4001  Economy / Economics / Re: Energy FUD!!! on: September 08, 2022, 08:47:13 AM
And of course, it has grown, have you seen how the hashrate went up from last year?

I keep reading that there was an increase in the hash rate, but I didn't know until now that it was such a big increase, and then it makes sense that the energy consumption has also increased quite a bit. It seems that the on-duty critics still haven't got hold of the new data, which will surely serve them for new attacks at a time when we have a real energy crisis anyway.
4002  Economy / Economics / Re: Energy FUD!!! on: September 07, 2022, 03:37:55 PM
I wonder where those figures come from and if they're even accurate.

A previous source of this infographic was the Bitcoin Mining Council and I know I've seen it many times on the forum. What has changed in this infographic from the OP is the total consumption that Bitcoin mining has on an annual level, and compared to before (188 TWh), it now amounts to 247 TWh.

I'm not an expert and I can't say if it makes sense that the energy consumption has increased so much, or if it's photoshop, given that the source is a telegram channel.
4003  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fiat Banks Conspiracy Against Customers. Bitcoin is the Best Option on: September 07, 2022, 03:22:01 PM
~snip~
All these nonsense can never happened in bitcoin space. Really I don't think such thing will happen in crypto ecosystem. Since bitcoin uses p2p, I can use my fund at anytime. The only thing that can hinder my transaction is network.

Everyone who uses CEX (centralized crypto exchange) can find themselves in the same problem as any client who has money in the bank. Any centralized option that provides the option to store/transfer Bitcoin is therefore no better than any bank. Unfortunately, this is something that many do not understand and live in the false belief that they are safe, and at any moment their funds can be hacked, the account blocked or the entire service can be unavailable.

What you wrote about Bitcoin is only valid if you use a non-custodial wallet, and if you know how to determine the fee at the time of sending the transaction to avoid paying more than necessary, or so that the transaction does not get stuck because you set a much lower fee and on that way you have a very low priority among miners.
4004  Economy / Economics / Re: Russia To Legalize Use Of Cryptocurrency In International Trade on: September 07, 2022, 02:28:26 PM
Too much noise for no reason when it comes to Russia - because their legalization of what they call "cryptocurrencies" is taking much longer than it has been for the past few months. In the end, it all came down to a bunch of unverified information and recycling of old news.

Two key things that are recycled in the article are the mention of Bitcoin as a means of payment for countries that would like it when it comes to trading with Russia, but isn't it ironic that they mention Turkey that has banned Bitcoin as a means of payment, or China that has banned everything what does it have to do with cryptocurrencies? The second, even more important fact is what the great leader thinks about it, and he clearly said that he does not think it is an option.

Will the Russians start using their cryptocurrency or will the Chinese use their digital yuan in international trade is a much more meaningful question than whether they will use Bitcoin. In the event that Bitcoin is in such a focus, it will not be anything good because then it will become just another target that will need to be sanctioned.
4005  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if the price of Bitcoin continued to fall during the halving? on: September 07, 2022, 01:42:07 PM
During a world war, I'm sure a lot of assets would be destroyed. But is BTC particularly vulnerable?

A world war is like a cancer that destroys everything except those who produce the means by which people destroy each other. If that ever happens, the least of your worries will be Bitcoin, and of course if you survive a nuclear, chemical or biological weapon.

Quote
What if the price of Bitcoin continued to fall during the halving?

And why would it be strange if we know that the effects of halving are not visible right now, but only in the months after that? There is a chance that in 2 years Bitcoin will be worth 5 or 10 times less than today, but you have to ask yourself how achievable such a thing is? I don't think it's a very promising scenario, but for those who think differently, maybe it's time to leave the Bitcoin ship.
4006  Economy / Reputation / Re: [Investigation] Fighting The Account Mafia on: September 07, 2022, 10:57:03 AM
Anybody got a message from the account roslinpl as well? Those who have tagged him? I got a message saying that he wants my feedback to be removed.

It is not strange that he tries to change something in an individual way, but such attempts are quite useless in my opinion. If he wants to prove something, then let him do it publicly. I think it's best to ignore such things, but everyone decides for themselves.
4007  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Video Gaming Sector Consumes More Energy Than Bitcoin Mining. on: September 07, 2022, 10:26:18 AM
I don't see the point anymore in trying to justify Bitcoin mining with the fact that someone or something consumes more or less energy, because those who persistently advocate that Bitcoin is a danger to the environment will not give up their ideas. If, for example, it is a fact that all devices in the US spend more energy on standby in one year than all devices that mine Bitcoin, will anyone understand how pointless it is to talk about Bitcoin mining in the context of the impact on the environment?

My question is; Why then do people talk about Bitcoin mining power consumption like it is the most and worst energy consumer?

There are people who live in delusions, those who are paid to tell lies and convince others that it is true, and finally those who believe in all that and spread those lies wherever they go. If someone offered you a salary of $10 000 a month to promote Bitcoin mining as something dangerous, would you be able to resist the offer?
4008  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Netflix banned Bitcoin, Human Rights Foundation Donates. on: September 07, 2022, 10:07:25 AM
Heck I didn't even know Netflix had ads.

I think that this is part of their new business strategy, which means that there will be cheaper subscriptions that will include advertisements, and those who do not want them will have to pay a higher price. Something similar to what YT has, if ads annoy you, buy a premium service and enjoy without distractions. In addition, the competition is getting bigger and bigger in the world of streaming services, so Netflix is no longer what it was 5-6 years ago.
4009  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA Champions League 2022/23 Season on: September 07, 2022, 09:53:54 AM
I still cannot accept the Dinamo (1-0) Chelsea result. Dinamo Zagreb gave Chelsea a great performance in their 1-0 Champions League win over Chelsea.

Bookmakers made big money last night because people bet on a club because of its name, and they don't take into account some much more important things. Chelsea was the favorite only on paper, and on the field it turned out that they were not equal to any (for them) small club that most of the players probably had no idea existed. Three years ago, Dinamo ZG also defeated Atalanta in the first round, and even then it was a surprise.

I cannot accept that the result is only 1-0, because Dinamo had another excellent chance and the victory should have been even more convincing.
4010  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: We are all Hodlonaut on: September 06, 2022, 02:09:07 PM
I think I read in some tweet from hodlonaut that he talks about an amount of even $3 million as something that would be enough in every possible outcome. In any case, it is a very large amount and I hope that so much money will not be needed even if the verdict is unfavorable for hodlonaut.

I can't say how many donations was collected from some famous names, but some of them surely want to remain anonymous in order not to become the next target of Faketoshi. Maybe it's not so bad, although the public support of big companies would be nice at least as a moral support. Now that you have written what Jesse Powell donated, maybe it would be better if he remained silent like Brian Armstrong - but if they turn their backs on Bitcoin in this way, maybe the crypto community will repay them in some other way.
4011  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Streaming football subscription using payment bitcoin? on: September 06, 2022, 01:52:38 PM
Maybe it's not same as satelellite, but I wouldn't say that image quality of IPTV is very poor. There is some providers who have bigh bitrate channels in not compressed quality, 50fps image and even some 4k channels. Satellite is good, but also have some disadvantages, like it don't work very well during strong rain.

Even the best-tuned satellite dish will not be able to receive the signal in some extremely difficult weather conditions, such as heavy rain or snow, but this has rarely happened to me. What happened to me a lot was a break in the internet connection that used to last for several days, and then the IPTV was completely useless.

I have to say I agree. Even when buying premium IPTV (the hardware plus their own dedicated VPN), I find the live streams for sports, football especially as OP would like, is never reliable enough when it comes to the actual game. It's actually much faster to search for an available stream with a web browser than it is on any IPTV app (Yogurt, Kodi, hardware).

When there is the biggest load on the servers, then problems arise - this is something that even the largest legal providers cannot prevent, let alone those who try to cram as many users as possible onto one server. And then the owner convinces you that the problem is in your internet, in the device you are watching on or in some mysterious force that disturbs the whole thing.
4012  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trying to have more knowledge about hardware wallet on: September 06, 2022, 01:07:35 PM
What amount of funds you will hold that you will start getting worried of having to buy a hardware wallet? Can you give me a number? 5000$ 10,000$? What advice would you give someone under 1000$ of asset in hold?...

I would not say that it is only about the amount expressed in fiat at some point, but also about the fact that if you have $1000 of value in BTC today, in x years that value may be $5000, which means that you need to think a little differently than when we store fiat. In addition, security comes from the fact that you know what you are doing - even an ordinary hot wallet like Electrum on a desktop computer can be completely safe for larger amounts if you have a virus/malware free computer, and you know how to verify wallet files before installation.
4013  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proof of Work is the right consensus mechanism for exchanging value trustlessly on: September 06, 2022, 12:55:07 PM
With the right PoW anyone can aswell be a verifier in the consensus mechanism without high barrier to entry problem. Verifiers could also earn some reward in a more advanced PoW when they achieve high degree of accuracy in a certain period of time. The reward does not necessarily have to be financial, it could be inform of good/positive Reputation, Merit etc

This is not true.

"Verifiers" do not receive merit neither reputation.
The correct term is "miners", and they receive only bitcoin as a reward for their processing power and energy costs. This is not dependent of a "high degree of accuracy in a certain period of time", they just join a pool and receive rewards proportional to their processing power.

I think you are all mistaken because you think that our greatest magician is talking about POW in the context of Bitocin, when in fact this thread is a continuation of his mission to show that he himself is a very special and not appreciated enough person considering his alleged abilities. The man is actually telling you about some imaginary POW that would reward people like him, which of course is a fantasy that has nothing to do with Bitcoin.

4014  Other / Meta / Re: What the hell is going on with these spammers? on: September 06, 2022, 11:00:09 AM
And that's no dig on the moderators of Bitcoin Discussion, because trying to keep that section clean would be a full-time job for a team of people, which bitcointalk doesn't have.

I would not agree that there are no resources in the sense that there are not enough moderators, but that there are not enough of those who report posts/topics that break the rules in that board. I am personally active there every day and I do my part, but I think that board should be additionally protected in a way to prevent Newbies and all those who have not earned at least 5 merits from posting there.

It is not something that would solve the problem with poor quality posts or ordinary spam, but it would be a good start if we want the Bitcoin discussion not to be overrun like some other boards.
4015  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UEFA Champions League 2022/23 Season on: September 06, 2022, 10:49:02 AM
What I know is that Dinamo ZG is in good shape and wins in every game in the domestic league without any problems, and if Chelsea is not in the best shape and if they are missing some important players, then it is an opportunity for Dinamo. The interesting thing about the match is that UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin will be at the stadium tonight, together with the legendary Zvonimir Boban and some other high-ranking UEFA officials. One more reason for everyone to do their best and play a good game.
4016  Other / Meta / Re: What the hell is going on with these spammers? on: September 06, 2022, 10:10:53 AM
Lately I keep seeing new forum members creating a thread in Bitcoin Discussion section talking about an altcoin.
---
Does anyone know why this is happening?

It is irrelevant whether it is about people who just open the first board on the forum and post anything unrelated to that board, or about professionals who just want as much visibility as possible for the projects they are promoting. They simply need to be reported like any other topic that has nothing to do with the Bitcoin discussion, and there are quite a few of them.

I personally am not surprised that some beginners and scammers take advantage of the fact that the Bitcoin discussion is the first board on the forum and it certainly has a very good exposure, but that even much more experienced members use that board for various topics that do not belong there.
4017  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for September on: September 06, 2022, 09:34:07 AM
~snip~
I otherwise think the first half of the month could end up being quite bearish, with fears of MtGox coins being redistributed. But once retailers recognise that these repayments won't all be at once, and will likely take until the end of the year, then price can start to recover. Not that 10% extra selling pressure in a day would change much, but clearly the fear factor will always be of further capitulation until proven otherwise.

According to all relevant information, this distribution will not begin in the next 3-6 months, which means that it will not happen until the end of this year. Personally, I think that this information is something that the majority interpreted completely wrongly, because the fear of some 140 000 BTC that will be dumped at some point is complete nonsense. People needed a reason to explain the bear market and they found it, and the fact that their reason is completely meaningless doesn't worry anyone too much.
4018  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Russian Invasion of Ukraine[In Progress] on: September 05, 2022, 02:30:37 PM
Well, I hope this photo of the Ukrainian flag in Vysokopolye justifies the several thousand dead soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the week of the counterattack on Kherson.

Your propaganda is bad, you should have written several tens of thousands to make it more convincing. People who fight for their country and their women and children are not afraid of death, and everyone who died did so honorably - unlike your compatriots whom the Russian authorities do not even want to bury with dignity, but leave them to rot on Ukrainian soil.
4019  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for September on: September 05, 2022, 02:24:20 PM
You ask a difficult question, because both options are possible considering the moment we are in - and these are special economic circumstances that have not been seen at least in the past 40-50 years. Therefore, this is not only a test for Bitcoin, but also for the stock market and for all related markets that face great challenges.

I'm not pessimistic, but at the moment it seems to me that we are closer to $15k, although I don't think it will happen that the price will drop that low (at least not this month). Maybe we will see another attempt to get closer to $25k, but like the first time, it is hard to expect that many will not try to profit and thus bring down the price again. When you are in a bear market, every opportunity for profit is good, no matter how modest it may seem (at least for small investors).
