eth addresses as they'd be hard to stop).
3869  Economy / Speculation / Re: USDT/BTC pairs total volume is only about 7% of total Bitcoin volume...... on: July 17, 2020, 05:16:03 PM
Did anyone ever trust bitfinex?
I don't think an exchange collapsing would cause much damage now unless it was two at once (like binance and coinbase at once) otherwise people are probably prepared for it...

I personally prefer dai and usdc because they both have certain advantages, I don't see a point in tether...
3870  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Transaction unconfirmed on: July 17, 2020, 03:40:24 PM
Fees are REALLY high at the moment. If you're not in a rush just wait for it to confirm. It'll probably confirm over the weekend if transactions go down again...

I think most nodes make stuff respendable after 14 days, electrum makes stuff respendable the day after so it's probably somewhere between them. If you have rbf enabled you can change thew transaction to whatever you want now but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to.
3871  Economy / Services / Re: #1 Trading Expert VIP Signals + Best Trading Indicator on: July 17, 2020, 04:41:10 AM
Is this a new site or has it been running a while. Also have you fully integrated cornix into the site - so you'd be giving someone just your jsername to trade with?

Anyway the $1000-5000 initial deposit seems very high to test the waters especially if you're not fully in control of your funds (ie they're deposited on your site).
3872  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help please on: July 17, 2020, 02:14:46 AM
What have you got to invest? Most legitimate places will give 1-2% per annum in btc here so it might not be great for you...

I'd probably suggest, if you want somewhere safe to try binance who offer 0.73% a year with btc but higher rates on eth and tokens that CLAIM to follow the dollar. Link: https://www.binance.com/en/lending#lending-demandDeposits

You could also try cloud mining but tbh a lot of them are scams or don't have immediate liquidity now if that's something you'd require - I'd only really trust hashnest, bitdeer and viabtc though atm. (if they post daily rewards then remember they'll go down and miners become unprofitible in around a year but you could experiment with it).

There's also defi which you could look up but it's very fresh and may not be safe (although I do have funds in there) you won't be able to hold btc in those contracts though and will have to convert it to eth, dai or many other coins.

You could invest time, either look at marketplaces to gather funds or look at creating something others would want or would want to advertise on. The age of freelancing has sort of made it so you don't have to conform to a tight schedule so if you had to take your mom to the hospital or something - you wouldn't be expected to work unless you'd given yourself that as a deadline although it's normally better to overestimate (1.5x your optimistic target).

Disclaimer: I have no link to the companies I mention and these are generally companies I'd trust with some funds, do your own research from here if you can as I don't want to decide who you trust.
3873  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 16, 2020, 10:48:59 PM
Yeah I started this thread as I thought the amount of funds going into the address would keep rising as it doubled in about an hour but I think that was just the people testing with it. They also gave a limit of 30 minutes on a few of the tweets and there mightve been a learning curve or other reasons people wouldn't make it in 30 minutes (excluding knowing it was already a scam)..
3874  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: July 16, 2020, 03:42:14 PM
Will ChipMixer.com ban or help in tracking bitcoin obtained due to #twitter_hack?
Will they help them if know they are the hackers and what will happen if a judicial or political ruling is issued in that regard?
All analysis firms will track that address and may end up sending coins to ChipMixer

They probably shouldn't... I originally thought at first it'd make sense for them to try to freeze the funds or something but now I don't.

What sort of a sign would this send out to people in the crypto space and beyond if a company aren't delivering on their promises... Also how do you know some of the funds didn't belong to the scammer before they were put through the mixer - contrary to what governments would want you to believe it's not exactly reasonable to take the whole of someone's money just because 10% was involved in illegality).

Most people sent small amounts too to test the waters...
3875  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 16, 2020, 01:16:43 AM
Also was it hacks that killed of MySpace when that was a thing? I think that destroyed its reputation as well as the rise of Facebook which people seemed to just prefer.
3876  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 16, 2020, 12:58:30 AM
Of course not. The price hasn't budged throughout either.

I can't believe whoever did this added the same pathetic scam that's been going since 2017 or whatever.

They should've had a fucking massive short on Bitmex and coordinated tweets from all the exchanges about the Secret Service bursting into their offices and drilling their staff with machine gun fire.

The panic wouldn't have lasted long, but it would've been long enough to make millions. Instead they've 100 grand or so, and most of it was probably theirs anyway to look cool.

Yeah I guess it was 330 ny time and 8pm uk time, however a lot of media companies don't seem to have put it out as a headline until recently. The BBC shunted it to the top of their list about 40 minutes ago...

But yeah it was a pretty stupid tactic.

invest in cybersecurity stocks. stock ticker: SFET

I question this. A lot of cybersecurity firms offer compensation for breeches and aren't insured to a great extent themselves afaik...

We might see quite a few technology stocks fall from this too.
3877  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie here on: July 15, 2020, 10:28:09 PM
What do you mean you can't reply? There's a button at the top of each thread and at the bottom that says reply?

You can also click the quote button if you want to respond to a specific post and have it quoted in your reply.
3878  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 15, 2020, 10:11:58 PM
Yeah I forgot to say this is a massive flaw with twitter instead of bitcoin itself...

I've not seen if they've said anything yet but I'm really surprised by something like this to actually take place. As I said above there were reports coinbase had managed to reclaim their account (but this may be something other than the credentials).

At the bare minimum, hackers got access to some sort of database editing external to twitter (probably due to some staff working from home)? and then registered a site as the site has been registered very recently.
3879  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: July 15, 2020, 10:03:31 PM
Did anyone had any issues with Bitcoins that you sent to exchanges after mixing coins with ChipMixer,
and do you have any suggestions about this and advice for reducing this (excluding not using centralized exchanges Wink)?

I occasionally send my earnings from the Chipmixer campaign direct to Kraken and that has an address with Chip in the name. They've never said a word to me about it yet. I'm not sure others will be as relaxed.

I've probably gone straight to an exchanfe in the past. I normally use other places though - like adding a few extra hops or use gambling sites/offshore exchanges that hide the trace a bit. 777coin and yolodice could work for making an anonymous account to break the chain (if you try to withdraw a different amount too from them then it might make you even less noticeable).
3880  Economy / Speculation / Will the twitter scam crash the price on: July 15, 2020, 09:26:34 PM
Supposedly bill Gates and Elon musks account has been hacked. Along with many other people's accounts (such as binance and coinbase but coinbase may have regained control).

Hopefully the amounts sent remain low and this is just like a normal thing (like the twitter lives) but if a lot of people have sent all they have or this ends up in mainstream media (everywhere) then we could be in for a big crash...

I'm hodling still though. I wouldn't suggest selling but I'm just curious on people's opinions to this.
