If you're not sure about something, don't state it authoritatively!

I know we all make mistakes but I have seen so many instances on this site and especially in this sub-forum where people are giving completely incorrect advice or answers to people with questions.

People, please, if you are not 100% sure about something, please state this when you give advice, or ask the OP to check with someone else as well. Don't state your opinion as 100% fact or give an authoritative answer if you yourself don't know what you're talking about.

Everyone else, if you see someone giving the wrong answer, quote them and correct them so that others reading the thread can see that this is incorrect information. We need to keep the signal to noise ratio as high as possible and try to make sure that correct answers are being given as much as possible.

Also, PLEASE READ THE ACTUAL QUESTION. Half the time OP will ask one thing and will receive answers to 20 different questions he didn't ask. People skim over OP's post for half a second, think they know what the question is and leave an answer that has nothing to do with the actual question.

Yeah, this is annoying and a sizable proportion of people simply like to "know" and think they are almost certainly or certainly right, based on some very light information. Away from keyboard, I have cut this down to a minimum because at some point I made a nasty habit of being "sure". It was a difficult habit to drop, it made me a lot more quiet in usual conversations... but also made me read and learn more.

I remember back in my sys admin days.. One of my my new main Voip servers HDDs were running very slow... so googled it for ages..
found something about hdparm.. I new I had to be cautious with that command as it can end very badly... so found some post saying to use
hdparm blah blah... did it... killed the hdd.. totally.. then I read the next post in the thread and it said 'do not do what the previous posted said, it is incorrect and will kill hdd' and yeah.... eventually found the correct hdparm and speed up the hdd heeaaps.. this was like 12 yrs ago though..

hoping linux does not need hdparm these days to speed up the hdds.. assuming it kinda does it by default... i hope..either way not a sys admin anymore so dont realy care

I agree with this member. Plus, they're a Staff and Hero member, and they're always correct. Plus, we should worship them. all the time.
