4081  Economy / Speculation / Re: After Weeks of Price Stagnation, BTC Price Seems to be Moving Up on: July 18, 2016, 01:08:32 PM
There is failed coup in Turkey, although it failed, it is quite amazing a large number of officers from Army/Navy got arrested. It is predicted more chaos next few days, asset like gold, bitcoin doing well in that environment.

Unless banks are threatened (money confiscated or capital controls), it won't produce a rush into bitcoin. More like a rush into dollars instead.
4082  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin payments processor Bitnet in talks to sell IP to Rakuten on: July 18, 2016, 12:27:32 PM
http://siliconangle.com/blog/2016/07/18/report-enterprise-bitcoin-payments-processor-bitnet-in-talks-to-sell-ip-to-rakuten/

Quote
Enterprise bitcoin payments processor Bitnet Technologies Ltd. looks set to be possibly leaving the bitcoin payment industry with a report that it is in the process of selling its intellectual property assets to Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, Inc.

The Wall Street Journal claims to have seen a memo related to the deal and that Rakuten is considering using Bitnet’s assets to continue testing and developing blockchain technologies.

Of note, Rakuten currently uses Bitnet to accept bitcoin payments across its e-commerce platforms and holds a minority stake in the company through a previous investment.

Founded in 2013, Bitnet provides a digital commerce platform that allows enterprise-scale merchants to accept bitcoin payments.

In addition to offering payment solutions, the company also offers a variety of other services, including blockchain digital asset management, blockchain consulting, and B2B cross-border remittances.
4083  Economy / Economics / Re: How good are you at managing your money on: July 18, 2016, 11:14:38 AM
The only advice I'd give people is don't have any debt, and have savings of about 6 months expenses. Apart from that, you can spend as you like - just don't get overdrawn, and remember that those who accrue wealth do so because they have no debts and they have capital to take advantage of various opportunities.
4084  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The DAO Disaster Illustrates Differing Philosophies in Bitcoin and Ethereum on: July 18, 2016, 10:05:15 AM
Well the point about alts is to experiment with new things. Ether tried the whole "contract in the code" thing and found it didn't really work when there are flaws in both the contract and the code. A valuable lesson learned by everyone.

My account was in the first round of hacking - but looking at it, it looks fine. I just can't log in with my master key.

From what I understand, someone posted a page with an XSS exploit - and anyone who browsed that page became compromised. My account got frozen on Friday (the first round). So I think I'm OK if only I could figure a way to get back in.

I think they are doing a hard fork at 15:00 UTC today and hopefully that resolves things.

Try after the fork, and there will probably be more announcements, but as I understand it at this point, you need to contact steemit support and they will help you recover the account.

They're not responding to emails, but I think that might be because they are inundated. Hopefully they'll allow access via Reddit after the fork.

Well the hard fork came and went, but I still can't log in. This is Day 4 of these shenanigans. Not good.

some accounts did not change their passwords, besides the billion warnings posted all day. the hacker cleaned those leftovers today.
steemit.com is now in maintenance mode

Both those sites have been hacked in the past, and am not even sure that Vircurex maintains it's wallets anymore.

Question regarding the hack. On the following article:

https://steemit.com/steemit/@steemit3/first-update-to-july-14-security-announcement-from-steemit-ceo-ned-scott

Ned mentions that we can log in using our reddit accounts. Here is what he says:

Quote
Within the next 48 hours, Steemit will begin to allow all newly secured accounts to reset their passwords simply by logging in with the same Facebook or Reddit credentials that were used to register in the first place. This easy process will work for the vast majority of the potentially compromised accounts. All of these account holders will regain full access to their funds and their original account name.

I'm probably being completely dense but HOW are we to do this?

I tried putting in my reddit password into the login but it didn't work (because my reddit password has less than 16 chars). I went to the create account link, linked to reddit, and gave steemit permission to access my reddit - but all it said was "you already have an account" - which I knew anyway - it wouldn't let me get any further, just linked to the login page which didn't work with either my steemit password or my reddit password - the question is HOW do we use reddit to access our compromised accounts and secure them?

Can someone explain?

P.S. I am @alyssas on steemit

bumping this question - anyone have any idea just how to retrieve the account with reddit?
4090  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Steemit.com: Blogging is the new Mining on: July 15, 2016, 02:11:04 PM
Does anybody know what type of passwords were affected? Was it weak or short passwords, or is it irrelevant due to a different attack vector?

All the passwords had to be 16 char, with numbers, so they were all strong. Still no idea about how to get into my account with reddit. It won't accept my reddit password or my steemit 16 char password. And looking at my account in read only mode it hasn't been compromised at all, so not sure what the problem is.

4092  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Best argument against European Union: barroso now working for Goldman Sachs... on: July 10, 2016, 04:30:26 PM
Both Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan donated money to the Remain campaign - and since the Brexit vote, both have been pumping out propaganda, sorry, reports about how bad Brexit will be, to panic the government into reversing it. I guess they really benefit from all the EU's tax dodging laws.
4093  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Halving did its first effect on mining websites on: July 10, 2016, 04:27:49 PM
Well... this was expected, wasn't it? Now the real drama begins, let's just hope that there would be some more advanced hardware than before (as I don't think that they would be profitable now) to tackle off some profit.

Bitcoin value is either gonna go very up or very down pretty soon, time to purchase some pop-corns to observe it's stats.

Yes. I think somehow the miners thought the price would go up, but I think it's gone as far as it could and nothing much is going to happen for the next few months unless there is some economic disaster somewhere.
4094  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The destruction of the UK has started on: July 07, 2016, 01:57:32 PM

Am I the only one here to notice that the british currency and british shares are down? Substantially down!

The geniuses in the markets failed to predict Brexit and failed to price it in. Now they're panicking. The falling pound is great for any UK exporters of goods and services.

And pension funds have reported they're doing great too as they diversified outside the UK, and now all the dividends coming in from their foreign stocks are buying more pounds (the funds liabilities are all in sterling).
4095  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EU proposes stricter rules on Bitcoin on: July 05, 2016, 06:56:29 PM
from the article. all i can see is how prepaid debit cards would be affected by the changes of the EU..

Lots of bitcoin services are linked to pre-paid cards to allow people to load their cards with bitcoin and spend. Xapo, and Coinbase cards come to mind. This EU development is designed to nix that.
4096  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EU proposes stricter rules on Bitcoin on: July 05, 2016, 06:25:05 PM
I'm so glad Britain has voted to leave! We're not going to be subject to this idiocy any more.
I was going to write the same.
London and the UK will still continue to be the best hub for innovation if this is what the European Union wants to do.

The UK is going to turn into the EU's worst nightmare - a giant free wheeling innovative centre on their doorstep!

4098  Other / Politics & Society / Re: FREXIT IS A GO! VOTING STARTS 1/9/16! on: July 05, 2016, 04:52:36 PM
While I'd love to see Frexit, it will only happen if Brexit is seen to be successful.

At the moment the elites seem determined to spread panic to ensure markets fall, people stop spending, all to generate a recession and make Brexit a failure.

This is going to be an epic battle.
4099  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why hasn't the EU got a common language? on: July 04, 2016, 03:41:19 PM
Ah! The Mayflower. There have been so many Brexits. Smiley

The amusing thing is that the American puritans came back to Britain during the English Civil War to help Cromwell - they helped turn a few of the battles too.
4100  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Skills vs Luck *poll* on: July 04, 2016, 02:14:09 PM
If you take care of risk management  - not wagering too much on each trade, and doing due diligence and diversifying, then you can ride out luck both good and bad.

All my losses to date have been due to exchanges going bust/theowner of exchange running away with the coins. So nothing to do with skills, and everything to do with bad luck. Though it helped that I practiced risk management and spread my money across a lot of exchanges and didn't hold more on an exchange than I needed to - that's the only reason I haven't been completely wiped out by the scams - risk management.
