Well presumably our initial pool of talent is writers right now...

We could go like

"Don't see any articles on Devtome that suit your needs? Join DVCbank and make offers, our authors can write whatever articles you need!"

Then the authors get paid both by the person who wants a specific article written and by the word for writing it on Devtome! Smiley

Then also over time we could tone down the pay in shares from Devtome and the Devtome admins could instead start paying writers to write specific articles the Devtome actually needs.

-MarkM-

Sounds good to me Smiley
I would head towards a particular type of writing. Which is why artists and web developers came to mind. There are a lot of web/software developers on these forum and not enough artistic talent. There are also insufficient people writing installation guides and user guides for the web/software developed.
So there is demand for creative people just in BitCoinTalk.org. Plus the demand is from people who will have no problem converting from there currency to DevCoin.

What is the best way to reach out to the writers on DevTome?

Presumably the specific type of people we are after are people who are members of the DeVCoin community, since basically it is a ocmmunity currency site or community currency bank. Or maybe even the first initial start toward our "credit union".

-MarkM-

I was thinking about one specific skills to start off with. I am not sure what is most sought after, but lets say artists that are interested in producing graphics for web sites. We pull in all the artists in the community that are interested in working for payments in DevCoin. We then put in our press release that we are building a new resource for web site developers to link the creative resources with the people who need them. If we do not have enough artists we use the web developers requests for work as a way of attracting artists from outside the DevCoin community.

Its basically how dating sites are marketed at the beginning 100s of girls looking for a boy then 1000's of boys looking for a girl. Until the population is sustainable.

Once you have one skill sorted you see if the people providing work want other skills and target people with those skills.
Its a long and tedious process but if you keep promoting it seems to work out eventually. The key is to keep promoting, that's were the money goes.

Re being an economy like a nation's, yes, exactly. That is why something like Cyclos or the systems they use for trading person-hours and similar community currencies ought to be useful.

Users would not even need DeVCoin wallets unless they wanted to take the coins home with them as "cash".

Cyclos includes an advertising system its users can use to advertise to each other.

I set up an instance of Cyclos adapted to call its default currency "Devcoins" but only two people even bothered to register so next time the server rebooted I never bothered to set the thing up again.

I'll take a look, but to make it work we need to attract specific types of creative people and then market that creativity.
Are we up for that?

I believe for it to fully realize it's unique market position, it should focus on becoming the currency that people naturally want to convert all other crypto-currencies into, to get work done, like purchase inputs with and pay salaries from (so a form of cashflow currency - I don't know how realistic this is at the moment)

I would agree with HunterBunter. From where I stand DevCoin appears more like a country than a business. So NameCoin would be a business: domain names. DevCoin, however, is the economy of a country, facilitating trade (like fiat) but also being used by that country to create infrastructure to help its citizens do thing that increase DevCoin's value.

The first product of any country is manpower. Hence GeorgeM's idea earlier of matching skills with people who need the skills  is a good idea. Trade can be in DevCoin because you are matching DevCoin users. People from outside will need DevCoin to access the skills available so you increase the value of DevCoins.

DevTome is another example of that man power but the man power has no guidance and so it is not overly effective. As a consequence people complain about the quality of contributions because good and bad are equally rewarded but we all have our own idea of what good and bad means (which may overlap a lot Smiley ). So its great that people can earn by writing, but it would be better if people could earn more by writing things that could help DevCoin succeed (and the others earn a little less).

I was thinking about the possibilities of devcoin and what direction it should take in the future, and there was one thing I wondered:

If we want to pay creators/developers for open source stuff they create... shouldn't we first have some kind of open bulletin board where people can request useful stuff of all kinds?

If we want to create an open market where ideas and developers meet, we should not forget the need for a platform where people can express their wishes.

I understand that at this point most bounties and wishes are revolving arount the basic management, administration and financialization of the devcoin/devtome platforms, but shouldn't we early enough implement a simple yet partitioned platform for idea exchanges?

Good idea. How about a section of the new forum?

Maybe developer(s) is just a bad word to be using anywhere in promotions since people will likely repeat that word leaving out all the details as to "developers of what" ?
...

-MarkM-

I agree with MarkM the term 'developer' has all the wrong associations in the averages Joe's mind. Joe does not see Joe as a developer and probably never will.
The word 'developer' was a put off for me when I first came across DevCoin. With so many to investigate it knocked DevCoin down to the bottom of the list.

The problem is creative people use different titles in different areas and they all have negatives in Joe's mind.

Creator has a nice ring to it though. Sounds like we are all Gods Smiley

ThinkI

I think "creative people" would work better than "creators".

Because when Joe reads or hears that 90% of the coins go to creators, the default answer to "creators of what" is likely to be "the creators, duh, as in the creators of the coin/system itself".

But maybe if we say 90% of the coins go to creative people, and maybe try to even squeeze in "in general" right away, like "creative people in general", before starting to get all particular about different types of creative people creating different types of things, maybe four words is few enough more than two of them might stick.

...
-MarkM-

'Creative People in general' sounds good to me.

Of course that opens the market for 'Cleaner coin for people who tidy up after the Creative people'  Smiley

How should I factor Devtome income into my tax return?

According to Forbes, cryptocurrency income is taxable!

Once you withdraw currency from an exchange into government cash it would be taxable, by my understanding of my county's tax, as capital gains. You would be wise to then keep a record of how much you purchased the coins for and how much you sold them.

...

- Nova

Look up the tax handling for LETS in your area. LETS is a pre-digital versions of an alternative currency. Its been around a long time so the tax man has already tried to take as much as he can.
See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_exchange_trading_system
http://www.letslinkuk.net/home/theory.htm
For info on LETS.

Its highly likely that the tax man will look on Crypto-currencies in a similar way to start with.

Of course this is not TAX advice just my opinion.

Hi a DevTome question for a change Smiley

Are there any Policy documents on DevTome explaining what can and cannot be published there?

Thanks

On a different note a way of finding people that will take DevCoin as payment for services (ie a plumber or choose your own example Smiley ) would be useful.

Saw your post in the main thread, hope you get back to normal status soon?

Some DVC would be nice too Smiley

Thanks Chad,

Do we know how many people earning DevCoin live in any particular country? If not would we ever know?
Is there a way of contacting them? Other than this thread, which I assume most are not following.

Not really, we know who is receiving earnings from DevTome but they are on here (mostly active). As far as mining, no way of telling, they are all over since they could be merge mining with BTC.

Chad

I am not worried about the miners (no disrespect meant).
As I understand it, the goal of DevCoin is to support Open Source developers, writers etc. For this to be viable then DevCoin needs to be able to support a life style without going through exchanges or other middle men to do so. I do not count miners as they are probably going to go through an exchange no matter what we say or do. People who earn DevCoin, on the other hand, are exchanging their time for an income. They are not necessarily technically or financially minded, I think the income they receive should be easy to use.

Was not thinking of Amway but yes a way for paying for services and Auto delivered products, may be two ways to go.

Problem is people earning DevCoin, hopefully, live all over the Globe so how to reach them. You would need to address each country one at a time to start with or as you say get someone like Amway with international reach to accept DevCoin.

Its a good thought, I would start with the main interest countries first and as those pan out in your plan then move into other countries who show interest. That way you can make sure not to waste your time going with 100 countries when they don't offer any interest in the service or products.   Will be interesting to see what you come up with!

Chad

Services, then? Auto delivered products like personal hygiene products (razor blades, Amway-ish)?

Quick question to each of you DevCoin earners out there:

What would DevCoin earners want to regularly spend their DevCoin on?

If someone has already mention your idea please repeat it so I can get some idea of numbers...

Responses will be collated and reported back to this thread.

I'm a junkie for gift cards. Amazon, Cabella's, etc.

Thanks eeh, but gift cards indicate you wanted to buy something else...

I am looking for things you would regularly buy with DevCoin direct.

In this way we know what to target to make a difference to those earning DVC.

Maybe you will get your wish.   Cool

P.S. If there is a better way of doing this please point me to it.

Thanks

On the Marketing side the number of Forums counted for income seems a bit limited. Assuming I understand it correctly? Its hard to get BitCoinTalk members interested in 40s Music for example.

If you want more readers and ad clicks then expanding the Marketing possibilities may have an effect.

57  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [DVC]DevCoin - Official Thread - Moderated on: January 17, 2014, 03:17:01 PM
Hi I am new to DevCoin and DevTome so forgive me if I am going over ground already covered. I do have a little marketing experience and from this point of view I think as follows:

If we want more visitors clicking adds then we need to encourage the type of writing that brings visitors to click adds.

We should be able to find out what is popular from the ad provider.

Regarding press releases in general:
With a bit of planning you could announce a collection of short stories on some seasonal or otherwise relevant theme.

Similarly, I noticed a collection of natural remedies (did not read them so may be wrong) was growing in DevTome. So again, with a little planning and some organization of the content you could announce this.

In this way we can package parts of DevTome into products that are of interest to particular groups of people.
At the same time you will be attracting people that wish to contribute on specific themes. If you choose themes that attract audiences that click on adds then you have a way of increasing revenue.

I am willing to have a go at this to see if it has any sticking power.

58  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PROJECT] COINBUNKER - An ultra-secure, apocalypse-safe storage for wallets on: January 17, 2014, 01:10:09 AM
You might want to try https://cryptostocks.com/ for funding. It would help with the marketing as well since the people who might use the service are some of the people that provide the money.
59  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PROJECT] COINBUNKER - An ultra-secure, apocalypse-safe storage for wallets on: January 16, 2014, 10:18:31 PM
I'm not sure I would use it though. I prefer to manage my own wallets and am kind of paranoid with trusting another service to hold them. Also, even if I used such a service, I would still do manual backups just to be safe. So I don't think this would be very useful for me.

True Kabal, however, there are a group of people out there that use such services to store their wealth. There are also people with less technical knowledge than you who would like to outsource the problem of security as much as possible.

I think there is a need for the service, the question is how much and who?

We should launch a new coin, for buying secure storage with, and see how the service is priced by the market Smiley
60  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: COINBUNKER - An ultra-secure, apocalypse-safe storage for wallets on: January 16, 2014, 08:27:34 PM
You still have your wallet on your PC where you do your payments, speculations, etc. So this is more like an ultra-safe wallet backup than a cloud wallet or something similar.

So the advantage to me is that I do not have to worry if my computer fails, gets stolen (assuming I encrypted my wallet).
How often could I backup? I think the ease of doing the backup is going to define your market.

I would still have the fear of someone hacking my machine and just transferring the coins away though. I could, however, take the orriginal option and store the coins in a separate wallet if I wanted.
How many wallets can I store?

if someone would manage to find out that there are Bitcoins stored in the bunker (very unlikely) AND if someone would pass all the security barriers (like video cameras, security guards, multiple steel doors that are locked, etc., which is extremely unlikely), he couldn't do anything with the files.

I would be more concern with an attack from within. You can make it very hard to get into a place, however, if there are employees inside then there are already people inside that can do some damage of theft.
