I thought the Cairnsmore1 used 4 heatsinks, 1 fan?
It does - one heatsink per chip, all cooled by a single fan blowing air downwards onto them.

What a great idea! I guess that's what happens when you actually have experience in the field.
3902  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Bitcoin Wallet for Android on: October 31, 2012, 10:27:53 PM
I just released 2.31 final to market. So key import/export is now available to everyone.

Loving the key import feature. Now I have my mobile privkey backed up, and I don't have to worry about losing it.

Is the answer 42?
3904  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Difficulty drop on: October 30, 2012, 10:25:17 PM
What do you guys think is up with the Bitcoin rise? We just hit 25,000 Ghash, up from 20,000 Ghash just 2 months ago. I'm not making as much coins now Sad

Looks like nice steady growth. Mining is profitable, so miners are increasing capacity and new miners are coming on board.

MondoHub looks perfect.

http://www.manhattan-products.com/en-US/products/9583-mondohub

Fill that puppy up with ASICs.

guys, it's only 4 amps = 8 ports at full 500mA USB2 specs.

The details show:

  • Up to 500 mA power, all ports
  • Input: 100 - 240 V, 50/60 Hz; 1.6A, maximum

So I think it will be fine.
3906  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL refunds works flawlessly and fast on: October 30, 2012, 07:12:33 PM
If panic, panic first.

What if shipment is delayed to Jan 1013? Feb? March? And many, many people want refunds. Will BFL be able do this? My bet is: No. They don't have that amount of money left ...

Their official policy is pretty clear:

Quote
Payments made for pre-orders of ASIC based products now under development should be considered non-refundable.

So far, few people have been requesting refunds. That's going to change as more and more delays happen.
3907  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Pool OPs and share difficulty on: October 30, 2012, 05:09:29 AM
Not a big deal ... except ... the result of this is that all displayed calculations are technically incorrect after about 4.5 decimal places.

Like you said, not a big deal if the estimated hashrate is off by .045%, since with variance the estimate is going to be all over the place anyhow.

Of course you won't lose any shares/blocks - it's just displayed/reported difficulty information that is wrong.

That's the key. As long as work isn't lost, it's a non-issue.

3909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hurricane on East Coast - possible Bitcoin service disruptions on: October 30, 2012, 12:33:51 AM
I'd just like to be clear, Bitcoin will not be affected by any storm. Maybe some other related services, but Bitcoin itself is too distributed to be affected by something so small as a hurricane.

If any of the whiny allegations are unfounded, you are hereby cordially encouraged to demonstrate it by directly confronting them.
Again, I will in ~6 weeks.  When we ship the ASICs can I expect a public apology from you as well in these forums or are you going to slink off with the rest of the people and try to forget what complete asses you've been?

6 weeks you say? I expect a public apology from BFL for not shipping when they said they would. More likely though Inaba will slink off and hope people forget what a complete ass he's been.

For clarity, the question is: Are the chips pictured in the article actual functioning BFL ASICs, or are they something else?
They look like prototypes of the design image BFL showed earlier in the year, which to my mind shows it's real, does it work, only they know.

Here's your answer:

Inaba, I guess you didn't see my question yesterday. Does BFL have a working (hashing) prototype ASIC miner?
No, we are waiting on our ASIC chips right now, as I've stated in a number of other places, though it's understandable if you have missed the posts, since they are spread out everywhere.

3912  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is ASIC's a SCAM? on: October 29, 2012, 07:46:38 PM
So is this BFL ?

Yes. That is the address they have been using, and it has the owner's name on the building.
3913  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Which is the best pool to join with your ASIC? on: October 29, 2012, 10:50:27 AM
P2pool. Which has always been based on variable difficulty and fast local work generation.
Not quite... it actually accepts diff 1 shares and tests them all against its internal variable difficulty, and still operates off the getwork protocol. In its current form I'm pretty sure it would consume a lot of CPU trying to keep ASICs busy since it already consumes quite a lot of CPU without this added load.

A 60 GH/s rig would find a share in just under 1 minute. I find it hard to believe that it will cause anyone any problems.
3914  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [BETA] Bitcoin blockchain torrent on: October 29, 2012, 05:21:58 AM
Blocks are oddly sized

Makes sense.

and their locations within the block files are pretty much arbitrary.

Even for someone starting from block 0?

Yup, it is a consequence of the odd block sizes.  Reading a single block may involve several disk reads.  And getting the file offset to read will also take several reads in the index file.

Oh, they're getting stored in a simple flat file. Well that's easy, download blocks from random peers and store them in temporary files. Then when the next block needed has been downloaded, copy it to the final block file.
3915  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: So I got an interview with Sonny Vleisides from BFL... on: October 29, 2012, 03:18:57 AM
Thank CJ, I will expect your public apology when the ASICs ship.  Or are we going to hear crickets from you, too, when the time comes and you slink back to your hole and hide?

Now that October is almost over, are you polishing an apology of your own for promising October shipments and failing to meet it?
3916  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Whats in it for ASIC guys to sell? on: October 29, 2012, 01:43:06 AM
if I have access to ASIC, why wouldn't I just mine all the bitcoins myself than sell the hardware?
Risk. Mining may or may not turn out to be profitable. Selling the hardware the risk is minimal, especially when you can get customers to pre-order for months in advance while you sit on the money and have nothing to ship them.

Graph goes up. Graph goes down. It's called "variance".

Nothing unusual. Yet.
3918  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Make BFL show a prototype on: October 28, 2012, 02:18:49 AM
Anyone else waiting for BFL to show they actually have someone next generation working before they throw in money for a product they won't get for months?

And even if you did wait for a prototype, you still have a big wait if you order now:

Orders placed now are slated for January delivery.
3919  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Requests Input on: October 28, 2012, 02:02:32 AM
Just like the documented complaint you sent that you never were able to respond to, since your complaint was false?  By all means, send another!  We're still waiting for a response from you for the first one...

Who's this "we"? Are you speaking for BFL? If so, why are you posting under a personal account?
3920  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: LargeCoin is scared of BFL on: October 27, 2012, 02:39:29 AM
i hope BFL will continue to invest in these technologies, i love hardware hackers and maybe one day there will be BFL CPUs Smiley
BFL CPUs? Yep, they're only 4-6 weeks away.

"Butterfly Labs (BF Labs Inc.), a market leader in microprocessor design". LOL.
