41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Cyprus/Bitcoin connection is totally fake on: April 02, 2013, 02:26:58 PM
Downloads of the Bitcoin client is a very poor metric.

I would guess that most people will only create an account on mt.gox, because they have no idea how the system works. They will just keep there money there.

Even if they don't, they are likely to use a web client like blockchain.info, rather than the full-blown bitcoin client.
42  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Offline Transaction & Change Address on: April 01, 2013, 01:35:50 AM
Hello once more.

I guess you can close the topic.

Here was the issue:

The offline back-up of the wallet is kept in an encrypted container and I didn't back-up the new version of the wallet after signing the transaction. When I loaded the wallet again from the back-up, of course the change address wasn't there yet.

The online version of the wallet had the change address in it, as expected, in read-only form. I remembered that Armory addresses are deterministic, so I just clicked "Receive Bitcoins" on the offline client to create a new address, and sure enough, it was the same one as the change address on the online client.

Problem solved. Note to self: back the new version of the offline wallet up after signing transactions to avoid confusion.
43  Bitcoin / Armory / Offline Transaction & Change Address on: April 01, 2013, 01:27:52 AM
Hello.

I've started using Armory recently and ran into a big question, to which I hope you can give me an answer that will not make me want to shoot myself.

I did an offline transaction with Armory, which worked just fine. I created the transaction on the online client, signed it on the offline client and broadcasted it on the online client. I used an amount that was present exactly on one address, assuming that Armory would use that input, as it wouldn't require a change address.

Instead, Armory used the first address with BTC in the list, which had more BTC present than the transaction volume. A certain sum was transferred to a change address. My question now is: how do I get access to this change address?

The transaction gets broadcasted on the online client, which has a read-only copy of the wallet, so obviously, I won't be able to access the change address there. However, my offline client does not contain the change address, either.

Where is the private key for the change address? How is this supposed to work with the entire offline transaction logic?

Dude. Thought you would like to know that the picture from your account is going viral *big* time.

A friend of mine who has no clue what Bitcoin or this forum is just posted it on Facebook. I was like "WTF?".

If you wanted attention, you sure as hell have it now. Make the best of it.

Well, everyone who paid attention in math class knows where this is going...
47  Economy / Speculation / Re: Things are happening behind closed doors, very important for Bitcoin things. on: March 22, 2013, 12:43:45 PM
Actually, russia money supply is around 11T RUB, which would put the current bitcoin at around 1 000 000 RUB, that is around 32 000 $.
To put it another way, 140M people in russia, there are not enough bitcoins to give each russian 0.1 BTC.

Or to give each Russian 10000000 satoshis.
48  Economy / Speculation / Re: Thinking about buying? on: March 20, 2013, 11:39:13 PM
I would say that if you are looking for long term investment, you can buy now.

I am a bit afraid that the economical basis can't keep up completely with all the speculators that will storm into Bitcoin in the coming weeks, so there might be a crash of sorts, but if that happens, I'm quite sure it will recover in a more sustainable growth spurt afterwards.
49  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - Lightweight Bitcoin Client on: March 20, 2013, 07:58:50 PM
It's really too bad it was written in Python, I don't have the time to learn a new language at this point. I would have loved to contribute - I have so many ideas, and Electrum is exactly the kind of client I wanted.
50  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - Lightweight Bitcoin Client on: March 20, 2013, 06:13:06 PM
The 1.6.2 upgrade notification definitely works.

I have problem though.  I'm on the windows version and whenever I open my wallet I also get a separate console window.  If I close it, my wallet closes as well.

This is intended for now. Enabling that console windows makes it so Electrum can accept command line options; without that window it won't accept it and things like portable mode or opening an other wallet are not possible.
That sounds strange... I've written and used several Windows programs that accept command-line options without a console window. From where does this constraint stem? Are you calling AllocConsole()?

It is a result of PyInstaller what is currently used to build the windows packages. If you disable the console it won't accept command line arguments. If you have more experience in such methods please check out the build scripts and see if you can help us improve the windows packages.

I don't know about Python, but in C / C++ you just need to do this:

Code:
ShowWindow(GetConsoleWindow(), SW_HIDE);

Part of the WinAPI.

Pardon my French, but: fuck security. Nothing is safe, nothing is secure, enjoy the thrill and live.
53  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Confirmation time vs tx fee: Another reason to keep the blocksize where it is? on: March 11, 2013, 04:14:55 PM
This is wrong. It makes no sense to take the highest fees if you know you have no chance of getting them, since faster miners will always get there first.
I think you don't understand how mining works-- there is no such thing as a "faster" miner, just miners with more or less chance of creating the next block.

Please correct me, but doesn't it take longer to solve a given block if one has a slower computer? If so, wouldn't the transactions in the block just be older? Hence, confirmation times would scale inversely with tx fees.

wot?

55  Economy / Economics / Re: Let's see if increase in price of btc leads to less spending and more hoarding on: March 09, 2013, 08:45:08 PM
I don't think donations have a significant correlation with spending or saving behaviours.

The motivation behind donating is very different from the motivation behind spending.
I (and proponents of the "deflationary danger" theory) speak of the motivation to not spend, not to spend. The presumed disincentive to spend should also apply to donating.

No. That would still imply that the motivation of donating would only vary on the bipolar spectrum of having vs not having the money.

I believe that there is another factor when it comes to donating that has a much more prevalant influence - belief, activism, humaneness, politics, call it what you want, but it's not primarily economic in nature.

I see your point, but don't you think the two driving forces are balancing in each act?

Personally, no. But that's of course a subjective opinion. I believe for donations, the economic dimension is mostly irrelevant, so there won't be any correlation between economic growth and the number of donations - volume (as in amounts per donation) possibly more so, but still way less than normal spending.

Hello piuk.

I would really like to hear an update on the anonymous payments and the bitcoin mixer, if possible.

Why did you take it down? Do you intend do bring it back? What's the current status?

I don't really need it at the moment, but - frankly - I'm intrigued.
59  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fundamental bitcoin flaw - revisited on: March 04, 2013, 12:15:51 AM
In case some people aren't realizing the simple practice of handing off keys is not a safe way to preform bitcoin transactions. The 'sender' can reuse that money any time, a primary way would be to send it to themselves at a new address by making an actual bitcoin transaction.

We will reach $35 next week.

Mark my words. Still two days until the weekend dip.
