401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Trying to run a node; cannot access Raspberry Pi on: August 22, 2021, 04:15:28 AM
I wanted to somehow make it work as a local VPS, where I can connect remotely via LAN. For example, I'll have burnt the Ubuntu 18.04 to the SD card and once it starts, I could connect via LAN from my main PC and start the installation there. Is this possible?
Sure is... as ETFBitcoin stated, you just use it as a "headless" setup and connect via "ssh" once you've finished creating the SD card and have configured the WiFi/Ethernet networking as per your network setup...

At that point, you need to do everything via the commandline... although, if you really wanted, you can easily use something like VNC to be able to gain access to a GUI environment: https://desertbot.io/blog/headless-raspberry-pi-4-remote-desktop-vnc-setup

The current security? How can a node, which will be connected with your lightweight client (such as Electrum), be vulnerable to security attacks? I get that you may lose a part of your privacy due to some code exploitations, but your security remains the same unless you get involved with lightning channels, isn't it?
If your network isn't secured propery, combined with the fact that Umbrel uses a lot of "default" (and published) passwords for things, could mean that an attacker could gain full access to your node etc. Any funds stored either in the Node itself (Bitcoin Core Wallet or Lightning channels etc) could potentially be at risk.

And the obvious privacy issues that go along with that.

The important thing is being aware of the current limitations of the Umbrel system... hopefully they will be rectified at some point.
402  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Possible download block chain for air gapped linux from windows? on: August 22, 2021, 04:04:08 AM
Yes you can transfer the block and chainstate data from a Windows-based Node to a drive for use on a Raspiberry Pi... I've done it twice whilst experimenting with RaspiBlitz and Umbrel.

The tricky part is that an external drive formatted for use with either of these systems, likely won't be readable on a Windows machine. You'll need to use ssh/scp to copy the files from the Windows Node to the Raspberry Pi drive across a network.

Note: I highly recommend using ethernet connections for this... WiFi will slow the entire process down quite a bit.

The last time I did it (a couple of weeks ago), it took a number of hours to copy the full blockchain data... but I was using a "slow" external HDD drive (Seagate 1TB expansion drive) connected to the Pi, as opposed to using an external SSD.
403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Best Hard Drive for Bitcoin Node? on: August 22, 2021, 03:55:44 AM
Getting back to shingled SMR slow drives, one of the interesting things I saw for improving speed for Hard Drives if you have supporting processor is using software called AMD StoreMI that combines SSD and HDD into drive, problem is that this software is only for Windows OS.
Only for Windows and, as noted, is actually AMD only... it requires a specific chipset:
If you have an AMD X570, PRO 565, B550, A520, 400 Series, X399, TRX40 or WRX80 motherboard, you can download StoreMI for free.

Meanwhile, Intel have something similar with their "Optane" system, but that involves buying an extra bit of hardware. It too is Windows only.

Both systems effectively seem to be creating "Hybrid" drives... so you get large storage on the HDD, combined with faster speeds by caching the frequently accessed data on the SSD. There is a fairly decent comparison of the two here: https://appuals.com/intel-optane-vs-amd-storemi-what-is-the-difference/
404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: please advice about bitcoin core wallet issue ... "input already spent" on: August 22, 2021, 03:43:44 AM
... useful info...
All useful information... if the OP had not deleted all their block data! Undecided

Today I deleted all "blocks" and "chainstate" folders and started to sync with network from 0, but that will take weeks to finish.

Will it find and add missing transactions to my wallet?
Once this finishes... your wallet transaction history and balance will correctly reflect the details that relate to the private keys that it currently contains.

However, given that you believe you may have used an old backup of your wallet.dat, it's impossible to say for sure at this point whether or not the current wallet.dat contains all the the private keys that your old one did.

Is your current wallet.dat an "HD" wallet? Huh Do you see this "HD" symbol in the bottom right corner:

Or do you see the HD symbol with an "X" through it?
405  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Lost bitcoins - Transferring from android to iOS (Both wallets from same seed) on: August 20, 2021, 02:48:17 AM
I have four outbound transactions in when restoring the wallet.

As I remember them:

All outgoing from Android Mycelium wallet:

1. Small to check that transfer from android to Kraken is working.
2. Sending 1 BTC from android to kraken.
3. Sending small portion from android to iPhone to see I it works.
4. Sending the rest of the balance from android to the iPhone.

5. Deleting mycelium on iPhone
6. Restoring and balance is same as Android Mycelium, 0.000X.
Are the addresses that the coins were sent to in #3 and #4, the same or different? Huh

In any case, it seems that instead of sending to the wallet on iPhone that uses the same seed and/or derivation path as the wallet on the Android device, it's been sent to a completely different wallet... otherwise, you would see the "incoming" transactions from #3 and #4 and not just the outgoing ones Undecided

Have you tried adding new "accounts" in Mycelium to see if maybe the addresses you sent to in #3 and #4 are in different HD accounts in Mycelium? Huh (This is effectively the same as changing the derivation path in Electrum from m/44'/0'/0' to m/44'/0'/1', m/44'/0'/2' etc)

Click the "Key+" icon or tap 3 dots and select "add account"... then select "Add Bitcoin HD Account"... Note that Mycelium only lets you have one "unused" HD account... so you may not be able to add a 3rd (or subsequent) account if the 2nd one has no transaction history.

If they're not there, then your chances of recovering these coins are going to be very low... Undecided
406  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Problem verifying download's signature on: August 20, 2021, 02:30:24 AM
Probably not related to the error you have been experiencing... but I've had issues verifying the downloads on Windows using Kleopatra, because the devs have modified the file name structure of the signature files (to include the text 'ThomasV' or 'sombernight_releasekey' or 'Emzy' to indicate which key it was signed with)...

Which means that the .asc files are now named differently to the .exe file, so the auto-verify doesn't work any more Undecided

It's not a HUGE problem... as you can simply rename the .asc file, but it's just annoying! Tongue
407  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: issue "operation not valid with the current stack size" on: August 20, 2021, 02:22:31 AM
I created the wallet myself.
...
My wallet is Electrum 4.1.5 [standard]

The transaction is imported
So this transaction was not created by your Electrum wallet at all... you're just trying to broadcast the transaction using your Electrum wallet.

So, the important question here is, where exactly did you import this transaction from? Huh Did someone or some website/service send this to you claiming you could broadcast it to receive funds? If so, and you have given someone money/services/goods for it... you've probably been scammed. Undecided

Or did you create this transaction yourself in another wallet? If so, what wallet? Huh
408  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Backing up and restoring Electrum Portable on: August 20, 2021, 02:12:04 AM
I would agree with nc50lc... you should grab the wallet files from the "electrum_data" directory where you were running Electrum Portable and copy/use those after you migrate/update to the new setup.

The wallet file will contain a lot of information that is not able to be recovered with just the 12 word recovery seed such as custom labels on transactions and addresses and added addresses/contacts etc.

If you have issues with trying to use the wallet file, then you safe in the knowledge that you can use the 12 word seed to recover your funds Wink
409  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Have paper backups of a 2015 and a 2016 Armory wallet. on: August 20, 2021, 01:57:14 AM
Wallet version was 1.35c at that time.
That's still valid for the 0.96.5 version of Armory... it's really referring to the backup system version, not so much the version of the software.

Are there any known issues with importing an Armory watching-only wallet to Android BTC wallets?
Yes there are issues... in that, basically, it's not actually possible. Undecided

This would use the paper backup. I hope to be able to scan in the QRC. Any thoughts? Any recommendations on which Android wallet works the best?
The 1.35c Armory "paper wallet", is just an Armory Backup with a "Root Key" (the 2 lines of 9 groups of 4 chars), is that correct?

You won't be able to use that Root Key with any software other than Armory... it's a system unique to Armory and I am not aware of any other wallet software that can process it.

Also, the QR Code is simply the root key text encoded as a QR code... so, you won't be able to scan it with any other wallet unless it can actually import Armory root keys (and again, there are none that are able to... that I am aware of)

410  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 20, 2021, 01:33:07 AM
Just found out it comes with an interesting [probably not for everyone out there, but it brings back good old memories] "secret" menu.
How did I know it was going to be "Snake" before I even clicked on the link? Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Probably because the device looks like an old Nokia phone Tongue Roll Eyes

And honestly... I'm kinda proud of myself for NOT having a collection like Jameson... I've been soooo restrained with hardware wallets. I've had shopping carts all loaded up and got to checkout and was like "No! I don't need another one" hahaha.
411  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How To Verify the Downloaded Version of Ledger Live on: August 20, 2021, 01:14:56 AM
The point is that everybody just look around, you may already have a tool that makes you the hash.
Sadly, my "go to" which is the "CRC SHA" context menu that 7-Zip installs only supports SHA256 Undecided  Is great for Bitcoin Core as it is still using SHA256's for it's release hashes, but it seems Ledger have gone to the extreme with SHA512.

All in all, it's useful to know that LL also has checksum one can verify.
Very... I didn't even know that they had these listed! Shocked Undecided
412  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 20, 2021, 01:08:37 AM
Well... given that to access all the memory you simply need to extract the SDCard and read it as opposed to having to open a sealed unit and downloading data from the flash memory, then I guess one could argue that it's potentially "easier" to execute certain attacks on the PiTrezor than on a standard Trezor ONE.

Otherwise, assuming all the steps are followed, I'd say they are comparable in terms of security etc... with the disclaimer that I have not personally audited the PiTrezor code.
413  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Hashcat and Atomic wallet ?? for kali linux users or pentesters please help. on: August 20, 2021, 01:00:19 AM
As far as I'm aware, there is no known way to extract a password hash from the atomic wallet files (which is what you'll need to be able to use hashcat).

This doesn't mean it isn't technically possible... just that no-one has figured it out... and if I had to guess, I would guess that it will not be figured out in the near future as the codebase for the wallet is closed-source. They do have a github, but it just seems to be a bunch of forks of code from other blockchain related projects, which I assume is the devs figuring out how to support all the altcoins they support.

Recovery for Atomic wallet is meant to be via the 12 word recovery phrase... I'm assuming you do not have your 12 words? Huh
414  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory-like Ethereum Wallet on: August 19, 2021, 08:57:29 AM
You can run MEW (MyEtherWallet) offline in a cold storage type setup: https://kb.myetherwallet.com/en/offline/using-mew-offline/

Other than that, I'm not aware of any other "cold storage" type setup for ETH, except for the use of Hardware Wallets. Undecided
415  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Stuck Scanning Transaction History on: August 19, 2021, 08:43:51 AM
This is a very late reply... but I think those errors are indicating that your Bitcoin Core is running in "pruned" mode... did you enable pruning on your node? check bitcoin.conf for "prune=" line... or in the Bitcoin Core GUI, "Settings->Options->Main" and make sure that the "Prune block storage" option is NOT checked:

Armory requires an "unpruned" Bitcoin Core node that is fully synced to be able to function properly. If you can't run an unpruned node due to lack of storage space, and you currently have funds in your armory wallet that you need to recover, you'll need to either increase the storage on your device so Bitcoin Core can fully sync the 400Gigs of blockchain, or you'll need to export your private keys out of Armory and then import them into another wallet (like Electrum)... refer: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4746784.msg43255691#msg43255691
416  Bitcoin / Mycelium / Re: Lost bitcoins - Transferring from android to iOS (Both wallets from same seed) on: August 19, 2021, 08:36:37 AM
That is correct, but also before transferring to the iPhone we sent one BTC to Kraken to sell it, sold this one.
And the rest should be on the balance, but as mentioned it now says 0.000X instead of correct amount.
So you sent 1 BTC to Kraken before you transferred the rest to the iphone? Huh So, you can see that as a separate transaction in your transaction history? If so, then that would make nc50lc's theory incorrect:
It also falls to scenario 1 or 2 in the list in my previous reply of "possible scenarios".
....
The change of "from deleted IOS wallet to Kraken" transaction should be in that deleted wallet, not in the Android Mycelium.

And since the original deleted IOS Mycelium seems to be a different wallet (I mean not a copy of your Android Mycelium),
when you restored using the seed of  "Android Mycelium", the restored wallet to IOS Mycelium only has the "0.000X BTC" balance which is the change of the "from Android to IOS transaction".

As the transaction happened before the coins were transferred to the "deleted IOS wallet"... which then begs the question...

what is the last transaction that you can see in your recovered wallet? Huh Following your description, it should be the transaction that sent from "Android to IOS"... is that correct? Huh
417  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: PiTrezor DIY Hardware Wallet (with a twist) on: August 19, 2021, 08:17:18 AM
A very cool little DIY project... One of the advantages that the "Trezor" ecosystem has had is that it doesn't rely on a secure element.

Would be interesting to see if someone could get the Trezor T firmware working on a similar setup for the added features that would offer.
418  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Thoughts about Passport hardware wallet on: August 19, 2021, 08:09:06 AM
It does seem expensive compared with other hardware wallets... but if it really does what it says on the tin, then it's a fairly decent solution.

It really does have some nice features, but given that I already have 3 or 4 hardware wallets, I can't really justify the $299 price tag just for a couple of "nice to have, but not essential" features Undecided

Maybe if Bitcoin moons to $100k I'll splash out for shits and giggles Wink
419  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor-Suite and OS tracks? on: August 19, 2021, 08:00:38 AM
Excellent thread... and thanks for posting the scripts! Anything which helps users to enhance their privacy and/or security should be commended.

Also, kudos for the info on secure-delete

And just FYI, if anyone goes looking for similar data on Windows, it should be found in your "AppData" directory. Specifically: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\@trezor\suite-desktop\
420  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: making fake HW wallets(will we see this scam next)?? on: August 19, 2021, 07:53:59 AM
This "scam" isn't really any different to the one where certain paper wallet generators were giving out a set of pre-generated private keys known to the scammers.

It could just as easily be perpetrated using any type of wallet... web wallet, desktop wallet, mobile app or a "scam" hardware wallet.

The key is to ensure you have some way of ensuring that the addresses being displayed do indeed belong to the seed/private keys being generated. In the case of hardware wallets, having 2 from different manufacturers is certainly one way to be able to determine if the addresses being displayed are indeed correct for a given seed.

However, as someone else mentioned earlier... it doesn't really guarantee that the seed/private keys themselves are actually being randomly generated. For that, you'd probably need to generate your own seed (offline) using dice or something similar.
