41  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why some platforms need X confirmations? on: November 27, 2015, 12:12:47 AM
There is always a risk that the blockchain might fork, which means there will be two blockchains for a short duration until the miners decide which is the best chain. Coins on the blockchain that gets discarded can be invalid on the other blockchain. After six confirmations it's safe to assume there has been no fork, and that your coins are safe. Most exchanges wait for six confirmations to protect themselves from the possibility of a fork.

If anyone with ties to the mining community could give them a nudge to update, that would be great.  We need more version 4 blocks before OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY can come out to play and all of this cross-chain awesomeness can occur.

I found this bitcoinity link that graphically and textually shows how many miners out of the 1000 last blocks were using the necessary updated wallets. It shows we are 49.07% of the way to the threshold needed before OP_CHECKLOCKTIMEVERIFY can be used to start the awesomeness.

Out of 1000 last blocks, 368 had version >= 4 , and 632 did NOT which is 49.07% of the first threshold (activation).

edit 2: actually, this link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=52.0 doesn't point to a specific area do you have one more specific ? On how one can learn about this more.

The Bitcoin Black Friday signature campaign thread which I am participating in is here.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1253069.0

This is a thread that lists most of the best signature campaigns currently active on Bitcointalk.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953.0

This is a thread where people sell signature designs for signature campaigns.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=799618.0

In it you find this quote explaining what each rank of Bitcointalk member is allowed to put in their signature. Basically the higher the member rank, the better the signature is permitted to be,

Quote
- Jr. Member: Links allowed. Max 150 characters.
- Member: Unlimited length.
- Full: Color allowed.
- Sr. Member: Size allowed
- Hero: Background color allowed

A few more options are to bid for advertising space on this forum. Every week the admin auctions slots for advertising space on Bitcointalk, and it probably gets more views than any other form of Bitcoin site. I think this is the link to the latest auction.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1253630.0

Some sites also pay users here to use their signature space as advertising. You can see Bitmixer.io advertised in the signature space of a post by Hellacopter a few posts above this one. It pays Bitcointalk users of sufficient rank a small amount of Bitcoins for each post they make to advertise its business in their signatures. You can read businesses signature campaign threads in this board.

There are sites that sell banner advertising for Bitcoin businesses, or advertising in other areas of websites like these.

https://coinad.com/

https://mellowads.com/

Some of them have pay per click business models, and others ask for a fee to put ads in a network of websites. Coinmarketcap has a banner ad at the top of its pages which tens of thousands of Bitcoin users must view. You probably have to pay to get advertising space on a premium Bitcoin website like that.

Fractals, fractals everywhere, a minibubble inside a minibubble but with one big difference, volume!  Grin

I see one last dump and then we are ready to $400, because... volume speaks for itself.

What was the cause of the spike in volume?

Was it only on Huobi or in other exchanges too?

It should be noted that here we do not use huobi or any of the other no fees exchanges as our measure (indicator) of volume.  Surely, huobi's volume can be a factor; however, it is only one factor and needs to be discussed in context and/or taken with a large grain of salt.

Apparently over a million Bitcoins have changed hands on Houbi today. I don't know how many Bitcoins are actively being circulated rather than dormant, but I don't believe any exchange has that much volume. Gox was the biggest exchange and that had far less than a million Bitcoins on it.

Could this news about China's securities regulator getting brokerages to cease swap business, and stopping existing businesses from extending upon maturity affect leveraged exchanges like OKcoin and Bitfinex? If it does could it stop movement upwards in the Bitcoin markets? I don't know if the news applies to Bitcoin exchanges that offer leverage.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/11/26/uk-china-stocks-swaps-idUKKBN0TF0ZD20151126

Quote
China's securities regulator has urged domestic brokerages to cease financing clients' stocks purchases using swaps and other over-the-counter derivatives, two sources with direct knowledge told Reuters.

The latest move by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) to decrease leverage in the equity market comes after CITIC Securities (600030.SS) was discovered to have inflated its swap trading by $166 billion, which it blamed on an IT upgrade.

The CSRC did not respond to calls requesting comment.

CSRC is mainly targeting the total return swap business, which in effect allows investors to obtain leverage from brokerages to bet on stocks traded both on exchanges and in the OTC market, said one source with direct knowledge of the matter.

According CSRC's window guidance, brokerages must cease such swap businesses, while existing businesses cannot be extended upon maturity.
48  Other / Politics & Society / Re: BREAKING: RUSSIA STRIKES TURKISH CONVOY AMID AIRSPACE DISPUTE on: November 26, 2015, 07:50:02 PM
This isn't even on the news sites yet, I don't think the recent rise of price has anything to do with it, so far.

But if proven true, I think will be more fuel to pre black friday pump that is happening

How will Russia's military actions affect Bitcoin's price?

I searched for the convoy strike news and found a few obscure websites verifying it, but no mainstream ones yet. Although I can understand how Black Friday affects Bitcoin's price I cannot understand how the Russian strike is going to affect Bitcoin's price.
49  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Tide Is Turning on: November 26, 2015, 12:12:18 PM
yes tide is rising again not much but hope will die last
pass over 340 expect to see it over 350 by end of day

It already has and it is not the end of day for another 12 hours Roll Eyes
Set that reach to $400 now.

There is talk in other threads that the next target is 285, and probably 400 after that. During the pump to 500 it went up 100 dollars in about 8 hours, so it's possible for the price to sail through target after target in less than half a day. Reaching 400 before the end of today seems possible.

It´s very strange, normally you would anticipate a price dropp just before black friday, I think a crash is still coming around christmas, or mostly the week before Smiley

No it would be the opposite in my opinion a Price rally as people stock up on Bitcoins before black friday, a price drop after the merchants convert the Bitcoins back after black friday sort of a double dip effect.

That's what happened during Black Friday week last year. There was a modest pump beforehand, and a dump afterwards. I had given up on a pump after watching the price decline until yesterday, and this pump caught me by surprise. Over £30 up in 24 hours is an extremely fast pump.

It's a more than welcome increase. I as trader would like to see these kind of unexpected increases more often Smiley When people expect a lot from Bitcoin, nothing is happening. When people aren't expecting anything, then the price is showing action. Let's not expect anything from the price, ok?

OK

I keep searching the news for another reason for the pump besides Black Friday but I can't find anything. Nobody really gave a convincing reason for the pump to 500, it just seemed to happen without any reason. I'm giving up expecting news to pump the price, it's like the news doesn't affect it.

btcchina order books have crossed to bidsum>asksum

panic buying starts? hope we dont go up too fast or fall back is inevitable

Btcchina is only showing 1k of bids to prevent a $30 drop. Looking at the orders a whale could move the market either way at lightening speed. I hope we don't get a hair raising spike that costs us all a load of cash for a whale to line his pockets with. If it get get above $250 and stay above it I'll be happy.
53  Economy / Speculation / Re: Big Dumps on Black Friday? on: November 24, 2015, 10:21:26 PM
I don't expect a big up or down. On average the price wil be stable, unless the whales try to manipulate the price again.

That's what I think. No matter how many buyers buy extra Bitcoins to spend on Black Friday, the shops will most likely sell those Bitcoins almost immediately which will result in a stable price. The exchanges will get increased volume, but that won't increase or decrease the price, which hasn't changed much in the last week.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin without Altcoin ? on: November 24, 2015, 09:52:31 PM
During the 2013 bubble people saw altcoins getting pumped crazily and bought Bitcoins to buy the altcoins with. Those altcoin buyers were pumping so much money through Bitcoin that I think it helped sustain Bitcoin's high price for longer than it would have held up if there were no altcoins.

Do other exchanges own significant proportions of the global Bitcoin network's hashing power? Could other big players start colluding with exchanges and wallet services like blockchain.info to prioritize their traffic? BTCChina has started a new trend now, and I don't like where it could lead.
57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buying a new car (or ?) with Bitcoin…. on: November 20, 2015, 06:00:25 PM
You can buy a whole range of used cars with Bitcoin at coinmotors. I don't know how their payment system works. I think they must use a service like Bitpay to convert the Bitcoins to fiat.

http://coinmotors.com/

edit]

I checked their website, and it doesn't load, you land in a directory full of files. That's extremely unprofessional of them. Maybe it's a failed Bitcoin venture, their bitcointalk thread is very old but only has a few posts in.

Everyone is getting so hyped and positive.  I can't wait to see the reaction of people when bitcoin starts crashing by just a little bit... Roll Eyes

Ach. Who gives a shit? This has been a nice shot in the arm and a welcome change of pace. It'll happen again in the future and fresh arrivals got a fun taste of 2013 even if it's a brief one for now.
it has, but to be honest, it came just as unexpected as the last huge bitcoin rise in 2013.  Who knows, this might actually follow in the path of our first bitcoin to-the-moon attempt Roll Eyes

I thought there might be another pump during the last hour but it's stopped now. When I don't expect a pump we get one, and when I expect a pump we don't get one. The moon shot today certainly resembled the 3013 pump, apart from that hair raising drop back down by $12 before it went higher.
59  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin is Illegal in Taiwan (China) on: November 03, 2015, 01:42:50 AM
They are definitely not the same country. Taiwan is also called the Republic of China, and the losers of the Chinese revolution retreated there after they lost. China is also called the People's republic of China, which is rather confusing, and probably why we refer to Taiwan as Taiwan.

1/3rd of all bitcoin in existence traded this week in China on one exchange Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cool Cool Cool

Oh??? maybe some coins were traded twice....

Go figure.  Isn't that called the velocity of money?
only twice?
high trading bots are working hard this days

I was merely attempting to make the point that in and of itself, the mere fact that the volume of 1/3 of all bitcoins in existence were traded on one exchange in one day, does NOT signify that the Chinese are faking the existence of the coins or engaging in fractional reserves.

So I agree with you that it is feasible that one coin could be traded well over 100 times in one day... maybe even 1,000 if there are NO trading fees and the coins path is frequent and minute microtrading back and forth.

I had the OKcoin chart running in real time in my browser, and the trades were so fast that there was almost smoke coming out of my computer after a few minutes! Loading a real time chart of any of the exchanges with fees doesn't drive my computer's CPU use up to that extent. Those OKcoin trades are their own bots competing with the other zero fee exchange's bots to fake the highest volume.
