^This is really making a big issue over pulling an extra 50GH out of a unit - a value of less than $18. voiding warranty or buying a second $20 fan and spending the time to install it is not worth it.

At the peak speeds, any improvements you make come at the cost of about 1-1.2W/GH. Running at 1500GH uses approx 210W less than running at 1700GH. Unless you have very cheap power it will likely make sense by summertime to throttle back the hardware to improve the overall efficiency - or have heat problems.

I personally have 3 arriving this week that I hope to achieve ~1400GH/800W so that the fan can be kept at a reasonable volume. At $0.15/kwh it doesnt make much sense for me to try and get another 300GH/400W out of the unit, as the added hashrate gains are entirely spent on added power draw. Same reason as Ive throttled my SP10 units from 1400Gh to 1260GH to save 200W

Sorry @knlondike but you misunderstood me.

You calculate with a fix price of the machine.

Calculate cost and profit.

I'm not speeking about the only 50ghs but when the weather gets warmer this will be 100ghs (from 1680 ghs) or more.

At 20 pieces it's 2000ghs....

And i have room much more than 20....

I hope you unerstand why i'm trying to find some solution.....

curious what you pay for power. I understand the aspect of clocking hardware to its limit if its profitable, but if you need to make >$10 in modifications to gain 50GH/60W per unit, plus have slightly more PSUs/TH it could be more practical to buy an extra SP20 for that extra 1.65TH/$500. If its a hobby to do modifications though thats another story Smiley

Ok I'll give up...  Smiley

For me it's not hobby... It was a hobby with a Jupiter and some S1-s.

Maybe would be practical to buy one more unit for sure. But I have a lot of high cfm fans and other parts laying around....

But at this point I give up. You don't know a lot of details so you can't make a judgement what am i do and why. But trust me, I have the reasons.

So back to the original question.

Any ideas to improve the cooling?  Grin

Do you live in a winter climate?   do you have a home?  can you get cold air to flow from outside to the intake on the miners.

open a window put box fans in the window blow in cold air to the intake of the miners then open a second window let the hot air blow out.

you would need 2 windows and a room with a shut door to do this build a pair of vents to direct the air.  you say you have 20 of these

so they stack 5 high  make a 4 by 5 stack of them  direct the cold air in and the hot air out.
40122  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S-5 review. on: December 29, 2014, 08:43:09 PM
I just missed delivery of my S-5.  Probably going to have to wait until Wednesday to get it now.  Such tears.   Cry

same. UPS stuck a tag to my door and didn't even try the intercom. Ill be picing it up this evening or tmorrow morning.

ps: came to this thread expecting a delivered and reviewed unit - all i found was a bunch of reserved posts and no pictures of an S5.  Cry dissapointed

yeah a bit of a tease sorry.

the test bed is  here waiting on UPS

Still waiting on mine.  3 hours or less.
40124  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: December 29, 2014, 07:53:01 PM
well many of us have said it is not really a 1700 watt gh/s miner

I do agree and appreciate the reviews I have seen.  I just did not see many discussing the actual 1700 issue until after deciding on the GB.  Most reviews have been talking about the undervolting rather than actual performance to spec.  Again, for just a couple of units it's not really an issue.  Now if I want to spend $10k for year end, then it would add up.

just wait about 1 more day .

the s-5 for review is on the  UPS truck as i type.

you may as well know how it tests before you order from either company.

These two are kind of the only 2 that make sense for a home miner.

You may as well wait 10-12 more hours.  it is about 3 pm   and it should arrive before 6 pm

40125  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: December 29, 2014, 07:22:07 PM
yes the key is proper cold.    not too cold  -5 to +5c     or 23f to 40f   good psu  high fan and boom 1700gh is yours.

So who keeps their home that cold?  This is suppose to be a 'home' miner.  I'm looking forward to receiving mine in the next couple of days.  I knew about the loudness of the fan, but didn't realize it doesn't reach the stated speed under 'normal' conditions.  We don't even keep our server rooms lower than 65f.

Oh well, live and learn.  I'll compare them to the S5s when they arrive and decide from there based on $/gh & j/gh what my end of year purchases will be.  Right now, the S5 is leading on the 'expected' $/gh for home mining.

well many of us have said it is not really a 1700 gh miner

Just curious how many S5's you guys are running at home.  I miss mining- sold my S3's after 2 months.  The difficulty to power cost just seemed too far off.  Since you can just buy btc now for cheap.  But dammit I miss running my machines.

what does power cost you? at 15 cents a k-watt   or more and there is no good choice

this is what I did 9 sp20E's   and 1 s-5 all underclocked a lot works best for me. and I have to tear the whole thing down in may as my rates go to summer price of 16 cents.

In the cold wither I pay 13 cents but I get a lot of heat which lowers my  13 cents to 10 cents.

So extra units with  underclock works best for me.

40129  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Bitminter bitcoin mining pool - Pays TxFees, Merged Mining, Fair PPLNS rewards on: December 29, 2014, 05:32:41 PM
well little guys find it tough to wait for a block.
and if you moved up a bit to  1 or 2 th it was costly.
I think the euro miners are just quitting due to power cost.
My in house setup maxes at 4-6k in the winter and about 2 k in the summer.

Even with 9 sp20E's and 1 s-5 I can only run them under clocked. I can do 12th and that does not earn 1btc a week if a pool is a bit unlucky.

power cost for me is 565 usd a month 4 coins = 1265 so I am clearing 700 a month if I get average luck.

Very tough to mine if your power is 15 cents  a kwatt or more.

My s5 arrived this morning just as i was going out (wife and i at hotel for a couple of days) so i haven't had chance to unpack the box yet. I'll do as full a review as i can and set up some pictures for all your viewing pleasure when i get home on 31st.
Thanks Bitmain!

I am sitting typing this and watching sons of anarchy on netflix.  the miner is on the truck.  If I am lucky the show ends in 90 minutes and the miner comes right after it.
40131  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will the difficulty go down again ? on: December 29, 2014, 04:21:20 PM
According to https://alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator

Next difficulty retarget occurs at block 336671.0 (eta 1.1 days): 40554014444.1 / +2.8% [est.]

According to https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

Estimated Next Difficulty:   40,636,150,150 (+2.99%)

Adjust time:   After 174 Blocks, About 1.1 days

Why is the difference in stat ?

3 or 4 ways can be used to predict the number.
some sites use previous 1000+  blocks
some use previous 500 + blocks
some use every block since the last adjustment about 1950 as of now

http://www.bitcoincharts.com/

as of this post this site says new diff will be 40,186,743,801   you can be safe to say 40.1 to 40.9 will be it next time.
40132  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: December 29, 2014, 02:43:00 PM
Outside temp is now -2 deg.  I put a drilled metal plate to stop insects or small particles to be sucked from asics.

My record till now is that. Just like is advertised Cheesy

I sent mmpool a trust rating this is the second one I sent.
I would mention to any bigger player when we hit a block some of us get .5 btc or more and mmpool has paid us everytime.
He should get some trusts from us.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=308507

he has paid me more the 11btc since 9-11-2014 this shows last 5 payments

40134  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: Paypal Group Buy - Antminer S5 (USA Customer Only) $480 includes Shipping on: December 29, 2014, 01:34:31 PM
I would also bring up as a long time buyer-seller on paypal. (2003)   Many people get discounts from paypal.

I get a standing 2% minimum discount that does not affect the seller's bottom line.

So that 480 paypal price  now = 480 - 9.60  or 471.40.  Once I get my s-5 today I may do a paypal buy for 1 more. So if btc changes and shoots up I

paid in cash.

I also belong to square trade and as amazing as it sounds I most likely could get a 2 or 3 year warranty on this item for 30 or 40 usd more.

Not sure I want to do that but it is a possible option.
40135  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 17 to Dec 29th diff thread (-0.32%) to (-0.12%) on: December 29, 2014, 01:14:49 PM
Well with a day to go we are near 4% so lets say we end at 40.7 diff.

Diff was 39.6 on Nov 5th  How many of us would think that from Nov 5th to Jan 12th  diff would go from 39.6 to 40.7.

I use Jan 12th Since diff will be the same from Dec 30th to Jan 12th.  This would be a 68 day time period in which we have had an increas off about

2.77 %.

So Jan 12 to March 9 is 68 days.  and 40.7 x 1.0277 = diff at 41.8 up to march 9th.  I don't think so but it would make for a very interesting winter.
40136  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Spondoolies Tech SP20 Succesor ? on: December 29, 2014, 03:51:45 AM
I heard they were going to go comercial hosting only ie box with blades 10 blades to a box each blade 10k or some such

in other words the RUMOR I HEARD is they are getting OUT of units for home use and kinda sorta hosting sold units to commercial firms and or rates
*ie stuff that needs to be hosted* due to power and cooling requirements

(probably wrong but what I heard)

bums me out the only trustworthy bunch out there in the world imho

wanted an SP20 but at 1200w with a Titan now and 100 amp service etc just can't make the $$$ fly with the numbers
of btc made

so it goes

dude why on earth do you think it uses 1200 watts.

if you just clock it to 1275 you will be at 700 watts.

forgetting your power supply limits for 1 minute .

1200  watts high clock does   1650gh
700   watts low clock does     1275gh
470   watts  lower clock does 1025gh
400   watts  lowest clock does 900gh

the  record low  is here  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=896161.msg9953144#msg9953144

Just going by the specs that spondoolies posted on their site (see tech section below page 1200 watts)

http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/products/holiday-special-sp20-jackson-shipping-from-stock

but yeah your above points are good to know indeed

I wish they would have listed it as 1450 stock and overclock to 1550-1700.

this page warms the cockles of my old heart   Smiley good to see BMT and SP-T discussing things and acting together.

Yes, it's good for the community to have at least 2 decent manufacturers.

sadly, that's it. We don't have any more honest outfits out there. I have mad respect for both of them for making quality products and providing good support. My interactions have always been professional and pleasant with them. Kudos to both of you. Smiley

I see the two of them   head and shoulders above  them all the other builders.

1. No.
2. How is that relevant?

he quoted my post in which I refer to his server runs this pool.
