3941  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Just got a 1T/hash 'FancyBitcoin Miner' - LOUD! on: March 31, 2014, 07:39:55 PM
Hello. I just picked up one of these: http://coinsfortech.com/shop/coincraft-1ths-28nm-asic-bitcoin-miner-with-power-supply

It works very well right out of the box at the speed promised and I am already getting coins out of my pool after only 30 minutes.

However it is LOUD! It is like having a hair dryer running.

It is in my apartment and it is just unacceptable how loud it is. Does anyone have some advice on how I can solver this problem? Some sort of some proof cabinet or perhaps a quieter cooling system?

About 6 months ago i had 15 BFL singles all running in a spare room.
The noise was unbearable. I really do think that the sound was messing with my brainwaves lol.
I cant even concentrate around miners i am sure they fuck with your mind somehow.
I had mine in a dedicated room with extra cooling and the doors shut but could still hear throughout the entire house.
I have nine running in my bedroom and more running in the other room. The trick is this: What causes noise with air fans is the blades stalling. Try slowing the blades down a bit with an in-line resistor, remove all the crap that is blocking airflow (grills, etc) and move the maximum volume of air, not the max speed.

Try pulling air through heat sinks, more efficient than pushing.

Try switching to water cooling if possible; I run an 8 chip jalapeno which runs at 30c with a Corsair H100 water block on the back of the board and the stock heat sink on the front. Yes, it's that simple. :-)

what's everyone's opinion - is it a good time to buy more?
Buy when everyone is screaming that the end of Bitcoin is tomorrow.

Buy when others are selling. Buy on panic. Never buy on greed.
3943  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [HOWTO] flash your jalapeno to 8+ ghs on: March 31, 2014, 12:43:02 AM
I tried to flash my faulty jalapeno with an AVR DRAGON, the good news, the mining software detect it but the bad the hash rate = 0 ghs.

I tried different firmware, would it be possible for somebody to share with me a right firmware for model 1256 model please?

Anybody can help me on this?
Just what did you flash? A stock jalapeno should be flashed with the 1.2.9 code compiled either for AVR 128 or 256 (to be honest if you compile 128 it will work on both types of chips), and make sure you set the device type to "LITTLE_SINGLE" and not "SINGLE" in std_defs.h.

If you're totally sunk send it over and I'll fix it for you.

Not all test work in the first time eventually they will perfected it. Russians has pretty advance delivery and defense systems. Just imagine 50 megaton thermonuclear bomb detonated in your city and russians still have +8000 more if its not enough.
*laugh* If you think anyone can lob a tsar bomba over here, then you really need a bit of perspective. Go look it up, see what a 50mt bomb is.

As for being worried? Nope. This kind of tech is exceptionally complex, and not having been kept up to date in the past 20 years is a good indication that it might have... problems... working.

This is so sacrilegious and mocking of Christianity.  Are you happy now?
Actually it's um... Judiasm.

The other problem is that we believe that we have insight into the motives of others, but others cannot see or understand our motives. That's why it's always easy to say things like "Other people have abortions because they are bad, but I had an abortion because of my unique situation and I'm good."

As for Gallelio, he was not punished by the Church for the Earth around the sun thing. He was punished because he was a flaming dick-head.

If you don't need the money, don't sell. Think of this as variance.

As for myself, I'm mining away in the black here, and spending small amounts of bitcoin on stuff like Wii U's, parts, and household stuff from Overstock. I want bitcoin to be something people can actually transact in, as well as a store of value.

Besides, that drives TX fees, and lord do we need TX fees....
3948  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining difficulty slowing down over the next 3 months? on: March 28, 2014, 06:38:27 PM
Sort of. Problem is this could also be the ultimate "dollar auction" where people have to mine continiously to cover and minimize their losses.

Yep, this is going to be brutal. And I don't even see much new stuff coming out, so when the big stuff hits, oh well.

But it points out a truth: As long as there is a difference between electricity price and bitcoin mining profit, there will be more miners sold. However with the price drops in bitcoin overall and the cost of miners, one can easily run into a place where there is no proverbial "air" to breathe. Buy stuff with care.

Part of the reason I gave 40gh (my 20gh Jally, a 10gh jally, and two 5gh units) to my son was to teach him this very important lesson: Don't run a business at a loss. When the cost of electricity exceeds the profit from the miners, he will shut them down no matter how much he loves them.

I will follow with my 900gh of Singles. Never run a business at a defined loss.

3950  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Hacking a BFL Single/25 to 48gh and beyond..... on: March 28, 2014, 01:24:39 AM
So anyway a quick update: I installed 7 more chips on my other single/30 a few weeks ago, ran well at 56gh overall. However last weekend I powered it down and it came up with only one side.

Turns out the 1850 chip wasn't working right, so I pulled it and replaced it. Now one set of FETs is working, but the other is not. Enough to keep the board hashing with a fan pointed at the running FETs but still kind of odd.

And I have another single board that has one side down. At first I thought the problem was the 1850 and swapped it, but sure enough 0 volts. Then I found the FETs were shorted and replaced half of them. Then I checked the caps and found one of them (the one between vcc and ground) was shorted, which was shutting down the chip. Pulled the cap and the board is coming up but only at .6 volts, which is kind of odd.

Just got a new set of FETs in, will replace this weekend and see what happens. It would be nice to get the other 30gh running on this board.

Never dull, always fun.
3951  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [HOWTO] flash your jalapeno to 8+ ghs on: March 26, 2014, 02:52:20 AM
Eh, as long as it's hashing I would stay with it, especially with two chips.

When you have 8 chips on a Jally, you want to tune it down a bit for no errors. Reason being that errors cause heat, and heat will drive you bats with an 8 chip unit.

Mine as much as you can. And good job boosting it.

Well, I just moved 30gh over to Nastyfans. Let's see what p2pool can do over the next week or two. I'll move another 300gh tomorrow. Or maybe tonight if I can figure out if my shares are being accepted to the right wallet.

Well yeah. Technically I cheer at every delay and boo at every chinese clone. Because I'm thinking of numero-uno here now :-)

We'll see what happens.

They um... said they would be doing work. And that things might be down. No biggie, mine somewhere else for a bit.

Obama or Putin could start WW3 easily either openly or secretly.  This is NOT hard to do.  A little mistake with a ship, plane, missile or sub could do it on either side.  Luckily neither of them really want it.
Given that the Russians sank their own sub the last time they tried to launch a torpedo, I don't think this is a very big problem these days. These things are complex, and after 20+ years of neglect they probably will not work too well.

Unlike the AK47, which you can bury in mud for 20 years, dig up and fire....
3958  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: serious ROI on: March 23, 2014, 08:12:54 PM
Mining is not profitable because bitcoin is a perfect marketplace. There is no place to earn long term profits by mining bitcoin alone.

Adding value though *can* bring profits. Supporting the network with rational transaction fees could do it too, but that is work beyond just "mining coins"

I have to agree; I was thinking we might have a few sets of 10% increases, but it looks like another 20% coming, and more on the way.

Not sure where all this power is coming from. I guess it could be antminers. Whatever the case, I'm looking at turning my 65nm equipment to "max efficiency" mode by June and probably shutting them down by August.

Side thought: If transactions don't pick up then bitcoin is going to have a problem. With more Tx fees, the difficulty problem would be somewhat mitigated. Doesn't seem to be happening.

I think so. I dropped my hashing to 350gh here, which should give me a .04btc payment daily. For the second time I'm up to .10+btc balance, in queue for over a day, and "5 blocks to go".

So it looks like it's just going to build queues of payments.
