41  Economy / Scam Accusations / FastestCoins.com -- COMPLETE SCAM SITE on: June 20, 2014, 07:11:06 PM
Do not do any business with FastestCoins.com as they are a complete scam site.

What they do is have victims sign up to buy bitcoins from them.

They then go to LocalBitcoins.com and open a Buy order for the same dollar amount with a legitimate seller.

When the seller gives them his bank account information for the cash deposit, the crooks at FastestBitcoins forward this information on to their victim and ask him to go make the cash deposit, into what he believes is the FastestCoins account.

Once the deposit is made, the LocalBitcoins.com seller releases the Bitcoins to FastestCoins.com and they keep their free BTC, while the victim loses his cash deposit and now thinks the LocalBitcoins.com seller whose bank account he deposited cash into is the person who ripped him off.

44  Other / Meta / If you're not sure about something, don't state it authoritatively! on: June 15, 2014, 03:39:49 PM
I know we all make mistakes but I have seen so many instances on this site and especially in this sub-forum where people are giving completely incorrect advice or answers to people with questions.

People, please, if you are not 100% sure about something, please state this when you give advice, or ask the OP to check with someone else as well. Don't state your opinion as 100% fact or give an authoritative answer if you yourself don't know what you're talking about.

Everyone else, if you see someone giving the wrong answer, quote them and correct them so that others reading the thread can see that this is incorrect information. We need to keep the signal to noise ratio as high as possible and try to make sure that correct answers are being given as much as possible.

Also, PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL QUESTION. Half the time OP will ask one thing and will receive answers to 20 different questions he didn't ask. People skim over OP's post for half a second, think they know what the question is and leave an answer that has nothing to do with the actual question.

Thanks for reading! Smiley

Any wallet but bitcoin-qt will have a sweep key function.  Don't import them because whoever found your phone may have them.  Of course, make sure to backup your new keys.  I'd recommend electrum instead of multibit.

Bitcoin-qt (now known as Bitcoin Core) also has the ability to sweep a key, it just has to be done from the console interface.
46  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Removing Bitcoin-QT data completley on: June 15, 2014, 08:33:06 AM
You can download the new Bitcoin-QT data, but it takes a long time.

In your frantic rush to increase your post count, you forgot to read the question that you were trying to answer.
47  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: escrow.com fake email scam on: June 15, 2014, 02:57:09 AM
try reporting to escrow.com support and see if they can help you

This is not a helpful suggestion. Escrow.com had nothing to do with it and was not involved in any way with what happened.

If I spoofed an email from Bill Gates saying I'm giving you $5 million dollars, would you contact Bill Gates and see if he can help you?  Huh
48  Economy / Services / Re: New 400 BTC Bounty Pales Roger Ver's 37.6 BTC Bounty for Return of Stolen BTC on: June 15, 2014, 02:55:22 AM
So this must be largest bounty ever offered in history of BTCBTCBTC.I think it should be featured in major magazines. Good luck to OP

Since the bounty is contingent upon PG first receiving the money, it's not really that newsworthy in my opinion. Now if PG had set aside that much BTC in a trusted escrow account to pay out to the winner, then that would be something else!

Feel bad for you OP -- that is a ton of BTC to lose. Hopefully that was just a small portion of your total holdings.

I wish the spacing between the letters on "PUBLIC" was the same as the spacing on "Address" ... love the rest of the design but that different spacing between characters all on the same line just looks wrong. Just my opinion.  Tongue

How were they able to login initially if you had 2FA enabled? Had you turned on the option on any of your devices for it to not ask for a 2FA code for 30 days?

Not a chance.

His bitcointalk alias is https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=334325 - FitnessRegiment

Address I sent to: 1CiG8y2SxhmKbMLqvi5TvVEvkdccsCJ5nB

55  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Always back up your wallets - a lesson I learned the hard way on: June 12, 2014, 04:59:10 AM
If you haven't formatted the drive there is a chance that some of the data has not been deleted and hence is recoverable. Have you tried to recover the files yet? Depending on how much you lost, you could consider sending it to a professional data recovery service (but only if your wallet has been encrypted) which would set you back quite a bit but would be worth it if you had a lot.

Even if her wallet wasn't encrypted, it would make sense to send it to a data recovery service. If anyone was to transfer the bitcoins away to a different address (i.e. a rogue employee at the data recovery company) it would be obvious from the blockchain and they could go after them legally.

Thanks everyone! Smiley

Just posting my BTC wallet address to make sure my account is recoverable in case it is ever hijacked. Advise anyone else who hasn't posted a wallet address that they own yet to do so to protect their account.

18BEi5vPrPPYETiQt5eG9Sjjyt9DHorfYq
Good idea. Here's my address: 1H5a4QBemypd6SBQjKnK76dw4KbmoLicz9

How does posting your address help recover your account in case it is hijacked?

Good question. So the way it works is that if your account was to be hijacked, you would be able to sign a message from your Bitcoin wallet and send that to the board's admins, using the address that you've posted here to prove that you do own that address. Once an admin sees that you do actually own that address, it is obvious that you also own the account and you will be able to get your account back.

The reason we are posting it is because even if the account hijacker was to try to edit/delete the post, the admins still can see the original post that was made and will be able to verify it.
59  Economy / Services / Re: How much do you reckon accounts here are worth? on: June 11, 2014, 10:42:48 PM
Full Members tend to go for around 0.1-0.2, Snrs for around 0.3-0.6, and Heroes for around 0.7-1btc, but more and more people seem to be selling accounts these days so prices might be a little lower.

Weird how low they are going for. It's almost like you'd profit by buying a hero account and signing up for campaigns, you'd ROI in at least one month.

exactly, it is weird how low they are going for. if you would buy a hero account and do all these campaigns you would get that money back easily.

I wouldn't like seeing a bunch of Hero and Senior members who are really newbies spamming the board. It kinda defeats the purpose of the titles.

That is true, but seeing as selling accounts is apparently allowed, this is bound to happen. I hope that at least no one will fall for any big scams from bought hero member accounts.

People just need to use escrow, each and every time. The trust ratings here are useless.
