3921  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Placing machines outside on cold winter? -20 on: December 02, 2015, 06:20:48 PM
professional expensive electronics is covered in lacque that prevent corrosion and some resistance against moisture.

however these cheap  things don't have that and they are designed for indoor operation
read the manual

Look into bitcoin miners they were meant to be ran indoors.  And for almost everyone that works good.  It would rise costs of all miners who knows how much if they made them moisture proof... and most put it inside.

So putting outside is just a bad idea.  I know someone will say but I made a box!  I just think moisture is hard to keep out, and it kills macines.  So leave machines indoors where they belong.
3922  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 02, 2015, 06:15:08 PM
Hello,

Could I get the information about space between the heatsink monting holes and Ø ?

I'm working on an improved cooling system and that information would be helpful.

I recovered this heatsink from a power supply along with a fan controller including a temperature sensor.

I'm thinking of mounting 3 sticks on each side (where my fingers hold the heatsink in the picture) and 1 fan at each extremity to get airflow through the length of the heatsink

Interesting I love to see mods.  That would be a interesting one indeed with 3 on one heatsink.  Don't think I've seen anyone do it.

Are you going to use Y adapters or what is plan to get power/data over to the compacs?
3923  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Nov 23 to Dec 7 Set up stage- Picks CLOSED! on: December 02, 2015, 06:12:48 PM
What's the prize ? Cheesy

It veries by week.  But a big thanks to suchmoon and ofcourse the ones that let theirs roll from last period into this one:

17 blocks  or 2.5-3 hours to go until picks open. If we learned anything from the last time - let's not rush all at once Smiley. Picking your guess towards the end is likely to be more accurate.

The prize this time is

0.216 BTC

due to rollover from the previous contest and both philipma1957 and alh donating their winnings from the quick quiz (0.008 each - I rounded it up from 0.007-something). Thanks guys!
3924  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How do you get free power? on: December 02, 2015, 06:10:23 PM
Please remember that mining is the ultimate zero sum/queen's race game there is. The faster the miners that come out, the higher the difficulty and the quicker they become totally obsolete. It is a perfect market, therefore long term profits are impossible.

* Queen's race: Where you have to run faster and faster just to stay in place.

The mines are suspose to get more efficient to where it helps in race when switching to new.  Also value should reflect mining.

Value of BTC right is not bad.  it's not terrific or anything but I consider it to be a lot better then 230 we were at forever.  So there are some good things out there.

In this thread some are the tremedoous lucky with "free" power.  Those people are hard to beat.
3925  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is the best trusted website to earn btc? on: December 02, 2015, 04:54:51 PM
Trusted websites? Theres is a lot. faucets you can claim it right there right now. I guess that is the real trusted. Because they pay instantly. You can also go to trusted gambling sites. Some give free deposits and then you try to grow it. Just dont get hooked.

How do you consider gambling trusted?  I guess there are some good ones out there if that is your thing.... but you can trust overall you will lose.

I don't think faucet/gambling really should be in trusted list.   I can see a argument for some gambling that has been around a long time... a few might have a case.  But overall no on both I think.
3926  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking to start mining when I move. Have a couple n00b questions. on: December 02, 2015, 04:52:58 PM
Hey all, nice to be a part of what seems to be a great community!

I am moving into a new place with my girl soon and the power is included in the rent price. I've always been under the impression that if power is not costing you anything you can turn a profit much faster/easier.

Was looking at grabbing an Antminer S7 from the Marketplace here (Someone has one for $1400 without PSU). From what I've calculated that miner will net me 1 BTC in around 32 days or roughly one BTC per month. Am I way off here? We could really use the extra cash 1 BTC a month would bring and I can "afford" to buy a decent miner (In the $1500 range), however I am open to absolutely any option or any scenario. If someone knows of a USB miner that one could combine many of them that would net me either a better hash rate or a cheaper investment price. Or both, lol.

I've been an IT Tech for over 20 years so even if there is a specific miner that overclocks well with some modification. Surprised there arent any watercooling mods for these. I'm guessing that is because they're not just one chip when you're talking large number hashing miners. An SOC with a couple hundred cores would be awesome, watercool it and overclock the crap out of it. Again, if I am way off correct me.

I do not want to fill my brain with any misinformation, if I am wrong... tell me please. Smiley

That's about it guys, thanks!

Predicing a months can be hard... what calculator are you using to check ROI?

Also what is  your electricity cost, and do you have a vat/import tax?  With these 2 questions I can give a lot better anwsers.  And if to high hosting is another option somewhere it's cheaper.

But the S7 in forums you mentioned make sure to read up and use escrow on such a high dollar item.
3927  Other / Archival / Re: REVIEW: Pros and Cons of different Bitcoin Storage methods vs. Malware on: December 02, 2015, 03:30:52 PM
I'm not the one making things up.  I asked a simple question and you dodged it.  Did you make up criteria for "9) Military-grade offline wallet storage"?  Is there really any documentation showing that you meet any military standards? If so which country and what standards?

It sounds like you made up things that sounded good to you.  But did not follow any real requirements.

What military standards? What country's military is storing bitcoin for there to be any standards?

It is just common sense, and an armed bunker would be more a military theme than a civilian, I dont know any civilians that have an armed bunker in their backyard.

EM shielding, that is a military standard in all western countries for military facilities for insulating data inside the base, the rest of them are just common sense.

Any government standards like FISMA - http://csrc.nist.gov/
San's CIS Critical Security Controls - https://www.sans.org/critical-security-controls/

There are real frameworks out there that are valid.  I'm not trying to be rude.  I'm trying to keep this sounding the nicest way possible with being able to pass the information.  That is just some of the frameworks, there are MANY MANY more and compliance's security company's have to meet if dealing with US government.

Yours are ideas for what you think is needed for government/military standards.  But you have nothing to back up that has been vetted and proven needed, or that it makes them comply with (insert tons of frameworks and compliance here).
3928  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How do you get free power? on: December 02, 2015, 03:00:38 PM
If I was doing this in a big way then I think batteries are a no no, just too expensive & they need replacing at some point. I think the thing to do is to "cheat".  Smiley

Have a grid tied system and run the miner off the mains in the usual way. Choose an appropriately sized miner for the overall solar power you are generating and then just keep tabs on the solar power you have generated and the grid power consumed. Then do some maths on an ongoing basis to check the profitability. Over a period of time you will get exactly the same result as having a large battery bank, but without the initial and ongoing replacement costs.

Rich
Oh yeah, but then you're using the grid as your battery. If you're doing this in a cabin far from humanity that's what you will need.

Also it's interesting to note how much power you need to run a modern-ish life off grid. A fridge pulls 100-200 watts 24*7, there's 20% of that amount. Lot of batteries and panels needed to run the modern life. So go hug your utility guy sometime....

I think this is true.  Miners use a LOT of power if using a decent sized one.  You easily can run thousands of watts on miners even in "home" mining.  And "hobby" miners are even more then that.

I just do not see a big payoff when you spend the amount on even just solar panels.   Going cheap electric is going to win every time.
At the current difficulty and the high-priced ASICs even miner with cheap or even free electricity will have a hard time getting an ROI.

We had a LONG time of very low nice difficulty changes so keep that in mind when looking at it.  Will this difficulty change hurt?  Yes sure will.

But overall we are not doing bad, unless we continue at this rate.  If we continue at 10 plus per week yes could be bad if market does not follow.
3929  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How to make btc faster throug mining? on: December 02, 2015, 02:59:00 PM
Here it is always the same problem:
People talk about things they do not know.
People talk about something and so maéke other people wrong.
So far not one "winspiral's systems user" has wrote here...
Here we have only writer who know absolutly nothing about what they are talking about.
They ask and anwser in same time.
And above all the questions have no sense.
Why ask pictures of all U2's if every boddy knowing about the system know that ONLT ONE U2 is "sometimes" running?
If it runs...well (because often it does not run and often it freeze all the computer...etc...) it make 500 satoshi or so per day.
it does so absolumently no matter if the U2 exists or not.

The clever people understand or ask clever questions and read before the dedicated topic about the U2cloudmining.
Please go on this topic and it is better to talk about there.

So your cloud mining system is of 1 U2?  I ask as I don't know the anwser, it seems to be that from anwser.

Just not what I expected.  I do respect if you gave me a straight anwser there, then talking in a tone that gets nowhere.
3930  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to learn mining. Where should I start? on: December 02, 2015, 02:14:41 PM
Just include in it if that is your plan "Here is something to learn but you are going to lose money". To blanket suggest a miner just does not really work very well.

Hopefully OP did not buy S3 or anything before doing ROI.  But learning and possible gain is much more fun then learning and loosing

I don't want to start a discussion about this... I acnowledge that an S3 will never ROI, i just tried to answer the OP's question... A cheap piece of hardware that'll allow you to learn about mining.
Offcourse it'll be more fun if he actually makes a profit, but in that case he needs to invest quite a bit of money and buy an S7 right away Wink
I learned about mining with an antminer U2 i bought for 0.11BTC, i knew i would never ROI, but just like the OP, i wanted to learn Smiley

There is no discussion you mentioned a miner that would be running at a loss.  After it was brought up you then said you "but the OP stated that he's just trying to learn, not to make money... "  Of course he want's to make money to.  He never said he wanted to take a loss.

This is silly.  I worded my response nicely I thought, I'm not looking for a argument just that OP gets proper info.  If you make a suggestion where you know they will not make money you should post that, that is a big thing to leave out.

Before sending him to a S3 we really needed exact electricity and amount he is willing to spend.  I suggest asking these next time before throwing out S3.
3931  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to earn Bitcoins? on: December 02, 2015, 02:09:38 PM
Faucets always give out dust. You will barely get any Bitcoin by using faucets. I used to use faucets years ago, and looking at them now, I regret wasting my time on them. I recommend you find a more efficient method, such as joining a signature campaign or even selling a service or product.

Cant you see he is a newbie. Signature campaign for newbies today are really not that present. Just dont mind him doing faucets. He will soon learned some new ideas while ranking up here.

You learn nothing from doing a faucet.  Typing a capatcha is a waste of time over and over.  He would learn more reading the site then being on a faucet.

No matter the rank faucet is cents per hour... which is not good.  So you can't really justify that bad of pay even with "he is a newbie".  No one should be doing it at current pay.
3932  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: B-Eleven sha-256 ASIC miner on: December 02, 2015, 02:03:59 PM
Well, I have ordered a semi-professional noise meter and an IR-thermometer, because they have confirmed once again that they expect this miner will arrive soon.  Roll Eyes Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Do you not find it odd they are only who has said soon?   Normally a site or two will talk about it if really close.

I think it's further out then "soon', but I would love to be wrong.  But i just don't see the chatter I expect us to have once it's close to release.
3933  Other / Archival / Re: REVIEW: Pros and Cons of different Bitcoin Storage methods vs. Malware on: December 02, 2015, 01:58:48 PM

How can you say it's solid?  Have you used it.... guessing not.. all you have is a fictional story about it.  It keeps getting more and more far fetched to help anyone with storage.

You can do the back/forth all day.  For example on your last post sure even if you have all 100 percent honest guards what if a bigger group of bad guys decided to take it over and try to force your BTC info out of you... it makes no sense to go back and forth on scenarios like this.

How did you even come up with "Military-grade offline wallet storage"?  Is there set documentation on what it should be or did you make up what you thought should be?

But you are fantasyzing about about wild west scenarios.

There are no armed gangs roaming around streets and raiding places, where do you live in Somalia?

Even in the most crowded cities banks have 1 or 2 security guards, and bank robberies are rare too. You would imagine a post apocalyptic world where para-military gangs roam around and pillage everything. That is not what happens in the real world.

In the real world if you have 4-5 armed guards, nobody dares to attack it. You watch too many movies.

3934  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S5 mending on: December 02, 2015, 01:00:56 PM
You're right. I think Bitmaintech has a detailed circuit diagram Smiley. I've written them to send me it. If they dont send it i promise I'll do the work. It's not a difficult thing, its very schematic. I've shocked some puritan things on it (eg. the oscillators and the VRM). The problem is that I'm not a professional pcb designer and I'm not so familliar with that CPU arrangement. So every information is a great help for my mission.
I think the board is the same on both v1.91 type, only difference is the small heatsinks. I have only one board with small heatsinks from the last (secondhand) batch but its working (yet) Smiley.

I'm sure they have it along with many other document's and information on it.  But chances of them opening up and actually giving it out to someone I say is very small.

At this point you pretty much can't do anything on a bitmain machine without breaking warranty.  Which I understand they want it to be them to touch and don't want people doing mod's without losing warranty.  But they have sure tightened up compared to where they once were.
3935  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Diff thread Nov 23 to Dec 7 Set up stage- Picks CLOSED! on: December 02, 2015, 07:49:09 AM
Estimated Next Difficulty:    80,268,861,794 (+10.38%)
Adjust time:    After 752 Blocks, About 4.8 days
Hashrate(?):    578,011,772 GH/s

swinging it! big swings form now on.....

And price stabilized a little above 250 so at least not sinking right no.  No we need a upswing on price.

I'm really hoping this is not a new trend on 10 or more ... I like 5 much better.  Someone is making a lot of equipment right now, more likely a few are making.
3936  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to learn mining. Where should I start? on: December 02, 2015, 07:45:51 AM
Honestly with 10 cent's I'm not sure a S3 would be my first choice.  Do some ROI math but S3's are just not efficient these day's. They are great machines and built like tanks... but at 10 cents unless a bargain I dont see ROI happening.

I suggest looking into new miners and running ROI math.  Make sure to use one like https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/calculator so you have difficulty changes.  But try a few different miners in there.

Also never invest more then you can lose mining is not guaranteed ROI.

try with s5 directly, it's more suited for your case, and you can always resell it, then you can go for the beastly S7
s1 and s3 i would avoid at this point, they earn you peanuts, not worth it at all

I agree with both notlist3d and Amph, but the OP stated that he's just trying to learn, not to make money... That's why i pointed him to an S3/S5... Offcourse, and S5 will beat the S3 from a ROI point, but as a learning device i would pick the cheapest one Wink

Just include in it if that is your plan "Here is something to learn but you are going to lose money". To blanket suggest a miner just does not really work very well.

Hopefully OP did not buy S3 or anything before doing ROI.  But learning and possible gain is much more fun then learning and loosing
3937  Other / Archival / Re: REVIEW: Pros and Cons of different Bitcoin Storage methods vs. Malware on: December 02, 2015, 07:39:41 AM

I still say I would take a paper wallet only I know, or a hardware wallet only I know.   I don't wan't guards if I was doing huge amounts of money compared to what they pay.

Greed is a strong thing.  Sadly some fall into greed and you could easity have a bad security guard.  Imagine when the security guard figures out if he gets your BTC there is no reverse button... I hope you don't get anyone who greed shines it's head to.

I think most bitcoiners learned the lesson "Trust no one" (at least when it is in bitcoin area) the hard way. Having to trust someone is always an additional risk. Like having coins laying on an exchange. They might have a vault and all but still... risky.

And i think you miss that wolfs are pack animals. They hunt in packs. One mafioso speaking about all the money they guard and their measly wager they get each month. Well... i would not be so sure about the outcome.

If i would have to trust i think i would collect the persons by checking their personalities very carefully.

Ok maybe you are right guys, but if you so much distrust self-picked guards (the ones that you pick personally, not from a security firm).

Then how do Bitstamp, Coinbase and Kraken store their bitcoin? To my knowledge they dont have armed guards guarding their office, maybe some low level security, but I`m sure they dont let them near their servers, which is a locked room only reserved for a few persons.

You let the CEO, CTO and the chief security have 1 key to it, multisigned, with 2 out of 3 needed to enter the room.

It's pretty solid, I`m not sure how can the guards get in and steal your bitcoins.

How can you say it's solid?  Have you used it.... guessing not.. all you have is a fictional story about it.  It keeps getting more and more far fetched to help anyone with storage.

You can do the back/forth all day.  For example on your last post sure even if you have all 100 percent honest guards what if a bigger group of bad guys decided to take it over and try to force your BTC info out of you... it makes no sense to go back and forth on scenarios like this.

offerwalls are a great way to earn...

by the way, I added coinbucks to my blog (http://blog.smartcoin.pw/p/earn-bitshares.html) - and its set to give the maximum percentage back to the user. means I do not make significant profit, and give it all back to the user. should be the best offering out there Smiley

If it was set to give the maximum to user wouldn't it give them all of it?  And you make zero profit not "I do not make significant profit"

Seems like your twisting words.  Either you do or you don't make a profit and it sounds like you do.
3939  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to earn Bitcoins? on: December 02, 2015, 04:34:44 AM

faucets will be the last in the list of the best ways coz faucets are just a waste of time to get very small amount of bitcoins. there are lots of better ways that is worth it your time if you want to earn Smiley

I wish people stopped posting them really.  Very few actually use them long term.  It is hard to get motivated at cents per hour.  And typing a capatcha does not teach you BTC.

So so many better things they could be doing with their time.   Even just reading the forum and learning something is a far better use of time.  With low level I would be curious if linked to faucet somehow.

Even just using the forum's till full member then join a signature campaign in future is much better.  You will thank me doing this vs faucet.
3940  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Review] Avalon 6 Miner - Winter Mining - Notlist3d - Also FAQ and Help on: December 02, 2015, 04:30:47 AM
Which frequentie are you using ?Mine is comming! Before i had the s5

I am using frequency 500 and fan speed 50

I am getting 3524 GH/s average after 2 1/2 hours, fan rpm 3210, temp 38 74 75, input voltage dropped to 11.8 from 11.9 when using 400 frq and 20 fan speed. I would say this is significantly quitter than S7, but not in a same room quite for longer period, I will be ok if it is running in the living room.

What PSU are you using right now?   With voltage being 11.8-11.9 it is going to run slower.

Some PSU's are just better then others on input voltage.  My EVGA 1300 is better then my Lighting 1300 when I was testing.  And really those cheap dell 750 PSU's multiple people have reported good luck using two of them.

I am using Bitmain PSU at the moment until I get 2880W PSU board from Finksy, then it goes to sidehack. I just checked with multimeter, and it shows 11.9 V. Are you getting better hash rate at higher voltage?

Yes you are getting a lower hash rate with the 11.9V.   I need to get a Server one sometime as it seems many have had good luck with more input voltage.

But right now I'm running a EVGA 1300 and it runs most of time right at 12.  It varies a lot less then the lightning 1300 I had did.
