41  Bitcoin / Mining / Using my mining gear to heat cold rooms in my house?? on: November 06, 2013, 04:56:37 PM
So I am coming to terms with the fact that ROI may never happen on the 6 BFL Jalapenos I just got. Feel free to ridicule me as you see fit, I ordered them after major surgery and I was pumped full of pain meds and not thinking clearly.

I also have a GPU mining rig with 3 HD 7950s.

So my question is, should I just run these things to heat a few rooms in my house that are at the end of my radiator system's circulation (and as such are always a bit colder that the rest of the house)?

I know the GPU rig kicks off a bunch of heat. And I have two room s that would really benefit so I am thinking of splitting those up to heat 2 rooms.

Do the jalapenos kick of some heat too? That would oddly carry a decent amount of value to me fm now until about March.

As of right now if I sell them I maybe get 250 each which is a loss, oh well, I could just eat the loss and move on. Or I could mine a few of them even if ROI takes forever, in hopes that one day bitcoin goes thru the roof (US Bailouts lets say or something similar or just a long enough timeline where more people get hip to BTC...) and in the meantime keep my office and my daughters room warm for the winter.

Thoughts?

I found this while digging around. If anyone wants to check my math or knows more about heat output please let me know what you think.

"for BTU calculations just use the 60W number for the device x the number of devices. x 3.412142 BTU/hr per watt."

gpu rig pulls around 400 watts x 3.412142= 1360 ish BTU/hr

jalapenos at 43watts (so I've read)
 x 3.412142… should then pull 146 btus/hr

so could basically have a 1500-2000 btu heater that who knows, MAYBE, in a long long time if bitcoin prices go the the moon might make me some of my money back. The GPU rig kicked off a LOT of heat when I had it running in that room but I didn't have it running in there in cold winter months so it is hard to say if it will get the job done.  Oddly the mining gear seems to be reasonably efficient for heating (if my calculations are correct)

for comparison, the amish heater that is enough for that room (which I think is 1300ish cubic fi

1500 watts, or 5110 BTU

which I would be running anyway but it doesn't mine bitcoin!!

If they sell they sell, if not I'm going to see if they can help me keep that room warmer.
42  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help I can't get into my blockchain wallet!!! REWARD .2 BTC on: October 30, 2013, 01:53:22 AM
PROBLEM SOLVED thru blockchain helpdesk.

Thanks for the help.

I wound up restoring a backup which has my funds YAY!!!
43  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help I can't get into my blockchain wallet!!! REWARD .2 BTC on: October 29, 2013, 09:37:23 PM
Did you happen to create a backup of your wallet?  If so, the private keys can be extracted from the backup and loaded into a new wallet to give you access to the bitcoins that were in the old wallet.

Yes I did. Several actually.

I have attempted to restore them and it prompts me to input a password but blockchain will not accept my password, and a red box pops up that says "Error Decrypting Password. Please check your password is correct" (sic)

Is there a different procedure that I can follow to access the bitcoins in that wallet? How do I load the private keys into a new wallet? How do I find the private keys?
44  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Help I can't get into my blockchain wallet!!! REWARD .2 BTC on: October 29, 2013, 09:07:47 PM
I have bitcoin in a blockchain wallet which I haven't accessed for a while (since shortly after the big crash a few months back) and now when I go to log in blockchain will not accept my password, and a red box pops up that says "Error Decrypting Password. Please check your password is correct" (sic)

1- I never changed my password
2- I had yubikey two factor enabled. I have since disabled it and tried to log in with just my alias and password (and/or with my identifier and PW) and it will not let me into my wallet.

What the hell am I supposed to do?

Is is possible to see if someone cleaned me out? I know when the last transaction I processed was.

PLEEEEASE HELP!!

The support desk sent me the following response:

I am sorry to hear of these transactions that you did not initiate. You may have some type of malware on your computer that resulted in your funds being stolen, because your private information was somehow obtained. There's also the possibility that you visited a phishing site posing as blockchain.info. By design, Blockchain.info never has access to users' accounts or bitcoins. If you keep your password and private key backups secure, then your bitcoins are safe with blockchain.info. There is also no way to reverse a bitcoin transaction. In the future, to ensure your account is protected with an extra layer of security, always enable two factor authentication. I wish more could be done to get your funds back to you, but the nature of bitcoin makes it nearly impossible.

Reward of .2BTC will be paid out if you help me get back into my account (and there is enough to cover the reward left!!) * reward will be split if more than one person helps me actually regain use of my account
** reward only if I get in because of your help
45  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Will this work? (Trying to add a 4th card to asrock 970 ex4 rig) on: April 24, 2013, 01:00:40 AM
Why can't I just do this?

(I actually think I can...)

I'm running a 4x5830 Radeon setup (each of which takes 2x6 pin PCIe power connectors) off a Corsair 850 Watt PSU.  The PSU only provides four 6-pin PCIe power connectors; however, it does have a lot more 4-pin Molex power connectors, which I've plugged four of the Molex-to-PCIe adapters that came with the videocards into.  No issues there.  Note that these aren't splitters, they're just adapters, and they come with the cards, so presumably they're safe to use (otherwise Sapphire wouldn't ship 'em?).

how do I post a pic on here?  I would love to post my little baby one here, it is the first computer I have ever built!

I don't use snapfish or photo bucket, but I have an iPhone... is there a really easy way to do this?

47  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Will this work? (Trying to add a 4th card to asrock 970 ex4 rig) on: April 24, 2013, 12:12:48 AM
I would like to add a 4th card to my rig, a 7970...

Currently rig:

Graphics Cards     Gigabyte HD7950 3Gb GD5   (X3)
Processor            AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-core 260
Hard Drive          WD Blue 500 gb
Motherboard         Asrock 970 Extreme4    $99
Power                  Corsair 1000W ZX Series GLD
Ram                   Kingston 8gb (2x4)
Case                  Coolmast HAF XM MIDTWR ATX CASE

I have 2 PCI x1 slots on the 970, so I can run the 7970 into one of those with a riser card extender... but

How do I power the 7970?

all of my PCIE slots on the PSU are taken.... what are my options?

A) Daisy Chain or get a splitter of some sort  **
B) Get a separate power source?
C) Nope I'm fucked and I'd need to get a new PSU
D) Other ________

A)** something like this but longer:   will this be problematic when mining?

EDIT: It doesn't need to be longer because I can just plug cables into the end to extend it, right?

Can someone elaborate on the card humping clothes pin trick?

any specific technique to this?

I have 3 7950's in a asrock 970 extreme4  .... middle card runs around 99c and the GPU performance jumps all over the place, I tied the cables to pull them slightly apart, but I might need to try this clothespin trick.

Would LOVE to see a pic
49  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: BOUNTY 0.2 btc - Need help configuring GUIminer & Bitcoinqt for 3x 7950s on: April 23, 2013, 02:14:40 AM
Thanks for the help guys!

I have my rig up and running as I may have mentioned before, merged mining bitcoin and namecoin and pulling a steady 1480 or so without overclocking and with slightly less than ideal positioning of cards (until I get a pcie extender cable to mount my middle 7950 on the side off the frame to create more space between the cards)

I have been super busy the last few days, and with my rig working I have not really dug into trying to implement any of the strategies on here.... but when I do

I will make good on paying out tips for advice. I will be as far as possible, dividing the total bounty amongst contributers based on how much their advice helped me. I should be able to do this in the next day or two at which point I will read any links posted, try advice etc and see where it gets me.

Stuff that I am still seeking advice about:

I need a litecoin pool and a very easy one would be nice, if I can merge mine (I haven't looked into that possibility with ltc) that would be cool.

in depth info on "Extra flags"

what is the most informative source on bitcoin that goes beyond 101 basics getting started stuff? As of now it seems that it is this forum, but everyone here learned somewhere, did they all learn hands on and from each other or are their sources of analysis and theory of bitcoin that I am unaware of?

glub0x - thanks. Litecoins is what I will be going after too, but for now I went with bitcoin just to get up and running....

UPDATE-  I am mining on Bitminter and pulling a nice steady 1480 mhash/s !!!!!

*no overclocking just standard, I ordered a pcie extender cable to move my middle 7950 off the mobo and onto a different spot on my cooler master haf xm

once I move that then I will start playing around with how hard I can push my cards

PatMan- That is a great article.  I read it about a week ago and I will probably go linux/xumubuntu soon. I went windows first just because I figured it would be easier to get started. (learn how to mine first, rather than try to learn linux and learn to mine, since that makes too many variables for me if something goes wrong)

I have a copy of "Linux for dummies" and have bookmarked a few tutorials. Once I am comfortable mining, have got Litecoin going well and have my overclocking dialed in then I plan to move to xumbuntu, but one major step at a time....

glub0x- any advice on Litecoin pools?

here is my gameplan-

to start off, I want the easiest most user friendly way to get mining litecoin

then once I am comfortable I want the most profitable

I have been a Mac user for the last 10 years and have gotten back into the PC world only in the last month since becoming fascinated with Bitcoin, so please try to use plain english as technical talk will probably go over my head.

Right now GUIminer is telling me I am getting 156 khash/s        Sad

Shouldn't my HD 7950 cards get about 500 Mhash/s ?
and with three wouldn't that mean about 1500 mhash/s?

What am I doing wrong?   (It said I was getting about 500 mash/s when I first got it running about an hour ago)

My system

3x HD7950
2x 8Gb Kingston memory
asrock 970 extreme4
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-core 260 3.2GHz Processor ADX260OCK23GM

running GUIMiner with Bitcoin client as server

1)   Is there a book or any single source that explains Bitcoin IN DETAIL? Not a basics guide, not a startup guide, an IN DEPTH, detailed source that I can read to increase my comprehension?

* I have spent a decent amount of time on this forum, and read-
Bitcoin: A Peer to Peer Electronic Cash System - Satoshi
Bitcoin Step by Step- Michael Caughey

2a) are there ANY tutorials that go in depth into setting up the SETTINGS on GUIminer?
is there a GUIMiner manual? or a thread that explains how to set it up in plain english?

2b) What does CPU affinity mean? Why do I see several boxes on other people's videos, but only 2 on mine?

2c) Is there a setting on GUIMiner that I need to adjust to have all of my cards mining?

2d) Under the device dropdown menu I get the following choices, what do they mean?

    [0-0] Tahiti
    [0-1] Tahiti
    [0-2] Tahiti
    [0-3] AMD Anthion(tm) II x2 260

2e) Should I create a "new miner"?  and should it be OpenCL, CG, CUDA?

2f) When I set Bitcoin client path, that just means select the Bitcoin program on my computer, right?

2g) Do I need to Set a Bitcoin Data Directory?

2h) Anything else I should know about GUIMiner or any adjustments I should make?

3) What are "Extra flags"?

are they just commands that adjust aspects of performance?

The link below made more sense than most things I have read, but it is still not clear to me.

http://bitbash.blogspot.com/2011/04/extra-flags-for-bitcoin-mining.html

3b) is there a more comprehensive source for info on extra flags?

4)xxxxx I figured this out

5) xxxxx I figured this out

5b) is there an application (better and more detailed than info I get from afterburner and from bitminter)   I can download that will tell me exactly how my system is performing? what hash rate my cards are producing? overclocking information? other valuable performance info I may have left out?

6) I want to learn more about overclocking before I attempt it. Where should I start?

6a) find the safe ranges of settings and temperatures, don't go outside of that, right?

6b) your opinion- is it worth going extra hard because I have replacement warranties on these things?
(It is a replacement or refund at the store, I have returned goods there and they are not strict on returns there is always a line and I could intentionally go when there is a line and they won't have time to check)

if there is a thread or threads that cover this in plain english, please post the links and I will be happy to read, I apologize if this has been covered
54  Bitcoin / Mining support / Need resources educate myself about Mining & more in depth Bitcoin analysis on: April 20, 2013, 04:10:51 PM
Hi - I am reasonably new, but able to dedicate several hours a day to reading and research.  I have tried my best to learn from the "usual suspect" resources, Bitcoin Wiki, much much time on this forum, 2 kindle books: Bitcoin :Step By Step and Bitcoin a Peer to Peer Electronic Cash System, a few you tube videos

Here are the things that I would really like to increase my knowledge about:

1)Mining- not just the surface "how to"  I have read quite a lot of that, but it all seems to rely on some base knowledge that I do not possess (I am not a gamer, have been a MAC user, not a programmer etc)
1a-  I am having issues getting guiminer or cgminer to install and actually open on my PC.  Every time I run the install application, it gets to the point where it asks to replace files, I click yes to all, it goes for another second and them closes. No program appears in my applications folder.
(I will post in appropriate mining support forum with specific questions when I have a little time today)

any good resources that go in depth about installing mining software and doing the steps to prepare to start mining?

1b- How to get the best performance out of my rig

3x HD 7950
asrock 970 extreme4
sempon processor
kingston 8gb ramm
windows 7

as well as a few specific questions. (forgive me if they have been answered, I have read a lot of threads and haven't come across the answers or if I did, can't find that information currently)

2a) what program can I use to monitor my Ghash/s performance?

2b) are there any other programs that I should have for mining? What can I use to monitor temp on my 7950?

3) Are there any books or other resources that really really get in depth about Bitcoin? (Litecoin an other cryptos would be great too!)  There seems to be a lot of "basics" reading material. I have read that stuff, I want to get past 101 and into intermediate and eventually advanced research.

3b) has anyone read "Bitcoin: A Basic explanation of everything"   ??

Am I missing something or is the search function on this site really that bad?

Nearly every time I try to search something I get this message:

The last posting from your IP was less than 32 seconds ago. Please try again later.

On a web community composed of computer educated people is it really impossible to search for something within 34 seconds of executing another command on this site?

Do I really have to go to google and type  :

Why use XRP at all and have to have IOUs?   Why not use bitcoin?

You can use Bitcoins with Ripple. You can do it right now with a few extra steps, but we're working on seamless gateways. Every merchant who takes Ripple is one more merchant you can pay with Bitcoins. And Ripple will provide a distributed, open market to buy and sell Bitcoins.

Would you be so kind as to explain these steps in a manner that would be sufficient for someone new to Ripple?

If possible, please post in thread and also PM me so I don't miss this info by accident.

Thanks

I honestly don't think the government gives a shit about a petition

If the elites want to do something they will just lie and say a study said that the majority of people are in favor of making it illegal, claim bitcoin funds terrorism, drugs and organized gang rape etc.
