4021  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price history -- most profitable and bloodiest months, days on: December 24, 2020, 12:25:07 PM
This effect always strikes me a little bit. I guess this was less prominent when bitcoin was a “nerd money”, as they didn’t care about weekends.
Now bitcoin is more institutionalised money, so I guess there’s a correlation with  inflows/outflows from traditional banking systems, working only on workdays. But I am wondering about the future: how to match a 24/7 market with a 9/17 workday only traditional system? I guess this is only an incident in history.
I think I made a similar post on the linked threads, but this aspect puzzles me a lot.
It is hard to say because I don't have enough evidence (data) to prove it. What I get here is very raw picture but it give us something. Personally, I thought that the workday effects on price (volatility) and weekend effects on transaction fees can be explained as simply as this:
  • Whales can be a single person, a group or institutes. Of course, to manipulate price they need to work as a group (there are potential conflict of interests between groups). They are rich so they don't have dedication to trade and play with the market in weekends that are time for them to enjoy entertainment in live.
  • The market is actively trading 24/7 but the game is in the hands of whales, not all traders. Without big market makers, the market is less volatile.

In Interquartile range ranks, there is no changes for all-year period or for 2020-only period. Let's see whether it will be change next 1, 2 or 5 years (after the next halving).
Ooops! Let's me check the result again. It seems I mistakenly copied and pasted the result. Confirmed it !

Differences between median and IQR of 2020-only and all-year.
  • median_diff = median20 - median
  • iqr_diff = iqr20 - iqr
  • median_diff2 = median20 - median20ex (ex means excluded)
  • iqr_diff2 = iqr20 - iqr20ex
  • In difference of median, values of 2020 tend to higher than all-year period in workdays. Good and likely logic for all days, except Tuesday. I don't know how to explain the strange day.
  • Differences look bigger for 2020 and non-2020 period (see at the bottom)

@SFR10,

  • Your post reminds me that the current pie chart is arbitrarily displayed. I don't know how mining pools are sorted out in that chart as I can not find any orders by alphabetical or percentage orders.
  • If @bitmover wants to stick with the piechart, I think it's better to use a simple color theme (in the order of transparency (light to dark or cold to hot and vice versa).
  • The color theme from jochen-hoenicke.de can be considered. It is better than mempool.space's color theme (that somewhat is similar to the current color in the pie chart, mix arbitraritly).
  • I explained my idea there
4023  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Transactions explanation on: December 24, 2020, 06:50:16 AM
The chapter 2 in Mastering Bitcoin can help you. Some things you need to pay attention on:
  • Inputs
  • Outputs
  • Change address (in outputs)

I discovered that all transactions are listed on sites like blockchain.com.
Bitcoin has its pubic ledger and all transactions are recorded on its full nodes. Blockchain.com is one of site, on which they build up a block explorer for bitcoin transactions.

Quote
I see very interesting sums so I clicked one to see its details: how come that from one sender the transaction come with 2 recipient addresses?
I see also 2 sender addresses that are sent 2 other, all in one hash...
If you are senders, you can send your bitcoin by some inputs in your bitcoin wallet (the wallet you are using need to have a coin control feature). By sending 2 inputs to one new receiving address, if it is another address of yours, it is called as consolidation of your inputs.

If the total amount you send out is smaller than total amount in that 2 inputs, you have the leftover, it can be sent to a change address. To protect your privacy, you should use a change address.

4024  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Electricity Consumption on: December 24, 2020, 05:48:55 AM
There are seasonal cycles with difficulty adjustments on the bitcoin network. It usually appears are late of the second quarter or very late months of every year. It is the time for floods, storms, etc. in China mainland. The most negative changes (< -10%) in history are recorded in October (2 times), December (2 times), and March (1 time).

There are lags between price and electricity cost estimates (I did not look at their methodology).

4025  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Daily Blockdata Dashboard on: December 23, 2020, 02:22:40 AM
It is good to see you develop your website very well, congratulations.

I have my small contribution for that page, specifically the pie chart for the mining pools. Currently, you use a pie chart for it but its size is too large and it has not been displayed well. You could adjust the size smaller a bit.

However, I suggest you to use bar chart (horizontally) due to 2 advantages at least:
  • Human eyes are more easily to assess and realize differences in the vertical or horizontal line. More easily than when we have to compare (by eyes) differences in arcs or angles.
  • The second advantage is to help you better show labels of mining pools.
  • To make the proposal is not from my subjective opinion, I searched and here you go with the article that presents some disadvantages of pie chart: How to Choose Between a Bar Chart and Pie Chart
  • Horizontal bar chart is better than vertical bar chart if you have too many sub-groups need to be displayed on the chart with their label names

Example with a chart is taken from there Top-10 mining pools on bitcoin network over years (2009 - May 2020)
4026  Economy / Speculation / Re: 2021 Bitcoin Cycle(Bullrun) vs 2017 Bitcoin Cycle(Bullrun) on: December 23, 2020, 01:56:33 AM
Things are easier if we have charts to compare so here you go with charts for daily price and volume in 3 years: 2016, 2017 and 2020.

  • It seems price movements in 2020 is faster (move ahead of time) than in 2016. In 2016, the crash happens in August but in 2020, it happens in March. The common reaction is after the crash as final weak-down, price intensively moves upward.
  • Chart for 2020 volume looks more similar to 2016 volume, not 2017 volume.
  • I used multipliers (for price and volume in 2016) to make charts more visually comparable
4027  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Morgan Stanley says "betting on bitcoin is harmful to the U.S. dollar" on: December 22, 2020, 02:31:58 PM
Could be both to be honest. As more and more people bet on bitcoin(through buying, using, and holding), we could probably say that Bitcoin is "harming" the US Dollar by slowly but surely taking away some of it's market share. "Harming" might be too exaggerated of a word to use especially in the short term, but yea.
Two charts are public disclosures that why Bitcoin has dominated U.S. dollar. They will survive together in the world but bitcoin will dominate US. dollar.

  • Here: https://loyce.club/seclog/seclog.txt
  • In median: for 3 years (2018, 2019 and 2020) there are 177 wokeup accounts each day with the 50% of observed days have from 0 to 227 woke up accounts. If narrows down the window to 2019 and 2020, there are 208 wokeup accounts each day with the 50% of observed days have from 173 to 253 woke up accounts
  • All time high is at 5716, on 13 May 2019
  • I did not check prospectively but I recalled the Yobit campaign was run in middle months of 2019 so the all time high of wokeup probably was triggered by that spam campaign

That's ridiculously large text my man.  We can understand in normal sized English.
I guess OP does not know options to adjust size of images that are too large now so that the images and texts inside don't dominate the texts OP wrote. Hence, OP used large fonts for his own texts. Also, highlights with red, blue colors simultaneously with large fonts is bad practice.

Adjust the size with width=200 then OP will be able to normalize his text size. With the width size, you can combine up to 5 images in a single row.  Wink

4030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Nigeria is now the No.2 bitcoin market on: December 21, 2020, 02:17:59 PM
It can be true if you say about P2P marketplaces but can be inaccurate if you are saying about bitcoin market (not restrict to P2P marketplaces).

The screenshot is from the article and figures are for last 5 days volume.

There are stats for monthly volume (from a third party provider so the accuracy is unknown). Lots of things change in the last 5 days but the statistics for October (USD equivalent) shows same ranks for top 3 nations: USA, Nigeria, and China with volume in October are $81.13 million, $16.61 million and $14.45 million of dollar, respectively.

You can check it out there: usefultulips.org. My given charts are in monthy. The default window is weekly so you have to customize it. You can get stats for combined volume from Paxful and LocalBicoins or each of these.
4031  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Streaks (Rise/ Fall) - 2013 to 2020 on: December 21, 2020, 01:12:06 PM
Eventually, the crazy rise streak from 12 Dec 2020 ended yesterday on 20 Dec 2020. It makes the last rise streak in 2020 has its duration is 8 days, from 12 Dec 2020 to 19 Dec 2020.

In the streak, the price moves from $18051.32 to $23869.83 with the percent of increase is at 32.23%. It is not a highest rise streak in history of bitcoin but still amazing. I hope you enjoyed the streak in the last 2 weeks.

Bitcoin price history -- most profitable and bloodiest months, days. Check the thread to see how volatile the December is for bitcoin (in most profitable and bloodiest days).

The box plot shows December is not the most volatile month (because the outliers - Red circes are for August and November) but still is one of the most volatile (because its box that represents the interquartile range = p75 - p25 is one of the most widest months). Details are there

Update
I update the sheet with a chronological table for all streaks (rise and fall)

With total 75 streaks and 74 timegap values, the median of time gap is 26 days and the interquartile range is 10 days to 46 days. It means 50% of 2 consecutive streaks occur around 26 days. How wide or narrow around the median? 50% of 74 streaks have timegaps fluctuate around 10 days to 46 days.

How about longevity of streaks?
  • 50% of 75 streaks have the longevity range from 5 to 6 days (same values for Rise streaks and Fall streaks)
  • The longest rise streak lasts for 13 days and the longest fall streak lasts for 12 days.

Code:
    variable |         N      mean        sd       p50       p25       p75       min       max
-------------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     timegap |      74.0      32.0      28.2      26.0      10.0      46.0       1.0     125.0

Three months with highest streak counts are October (11 streaks), November (9 streaks) and March (7 streaks). The sample size is small for each calendar month so values for following parameters are only for future reference (iqr, p25, p75, median, min and max of timegap).

Am a trader as well and also a marketer, but 80% of my works I do then with mobile phone.
Am always on the road, mobile phone is very flexible to move around with, I may be in the market, worship center, school etc....
You can't take your computer around with you on every place you go, we now have power mobile gadgets that can do almost 80% of the work your computer do, the only difference is the resolution.
With mobile devices that are easier to do your works as you said but which works do you plan to do with your mobile devices? (You don't need to answer me because it is your privacy and private purposes).

As I discussed above, with mobile, typing is always inconvenient and annoying, time-wasting. So for any app, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Slack, it is always worse when you work on mobile. If you need a mobile app to quote, share, make multiple posts, it is not good for the forum (as spam advertisement). Make multiple posts in multiple boards break rules.
4033  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: High transaction Fees in blockchain on: December 21, 2020, 06:44:37 AM
There are suggestion that exchange wallet services could be taking a commission from the fees, but I cannot confirm this.
No public evidence to confirm it but if you have interests in, you can follow it up. You need to record the suggested fee (on the same chain of each cryptocurrency) in different times: when the transaction fee on the network is low; and when the transaction fee on the network is high.

Compares the fee suggested by the exchange you are using. If it is a big diffeerence and repeats many times, you can have unofficial evidence that the specific exchange suggests a fixed withdrawal fee rates (includes their service fee and transaction fee) to get commissions for themselves.

I meant compares the fees between Normal and Expensive periods on the network and the suggested or minimum withdrawal fee on the companies at the same time. Make some repetitions of comparison and see. (with bitcoin transaction, you can collect the data on Wednesday and Sunday, follow it up about 1 or 2 months to have enough sample size. I choose 2 days because usually they are most crowded and empty day on the bitcoin network)

Afaik, companies tend to use a fixed or static fee rates when you submit your withdrawal (and you must withdraw the amount higher than that min threshold).

Reminder
  • Do it for yourself and don't publish it if you are not anonymous. It relates to exchanges and you can be attacked. Remember the report on fake/ wash volume and serious attacks after that.

Before jump into the content, I hope you are doing well and enjoying the crazy bull run of bitcoin.

Bitcoin is volatile and it rises or falls in small or big changes over time. This thread is published to give information about Bitcoin streaks. The term of streak is familiar with gamblers but for non-gamblers and non-native English speakers, you might confuse about it. Let's me explain a bit.

Streak means something happen in-a-row, continuously. It can be win / loss, rise/ fall. The alternative term can be spell. It is a language term and you can choose one that fits you, just understand the meaning of streak I use here.

Definitions
  • Rise streaks: a streak when % change between close price and open price is Positive (>0) for at least 5 days in-a-row.
  • Fall streaks: a streak when % change between close price and open price is Negative (<0) for at least 5 days in-a-row.
  • Generally, streaks here are 5+-days streaks (positive or negative).

We are enjoying the crazy bull run so let's get started with Rise streaks.

Fall Streaks

2014 is the most terrible years according to total fall streaks (9). For rest years, there is no significant difference when the values range from 3 to 1. If you notice, total fall streaks each year (in bull or bear market, tend to be less than total Rise streaks). Amazing right?

but the platform is not as flexible as it ought to!
What do you mean by 'flexible'?

Quote
Most person find it difficult to find their way around after creating an account and this has led some persons abandoning their accounts after creating it.
It is very easy to create your account. Could you describe more on the difficulty or challenge you got when you create your account, please.

For quick accessibility and flexibility for users, won't it be better to have Bitcointalk Mobile and desktop App?
Looking at the fact that it's easier to use a mobile app compared to a webpage.
Desktop app will be used on desktop, laptop so it does not make big difference. Furthermore, the forum works good on web browser even with Tor browser.

Mobile app:
  • It can bring you an early impression that you can bring it everywhere but it is a tip of the iceberg.
  • In fact, the forum is a text-based forum, for discussions so that mobile app won't help to bring convenience when you are typing. It is much more easily to type with desktop or laptop. I know you can argue that with mobile devices, you can connect it with key board but please why do we need to bring key board to use mobile app?

What do you think about having a mobile app for bitcointalk?
No need for, IMO.

The forum has its version for mobile. Reminder: it is broken for tables.
4037  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin transaction fees (in sats/kb). Sunday, Saturday are best to move BTC on: December 20, 2020, 03:20:43 AM
It was finally confirmed. For future reference, how much size is safe to get transaction confirmed within a few hours?
No one can give you an exact answers for all situations. it depends on mempool conditions that changes very fastly.

Check mempool condition there: jochen-hoenicke.de
One hour means about 6 blocks and with that third chart, one block takes 1 MB (maximum from tip of the mempool). So one waiting hour will be roughtly 6 MB from tip of the mempool. It is applied for constant condition of the mempool. In reality, it is changing and what you can get is an estimation only.

As said, because of uncertainty of mempool, you always have to prepare for bad situations by turn on the RBF -- Replace-by-Fee for your transactions.

As of writing, 10:20 PM UTC time, 6 MB from tip of the mempool will be for the rate of 5 sat/ byte but not all waiting transactions at 5 sat/ vbyte will be confirmed all after next 6 blocks (even if mempool stays flat next one hour). Total size of waiting transactions with 5+ sat / vbyte is 8.615 MB.

Summary bar graphs (I skipped senders who sent 1 50-merit bomb, the chart is for senders with 2+ bomb)
  • Less bombs over years.
  • Reasons could be: airdropped merits were all used and abused by members who wanted to abuse. Some frequent bombers left the forum (like TMAN). No big contest like the Art contest for 10 year anniversary of the forum -- in that period, theymos bombed a lot.
