43  Economy / Economics / Re: Technological unemployment is (almost) here on: October 29, 2013, 01:13:29 AM
Nice idea - but we're not going to be at technological unemployment for a long time yet - unfortunately.

It's the economic policies of governments that having created feelings of 'peak employment'.

I like the Genesis project, but that stuff is hundreds of years into the future.

The mistake with the dot com boom was not that people were wrong about their ideas - many of the business models of those dot com darlings that burst in 2000/2001 were valid and survive today under new companies. The timing just wasn't right. I would say the same about the genesis project.

EDIT: sorry, i meant the Venus project

buyBTC/sellBTC - Buy or Sell BTC at current market price

Huh  AFAIK Bitstamp API doesn't support instant orders. Some artificial limb?

Hi -

You're right, it doesn't.

The buy/sell methods place a limit order at the current ask/bid price. It's assumed that this is as good as a market order.

When they add market order, we will happily incorporate this to the API Cheesy

Cheers!

45  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bye bye bitcoin on: October 16, 2013, 10:47:43 PM
For good or for worse we are all invested in bitcoin.

Because we have taken the time to understand it, follow the news about it, post on these forums about it, be involved with it and for many people actually buy the coins.

Obviously nobody knows the future of bitcoin. The VC's say it's 80% likely to fail, I have no idea how they come up with 80% but I'll take their word for it mostly  - because probably they (with their large resources of time, money and research) know a lot more than me about it.

However for good or for worse there's no way I am going to sell my coins unless something cataclysmicly bad happens to bitcoin. At which point, it would probably be a terrible time to sell because nobody would be buying.

So I guess you could say that - for good or for bad - I'm in it for the long haul, and probably speaking for many others here too.

My 2˘!

(sorry this post is probably not good for the price)
46  Bitcoin / Project Development / [ann] Bitstamp PHP API on: October 14, 2013, 07:12:22 AM
A bitstamp PHP API

available on https://github.com/willmoss/bitstamp-php-api

The intention is to make it easier to trade BTC on Bitstamp from PHP scripts.

Included methods:

bitstamp_query - Query any of the Bitstamp API methods

ticker - Get current Bitstamp ticker

eurusd - Get Bitstamp EUR/USD rate

buyBTC/sellBTC - Buy or Sell BTC at current market price

Example:

$bs = new Bitstamp("KEY","SECRET","CLIENT_ID");

print_r($bs->ticker()); // show bid,ask & other price stats

$bs->buyBTC(10); // buy 10 bitcoins at ask price

$bs->bitstamp_query("buy", array('amount'=>'34','price'=>'90')); // place a limit order to buy 34 bitcoin at $90

Directions:

To install, place in your PHP directory and include into your files.

When you construct the method, you include your API_KEY, SECRET and CLIENT_ID, that can be found on the Bitstamp website.

Next steps:
Add more specialized methods for creating limit orders
Add methods for withdrawal, deposit & redeeming bitstamp codes
Add support for Ripple trading

enjoy!
47  Economy / Speculation / Further sell-off incoming on: September 08, 2013, 04:29:56 PM
Hi guys -

Just like to add a prediction for the price. Based on recent price movements, I think that we are going to see - over the next 2-3 weeks - a further sell-off in BTC, to below the 100 level.

I see the price stabilizing at around 90, barring any bullish news.

That's my prediction!

Cheers!

I already had mortgaged all the properties. Unfortunately it was not enough though to stop me from going bankrupt. I was unable to sell in the 'trade' window, only buy..
50  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Big Brother tracking bitcoin transactions on: August 20, 2013, 05:28:51 PM
No need to track bitcoin transactions. They are archived forever in the block chain, so why would you need to track them?

As long as the public/private key encryption holds up, there will be no way to link different addresses. So just create a new address for each TX.

If for some reason this encryption doesn't hold up, then bitcoin users could be in trouble and their anonymity would be lost. But, that could be a long way in the future.
51  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: new bitcoin game site - Bitnopoly on: August 20, 2013, 05:16:48 PM
Nice game, I played today but.... unfortunately when I was out of money, I was unable to sell properties.

Because of that, I went bankrupt.

Maybe fix that??
52  Economy / Speculation / Re: continued QE on: August 19, 2013, 11:17:05 PM
Buy `VIX`, its supposed to match volatility. It's a product traded on CBOE. I believe it's an ETF.

https://www.interactivebrokers.com/webinars/Trading_VIX_Futures_Options.pdf

I agree with the comments, they are kinda screwed. If they actually go ahead and taper QE, we're going to see some real turbulence in the markets. Turbulence at best, crisis at worst.

Already, there is some turbulence in the markets (it has kind of been going on since April/May of this year), it seems only likely to get worse in the coming few months. I think buying the vix could be a great trade right now.

I believe in the case of continued turbulence, the fed may actually end up withholding tapering.

If they do taper, I think there is going to be a crisis of some sort (probably from the East), and they may well be forced to step in with QE4.

However, I personally believe the likelihood of any tapering in the next months is really pretty slim.

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade to latest multibit from 0.4.x

Aside from my wallet, I have spent considerable time downloading the block chain and don't really want to have to download it again.

If I just copy MultiBit over existing installation, will it erease the existing block chain I downloaded? Even if block chain is stored in outside of main app package (in user homedir) - although I cannot see it in ~/Library/Application Support/MultiBit/ ...  will the new version be compatible with the old block chain download?

Cheers!
56  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoin Rain on: July 29, 2013, 12:14:10 AM
Friends,

I have secured an investigator to examine this operation, and now you all should simply face the facts:

No current depositor is ever going to receive any money from Bitcoin Rain.

Leandro has been desperately stalling & telling lies about "drawings for repayments" (really Leandro? a "lottery?") hoping that everyone here will simply give up, and move on.

If it makes it any easier to stomach; understand that your funds did not disappear in these recent weeks: They were simply consumed long ago (in a classic Ponzi scheme) to repay early investors their interest and withdrawals (of course other than what Leandro skimmed off for his personal use)

There never was a hacker, a theft, or anyone else at fault other than Leandro's creation of a Ponzi scheme (just like pirateat40)

You can shout at Leandro until the end of time (or until he shrinks off into the shadows) but you won't get any money from him - there is no more money left to further this Ponzi scheme.

It's over -- learn from it.

Sorry friend, but it is only your THEORY.

Shadows?? I am always here!

What you win with the posts like this??

L.

I can confirm that Leandro is a scammer and should have a scammer tag. This should, to be honest, be referred to the Scammer forum on bitcointalk.

I have business dealings in Brazil. My partner is ThiagoCMC, who is a moderator on the Portuguese forums. He unfortunately had to deal with Leandro last year, as a customer of "Mercado Bitcoin". Unforunately, Leandro stole his bitcoins and then claimed they were lost in a "theft". My partner lost 2,000 BTC.

Feel free to message ThiagoCMC about it. He speaks some English.

It is for this reason Thiago decided to set up Bitfication, which is a completely legitimate and honest - NON Ponzy Scheme - Bitcoin Exchange in Brazil.

I strongly recommend you to avoid dealing with Leandro or any of his associated businesses in the future. He is a known scammer and my client is *still* pursuing him for his money (now worth a lot more than it was last year).

57  Economy / Speculation / Re: Market has peaked, sell off incoming. on: July 27, 2013, 12:24:47 AM
Sorry, don't believe it.

I think it can only go higher from here.
58  Other / MultiBit / Remove MtGox USD from MultiBit? on: July 25, 2013, 11:19:24 PM
Please vote!!!

Nobody is using MtGox these days, the price is $5-$10 higher than the real BTC price.

It is too optimistic to have such a high price in MultiBit, it makes you think you are richer than normal  Grin

Vote to change the MultiBit price to another exchange, like BitStamp, or BitPay blended price..... https://bitpay.com/bitcoin-exchange-rates
59  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally from $65 to 95 caused by Satoshi Dice acquisition on: July 25, 2013, 07:16:02 PM
Interesting. You think they were waiting for the market to tank before buying the BTC and acquiring SDice?

I'm not sure if the acquirers were that smart.

In fact, I'm not really sure about the acquirors and who they were, or if they even existing. The fact they remain anonymous is a little shady. There's something fishy about the whole thing. Although I do accept that alot of ordinary shareholders got paid eventually.
60  Economy / Speculation / Re: Buying pressure stacks up. on: July 25, 2013, 07:12:51 PM
I agree, buying pressure is building up.

I don't see anything changing much over the next few weeks, but possible into late August/September/October, there is a high probability we will see the price rise back past $100. I would guesstimate the probability of it rising right now is greater than it falling, due to current favorable sentiment towards bitcoin.
