Getting some good results, but one out of 7 workers always locks up after some minutes. GPU usage goes down to zero, shown MHash rate stays locked at last value, cursor is still flashing. Occurs only when the cards are overclocked, but the same and even higher OC values work flawless without this fix.

If the rig is going to be dedicated for mining only, I recommend not using a case since the cards will always run hotter inside. Just put the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and put some fans right above the graphic cards. You will have a much wider overclocking range. Especially with the 5830 you can easily squeeze out another 50MH/s for each card.

Also, if you have the chance, look for a 4 slot PCI-E mainboard. The MSI GD-70 boards were in the same price range one week ago (However I don't know how they are availiable in the UK right now), solid products and perfect for mining. You will always have the option to put and additional card in.

MSI 790FX-GD70 is a great board and if you find a dealer still having this in stock, it's probably the best deal you can make. I bought two of those for 90€ each (125$). Four PCI-E slots and running great with 4 cards eqipped.
MSI 890FXA-GD70 is the successor with some nice new features but not really needed for mining (USB 3.0, ESata, ...). This one even has five PCI-E slots but one is only usable with a riser or a single-slot card.

If you are running just 3 cards, i still recommend a 4 or more-slot board since you can leave out one slot to let the cards breathe a little more. With three 6970s heat will be a major issue.

Depending on the Graphic card layout, it's not always the best to put the fan behind the cards. If your cards have a "tunneling" system where the whole fan and cooler are sealed off and only the two sides are open, put the fan inside the case to blow into the cards.
If the cards are more open like mine, the card will get it's fresh air from above the card and blow air into both directions. If you place a fan on one of the venting sides, the air flow will stop somewhere and heat up. It's better to place the fan on top then.

Using two 12cm Fans, both lying right on top of the cards, blowing air into the gaps. I'm getting 56 - 74°C, all cards OC'ed from 800 to 950Mhz.

I had the same issues running four cards. It's simply because the second card gets all the warm air from the cards right next to it. I solved it by slightly bending each card a little to get a bigger gap between them and I put a 12cm fan right on top of the gaps. Reduced overall temperature by about 10 degrees C and the hottest card is now on line with all other cards, maybe 4 °C more. That of course requires a non-case setup. I'll make some pictures as soon as I get to our "mining place" Cheesy

Hi,

I've been registered here since some weeks now and read about mining hardware with great interest. I decided to invest something into new hardware with a friend so we bough two mining rigs with 4 5830 cards each. I've been able to optimize the outcome quite a bit already but I'd like to see if there is more I can do - but therefore it would be a lot easier to take part in the discussion rather than reading only Smiley

Here are some interesting pics of our setup Wink

(One card is still missing because we can't figure out how to properly connect it to the PSU in order to prevent immediate cable burn O.o We had to buy two different PSU models and one just doesn't have enough connectors.)

Best regards from germany!

I am running 1 pc with 2 cards with just dummy plugs. I had to use the monitor to set it up and get it installed but then unplugged it. The only issue I have now is when i connect to it via Teamviewer I can only see the first monitor show and not the 2nd. Miners seem to be running fine though.

What happens if you don't use the dummy plugs? Can't you use teamviewer then?

With all due respect, you have not done nearly enough research to start mining.  You need to ask yourself whether you know enough about bitcoin to actually mine your way to profitability (i.e. research "difficulty").  Have you looked at trading, the price volatility and a lot of historical data to determine for yourself whether you will ever recover your investment little enough make a profit?

It is clear that you have not done much research because the answers to all your questions are easily found in these forums.  Don't jump into the ring until you know exactly what you are up against.  You can do the research diligently in a short amount of time (referring to everything that I have mentioned).

I hope you take this response seriously and make a sane and logical choice and not an emotional one (driven by excitement and lust for easy money).

I think I have done enough research considering bitcoins itself, trade value and EVEN difficulty, yeah!, that is not what I asked for. All I want to know is how to get my rig up and running, it's just a hardware issue. Sure, I can just buy all that stuff that I already put together in some webshops, but I tend to ask for advise before encountering problems which could have been avoided with just a little question at someone who is already in this business. We're talking about 2000€ here, I'm not a guy who spends such amounts of money hoping everthing will turn out just fine.

I searched this forum for hours regarding the VGA dummys, but all I came up with were people already knowing everything about these things and discussing what is best for overclocking etc.
51  Other / Beginners & Help / Total newbie, some concerns about investing in two rigs on: June 12, 2011, 04:56:21 PM
Hi there,

the big Bitcoin wave just hit Germany so I want to try this with two rigs mining me some money. But I have some concerns and I am not 100% sure about these things:

  • Monitor dummy plugs:
I want to run my two rigs with 4x 5850 cards each without any external I/O. Do I NEED at least one monitor to keep them running?
Or do I just need one monitor to boot up?
Or do I even need 8 dummy plugs for each card? Can those be bought or must they be built by myself?
  • Two rigs, one account? How do I mine with two rigs to the same wallet file? Or won't it matter if I just have two wallets and simply split everything?
  • Graphic card compatibility: Are there any graphic cards that won't fit on the MSI GD70 boards - like physically not fitting next to each other because they are too high?
Can I mix up cards from different labels, like 2 Sapphire, 1 Asus and one XFX?
