41  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Which brand of miner should I trust? on: January 14, 2023, 04:18:11 AM
Whatsminer M20 and M30 series is very reliable.
Antminer S19 and S9 are quite reliable but stay away from S17 series.
42  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2023 Diff thread now opened. on: January 13, 2023, 04:28:56 AM
Price bump brings in more hash.
Probably going to end up with a double digit difficulty rise.
This is why we can't have nice things Smiley

One advice I would give Canaan is to be more conservative in your hashrate claims.
All our Canaan machines have about 10% lower hashrate than advertised.
44  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S17 Pro vs. S17+ on: January 04, 2023, 05:14:57 PM
S17 series is super unreliable, but I have a slight preference for S17 Pro over S17+ .
Got with a S19 or XP, if you can afford it.

Have you provided external power to this 7 port hub? That would be in addition to the USB connection.
46  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain on: December 28, 2022, 05:56:19 PM
Bitmain released their new firmware for Antminer S19 series models earlier today.
I installed it on my S19 95T (with 76 chips per hashboard, purchased in early 2021). Here's the side-by-side comparison of performance between the old FW and the two modes on the new FW.

Highlights for low power mode
1. Improves efficiency by 16%, from 34 to 28.5 W/T
2. Drops hashrate by ~ 23%
3. Drops noise by 10 dB
4. Upgrade can be done via web interface
5. Fixed frequency means no autotuning downtime
6. May enable running 2 miners on a 20A circuit
7. Does not block aftermarket firmware like BraiinsOS+ etc

Got it guys, my apologies!
I'll lock this one and hopefully, philipma1957 or someone else can start a new one.

I don't get this kind of thing, Texas is full of gas and oil and relies on electricity for heating, we don't have gas and oil and we rely on gas for heating, and in Siberia, they rely mainly on central heating having entire towns not connected to the gas network.
Who planned this s***!

So, before the blast hits, after Core declared bankruptcy,  Greenidge is next in line, NYDIG will basically purchase 2/3 of their machine and give them some extra money till next year, turning them from a mining farm to almost a hosting company and they will probably get suspended from NASDAQ too as they shares have gone well beyond $1 to 25 cents, from $18 a year ago.

Quote
Under the deal, which is currently in the form of a non-binding term sheet, NYDIG will purchase 2.8 exahash per second (EH/s) worth of Greenidge's bitcoin mining machines, and extinguish $57 million to $68 million of the debt. That will leave Greenidge with 1.2 EH/s of machines, and the miner will also pledge the rest of its unencumbered assets to secure the rest of the loan, which will be somewhere between $6 million to $17 million.

And mentioning Core, how nice of them, even being bankrupt they still plan to help:

I think the bigger problem with ERCOT is that as an ISO, it is isolated from other grid interconnections.

❄❄🎄🎄⛄⛄🎅🎅
Season's Greetings!
Starting a new 2023 difficulty thread, since the next adjustment will be in the first week of 2023.
Looks like this week's winterstorm, has triggered curtailment with public miners.

Bitmain released their new firmware for S19J Pro models earlier today.
I installed it on my S19J Pro 104T (has beaglebone board). Here's the side by side comparison of performance between the old FW and the two modes on new FW.

Standard power mode on new FW seems identical to old firmware.
The low power mode does reach the 25.5 W/Th that bitmain promised but lowers hashrate by about 20%.
It runs at fixed frequency,  there's no additional autotuning downtime. The miner boots right up and starts hashing.
Since the miner only pull about 8.7 amps on low power mode, people might be able to squeeze two miners on 20A circuits (I know it breaks the 80% rule, but also know that some people will still do it)
I also ran this test with AMLOGIC control board on the same miner and got identical results for all 3 columns.
If you have a AMLOGIC board on the miner, you don't need to replace it to be able to underclock now.

This new firmware isn't as customizable as Vnish or Braiins, but happy to see Bitmain provide additional options to miners.

Really nice data, thank you.

Do you have any data on dB before and after LPM? Seeing as the fans RPM go down significantly I'm wondering how much change in noise.

I did some sound measurements on S19J Pro 104T. These are measured on a smartphone, placed 3 ft away from the miner exhaust fan.
New Firmware Standard power mode - Avg Fan speed: 4800 rpm, 66 decibels
New Firmware Low Power mode - Avg Fan speed: 3750 rpm, 58 decibels

I wonder if this upgrade will block running other fw again... Someone did 20.9 J/T with Braiins OS+.

I put all the user-submitted BraiinsOS+ performance data on a chart.
This data is from bos_x19_reports.txt file that has been floating around in BraiinsOS Telegram.

Bitmain low power mode isn't any better than Braiins' efficiency performance for similar hash rates.
Still important for folks who don't want to tinker with aftermarket firmware.

I can confirm that this new firmware from Bitmain does not block BraiinsOS.
When I insert BraiinsOS+ SD card, the miner boot into BraiinsOS even with the new Bitmain firmware on the control board.
I tested this for both Beaglebone and Xilinx boards.

ERCOT is expected to see a sharp spike in electricity demand which might mean the miners have to curtail use?
I'll take the difficulty drop. Cool

55  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain on: December 20, 2022, 04:12:06 AM
The standard power version on the new fw has a very small efficiency improvement over old fw.
111 Th at 3260 Watts (compared to 111Th at 3368 Watts on old fw) . Chip temps on new fw are a little bit cooler which might explain the 100watts power draw reduction compared to old fw.
New FW seems to be working the fans harder to keep the chips cooler.
Bitmain probably realized that there's a significant efficiency gain to be had from lower chip temps and implemented it in this version.
56  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain on: December 20, 2022, 02:45:32 AM
Temps dropped by a degree or two, but fan rpm dropped from ~3800 rpm to ~2800 rpm with new low-power firmware.
My wattage measurements are at the PDU, so quite accurate.

I did some rough calculations and the new low power mode is more profitable for power rate >$0.06/kwh
57  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Better efficiency coming to your S19 from Bitmain on: December 19, 2022, 04:02:05 PM
The new firmware for S19 Pro has been released on bitmain's support website .
I installed it on one of our S19 Pro 110T miners. The new firmware has a low power mode and here are the results when compared with the old firmware.

So it does deliver the promised efficiency of 25.5 W/Th but drops the hashrate to about 90 Th.

58  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [Awesome Miner] - Powerful Windows GUI to manage and monitor up to 200000 miners on: December 19, 2022, 02:26:23 AM
Hi @Patrike,

Long time Awesome miner user here, love the product.
I noticed that the bar at the bottom of the GUI hasn't updated in a bit.

It still lists ETH that's no longer minable and other coins like bitcoin diamond, bitcoin gold etc that are probably not really being mined.
Would request a re-evaluation of this bar, the removal of coins that are maybe less than $100 million in market cap and the addition of coins like BSV, Ecash etc that are more relevant for miners these days.
59  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Bitcoin's Future: What Happens When the Block Reward is Lower Than Fees? on: December 19, 2022, 02:13:26 AM
My take is a bit controversial in some circles, but I'd post it here because I really believe in it.
Satoshi probably intended the block reward as a temporary subsidy to bootstrap the network and pay the miners until there was enough economic activity that miners have sufficient compensation from transaction fees.
So, shrinking block rewards isn't a problem, even if BTC prices don't rise much from here. Just my 2 cents.
