41  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: poclbm autostart on Ubuntu 10.10? (30 BTC) on: April 20, 2011, 06:52:04 AM

Fanspeed, no: resets after each X restart to auto.  Clock, yes:
Code:
aticonfig --odcc --adapter=all

I type that in and it says "Clocks persisted for Adapter 0 - ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series."  When I reboot, the clocks are the same.  What am I missing?

BTW, you're the man, Raulo.
42  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: poclbm autostart on Ubuntu 10.10? (30 BTC) on: April 20, 2011, 06:39:10 AM
Cheesy I figured it out  Cheesy
Now I will share my knowledge for all future generations.

First set a user to auto log in.
System->Administration->Login screen

Next, make a simple shell script. It needs to be something that will work under the terminal.  Example:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
cd /home/zamicol/Bitcoin/poclbm
python poclbm.py -u ******** --pass=********** -o ************* -p 8332 -d 1 -v -w 128

You can make this using a text editor like gedit.  Save it with the .sh extension.  Example: "myBitcoinMiner.sh"

Make your script executable.  (Right click->Properties->Permissions->Execute).  You should now be able to double click your script and have it run under terminal to verify that your script works.

Now to have it start up automatically upon login.  Go to System->Preferences->Startup Application.  On the screen that appears, click "Add"

Name it whatever you want.  Under the command, type "gnome-terminal -x /home/zamicol/Bitcoin/myBitcoinMiner.sh" and replace that latter part with the path to to script that you made.  The -x will put your command in a new terminal window upon startup.

You should have a system now that will start up and start mining without any further input from you  Grin  Good luck!

And in case anyone ever feels generous, my address is below.

43  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5870 running at 378 mHash/sec! on: April 20, 2011, 02:22:12 AM
No, and I wish I knew how you did that.  Whenever I underclock my 5870's any lower than 900 it affects the hashrates. I get about 350,000 running @ 940 @ ~70 degrees C.

I'm running Ubuntu, and I have Gigabyte 5870's.

And thanks for mentioning AMDOverdriveCtrl.  That so much better than what I was using before!
44  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Daul 5870's Ubuntu 2nd GPU on: April 20, 2011, 12:51:12 AM
Have you tried plugging another monitor into the second card?  You may need to get a DVI->VGA Dummy Plug (search for VGA Dummy Plug for a guide on how to make one) to plug into the second card.

Linux doesn't need the dummy plug.

Sounds like he forgot to do the aticonfig --initial --adapter=all to add the card to the xorg.conf file after plugging in the new card as the previous poster stated.

Nope, I definitely did that step... a few times.  Once I couldn't get it to recognize, I rebooted and ran through all the steps a few times to make sure that I didn't forget anything, and I know that aticonfig --initial --adapter=all is crucial.

But as I said, I put that card in a second machine and it will be a day or two until I have a second card in that machine again.  I'll update then.  Hopefully the problem will just disappear.  Thanks for the help.

P.S.- When adding a second card, Ubuntu wont display anything graphically.  My solution has been to enter low graphics mode, follow Humble's tutorial up to aticonfig --initial --adapter=all, and reboot.  Those 5870's run really hot until the drivers are working properly though, and I know that can't be a good thing.
45  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: poclbm autostart on Ubuntu 10.10? (30 BTC) on: April 20, 2011, 12:43:18 AM

Code:
export DISPLAY=:0
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/sdk:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
pocmldir/poclbm.py --parametes

Put the script is some file and  run it from /etc/rc.local

I'm a noob to scripting so I don't understand all of this.  I want to be able to press the power button on a machine with no other peripherals (monitor/keyboard) and have it start up and start mining.  I have my machine auto-log in, so I don't think I need to worry about the SDK configuration, but I don't quite understand how to get poclbm autostarting:

-"Put the script is some file"  Huh?
-"and  run it from /etc/rc.local" Huh again?

I'm also using the Ati over clock utility that uses QT, is there any way to set the default gpu/mem speeds?

Thanks!

I ended up putting the video card in a second machine, but I have another 5870 on the way.  When it gets here I'll give you an update.  Thanks for the help.   Smiley
47  Bitcoin / Mining / Daul 5870's Ubuntu 2nd GPU on: April 19, 2011, 10:16:20 AM
Hi guys, I just got a second card, but I cant seem to get it working.

I followed Humble's tutorial http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3356.msg47489#msg47489

Then I continued with Raulo for m0mchil poclbm  http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3359.msg47174#msg47174

I can get my first GPU to mine, but not the second.  When I try "export DISPLAY=:0" It only sees my processor and the first GPU.

This might have already been asked before, I tried searching, but I couldn't find a solution so far.

Thanks!

And by the way, 5870's @ 370 Mhash/s?  Did you kill something to achieve this?

This doesn't require voodoo.
My first thought
 Cheesy

Cheesy This is the funniest thing I have seen on these forums.
49  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Profitability of Mining + Excel Workbook on: April 13, 2011, 07:25:13 AM
Funny, you sound just like me!  I completed a spreadsheet over he weekend and I just finished ordering some parts for a new machine, but It's going to be used for work/play too, so I spent a little more.  My number are a little screwy, I made them to factor in parts that I already had depending on hardware demands.  I'm shooting for dual or triple 5870's.

When I did my calculations, my payback was more conservatively at 90 days.  This is anticipating a very small increase in difficulty and not over clocking the cards as you were.  I didn't factor in electricity.

I have a few comments as well.
That case is ugly and it cost ~$20 for shipping.  May I suggest http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147023? It's 10 bucks less, looks like it might have better airflow, and free shipping!

And 5970's at even $450 I havn't seen for a while on Ebay.  It's all you darn mining folk. Smiley

And by the way, 5870's @ 370 Mhash/s?  Did you kill something to achieve this?

I seriously almost bought that Mobo.  I ended up buying this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131647&cm_re=ASUS_M4A87TD_EVO-_-13-131-647-_-Product

I bought a little nicer case, it was on sale and I have wated to get a decent one for a few years now.  A great excuse  Grin http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119196

Good luck.
50  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Underclock mem speed on HD 5970 linux? on: April 11, 2011, 09:27:34 AM
I found a solution using "ATI Overclocking Utility" referenced here: http://www.overclock.net/software-news/514993-phoronix-ati-overclocking-utility-linux-2.html#post6338431

There should be instructions on that page for installing it.  On ubuntu I also had to "sudo apt-get install libqt4-network" in order to get the util to run.

This utility appears to change whatever values aticonfig is using for bounds so once you lower the memory speeds in the utility it will expand the range available to aticonfig.  I could clock my 5870 as low as 160Mhz, however anything under 900Mhz or so seemed to affect hash speed (~340MH/s @ 900Mhz, ~290MH/s @ 300Mhz using poclbm).

I have an 5870 as well, but when I use this utility on my Ubuntu machine, it seems to result in more "invalid or stale " shares.

I'm thinking about getting my windows machine working so I can see if there is any difference.
51  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Second slot at x8 or even x4? on: April 09, 2011, 09:04:03 PM
second poster is definitely right..bitcoin mining is NOT bandwidth (PCI express bandwidth) intensive so it doesn't really matter how many PCIE lanes you have.
Does it mean no penalty at all even on fastest cards @x1? Say, 5970 @ x1?
Perfectly fine. Some people use flexible PCIe x1 extenders to install 4 cards in one MB.
x1 is even more than enough.

So would something like this work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/StarTech-com-PCIe-X1-X16-Slot-Extension-Ad-PEX1TO16R-/300545732681?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f9ebf049#ht_1204wt_1141

I'm thinking about upgrading my mother board, but it is always nice to look at all the other options.  Smiley

Hey guys!

All day Earning have been showing this:

Unconfirmed:     N/A

So I have no idea how much I have earned.  I notice that I can't find any other account that does.  Is there a problem with the service?

I switched to Slush's for the moment; at least until I know that my earnings aren't flying away.
53  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying mtgox USD for Paypal on: April 06, 2011, 11:07:30 PM
Let me see if I understand this, you just gave Mndrix money through PP so you could receive USD credit to your account on Mt Gox?  How does that work?

I will be giving Mndrix an email. Mt Gox's 7% PP fee is outrageous Sad.  I would have moved some funds over earlier but I was looking for a cheaper/faster/digital way to do it.
54  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BitcoinPool.com open thread on: April 05, 2011, 12:55:43 AM
Freak'n amazing.  python poclbm-mod.py ... works!  I knew it had to be something simple. I'm only on a 4830 so it might take a day or two before I see any real payout Smiley
55  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BitcoinPool.com open thread on: April 04, 2011, 11:58:37 PM
I'm having a hard time with the poclbm-mod.zip.  I'm on a Linux box (Ubuntu).

Diablo and poclbm work great, but poclbm-mod.py does not work.

Code:
./poclbm-mod.py  -u ****** --pass=********** -o bitcoinpool.com -p 8334 -d 1
bash: ./poclbm-mod.py: /usr/bin/python^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

Anyone know why?  From what I read on line there is a mix up with the windows endings and the *nix endings, but I thought this file was suppose to work with Linux.  As I said, poclbm.py works fine.  I'm running it right now.
56  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best Cost-to-Mh/s Ratio Card? on: March 31, 2011, 07:37:49 AM
Hey Guys!  I've known about BitCoins for a while now (and I LOVE the idea), but tonight I discovered this whole GPU mining world. I am interested in buying a machine and getting started.  I would be willing to put about $800ish in a machine.

I'm looking to get the biggest bang for my buck.  I don't know what that is, so here I am, reading up. Smiley

I was wondering, wouldn't it be best to buy two 5870 @ 340 Mhash/s @ $200 instead of one 5970 @ 600 Mhash/s @ $500?  Why are so many people recommending the 5970's over the 5870's?

What would be the best cost-to-Mh/s ratio overall without freeqaz $100 limit?

Thanks, and you'll be seeing more of me!
