4021  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who do you think should be the fool to buy Bitcoin from you for 1000$+? on: December 10, 2014, 09:16:19 PM
first good answer and shows merchant adoption is actually still good for something. Well, maybe there is hope if the merchants are stupid enough to accept bitcoin as volatile as it is.
The businesses I have helped LOVE bitcoin now. There is no reason to face any price swings. You could use a payment processor and give up 1% for the service. That's better than the 3% you give up to a credit card. Bitcoin also allows some businesses to capture new markets. Look at this place I know.
http://centraltexasgunworks.com/

They were just another tiny gun store in Texas. They had a website, but no traffic. Then they began taking bitcoin and their online business exploded. The website you see was paid for by profits from bitcoin and they are now primarily an online store. Eventually there will be a lot of online gun shops and they will be back to competing on price, but since they went first they have revenue from people who would have never heard of them.

You can call them stupid if you want. But they are crushing it in bitcoin sales.
4022  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Where can I buy my first Bitcoin? on: December 10, 2014, 09:04:00 PM
I think a place like coinbase is a good choice to start with. It is a little bit of a hassle to set up and fund the account. But it is less hassle than avoiding scammers in some convoluted system.
You should look into how to secure your private keys for larger amounts and the security implications of online wallets. Online wallets are great for the convenience of spending from a phone but require trusting the host.
Accepting bitcoin can be much easier than credit cards or checks. You only need to show the customer your receiving address. There is no need to be concerned about identity like a card. Who cares who they are? Once the bitcoin is sent it is irreversible and you have been paid. Again, unlike a credit card which takes days to process.

Your business could also choose to have a payment processor, like BitPay, handle your transactions. They allow you to take bitcoin without facing any of the volatility. At the end of each day they deposit dollars into your bank account.

It's not the guy I thought. He did not run an exchange, he had a few buyers to work with directly. But his mine was impressive when I saw it a few years back.
I'm in northern Illinois (quite a bit north of the Bloomington-Normal area where this guy was from)...
OMG, I wonder if it's you? Danny, I'm going to PM you initials of the person I'm thinking of. If it's you, ...well hey bud!

No. It's not me.  I know who you're talking about though.

I thought I knew who most of the bigger players are here in the northern Illinois area, but I didn't know this John D Powell.

By the way, my initials (in case it isn't obvious) are D.H.
Ah, well in that case; are you Satoshi Nakamoto?  Cheesy

Oh $#!T, I think I know who that is.  Undecided

I'm certain he would not want me to name him, but I know a guy in that area with a sick mine. If it is who I think, there could be more to this story than a mine.

It says he was running an exchange.

4025  Economy / Speculation / Re: Let's discuss the mantras of the permabulls on: December 10, 2014, 08:18:27 PM
I've got one. "There is no faster, cheaper, or safer way to pay anyone on Earth."

It's funny I'm considered a perma-bull. I make most of my money on the crashes. Frankly, I'm a bear in terms of my trading strategy. I do however believe that future prices will go higher on the long horizon. I also think downward pressure on price is a good thing. Even if it is from misplaced fear.

Here's one for you: "This user is currently ignored".  ...

Hahah Cheesy

4027  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin taxation ?? on: December 10, 2014, 07:08:28 PM
There was never a time when bitcoin was tax free. Indeed there is no such thing in the U.S. as tax free capitol gains.

4032  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: December 10, 2014, 06:42:06 PM

Evidence for God includes:
1. The complexity of the universe combined with the entropy that exists therein;
2. The fact that there isn't any pure random, rather everything exists through cause and effect;
3. And the fact that many millions have experienced the Spirit of God in their hearts.
Put these together. Investigate and think about them deeply. You will see that God is not simply a man in the sky.

The blood God has on His hands is the blood of His Son, Jesus, Who shed His blood on the cross, willingly, so that mankind has the opportunity to be saved from eternal entropy. God is as He is called, God. Because of what He made people to be, this was the only way to save any of them when they condemned themselves. He can do it because He is God. Even the blood on His hands is righteous.

When are you going to look at these things in detail so that you stop condemning yourself?

Smiley
Since I am an Athiest, I am not looking for converts and I think you should be able to think what you want. By If that is a list of reasons God must exist then it's a very weak case indeed.
1. I don't understand the world - So there must be a God.
2. There is no randomness - So there must be a God.  Huh
3. Other people believe in God -So there must be a God.
How come this only applies to the God you happen to believe in?
But anyway, believe what you want. Only you should decide that.

4033  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: December 10, 2014, 06:24:22 PM
All of this would be much easier if there were a God. Then she could tell us who is right. But since these are actually ideas of men, it always comes down to my invisible sky man is better than your invisible sky man. No one has more blood on his hands than God.

There is also the issue of where these stories come from. Most of the old testament is taken from Sumerian mythology. Noah and the ark is a plagiarized version of  Gilgimesh. Even new testament characters are centuries older than Jesus. Jesus himself is patterned on earlier Gods like Mythra and Ra.
The Bible is not Christian, it's much older than that. Christianity evolved from these earlier religions in a process that continues today. It is also the same for Islam and they are close relatives on the evolutionary tree of mythology.
4034  Other / Meta / Who's on your Perma-troll ignore list? on: December 10, 2014, 05:26:28 PM
I personally like to hear outsider opinions. However many of our resident trolls seem to be unteachable and it's boring to watch them make a fool of themselves daily. So I am now ignoring perma-trolls and thought I would share / trade user names.

Please list any "trolls" you see. Everyone can make their own choice about who is a troll. My benchmark is those who basically only post their "theories" or illiterate ideas about bitcoins failings. I have heard them all before and know why they are misunderstandings of Satoshi's system.
I'm certain that if a real problem with bitcoin arises the rational users here will identify it. The only thing I will be missing is FUD.

My troll list:
Fallling
Decksperiment
Phinnaeus Gage
Bitcoin ShitList
justmyname
Sevvero
NotLambchop
fewcoins

EDIT: smalltimer ,lol

4035  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you think Bitcoin ATM's will become the norm? on: December 10, 2014, 05:05:22 PM
I think as soon as the laws are clear, there will be an explosion of BTC/ATMs. Even if it costs a little more I would use one. They are especially helpful at airports and borders when you are trying to dump fiat. But I can see all sorts of use cases. For example, supose you own an amusement park. Instead of ticket booths for rides you could purchase some coins for your phone or rent a trezor while your there. At each ride you just do a spend while in line. A type of closed economy.
4036  Other / Off-topic / Re: US Government Secretly holds cannabis patent on: December 10, 2014, 04:54:04 PM
Why do you say 'secretly' when the information is publicly available?

https://www.google.com/patents/US6630507

Traffic.  Cheesy
It's always gota be a grand conspiracy. I did not read the patent, but I'm sure it does not say that the government has a patent on medical use of MJ. I suspect it is a patent on a specific technique or method. Perhaps one they developed.
4037  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who do you think should be the fool to buy Bitcoin from you for 1000$+? on: December 10, 2014, 04:50:13 PM
Considering the explosive growth in price. One day we may all wish we could buy a whole bitcoin for only $1k. I am not aware of anything that has experienced as much growth.

4038  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate islam? on: December 10, 2014, 04:37:34 PM
I think if you guys spent some time in the middle east you would be shocked. Shocked at just how boring and familiar everything is. Most Muslims don't know any jihadists and are as distant from that stuff as you are from Timothy McVeigh.

They are interested in their kids, good food, and chasing money. Even their religion is basically the same as Christianity. They worship the same God of Abraham and the same stories borrowed from earlier religions.  They do tend to take religion a little more seriously than westerners and actually practice following "God's laws". Most westerners just pick and choose a few of God's laws that they are willing to obey. It's clearly sinning, but nobody likes to think of themselves as a tool of the devil, so they just pretend it's ok.
4039  Economy / Speculation / Re: FAKE BITCOINS on: December 10, 2014, 03:37:55 PM
Sadly, it's time to add fewcoins to the ignore list. I kinda liked reading his funny theories, but since it's always the same the sparkle is wearing off.
4040  Economy / Speculation / Re: permabulls not only lost the control over this section-in fact they are extinct on: December 10, 2014, 03:01:58 PM
Another permabull, checking in. Still entirely in bitcoin, still living almost exclusively on it since June of 2013, still using it to buy all my groceries and stuff, and still converting all the cash I get into bitcoin.

Bitcoin fundamentals haven't changed. It's still better, faster, and more convenient than dollars or credit cards. Dollar, Euro, and Yuan fundamentals, on the other hand, are continuing to change, for the worse. So  Tongue

Not at the moment, hopefully that will change over the next few years

Have you ever paid for something in person with bitcoins?

Sooo easy
It sure is. The restaurant near my house has a QR code at the register. Just point-click-paid.
