41  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Anyone daytrading at Mtgox? on: August 30, 2011, 12:24:11 PM
What do you guys think of CampBX platform?  My account there was just funded this so starting to take their platform for a test drive this week.

I am using their API and it works fine. Customer support is good and they seem professional. Unfortunately they don't have much volume... Even ExchB has better liquidity.
I would like to see some advanced trading options enabled though (such as short selling). I think it might be good for bitcoin.

----
My general feel is that CampBX is a little more robust than other exchanges. I might be wrong, but they seem more committed towards building a serious trading platform while other exchanges still have some bugs to iron out.

For example, TradeHill and ExchB add orders to the orderbook before matching them. I never traded before bitcoins, but this seems like a huge mistake to me. My bot has to specifically ignore bid orders higher than the lowest ask order (and vice versa). Dealing with these undocumented tiny details is really annoying.

Yes, you are right, orders that would immediately remove liquidity should never be posted in the book. I've noticed the same thing on TradeHill with my API app where the market will appear crossed (best bid higher than best ask) for a period of time, although haven't come across the issue on ExchB yet.

Has anyone tried ExchB?

You can't.  I think other exchanges have the opportunity to come in and gain some market share by catering to higher volume traders, so I've been trading on exchanges other than Mt. Gox
44  Other / Meta / Re: Forum for Exchange API software development on: August 29, 2011, 05:28:12 AM
A section related to developing software applications using the exchange APIs.  ie. I know a few members that are developing automated trading bots as well as a number of developers creating web applications that utilize data from API service offered by the various exchanges.

Cool!  I'll be following it.  Will have a trading/programming blog of my own up at some point.

works ok here
47  Other / Meta / Forum for Exchange API software development on: August 24, 2011, 02:02:46 PM
I would like to suggest an "Exchange API development" child forum could be added under the Project Development Forum.  It currently seems like posts for automating trading of BTC on the various exchanges as well as developing software utilizing the exchange APIs is all over the place on this forum, and it would be nice if the software developers and active BTC traders had a separate child board to converse.

How can we go about doing this?

Thanks,
-Rob
48  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Tradehill orderbook on: August 24, 2011, 06:11:55 AM
This is off topic, but we should set up a board/forum for Active/Automated BTC traders.  It would be interesting to hear what others are working on and some of the challenges they are facing.  I know that that developing trading software can be a somewhat secretive and developers and traders for obvious reasons do not want to divulge too much, but at the same time it would good to be in touch with others developing software.

I'll try contacting the forum moderator to see if maybe an "Exchange API development" child forum could be added under the Project Development Forum, unless there are other ideas.

Thanks,
-Rob

I'm just starting the process of writing applications against the exchanges APIs so I've been curious what sort of gotcha's I'd start running into.  I've been using Interactive Brokers API years now and it never ceases to amaze me what sort of work-arounds I have to come up with sometimes to get things to work.

I'm not recording market depth, but in the a UI component that I have set to automatically refresh market depth I have occasionally noticed a buy order show up that is higher than a lot of the asks, not sure if its an error on their side or what.
51  Economy / Services / Re: Mining contract - 8,000 MH/s on: August 23, 2011, 08:00:46 PM
You say guaranteed 8000MH/s - how can the renter be assured of this guarantee?  The way I calculate it, I would make just over 35 BTC in 7 days with 8000MH/s.  So why only charge 26 BTC?  Do you just need a short-term loan?

Just trying to figure out "what's the catch".  What is your reason for doing this?

I have a few reasons for doing this:

1)  I want to establish credibility amongst the BTC community.  I think engaging in some short term mining contracts, and delivering exactly what I promise (or over-deliver) will be a good start.
2)  I doubt anyone will buy a contract if it only pays back what you purchased it for.  Selling it at a discount benefits the buyer (ie, higher expected payout than purchase price), and also benefits me (I know I have 26 BTC at todays price versus 35 BTC at an unknown future price).  Business engage in this type of transaction constantly.....albeit perhaps not at this much of a discount.

As for the 8,000 MH/s garauntee.....I will be sending the buyer my pool stats periodically so he can independently confirm the mining speed.  I suppose I could fake these, but if I was not delivering the stated speed, surely it would be reflected in abnormally low pay-outs.

I've been working on getting my own mining farm set up and I have come up with the same reasoning on deciding how mining contracts should be priced.
The miner is able to hedge their exposure to the USD/BTC exchange rate by selling their production forward.  The speculator (person buying the contract) is assuming the exchange rate risk and is therefore being compensated by being able to purchase the future production at a discount.

There could be occasions where someone may actually pay more to take delivery a commodity at future date, such as when the cost of storing the commodity is fairly expensive and there is a cost associated with holding the commodity, but that is not the case with BTC.

On my list of projects is to research what sort of interest there would be for a site offering bullion for BTC.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Open letter to Bruce Wagner on: August 22, 2011, 10:40:38 PM
I'm a big fan of Bruce and the show and I know that he put a lot of effort into putting this conference together.  I wasn't able to attend the conference, but from what I've read from people who attended, it sounded like a lot of the big players were there and great ideas being exchanged.  I'm not so much concerned about the short term price action in the BTC exchange rate, but could it have been done better? Yes, but at the same time this will be a learning experience which will hopefully push the Bitcoin community forward and help to make an event that will be even bigger and more accessible the next go around.

That being said I was really disappointed as well after seeing Episode 38 that I was only able to see a few of the Keynote presentations on Saturday afternoon streaming online and wasn't able to hear much else on what was going on.  I've been asking around hoping to find someone who has posted the Breakout sessions from Saturday and Sunday, but no luck so far. :/

55  Economy / Speculation / Re: The August 23rd crash on: August 22, 2011, 02:13:07 PM
I think that speculators of a necessary part of any market, including Bitcoin.  Speculators provide liquidity and assume the price risk that the producers (miners), and consumers (merchants) do not want to accept.

Imagine how wide the bid/ask spread would be if there were no speculators present in the market.
56  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did TradeHill change their SSL certificate? on: August 19, 2011, 02:12:51 PM
Ok thanks Adam.  I was hoping nothing was amiss, but just wanted to be extra careful, especially given recent events.

57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Did TradeHill change their SSL certificate? on: August 19, 2011, 05:23:41 AM
Safari is now telling me it doesn't trust the ssl certificate on the TradeHill and my java API application is telling me that it doesn't recognize the Root certificate. I've sent a query to TradeHill tech support but was wondering if anyone else has noticed any issues.

You can view my portfolio at http://www.crobbo.com and if you have a project in mind, please email or pm me and we can go from there  Smiley

All the best, hope to hear from you soon!

59  Economy / Services / Re: Looking to rent miners (1.25BTC per 1gh per 24 hours) on: August 16, 2011, 01:39:57 AM
I'm just kinda curious why pay 1.25 BTC to get back about 0.5 BTC generated by a rig?
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: phoenix/phatk not finding 3rd GPU on: August 04, 2011, 06:19:27 PM
AMDOverdriveCtrl and fglrxinfo are both showing all 3 GPUs.  Is there anything special that needs to be configured in Phoenix given that 2 cards are 5830s and 1 card is a 6870?
