42  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin-trader.biz on: July 02, 2014, 09:03:22 PM
It's better to deposit BTC into Bitcoin Trader (or any place that does immediate conversions; like Coinbase) during the middle of the weekday. This is when BTC is at it's peak, after which, towards the weekend it begins to fall by about $50 USD. Only to begin rising again come the next weekday.

It's also rather nice that Bitcoin Trader appears to lock you in on the about of BTC you're withdrawing.

I withdrew ~0.16 BTC, which at the time was $100 USD...believe that was when BTC was ~$601 USD.

...well, it's not $601 now Tongue

That $100 in BTC became ~$110 worth of BTC, which I then threw back into another Trade Share block...with a few extra BTC to give it a nice $220 look.

Figure this is all "money" I wouldn't have, normal, so not really concerned if I lose it.
...like finding a quarter on the sidewalk. You generally won't give a shit if you lose it later.

Finmutual collapsed?

Checking MNO Blog would help you keep up to date.

Didn't even know that existed :O

Edit: I usually check out Crypto Hedge on the weekends
Edit #2: Would be great if I had taken a screenshot of Younce's post...I don't recall if FinMutual was listed in 'his' sig as a trustworthy HYIP or not. And I really dislike throwing out accusations.

Cryptsy is starting with USD trading soon and are required to ask for official ID"s before you're allowed to trade even 1 dollar. If they don't, they would be shut down within no time by the government. That's a financial matter that goes way beyond a simple mining contract and requires different credentials.

By the way, in all the examples you show, no customer is holding up signs  Tongue
If GM wants to have extensive appraisal pages, then fine, might not be a bad idea, but no company will ask it's customers to hold up signs just because a very tiny portion of potential customers have extensive (actually I'm thinking unreasonable) legitimacy demands.

Would it help if I did that?! Would it make GM suddenly more reliable for you? Or would you go about thinking it might be a setup still...

Cryptsy seems to be going the extra mile and requiring the additional photo ID + photo of "you", the other's just use Photo ID/Passport and Residential Bill.

I'm aware that none of the examples should the exact method I suggested. I'm unable to find such specifics; only seems to occur on social media. This is why, after looking at other Testimonial pages, suggested Genesis use Shopify's way. It's hard to fake a twitter account to be older than it actually is...in fact, the only way would be to have someone on the 'inside'.
...don't forget, the postings too. An old account that only started posting tweets a few weeks ago is also suspicious.

So, a twitter account that's 'old', and has frequently tweeted would lend a lot more credibility to Genesis's operation.

I know this is 'unreasonable', but the only other option is to give them money and see if 'you' get any back, which even a Ponzi Scheme does...for a while. So even that isn't reasonable proof.

This is why there needs to be an 'eBay' or 'Amazon' for Bitcoin companies to register with. Whether it's selling goods for BTC instead of cash, cloud mining, or investing (buy low sell, sell high for profit-making), it'd be a one-stop-shop for all things BTC. This way users can rate a company or file a report to have the company removed from the site (obviously, would take significant amount of reports).

Then, the community can just use that site to look for Bitcoin options. This would make it much harder to run a scam operation, because people wouldn't (or shouldn't) trust any company not on that 'BTC Hub' site. And you can't stay on (or better yet, even get on) if you're not legit.

((What can I say, I'm OCD about finding ways to prevent loopholes....it's what I do Tongue ))
47  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Genesis-mining.com || World's leading hosted Scrypt hashpower provider! on: June 28, 2014, 10:26:01 PM
Are you serious? You think any company will go ask it's customers to please make a nice sign with name, and stuff on there, stand before a blank background holding up the sign and then make a picture and send an unedited full blown version so someone else can post that on the internet?! Dude, please tell me you're just kidding!

If any company would ask me such a thing the only pic they would get is the one below, accompanied by a nice bye bye letter
[image link snipped to prevent huge post; still funny, I'm saving that!]

Why, Bitcoin Exchanges are now starting to use this as additional verification of identity.

Example: https://www.cryptsy.com/images/nonuseg.jpg

Reasoning:

Quote
Why are we asking for this?

In an effort to ascertain the validity of non-US customers, we are asking that, in addition to submitting a government issued ID, you submit an image of you holding the ID with your face visible.

Please Click Here for an example.

But, all I'm suggesting is the people hold up a hand written sign with the same damn identifying information (First name, Last Initial, Country) that will already be posted to the Genesis website.

....And would-be Testimonialers (new word; coining it!) are already going to be submitting a "full image", which then gets resized, color-bleached, and then a CSS 'circle effect' applied. Only to make it, as they say, work with the website design. But the full image is still there...use a Code Inspector and you'll see the image is 664x664 for Testimonials and the 'About us' photos.

---

Other Examples:

http://rhhbschool.com/live-your-dream/stories/
--> Click on the person and you read their full story. In addition to seeing a full body shot. Or even better, a video.

http://www.shopify.com/press/buzz
--> Links to the person's Twitter, which is great, because you can see how old the Twitter account is.

http://www.davidairey.com/testimonials/
--> None of the photos are edited (read: faces cut out).

//Side Note:

I rather like how Shopify handles their testimonials. Because it'd be hard for Genesis to make fake Twitter accounts with out raising suspicion as to why all these testimonials have twitter accounts that are less than a month old.  Wink
48  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Genesis-mining.com || World's leading hosted Scrypt hashpower provider! on: June 28, 2014, 05:34:43 PM

Going forward, you might want to include the ability to click on a person's image to get a full body shot of them holding a sign reading their name (First name, last initial), location (country at least), and something directly related to Genesis Mining (ie "genesis-mining.com"; twitter handle; facebook url [excluding the "facebook.com"]). Furthermore, this full image shouldn't be touched-up or anything beyond resizing (500x500 should do nicely).
Wow. I'm getting really dark visions in my head when I read that. In short, that's WAY beyond reasonable. If somebody is willing to do so, fine, but you can't ask that of people, you can't even think about asking such a thing.

It's useless as well, because those who question everything, will also question the legitimacy of a pic provided in exactly this manner, or any manner. And you, as a professional questioner, should know that, Illutian.

How is it unreasonable?

The 'Testimonials' currently show the person's image, first name, last initial, and country:

Quote
Genesis Mining is the most efficient way of altcoin mining I can think of. Fortunately I found this Website before purchasing my own equipment. I'm very satisfied with their performance and support.

E-mail
Rene H., Germany

By adding that they'll be holding information about Genesis, that'll rule out 'stock photo' or Photoshopping (unless you have mad-talent for matching up shadows and such).

Also, by having the 'on click' image being completely unaltered (except for resizing if they sent in a huge, 2048x2048 shot) Genesis would back up the claim that they edited "Rene's" photo to better fit over the standardized background color.

The result, would be the to narrow down the possibilities to one (I'm sure others would think of more). That is, this 'Testimonial' was given by an employee or paid endorsement.

And that's fine, because I assume all testimonials are paid for or faked by employees. But at least I know they weren't Photoshopped Tongue

OR

Just do the live stream from the convention thing that I also mentioned.

I do feel you have a valid point about the testimonial page. I don't think the picture is fake though, just badly cut around, but it is quite small, so they probably thought, well nobody is going to take our pic and zoom in to it and discuss it, Maybe the original had a curtain in the background or a strange pattern, like what you get from a Passport Photo booth, and so they thought it would look better to crop around it.

Their own photos?? Well they were probably done especially for promotional material and their own website. The other guy would have just probably emailed them a picture.

Anyway, going back to that testimonial, It is old and has been there a while, so I have an idea.

Put some more testimonials up. You have more customers now. I have read reviews, listened to your interviews, add some more!
[...]

The image is 664x664, as is all the other's. 'Inspect Elements' is a wonderful tool Wink

And testimonials mean nothing in the digital age....unless they come from well-known and well-respected members of a community.

Hey!

The original photo is in color and our designer cropped the head (probably to get the right color scheme for the background). There is no way for a website to proof that a testimonial is real. To be honest, I do not see why cropping and changing the color to black-white is a big deal. I am willing to send the original picture to two forum members if this is helpful for anything (I have Rene's permission).

To make it very clear: Rene exist, he is a client of Genesis Mining and it is a real picture showing him. And yes, we should and will add more testimonials going forward. Thank you, Ian for the suggestion!

What annoyed me a bit is that having such a large image is actually a waste of bandwidth. I will talk to our webdesigner to reduce the image size to speed up the loading times of our webpage. So maybe a faster webpage is also the outcome of this discussion and this makes me happy Smiley

Have a good day everyone and happy mining,
  Marco

One of the things to look for in illegitimate websites is the use of 'stock photos' or oddly cut-out photos. So, me being mistrusting of even my own shadow, assume you're just another person/group wishing to take advantage of Bitcoin's....loose regulations.

That's really the only thing that made me question if your operation was legit or not.

Illutian, you are welcome to meet members of our team in Munich, Germany or any Bitcoin conference around the globe that we attend. Just let us know which you prefer and we'll arrange a meeting.

Honestly, you guys could just do a Live TwitchTV stream of the event; as in CEO is sitting there. With a live feed from the mining facility, with an employee holding up a GPS (coordinate-only would do nicely), running at the booth/panel or whatever is the standard setup for a Bitcoin Conference.

...fact this should probably become the de facto standard for all Bitcoin Investment Firms, which include those who derive their payouts from mining, as well as those who use straight up investment methods (ie "playing the stock market"; in this case Bitcoin market).
*NOTE: Obviously the GPS part would be altered to fit each Firm. Mining firms; mining location. Investment firms; main HQ location. But in both cases the GPS should be clearly readable.

There's been way too many scams that have muddied the waters for Bitcoin investment.  Undecided

//Side note:

And just to nip it. No this isn't a cop-out. I've passed up many vacations, in favour of staying home, because I hate travelling. And I dislike group scenes.

Well, thanks for your insights then, Illutian. Cool that you spotted the pic, but really, I still think you're making more out of this silly pic then it's worth.

Next time I'm in Munich I'll let you guys know , or is the invitation only for those with healthy criticism? Tongue

I always assume everyone is out to screw me over. I don't even trust my family; none of them have given me cause to mistrust them.

This did look promising.

Until I noticed something about the testimonial.

It's Photoshopped

That's a serious red flag when testimonials include images that are clearly cut out of a larger image....

Hiya.

Sorry I am missing your point here, surely if someone supplies you an image and you want to fit it in to your own web page design, sometimes you might have to do things with it, like resizing or cropping.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts or opinions, so I have said mine and you have yours.

It wasn't cropped or resized. It's clearly been cut out from another image, probably using something similar to the Magnetic Lasso, and then placed on a fake background.

If they just needed to resize the image to fit a predefined image container. They wouldn't need to cut out the person's face, and plop it onto a pre-sized background.

...it's a red flag. Why, assuming their company is legit, would they even risk altering any photo of any person beyond resizing, and maybe some minor touch up to remove blemishes. To do so, just screams "Fly by night operation".
Well I just think they did that as it fits in better to their webpage, notice the mail icon nearby which also has a grey background and is a circle and also the logos at the bottom of the page which are mostly circular and light grey, I think it personally is more of a design thing, rather than intentional.

If you are that suspicious, you could I suppose email the person in the picture, if you click on the mail icon, you can mail them personally and ask them their thoughts?

-_-'

The person's photo did not originally appear on that background...the background that makes a square image. If you look at the photos from the operators, you can clearly see that their face/body was taken with the shown background being in the original shot....all of them are square shots as well.

Simple use of CSS creates the round cut out that hides the rest of the square image.

I really don't understand how anyone can look at that guy's alleged photo and say "yep, that's legit".

For starters, the left ear is clearly missing parts of it.

The hair around the ear doesn't looks right. He likely had long hair that was swept back behind the ear.

The overall hair is wrong. Unless you're suggesting his hair is made of plastic; no stray groups of hair...hell even Conan O'Brien has tufts of hair that give the top of his hairline an uneven look.

The photo of the man is also lower quality than the background.

The left shoulder is uneven. Those "waves" are explicitly created when cutting an image out and having some of the "cut at" spill into the image you want to cut out.

lol, email them. Ya, let me email a person, who's photo has clearly been manipulated beyond simple resizing. I'm sure they'll be who they say they are.

A couple of posts way earlier in the forum mentioned profits above what they invested (over 100%). I'm now exactly mid way through my 120 day period and I don't see how I'm going to make back more than what I invested. It's a great return but not over 100%. I originally invested $40.00 and at the mid way point I have made 15.11, which will leave me slightly over a $30.00 profit by the end of the 120 day period or about a 75% ROI.

I believe the minimum sustained Profit per day is ~1.75% for the entire 120 days to earn an immediate profit (101% or more). Under that amount you'll have a deferred profit; profit when you get the initial capital back through the Share Repurchasing that occurs at the end of the 120 days contract.

Under a 1% profit per day, my first block of 4 Trade Pool shares ($80) will earn ~$70 at the end of the 120 days. If they repurchase at 100% of the purchase price then that $70 will have the initial $80 added to it, for $150.

Receiving the initial investment - at least concerning the trading shares - your net profit would be 70-80% of the initial investment. Eventhough it's maybe not what they promised, it's still so unbelievable high many here think it's a ponzie.

Possibly, I would recommend only investing -in any venture- what you're comfortable literally burning.

However, earning ~$20 a month on a $100 investment (math below for those who want it) isn't completely unheard of and happens in the Stock Market.
...time will tell who is/was right.

---
Math:
1% of 100 = $1/day

Trading time is Monday through Friday; 5 days a week.

Average weeks in a month; 4 weeks

5 * 4 = 20 * $1 = $20/mo * ~4 months = $80/120days
