4141  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in 10 years, 9 years ago - from Theymos reddit AMA on: July 13, 2022, 10:49:04 AM
The send-to-email thing was really active in around that same year though? I remember people sending me Coinbase invite back when you didn't need to be a US citizen to sign up and it was through email. You'd just get a message saying hey you have $10 in BTC, and you already have a wallet, just use your email and create a password!

That didn't entice me then, 3 years later I opened my first wallet, and had been told by then all those email wallets aren't secure (rightly so).

I'm not saying that's good, by the way, I still feel using Bitcoin without the likes of Coinbase could be much, much easier. Actually, maybe it already is and I'm not aware?

Also, I think this is the cost of grid electricity. I know in my part of the world, for example, some miners want to experiment with natural gas generators. Far, far cheaper, no one would plug into the grid!

Are those natural gas generators actually safe to operate with the amount of power being drawn, without being a fire hazard?

[that is assuming that you've found a dry place outside to host it, as it is not safe to run a generator indoors, from what I have read.]

I've only seen one up close, but seen many models for sale only in Southeast Asia. China (duh) and Japan pretty much make hi-tech models, Japan buys gas from my island, actually we still produce way too much and it all gets burnt off (flaring), so demand still a long way off from supply.

They're always outside! Don't look much different from diesel generators, except you pipe in the gas from a separate canister unit (we don't have piped gas AFAIK in most of SEA).
4143  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Sportsbet.io's English Premier League Football Pool Discussion Thread on: July 13, 2022, 07:52:50 AM
Salah: a selfless player? Nah Mane believes otherwise; they had a collision earlier last season, and Mane claimed Salah was too selfish in games; Buwaytress can you attest to this? I didn't get the whole story, but I knew they were having problems.
I remember writing about that Mane/Salah relationship here on the forum in that season when they were both gunning for golden boot award. It really looked like they don't want to assist each other in some lower importance games or when result is already heavily in LFC favour.

When they played though important games it was not evident from TV coverage. So I say there was some bad blood there for sure, but nothing that really had impact on club results.

I've always said this about forwards: you do need to be selfish, at the right times. If you've watched enough games where you're getting 10 chances and they're trying to pass it into goal rather than just shoot, then you know how frustrating it can be. I loved Firmino because he was a foil, but if you play him alone, he's just trying to get everyone else to score instead of trying. That's where/why Salah and Mane were so good, they were selfish enough, and competitive.

So yes, the "downside" is you can get at each other, both trying to score. Anyone who plays also knows the frustration of seeing someone miss when the seemingly obvious option was you -- and that happened with Mane/Salah.

But it's the right kind of selfishness. The assists they both got speak for themselves, and btw, Mane/Salah assist-goal tally was the highest in the league for the 5 years they played together. Only Son/Kane got more in the last 2 seasons, but they operate as a front-two, whereas Mane/Salah are (usually) wingers.

Also, you should watch the AFCON scenes, Mane and Salah as victor/loser, that's where you see the true brotherhood. They had their bad times, as all brothers-in-arm do. I even seen Hendo get worked up with Trent, or with Fabinbo or Thiago, but I would never go so far as to say there was bad blood. In the end, it actually worked for the team rather than against.

Now Salah has all the possibilities to become Golden Boot of the Premier League running undisturbed from competition to score as many goals as he can.The team now without Mane will most probably be playing heavily to assist Salah and score goals to win the games. This is normal behavior from any team when you have a star player like Salah playing for you,Liverpool bypassed all limits and borders when offered him the new contract at 400.000 Pound weekly so I believe it is a sure thing the team will focus heavily to assist Salah.

Most of the time when a team has two star players, they usually end up not winning the league because of misunderstandings from both the players, while in Premier League this is not so common, trust me in Italy this is a massive phenomena which has cost the title to Inter Milan several times.

The minute Klopp sees this as a problem, he'll fix it. He's not afraid to take players down a peg or two or give them time to cool their head.
4144  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Most of us have lived a world of USD dominance, but history changes on: July 12, 2022, 03:03:03 PM
If any currency has a tiny chance of surpassing the US dollar as the reserve currency of the world, it is likely to be the Euro or Chinese Yuan.

Didn't realise today (or yesterday?) euro just hit parity with the US dollar. Mindless printing, rate hikes, expanding reserves held by foreign powers (thinking China on its own anyway) and still the dollar finds a way to flick a finger in the general direction of every other would-be fiat.

I've no doubt it'll crash and burn some ways down the road but not in our lifetime, huh.

New kid Carvalho, fullbacks I never heard of before (shame on me) and Bobby leading the line in Thailand, started seeing when down 1-0 to a Sancho goal but we're playing much better (passes, accuracy, attempts). We're now 3-0 down though haha but United playing a proper first eleven!

We do have an entire squad more than United on the bench, so this is going to be some kind of musical chairs game I bet!

Also, didn't realise actually I'd not joined up the pool yet (didn't click on the link Capt'n sent to me till now), though had paid much earlier. #15 to join, hope to see the rest of you gentlemen in there -- only weeks to the first game!

Brilliant, Agbe. Think I've seen your previous posts before -- I always say and repeat: keep things simple, for the sake of simplicity, it's okay to sacrifice technical accuracy so you get the kids motivated and interested. Eventually, we all learn more and correct our assumptions, and realise later some assumptions aren't important to the user

The concern shouldn't be to correct at this stage, but to provide a basic foundation. And perhaps at this stage, it's more of economics than of computer science Wink

I would question teaching trading/investment though, even if it is Bitcoin's biggest use case at the moment, and yes, that is unpopular to accept.
4148  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: ⚽ FIFA World Cup 2022: Qualifying Games For Qatar on: July 12, 2022, 10:03:31 AM
Top news for WC is jerseys, weirdly enough. Mexico looks nice, England is questionable.

Iran also fired their coach so that's weird to do before the tournament!

Mancini promised yesterday to lead Italy to glory, but nah...

Maybe in your country things are different. Here in India, the only instance when I see women playing football is when I travel to the north-eastern states such as Manipur and Nagaland. Apart from that women's football is confined to universities and colleges. There has been no change in the situation for the last few decades. And being a woman, I can say that among my friend circle very few are actually interested in football. Again, this maybe something unique to India and in western nations the situation maybe different.

I'm not from the West, we're in the same global South, and it also was the same in Malaysia, women confined to the sports you mentioned (my mom played hockey, too).

It required a change in the things I mentioned above to switch things around and once that started, the wave was pretty quick too. Even in "the West", a prime example is Netherlands, who initially banned women's football decades ago! But since the late 1990s at least, started being invested in women's football (facilities, coaches, paid positions) and especially the past ten years they've seen a dramatic improvement in quality and performance. Plus they'll also be the first to introduce mixed football teams.

It does happen fairly quickly if the right things are in place, so that's just how it is in India, and rest of the world. Football in India anyway is underdeveloped even for men. You're a cricket country Wink

Hard to disagree with any of the points brought up, but I did think the chart (and the other information in the link) was an okay starting point -- a lot more useful than having no data on electricity costs. But probably far less useful to someone who actually would want to start mining.

I strongly agree climate plays a role, I know first-hand the debilitating effects on hardware in tropics (heat is one problem but humidity is often overlooked and in some cooler countries the humidity causes problems on a machine that runs non stop). On the other hand, cost of repairs could be far cheaper in some countries with low energy cost anyway, and that could actually offset better than say, insurance and maintenance in more expensive countries.

I guess a true cost calculation is extremely difficult, gear and maintenance, licensing even (approvals to run commercial enterprise or even specialised equipment).

I missed this, my boy buwaytress. Well done my friend. Not bad, not bad at all. Pre season starts now, Liverpool vs Man Utd in Thailand tomorrow, 2pm GMT. Only a friendly but will give us something after a drought of footy since May. I wish I was in Thailand, somewhere I am yet to visit.

Beautiful day here in the Uk, i hope you’re all well.

Thank you, that should go to plenty of pizzas, and already paid for my next season's EPL pool.

I saw Klopp's pre- presscon, and he asked the reporters "was it like this when Man Utd came yesterday?" and people were replying "Nooo Noooo" haha.

The Thai fans are quite crazy too, haven't been there myself since 2008 -- but the Reds there still deck out the cafes even when we were plumbing the depths of mid-table boredom haha. Sportsbet reunion #4??

All well, always appreciate the shout out, brother. See you Istanbul maybe huh!

CLS63 slaman29 yeah haha, I'm one of those guys who doesn't give the time of day to freespins, and then this one comes along and pops it all at me, think it was something like a 350x boost on the win, I definitely get the pull of slots for these once-in-a-while big prize wins.

Anyway, super promo event for me, all in all just a bit over 5 mbtc profit (including the outright win) for a 1 mbtc outlay. And honestly, Wimbledon was pretty awesome for me betting blindly most of the times (and a couple of spot-on tips from Trofo, whose tennis bets I'd follow all day!).
4152  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏁🏎️ Sportsbet.io🏁 FORMULA 1 2022 Season🏁🏎️Prediction Pool Discussion Thread on: July 11, 2022, 12:54:54 PM
Yeah I close a nice distance with you as the distance in points in a pool like that are really small and getting the pole or the fastest lap of the race can make a big difference in the end of the pool.I was once last in the first 3 races of the season and it shows that being consistent pays off in the long term.

For Hamilton I am always happy but unfortunately Mercedes did not brought the upgrades they promised as they promised to fighting for race wins from Silverstone and after. We are exactly in that part of the season, hopefully after the August official F1 holidays in the Spa race in Belgium we can see the true fighting for the race from Mercedes. That would just add up to F1 being more competitive and even better to watch.

It's the same with all the pools, consistency wins the day. It's like City really, you can afford to lose more times than Liverpool and still win the title as you win more games. Liverpool don't lose so much but fell short as they couldn't get a win out of draws. Sorry for football reference.

Look forward to see Mercedes bring it to the table then, I'm a complete neutral so a race to the wire is that excites me most.

He wrote my name wrong to prevent me from recognizing. Cheesy Despite its being my third yellow cap I'm winning the yellow cap for the first time after eight races. Frankly, the pool has been going on really fun. The point differences are really close to each other. But I'm sure that you won't be able to close the point gap with me. Tongue

Not more sure than I am haha, but glad you're enjoying it. It's a game of patience and cool. Can be tempting to put in outrageous picks but you'll only fall behind on one failed gamble. Enjoy the freebets!
4153  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin reach 18600$ level in this week ends? on: July 11, 2022, 11:32:46 AM
Looks like we're going to just about fall short of a Sunday stand, some selling pressure just as N America stirred, and we're only hours away from Asian markets opening, though I suppose the good news is that 20k does seem like serious support. Some FUD from Mt Gox as usual, and then we should hear more about some US and Asian macros next week. See you all next Sunday, I guess.
+1

Wait and see , it's not even a fall ... nearly touching over 22k and now dropped to below 21k , we can recover it really fast to break the resistance within a couple hours from now.
We are heading back to bullish , not formed yet but pretty soon and yeah let's seen on the next week market move then we might talk again!

Well, the whole point is that it's just as easily able to fall through support as it is to break resistance -- in normal market conditions. But we're not really in any regular conditions, sentiment is so fragile that any development from macro trends seems to send either jitters throughout or boost confidence -- and that only for a moment.

I'd love to say we're headed back to bullish but there simply isn't enough signs of that, while there's plenty of bad news pain left around the corner.
4154  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cost to Mine 1 BTC in every country on: July 11, 2022, 09:24:00 AM
This is a very interesting graphic since it shows at what price a miner would be selling his coins for and therefore it does influence the market quite a lot. What I think is a big problem is that they don't show the power costs that they actually used to calculate this. In many countries the cost of power can be very different for companies and private persons, so if they don't say the calculate with for example 0,25 USD per KWH then its is not as helpful as it could have been.

But the methodology is based on cost of power -- you can open the original link shared and dig in deeper. Which is why I commented that this pricing isn't entirely accurate, it's only based on commercial consumption cost by directly connecting to power grids. As you know, not all miners would do that, and not all miners pay the same rates -- like it used to be in China, where they'd be able to negotiate independent rates with state energy providers. If the other stats are true (like from Bitcoin Policy Institute numbers) then most miners already are on renewables and alternative energy sources -- so I doubt most of them are paying these rates.

The data's just indicative of how much you'd pay if you just decided to plug in and mine.
4155  Economy / Speculation / Re: Was $17.5K the low? on: July 11, 2022, 08:50:55 AM
With everyone expecting this negative effect, there's a good chance it's already been priced in imo. In the same context of "buy the rumour, sell the news", then bears appear to have already "sold the rumour", the question is whether they will then "buy the news" as it were. It would be very bullish if when this negative news arrives Bitcoin doesn't dump afterwards, that much is sure.

For now in the short-term, price seems relatively strong despite impending bad news on it's way. That much is a positive sign for now.

Yup, and we saw that the last rate hike too, all that nosediving happened an entire week before the actual announcement, and as soon as the 0.75 rate was confirmed, we actually saw a recovery. Not sure now how it'll all look like as we look headed down to test 20k again before US Monday arrives, but I suspect we'll see a repeat recovery IF rate is the same. Job numbers actually was surprisingly good so if the rate hike is a little lower than expected then we could very well see a strong surge out of oversold area.

Just came across this, published last month, but don't recall seeing anything like it on the forum, so just sharing.

Original article by 911 Metallurgist, it's got the rates for some other crypto too but I'm just going to share the one for Bitcoin: Cost to mine 1 Bitcoin in every country.

I knew Asia was expensive, but not THAT expensive. Also, I think this is the cost of grid electricity. I know in my part of the world, for example, some miners want to experiment with natural gas generators. Far, far cheaper, no one would plug into the grid!

Kuwait, though!

CSL63's third yellow cap, I knew he was a long-game hustler, watch out for him in the football pools Wink Well done, bastards.

Second sub-10 point race for me, amazed to still be in 6th -- it looks catchable, 12 points away "only" but every race the margins are so tight it's going to take a lot of mistakes for top boys right now.

Anyone else really happy with Hamilton?

^^Yeah, quite pleased to have met Pascal on forum, he went on to do some interviews and then introduced us to his wider network of Bitcoin artists, also very cool people and actually artistic...  Offence meant to the majority of NFT artists heh.

Nanu Berks was another we interviewed after they did an exhibit in France, Argentinian IIRC.

Also to note they were part of a broader movement back then (the yellow jackets in France) so I dig those kinds of art and activism. And Bitcoin spoke loudly for them.

Man what a battle. Going to have to tear away to deal with real life but hope Nick pulls off the 4th set to take it all the way. Should end up with a small profit regardless of result, hedged all the way. Live odds weren't as interesting as I imagined. Bookies refused to budge on Djokovic despite the Aussie's serve masterclass in set 1.
