That's it. Thanks for posting the link, it was really helpful. It's all green here. In fact the received traffic is in Mb and the sent is Kb. At MacD, the graph was mainly red. I know there is interference on thir hub, because I can't connect the Chromebook there. I didn't realise it was that bad though.

Yes, it should be mainly green for you while you are stil synchronizing. You will obviously send data even though you dont have the full blockchain available, but most traffic should be going your way.
3982  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Can a signature be reused in a new transaction to steal coins ? on: December 20, 2015, 09:08:01 PM
Blockchain explorers contain alot of signatures in spent coins transaction in the scriptSig part of the transaction, can the attacker reuse this signature in a new transaction to steal coins received on this address ?

No, the signature is only valid for the given inputs and the given outputs of a transaction. Once the transaction is confirmed the inputs are no longer valid so they can not be used again. The siganture however is not valid for different inputs. So an attacker could only create a replay attack (send the exact same transaction again) which would get them banned by their peers over time as they keep broadcasting invalid transactions.
3983  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Cannot find my transaction on blockchain / No confirmations after 48hours+! HELP on: December 20, 2015, 08:59:10 PM
Wow. I've just finished syncing my wallet, and then did zapwallet...it's removed my conflicted transaction from the transaction page, and my 6bitcoins have NOT been put back in my wallet. Have i lost my bitcoins for ever? Surely this should not be possible?!?! All i did was send 6 bitcoins to my BTC-E wallet, and i get all this hassle and the loss of 6bitcoins because of this! What do i do? If anyone can get my 6btc back, a 1BTC bounty will be handed out.

Were the coin you used confirmed before you issued the transaction or did you quickly create a transaction after you received them? I ask because -zapwallettxes removed all unconfirmed transactions, received and created, from your wallet. It does not remove confirmed transactions or private keys/addresses.

It's quite interesting. It looks as if they may monitor activity, because it seems to slow down after a while. If I log off, and log on again with a different address, then it speeds up again. I hear what you say about the port, and that answers the next q. I was going to ask. Smiley

I guess they limit usage per session, but its most likely automated.

When I started, I could click on the activity bar, and I got a pretty activity graph. That facility seems to  have gone. Is there a way to get it back?

I think you are looking for this:

Its under Help -> Debug Window -> Network Traffic
3985  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Active Connections on: December 20, 2015, 08:42:32 PM
I have about 6-8 connections. How many connections are necessary for effective connection to peers? The minimum?

Effective connection for what? The minimum you need is one connection.

If you connect to only one peer, if the peer has bad connection to the network, then will you have bad connections too?

Yes, by default though bitcoin core will establish 8 outbound connections. If your machine is unable to hold that many connections you should probably not run a full node. The chance that all 8 peer are badly connected to the rest of the network is very small as they each hold at least 8 connections as well.
3986  Economy / Reputation / Re: Accused of participating in a signature campaign on: December 20, 2015, 08:39:31 PM
2 hero members gave me a negative feedback just for participating in the signature campaign

My yobit campaign was showing inactive so I applied to double bot Signature campaign.
I asked the member tht is it a ponzi site or not he told that he was no way related to the site and neither am I.
I am just trying to make some living here.
Please help me remove this negative trust.

Hey please remove the feedback u gave to me I dont if its a ponzi scheme or shit.
My yobit campaign was showing inactive and I am just trying to make a living here.
Plz remove the negative feedback.
Regards

#1 You are impatient.
#2 I dont believe a word you are saying.
#3 You make a living off of 0.013 per week?

Anyway the rating is change to neutral as promissed. I tend to keep my word. I know EcuaMobi will not change the rating and I dont think it matters much anyway as you had negative rating before joining the campaign.
3987  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Payment using both tumbled and un-tumbled coins? on: December 20, 2015, 08:33:29 PM
This is an important issue, thanks for bringing that up. Mixers should be switched from time to time. It might be even a good idea to use high volume services as mixers, e.g. old long running casinos or exchanges. You can also go the extra mile and use an exchange that also trades in alts and switch currencies for mixing sake.

Do you mean I can transfer bitcoin to one exchange and buy altcoin, then move the altcoin to another exchange, then sell the altcoin to buy bitcoin?

Yes, for best results use an alt that was created for privacy and has the needed volume on both exchanges. This would require a bit of research first - volume and features of the various alt coins - but it should result in very well mixed coins that are very difficult to track.

The way I can imagine someone being able to track this would be if they had compromised both exchanges, your method of masking your IP when you connect to them (e.g. Tor or a VPN) and(!) the alt does a poor job in hiding the origin and/or destiny of the transaction. If the exchanges lack volume it does not matter how good the alt coin is. If you are the only buying and selling 1 BTC while you only see 0.01 btc on a normal day, its pretty easy to draw a connection. If you are way over the volume you will also move the price of the coin around which would make this an expensive mix.

Disclaimer: Im theory crafting here, there might be gaping holes in this idea that I did not think about.
3988  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How far does that green line go? on: December 20, 2015, 08:18:01 PM
I've switched WiFi and it's much faster. I think I'm the only one using the service available for a whole shopping precinct.

So, if I'm creating a node, how can I use that to gain more advantage than just a simple wallet service? I know that mining is no longer an economic option.

If you create a node, is there incentive (payment) for you to do so? Do you need static IP address?

No, there is no payment and no you dont need a static IP.

The only advantage running a full node is

#1 the good feeling that you are doing something for the network. It might be only a little as you are not constantly online and will most likely only connect to 8 other nodes, but you do your part.
#2 the good feeling that all data are verified locally and you do not rely on anyone else. No slim or light wallet implementation is without trust (either in the network or a server).

Then what are the previleges of being a legendary? I dont see many campaigns for them

Most campaigns dont bother paying extra for legendary.
3991  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin for the homeless on: December 20, 2015, 05:38:45 PM
It's interesting to watch what is happening, so I guess I'll carry on with the longhand system for a while. I've got 3.5 years of data to go, and I guess it will slow up as there are probably more transaction per year in the recent years.

Correct. The early data is also not verified in depth until a checkpoint is reached.

I'm impressed with the way it keeps restarting despite the shutdowns and network failures.

As long as it shuts down cleanly you can do this as often as you like it will continue where it left off.

It's interesting that Sainsburys won't allow access to the blockchain, but then they do own a banking service. Smiley They do have some strange ideas about site restrictions though. They won't let me look at Kitco gold prices, but they will allow me to look at Kitco copper futures. They also blocked an electric shaver review page. Maybe they don't like clean shaven gold speculators. Smiley

Most public WiFi is restricted to certain ports (mainly http(s) and common mail ports). Bitcoin core uses 8333 by default which is rarely open. You might have a better chance if you can use a VPN as they are mostly allowed form public WiFi. You might also get high bandwith from a library or university. For a university you will probably have to ask someone to share WiFi as they are commonly restricted to students.

Currently my data directory is 57.6 GB it might take you a while jumping from free WiFi to free WiFi to catch up.
3992  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: ARMOUR on: December 20, 2015, 05:34:57 PM
He(armour) is very pathetic. He "bought" a $50 Nike gift card, but never pay.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1295234.msg13307682#msg13307682

He tried to sell that Nike gift card that he got from sir.noname here.

well there's your occam shorena...

Actually its not, but thats besides the point.

someone with such trail of questionable "deals" from 0.03 BTC all the way up to $2000 is unlikely to be honest about a "hack" either

Still. They could have 0.8 more than before, it makes no sense to offer a partial refund of 350 USD for a chance at 50 USD.

edit: also pay attention to the timestamps

posts in sir.noname's thread were made at the same time as the amazon thread so must be by the "hacker" so how did the "real" armour come into posession of a nike card

what a coincidence, right?

Looks like woodson's chances to a refund are melting quickly, yes. Well, I cant do more than put a rating up. Users should probably stop doing deals with armour w/o escrow, but its hardly something I can enforce.
3993  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary one day? on: December 20, 2015, 05:33:11 PM
How long does it takes to become a legendary member?
If you get the maximum amount of activity in every single 2 week period, it will take you around 110 weeks or 2.1 years.
(((775/14)*2)/56) = 2.1. Please tell me if this is incorrect.

Do legendary members have more chances to be picked up for staff?
No.

A year has 52 weeks. 774/14 * 2 ~ 110. 110/52 ~ 2.1 still. Probably just a typo.
3994  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Download BTC wallet so SLOW on: December 20, 2015, 05:17:07 PM
-snip-
I always shot the client down before is stop my computer.
But this morning my computer was blocked. I couldn't change from any program, any webpage, ...
The mouse of my computer stayed fixed at the same place.
I have been waiting for at least half an hour, and nothing changed on my computer. I couldn't do anything anymore.
So i used the "reset" button and when my computer started up again, i could open again everything.
BUt when i opened my BTC wallet i got an error on the blockchain and had to restart the download of the 6 years ... weeks again.
Again a work for a week or so.
Is there a way that you can recover your BTC wallet for the last date you downloaded the blocks.
I have a backup of my wallet and there i see the transactions and the amount i have in my wallet, but they will appear clear when the date of the blocks are coming in.

Its very unlikely that you actually redownloaded the data. After a crash the data often has to be rescanned though, which can take some time depending on your machine. IIRC after a power outage a while back it took me a day or so to rescan all the data on a 4. Gen i5.

If you assume this happens regularly you can avoid this by doing regular backups of the entire bitcoin core data directory. This will however eat up disk space.

If you want to move to a different wallet the best way to do this is to sync up once more and transfer all coins once to a new wallet afterwards.
3995  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin for the homeless on: December 20, 2015, 03:48:19 PM
Thanks for your reply. As you probably realise, I'm in the early stages of learning about Bitcoin. I have assumed that using Bitcoin core would give me full control of my wallet, and anything else would involve 3rd parties, or hosting on machines out of my control.

This is true for some wallets, but e.g. multibit can directly query full nodes (like bitcoin core) without disclosing information about your addresses. Electrum depends on community run servers that run a full node and provide information for you, but you can manually select different servers.

I hope that once I have downloaded the blockchain, I will be able to use this computer for transactions, and I will be able to move my coins onto a device without an internet connection. I was thinking about using an old mobile with an expired sim card, but that idea hasn't even made it onto the back of an envelope yet. Smiley

Its possible to seperate a wallet into two systems. One kept offline that has the private keys and one kept online that only knows about the addresses. That way the online system knows the balance of your wallet and can create transactions. Without the private key however the transactions can not be signed and are not considered valid. You would create such a transaction on the online system, transfer it to the offline system for signing and once signed transfer it back to the online system for broadcasting it to the network. For that the offline system must not be synced at all, only the online system must be up to date.

These systems also exist for mobile phones, e.g. bither would be an example that offers an offline wallet for a phone. I dont know if it requires a central server though.
3996  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to store an extremely high amount of money in Bitcoin safely ? on: December 20, 2015, 03:36:14 PM
Thanks for the detailed reply, philipma1957 but I wish to keep things offline..

What exactly do you want to protect against?

Are viruses your only concern? If so, a simple, old, offline laptop with electrum 2 is enough.

Are you also concerned about fires or other distasters that might destroy the laptop? If so, you could create encrypted backups of the seed for the offline wallet. Store them via something like shamir's shared secret scheme to only need n out of m parts. That way you can put the backups into several places, e.g. 1 with family, 1 with a very close friend, 1 with a safe deposit box, 2 in secret locations in the woods/mountains only you know about.

3998  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin for the homeless on: December 20, 2015, 03:19:05 PM
Hi  guys, I hope you will let a Bitcoin newbie join your forum, and I'd be grateful for you comments on some of my projects.

Newbies are most welcome here, its the scammers we dont like.

At the moment, I'm researching the difficulties in using computers in a mobile lifestyle in England. I started off with a Toshiba Chromebook, which is great for email and normal domestic computing, especially with the addition of an SD card, but I don't like the idea of Google copying all the Bitcoin files. Chromebooks aren't too good for html or video editing either. So I bought an HP notebook running Windows 10, and I'm setting up a Bitcoin wallet on that. I'll look at the security issues when I've got a working wallet.

Updating the blockchain using public WiFi is quite an experience, and I'm glad that it seems to allow me to keep restarting the synchronisation. I've been at it for two days now, and I've still got 3 years and 38 weeks of data to load. MacDonalds and a couple of hotels seem to be happy to let me do this, but Sainsburys and the local library seem to bar access to the blockchain. I reckon MacD is the first to profit from my project - I seem to be drinking black coffee, hot chocolate, and eating egg wraps for most of the mornings.

I have three accounts with Nationwide, and that is great for mobile banking, but most of the others banks are not very convenient, or have security risks imho - I won't use contactless cards for example. Bitcoin seems to be one of the best alternatives, especially if one is concerned about the future of fiat currencies.

That sounds like its unnecessarily complicated. I would argue that the most mobile wallet you can have is a stand alone electrum[1] on an USB stick. You might run into issue if you use other computers for that though. Still a light client (like electrum, multibit, etc.) requires less data and would be synced within minutes. Consider you want to pay for something and would have to wait 20 minutes for the sync to finish, that does not sound like a usable system to me.

I suggest you look into other wallets[2] besides bitcoin core. Try a few to figure out which suits your needs the best or tell us more about what exactly you expect from your wallet, maybe we can give you a suggestion based on that.

Any way to apply for a beta testing spot? I assume you want to limit the number of people and probably have enough, just curious.
It should be a open beta and should come pretty soon IIRC. No need to apply for anything.

I just hoped I might get into the cool kids beta. No biggie.
