yes the key is proper cold.    not too cold  -5 to +5c     or 23f to 40f   good psu  high fan and boom 1700gh is yours.

So who keeps their home that cold?  This is suppose to be a 'home' miner.  I'm looking forward to receiving mine in the next couple of days.  I knew about the loudness of the fan, but didn't realize it doesn't reach the stated speed under 'normal' conditions.  We don't even keep our server rooms lower than 65f.

Oh well, live and learn.  I'll compare them to the S5s when they arrive and decide from there based on $/gh & j/gh what my end of year purchases will be.  Right now, the S5 is leading on the 'expected' $/gh for home mining.

well many of us have said it is not really a 1700 gh miner
40802  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S5: The New Standard, 0.51J/G, 1155GH, Jan 8th shipping [Sales Open] on: December 29, 2014, 05:53:36 PM
Just curious how many S5's you guys are running at home.  I miss mining- sold my S3's after 2 months.  The difficulty to power cost just seemed too far off.  Since you can just buy btc now for cheap.  But dammit I miss running my machines.

what does power cost you? at 15 cents a k-watt   or more and there is no good choice

...

curious what you pay for power. I understand the aspect of clocking hardware to its limit if its profitable, but if you need to make >$10 in modifications to gain 50GH/60W per unit, plus have slightly more PSUs/TH it could be more practical to buy an extra SP20 for that extra 1.65TH/$500. If its a hobby to do modifications though thats another story Smiley

this is what I did 9 sp20E's   and 1 s-5 all underclocked a lot works best for me. and I have to tear the whole thing down in may as my rates go to summer price of 16 cents.

In the cold wither I pay 13 cents but I get a lot of heat which lowers my  13 cents to 10 cents.

So extra units with  underclock works best for me.

40805  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Bitminter bitcoin mining pool - Pays TxFees, Merged Mining, Fair PPLNS rewards on: December 29, 2014, 05:32:41 PM
well little guys find it tough to wait for a block.
and if you moved up a bit to  1 or 2 th it was costly.
I think the euro miners are just quitting due to power cost.
My in house setup maxes at 4-6k in the winter and about 2 k in the summer.

Even with 9 sp20E's and 1 s-5 I can only run them under clocked. I can do 12th and that does not earn 1btc a week if a pool is a bit unlucky.

power cost for me is 565 usd a month 4 coins = 1265 so I am clearing 700 a month if I get average luck.

Very tough to mine if your power is 15 cents  a kwatt or more.

My s5 arrived this morning just as i was going out (wife and i at hotel for a couple of days) so i haven't had chance to unpack the box yet. I'll do as full a review as i can and set up some pictures for all your viewing pleasure when i get home on 31st.
Thanks Bitmain!

I am sitting typing this and watching sons of anarchy on netflix.  the miner is on the truck.  If I am lucky the show ends in 90 minutes and the miner comes right after it.
40807  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will the difficulty go down again ? on: December 29, 2014, 04:21:20 PM
According to https://alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator

Next difficulty retarget occurs at block 336671.0 (eta 1.1 days): 40554014444.1 / +2.8% [est.]

According to https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

Estimated Next Difficulty:   40,636,150,150 (+2.99%)

Adjust time:   After 174 Blocks, About 1.1 days

Why is the difference in stat ?

3 or 4 ways can be used to predict the number.
some sites use previous 1000+  blocks
some use previous 500 + blocks
some use every block since the last adjustment about 1950 as of now

http://www.bitcoincharts.com/

as of this post this site says new diff will be 40,186,743,801   you can be safe to say 40.1 to 40.9 will be it next time.

I sent mmpool a trust rating this is the second one I sent.
I would mention to any bigger player when we hit a block some of us get .5 btc or more and mmpool has paid us everytime.
He should get some trusts from us.

he has paid me more the 11btc since 9-11-2014 this shows last 5 payments

40810  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: Paypal Group Buy - Antminer S5 (USA Customer Only) $480 includes Shipping on: December 29, 2014, 01:34:31 PM
I would also bring up as a long time buyer-seller on paypal. (2003)   Many people get discounts from paypal.

I get a standing 2% minimum discount that does not affect the seller's bottom line.

So that 480 paypal price  now = 480 - 9.60  or 471.40.  Once I get my s-5 today I may do a paypal buy for 1 more. So if btc changes and shoots up I

paid in cash.

I also belong to square trade and as amazing as it sounds I most likely could get a 2 or 3 year warranty on this item for 30 or 40 usd more.

Not sure I want to do that but it is a possible option.
40811  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Dec 17 to Dec 29th diff thread (-0.32%) to (-0.12%) on: December 29, 2014, 01:14:49 PM
Well with a day to go we are near 4% so lets say we end at 40.7 diff.

Diff was 39.6 on Nov 5th  How many of us would think that from Nov 5th to Jan 12th  diff would go from 39.6 to 40.7.

I use Jan 12th Since diff will be the same from Dec 30th to Jan 12th.  This would be a 68 day time period in which we have had an increas off about

2.77 %.

So Jan 12 to March 9 is 68 days.  and 40.7 x 1.0277 = diff at 41.8 up to march 9th.  I don't think so but it would make for a very interesting winter.
40812  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Spondoolies Tech SP20 Succesor ? on: December 29, 2014, 03:51:45 AM
I heard they were going to go comercial hosting only ie box with blades 10 blades to a box each blade 10k or some such

in other words the RUMOR I HEARD is they are getting OUT of units for home use and kinda sorta hosting sold units to commercial firms and or rates
*ie stuff that needs to be hosted* due to power and cooling requirements

(probably wrong but what I heard)

bums me out the only trustworthy bunch out there in the world imho

wanted an SP20 but at 1200w with a Titan now and 100 amp service etc just can't make the $$$ fly with the numbers
of btc made

so it goes

dude why on earth do you think it uses 1200 watts.

if you just clock it to 1275 you will be at 700 watts.

forgetting your power supply limits for 1 minute .

1200  watts high clock does   1650gh
700   watts low clock does     1275gh
470   watts  lower clock does 1025gh
400   watts  lowest clock does 900gh

the  record low  is here  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=896161.msg9953144#msg9953144

Just going by the specs that spondoolies posted on their site (see tech section below page 1200 watts)

http://www.spondoolies-tech.com/products/holiday-special-sp20-jackson-shipping-from-stock

but yeah your above points are good to know indeed

I wish they would have listed it as 1450 stock and overclock to 1550-1700.

this page warms the cockles of my old heart   Smiley good to see BMT and SP-T discussing things and acting together.

Yes, it's good for the community to have at least 2 decent manufacturers.

sadly, that's it. We don't have any more honest outfits out there. I have mad respect for both of them for making quality products and providing good support. My interactions have always been professional and pleasant with them. Kudos to both of you. Smiley

I see the two of them   head and shoulders above  them all the other builders.

1. No.
2. How is that relevant?

he quoted my post in which I refer to his server runs this pool.

Frankly I don't know if he is just kidding.

Space saver for review

here it is mining  freq 300 downclock
vs 350 stock power used is 487 at kwatt meter
it is loud 67 db

now 487/944 at the meter is  .515 watts per gh

Unboxing

box is shorter then s-3  as it comes with 1 fan

same type of foam with a bubble wrap bag

40818  Bitcoin / Hardware / S-5 review. It has arrived some info is in! on: December 29, 2014, 03:08:20 AM
It is here!!  It works !! yeah

It auto seeks an empty ip address just like the sp20.

IT IS TOO LOUD WITH STOCK FAN AND STOCK FREQ OF 350

If you run stock fan at stock freq it is over 75db and is a nasty sounding 75db.

So a sound proof room and ear plugs are needed. My ears rang from the sound after I turned off the miner at stock speeds and using stock fan. (the fan is pictured here)

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=907219.msg9980310#msg9980310

if your s-5 comes with this fan you will almost certainly want to remove it and find a better fan or two fans.

That said I like other parts of the miner

Well with more test and going to freq 356 I get  1197 gh at 588 watts = .49 watts per gh   this is making the s-5 look a lot better.

I will keep the miner at freq 356 for 4 hours to see if it is stable at 1197gh/588 watts and very few hw's

This may make me think it is better then the sp20 if it continues to scale well as I crank up freq.

1) I got it to do 1156gh at stock speed---freq 350
2) uses 581 watts  at stock speed ------freq 350
3) that is .502 watts per gh
4) auto seeks an ip so if you have a 192.168.x.xxx router it should find an address easy
5) once fan modded sound is okay at freq 350
6) temps are 64 and 58 c  I think this is okay my room temp is 28c
7) gui has huge choice of freq from 100 to 500 in steps of 6.25 or 16 per every 100 total of 64 in all
8 ) new miner interface that allows you to see all your miners  use miner config then miner link

So that is 8 good things.

The bad

1) loud loud loud and since I am 57 higher pitched sound is nastier then lower so the stock fan  running at 3600 or 3800 rpm  hurt my ears.
2) it is an s-1 not an s-3 case.
3) the black sides are plastic
4) no top or bottom
5) stacking is not easy due to plastic sides
6) my s-5 does not like to do more then 1200gh others have had the s-5 do 1300gh------- this may be the fan mod

Would I buy this at 455 for 1 shipped to my home over a sp20e for 500 shipped to my home
some will say use 2  not 1 miner to price compare
2 s-5's to usa NJ with shipping = 899
2 sp20's to usa NJ with shipping = 1000

well I need to add 54 for new fans so  899 + 54 = 953 s-5 vs 1000 sp20  at this price point the sp20 wins
if I make a big set up 10 or more in my house the sp20 wins due to ease to stack.
some people have setups of long none stacked miners  then it is a tie sp20e vs s-5

If I paid 800 for 2 s-5's shipped to my home and did a fan fix for 54 bucks I would be at 854 usd vs 1000 usd.  for a small setup I would say the s-5 is better in this case.

These are very close to the sp20 if they cost a little less and if you add a fan mod.

These are very close to the sp20 if you are able to manage sound in an isolated area.

These are very close to the sp20 if you want under 5  or if you do not need to stack them.

These would best the sp20 for value if the price drops more say 2 for 800 shipped to the usa vs 2 for 900 as they are now.

More tests later today.

I was offered to do this review with a free s-5 from bitmaintech warranty  at zero cost to me. Which was nice of them>
They gave me no rules to follow they did not ask for a gentle review or please ignore problems.

But here is the deal I set a few standards for me.
1)Try to be honest and fair.
 2) Ask myself this question   would I want to buy or sell to a person exactly like me?

My goal is do a good honest review on this thread.

I did a fan mod for 1 sp20.

I pulled the fan out completely and added a silverstone to the external end of the miner.

Are you sticking with a Pull configuration? Have you tried switching to Push, or Push+Pull?

pull and while it is quiet it is not quite correct.

 next will be push- pull
40820  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Unofficial Spondoolies SP20 thread on: December 29, 2014, 12:03:15 AM
I did a fan mod for 1 sp20.

I pulled the fan out completely and added a silverstone to the external end of the miner.  this is the fan

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A460TK6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it allows sound to drop to 60db and run about 1150 vs 1000

I can hash at 1158gh

all temps are good

I tried that fan too, a lot of air gets lost in the gaps, thought maybe using tape to black out the gaps where it overhangs the side of the case.

Thing is, what I have been trying to do is find a fan that lets me run at max TH, as good cooling but with a lot less noise than the stock fan. Its proving difficult to do Sad

yeah this has it quieter and at 1158.

the gap issue can be fixed by a piece of felt.

http://www.amazon.com/Waxman-length-Heavy-Strip-Brown/dp/B000SL29KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419811188&sr=8-1&keywords=felt+strip

I think if I find a correct push fan maybe this one

http://www.amazon.com/Bearing-NF-F12-iPPC-2000-PWM/dp/B00KFCR5BA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1419811286&sr=8-7&keywords=noctua+120+fan

I could do 1400 pretty quiet. this is not a big issue for me  but I love to tinker around.

I had these in the house----------after I put that felt on temps dropped on the 2 high ones from 115 to 110

closed two gaps one on each side

db is 60 but there is a lot of ambient noise the room is 52db due to all the fans in the garage.
