41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining rig crashes, any suggestions? on: September 11, 2013, 11:43:08 AM
Thank you for the response!

How exactly would I go about disabling the cards through the cgminer command? I had someone else set up everything for me, and I don't want to mess anything up. My rig is not actually at my house, but I am able to connect to it via Teamviewer. Would I just go through and delete all of the values for one card at a time, and so forth until all three are checked out?

Thanks again!

Are you using a config file or command line?
42  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGWatcher 1.3.1, the GUI/monitor for CGMiner and BFGMiner to prevent downtime on: September 10, 2013, 07:37:21 PM
Did you move or copy the CGWatcher folder? recently Check the ProfilesDataPath setting in CGWatcher.exe.ini, this points to your profiles.dat file which stores profiles. (Same with VariablesDataPath, which points to variables.ini where variables are stored.)

In the last version, I had mistakenly had it save the path even if it was the default location, so if you moved or copied the folder somewhere else it would continue to point to the old path unless you manually updated it. This is corrected in 1.3.1, but you may need to correct it initially. Alternatively, you can delete the CGWatcher.exe.ini file to have it re-create a new one upon starting, but you'll have to re-set some settings.

I am still running 1.2.8.1.
43  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Mining rig crashes, any suggestions? on: September 10, 2013, 06:40:03 PM
If it were me, I would do either one of two things (depending on how lazy I was feeling at the time).  Either:

1) Pull out two of the cards and test just one.  If it runs, put the next one in.  If all of them run, then try running two cards, and then finally all 3 again.

2) If I am too lazy to do that, go through and disable the other cards in your command line arguments (assuming you are using cgminer or bfgminer). Again, start by running each card separately, then two cards, then all three again.

It may also be a hardware issue (HDD failure, board going bad, PSU, RAM).  Only way to find out what it is to first verify your software settings are correct (which they sound like they are if you havent changed anything), then start diagnosing each on component individually.  If all that seems to check out, maybe try a fresh OS install.

I keep having an pop up whenever CGWatcher restarts my miner.  It tells me that my miner that is running is not currently using a profile.  Would I like to create one?  Thing is, I have one created, and it is using it.

I would actually use the link above and download the legacy 11.12 drivers.  Those work best for 5xxx series cards.
46  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What happens when there is a big difficulty drop? on: September 09, 2013, 05:16:31 PM

With this exponential growth in difficulty lately I was wondering:  Because the difficulty is adjusted each 2016 blocks and not some other measure of time, if there were a substantial decrease in network capacity wouldn't the blockchain get "stuck"?  For example,  say things keeps growing nicely and then the next reward split rolls around and half the miners decide to shut down their operations overnight because it's not profitable.  It might go from 10 minutes to find a new block to 2 hours or more.  Then it could take 168 days to reach 2016 blocks and have the difficulty readjust.

Is this a real danger, or an I missing something in the specification?

Thanks,

-Jay

Essentially that is a probability.  We have seen this with alt coins already.  Someone jumps on with a huge hash rate, jacks up the difficulty as they mine away block after block, then stops mining.  The difficulty would adjust back down, but it has to find the blocks first, and with it so high, and not enough miners out there with enough hash power (and just pure luck) the difficulty never comes back down because no one is finding blocks to get help it get to the next difficulty adjustment.

However, I dont think anyone sees this happening with BTC just yet.  What you might see is that there are less and less miners, and more and more mining companies in which you would buy shares in.
47  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [Bounty .05BTC] Little Single BFL ASic miner. Not getting crap for coins on: September 09, 2013, 01:57:26 PM
I'm sure you have been testing different pools.

Also I just realized, with a little single running at 30 ghs you should be making 0.17355231 per 24 hours and not .23, how did you come up with that number?

Eclipse said I was running at 40gh/s

Thats just an estimate depending on how many shares you submit in a certain time period. I have had my 10Gh show as much as 24 before because my miner was working, but the reporting was behind.  When it finally caught up and calculated how many shares I submitted it thought I was cranking more than I actually was.  Look at your miner and the hash rate its putting out for a better accruate measure of what your rate is.
48  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: solo memecoin mining on: September 09, 2013, 11:52:00 AM
Look a little further below and it will go over solo mining and how to run it with guiminer.  I'm shooting for a lower difficulty coin instead of litecoin in which he says to avoid solo mining.

I've added the .conf file to the proper location, I've specified the qt client and the data directory but gui miner keeps telling me "No servers could be used."  I think the one portion I don't understand is where they are getting an rpc login/password.  Can this be any login/password or do I have to make an account some where similar to a pool worker?

Thanks

Is the coin you are trying to mine scrypt?  And if so, do you have the right version of guiminer?  The old version didnt do scrypt.  There was an "updated" version that someone hacked together to allow it to do scrypt.

As for the rpc login and password, I think that can be anything.  It is the login and password that your miner app would use to log into.  You point your miner (in this case, guiminer) to your local host system.  Its running the QT client which turns your system into a "pool" essentially, and then the address in that config file tell it where to connect to on the network to begin mining.

Update:

I'm going to split the reward among everybody. I'll pay the transaction fees. It won't be much since the .05 (maybe .08) bitcoins are gonna be spread. I'm doing this because it's not fair to leave people out. Leave your bitcoin address if you can haz donatez!

Any way to increase my performance on pps with my current bfgminer script?! What more can I do to get the most efficient amount of bitcoin is the question. I run my little single bfl miner 24/7 if that helps

I dont believe so.  You arent using any GPU's thus nothing to overclock. I havent seen anything out there about how to flash the firmware on single yet (unlike flashing a Jalapeno) so pretty much they are what they are.  90% of the stuff in your config file can be deleted as they are for controlling GPUs and have no affect on your single.

Socks 4 currently.
Ok, I've coded up socks4 support as well now.

Again, thanks!  Very much appreciated.

I've restarted many times to get this working, So what your saying is to reinstall the VCP C210 drivers then WinUSB? This all started when one of my AMU's stopped spitting out accepts in BFGminer, I noticed it kept assigning that one AMU to COM3 no matter what and that I had like 50 com ports assigned., but I've only got 7 BE's plugged in at once..Ugh. Windows can be such a pain at times. Like I said, I'd just love to just wipe all the Com ports/drivers out clean and start anew.

When you use zadig, you have to change the driver for all of the devices, not just one, if you have them all plugged in.  The trick I believe around this is to unplug all of them instead of one, use zadig to change the driver, and then when you plug in the rest of the devices they will automatically attached to the winusb and thus cgminer will see them.

How do you install ASIC into a computer? USB? PCI Express?
To date all rigs have either been standalone (the rig has ethernet and you just connect it to a network) or use USB to connect TO a computer (host).  None have been installed inside a computer.

Quote
How does power usage of ASIC compare to GPU mining?
It is not even close.  Depending on the ASIC model, a GPU uses about 50x to 500x as much power.

A 2.5W USB Block Eruptor outhashes many 200W+ graphics cards.

Does anybody still use GPU's for mining BTC?
No.  Well maybe if they already own GPUs and they have free power but even then it is getting close to the point it isn't worth it.

LTC gets 4x as much in USD value as BTC mining, just mine it and convert, even that's getting close when you pay for power. Anyone still GPU mining BTC is either daft and using free power, or daft and loosing money.

Daft it is then!

I was more asking how you get to the config file and use it for other devices. It says its in a hidden folder but in windows I have all hidden folders to be set to be seen. I want to when I get more devices transplant them into something like a raspberry pi .

I seem to remember that it used to do this, but its been some time since I used a config file. In the past I would just have the same config file and I would just copy and past to systems as I needed.  All you need to do is make sure it is formatted correctly, save it in the same folder as cgminer.exe and make sure the extension is .conf.  Then when you create your shortcut or .bat file, you need to tell it to use the .conf file in your argument.
54  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: do i have to download all blocks to start using my bitcoin on: September 07, 2013, 11:25:51 PM
Any full wallet really.
But Bitcoin is really the slowest one to sync from the start as it has a lot of transactions and is the oldest.

True, just use a blockchain.info wallet, no need for download of the block chain.

but the online wallet not 100% safe.

Its not 100% safe but its pretty secure and hasnt had any real problems.  Do not use an exchange to hold your coins, ever.

I use blockchain.info as my online wallet.  I have a Yubi Key as a 2-factor authenticator so its pretty safe.
even if it is safe from hackers, its not safe from the company running blockchain to go bankrupt and close the website

True.  The only safe wallet is your own personal wallet that you have the keys too, and that system that holds the keys is not connected to the internet at all.

56  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Possible uses for Heat Generated by btc mining? on: September 07, 2013, 10:53:18 PM
I have a unit with dual watercoold VGAs that sits under my desk.  The heat it gives off through the top vented radiator is nice when its cold out.  When its hot, I just keep a small fan under there.

I just moved all my USB miners to a win7 PC with 3.4.2.  It's working flawlessly.  I'm not running as admin, and not using "-enable-icarus".  No parms at all aside from pointing to config file, that has nothing in it but pool addresses.

M

What page do I look into to make and use a config file. I have no idea why you would not need and I do need admin, but since I have a build version all that should be recognized without the icaris options?

I just know it works with the options in the string on admin mode for cgminer.

Not quite sure what you are asking. If you are using Windows, the Windows downloads from ckolivas git already come configured I believe to recognize USB devices, as well as scrypt mining, there shouldnt be anything more you need to do but to make sure your command line has the correct arguments.

I tried to get my ASICMiner BEs to work with zadigs USB driver and cgminer 3.4.2. BEs are listed as USB devices in win7 device manager correctly.

"cgminer-nogpu.exe -o eu-stratum.btcguild.com:3333 -u xxxxx -p xxxxx --enable-icarus"
DOS windows shows up for a second. Without --enable-icarus cgminer starts but no devices found.

any ideas?

Are you running as an admin when you load? That one of the things I forgot to do. Check the properties for your shortcut if your using one and make sure the "run as admin" is checked off.

--enable-icarus is only for compiling cgminer, it is not a command line argument.

60  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: BFGMiner and Block USB Erupter Problem help needed "User privileges...COM1" on: September 06, 2013, 08:15:26 PM
I tried it both ways. It doesn't make a difference. QED.

You said in you OP that it says you do not have privileges to run this.  Have you tried right clicking and running the shortcut as an administrator?

The problem isn't user privileges.

bfgminer was originally written for posix-compliant operating systems that consider all devices to be files where you can set access to them by user permissions.

Windows doesn't have the capability to limit access to USB devices by user privileges.

User privileges are only available at the filesystem level, and since Windows doesn't consider non-storage devices to be filesystem components it's not possible to restrict permission to them.

This is not the same as the privileges required to install drivers for a device. You must have administrative privileges to install a device driver. Windows assumes that if you  have administrative privileges to install the driver you should be allowed to access the device even without elevated privileges.

Because of this the application doesn't know the difference between being blocked from accessing the device by the OS because of user privileges and the device not responding due to any of the issues I listed in my original post.

It only checks if the hardware is responding. If it doesn't accept commands the application assumes it's because of privileges and displays the reported error.

That said, the most likely cause of this error is that the device was detected by Windows when it was plugged in because your hub provides enough power for the USB interface, but the device can't be accessed because the hub cannot provide enough consistent power to operate the FPGA.

I was able to determine this was a problem by testing with both USB2.0 powered hubs and USB3.0 powered hubs.

Try replacing your hub with a USB3.0 hub. The worst case scenario is that you send the hub back to Amazon with free shipping because it didn't fix the problem. On the other hand, if it does fix your problem you've only lost the cost or opportunity.

Good info to know.  So it seems like his solution is to back out the amount of BE's he has plugged into the hub as they are exceeding its power.

I don't recall saying that.

What I said was:

Try replacing your hub with a USB3.0 hub. The worst case scenario is that you send the hub back to Amazon with free shipping because it didn't fix the problem. On the other hand, if it does fix your problem you've only lost the cost or opportunity.

Even with one Block Erupter plugged in it's possible that if the hub can't provide adequate and consistent power for the device, even if the device were to operate, you might encounter lots of hardware errors that would significantly reduce your efficiency.

Block Erupters are already very low return mining devices. Even under ideal operating conditions I have seen that they return about 1.4% errors. Reducing the efficiency even further would just be shooting yourself in the proverbial foot.

Okay, well I was implying that he could try that, instead of sending his hub back, even if its down to only one.  If it is a power per port issue, then the easiest way he can find out if he has everything configured to work is if he can get at least 1 up and mining.  If he cannot, then all he would be doing by sending back his hub is wasting his time and becoming more frustrated.

Here is a good source for tested hubs and how many BE's they can run
