4161  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Loads of fake peers advertised on bitcoin network on: July 12, 2021, 06:42:44 PM
I am still not seeing anything out of the ordinary. So either they are hitting specific IPs / Nodes or my SonicWall is blocking them for some reason.
I do have the sonic configured to block botnets, so if the connections are coming from known bad IPs they might never make it in. But other then that I have no idea.

@piotr_n  are you still seeing the attack?

4162  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Loads of fake peers advertised on bitcoin network on: July 12, 2021, 10:58:32 AM
I am not seeing that in either of my "live" nodes in the office. Just about a dozen regular peers. Both are running 0.21.1
I have a 0.20.0 at home that I just turned on for the 1st time in a few weeks to see and it seems to syncing be fine with about 5 peers none blocked so far (15 minutes since boot +/- a few)
Are they all coming from 1 IP block or from everywhere?

4163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Better than "GOLD" for criminals, BTC is easier to steal; Easier to scam; on: July 12, 2021, 10:48:27 AM
...

If you hate BTC so much why don't you just go away.
I know you have none and have never had access to any real amounts of coins.
Nobody who uses BTC really cares what you have to say.
Nobody on this forum really cares about what you have to say.

You come here to tell everyone how bad BTC is and how bad CHIA is yet you own none and never have.

Just stop complaining and being a troll get a job.

Oh, and BTC is better then gold since more places take it for commerce then gold (Which you don't have any of either)

4164  Economy / Services / Re: [CFNP] Roobet.com Signature Campaign | The Honest Online Casino | Full Members+ on: July 12, 2021, 01:27:26 AM

Could you post the BTC <-> USD amount you use when paying. When I convert to fiat I have to pay taxes on it Coinbase / Gemini report to the IRS, & having a rate makes it easier. If not, no big deal but I am terrible at keeping records Wink

Thanks,
Dave
4165  Other / Meta / Re: Report Malware and Suspicious Links here so Mods can take Action ! on: July 12, 2021, 12:54:54 AM
They also seem to be staying up much longer.
The one below was posted at 09:49:54 AM my time, I reported it at 10:05:28 AM when I saw it.
They never used to stay up for 15 minutes.

Oh well, guess we just have to start being a bit more proactive on this till the reporting bot is fixed.

And after I reported it, it was still up for a while. Guess the mods were on a lunch break.

-Dave

The new beta version is finally ready. You can download PhoenixMiner 5.7a from here:

4166  Other / Meta / Re: Report Malware and Suspicious Links here so Mods can take Action ! on: July 10, 2021, 10:13:49 PM
So the PhoenixMiner malware people are back. Or they have at least changed their posing bot enough to fool the malware reporting bot.
Been seeing these crop up more and more. Here is a quote I added code tags and spaces to so linking would not work.

Bummer as it seems to have calmed down for a while.

The new features in this release are:

  • Added lock core clock
  • The problem with the missing GPU temperatures on Nvidia GPUs is fixed
  • Added native kernels for AMD RX6700 GPUs. These are faster than the generic kernels and produce a lot less stale shares
  • Increase the max supported DAG epoch to 550 (should be enough to about Jan 2023)
  • Full support for setting clocks, fan speeds, voltages, and memory timings of AMD RX6900/6800/6700 cards
  • The specific hashrate is now shown in the form of kilo hashes per joule (kH/J). Example: if a GPU has hashrate of 30 MH/s with 100W power usage, the specific hashrate is 300 kH/J
  • Added new command-line parameters -ttj and -ttmem, allowing automatic fan speed control based on GPU hotspot (junction), and memory temperatures respectively. Example: -ttmem 83 will keep the GPU memory temperature at or bellow 83C by increasing the fan speed as necessary. These parameters can be combined with -tt, as well as with each other. These options are supported only on AMD GPUs that report junction and memory temperatures
  • Added new command-line parameters -tmaxj and -tmaxmem, allowing to decrease the GPU usage when the GPU hotspot (junction), or GPU memory temperatures are above the specified thresholds. These options are supported only on AMD GPUs that report junction and memory temperatures
  • Added support for AMD Windows drivers 21.3.2, and 21.3.1
  • Added support for AMD Linux drivers 20.50.x. Use this drivers only if you have Polaris or older GPUs, or the latest RX6x000 GPUs. WARNING: Vega, Radeon VII, and Navi GPUs won't work with these drivers!
  • Turn off the zero fan feature on AMD cards whenever a fixed fan speed is used (e.g. -tt -40), or when an auto fan with min fan speed is used (e.g. -tt 63 -minfan 35). To disable this feature, add -fanstop 1 command-line parameter
  • When -mcdag 1 is specified under Linux, the miner will not wait for the daggen.sh script to finish before starting to generate the DAGs. Instead it will for a fixed 7 seconds. This allows you to do all the following in the daggen.sh: turn off the overclocking of Nvidia GPUs, sleep for 30-60 seconds to allow time for DAG generation, and then re-apply the overclocking of the Nvidia GPUs
  • Other small improvements and fixes

The support for -ttj, -ttmem, -tmaxj, and -tmaxmem for Nvidia 3090 and 3080 GPUs is not yet ready for release. We hope to have it ready for the final 5.7 release.

For more robust integrity check, you can use our GPG public key, which was verifyed with ETH transaction from our main devfee account as explained here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2647654.msg56755869#msg56755869.

Please let us know if you have any problems or questions related to PhoenixMiner 5.7a.
4167  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: METAL MUSIC COIN V3 - A COIN FOR THE UNDERGROUND METAL MUSIC SCENE on: July 10, 2021, 05:16:01 PM
what if CPU mining?

Sorry no, we will still keep it as scrypt coin, we will update the wallet so that it will load fast.

In that case can you use one of the newer difficulty adjustment algorithms?
As of now it's somewhat simple to game it.

I'm not sure if it's related to to loading speed but can you take a look at the memory use.
At least under Windows it uses well over 1.5GB of RAM.

-Dave

yup the current one is a pig.

yup that's the one update we need to resolve as well.

Bueller?...Bueller?...Bueller?...

Just a 3 month poke since we last discussed the update. Wondering if there is any progress. The memory & disk i/o are really annoying since I run most of my coin daemons in VMs to keep them separate in case one goes haywire. Most can fit in a much smaller space then MMC.

4168  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase Card (Visa Debit) on: July 09, 2021, 02:38:09 AM
@davef, wait so purchasing something with $1 in xlm charges you $1.029 but returns $1.04?

According to what is being shown yes. You get back more xlm in rewards then you spend in fees.

With that being said I don't have any xlm to spend so I cannot verify.
So in theory you are getting 1.5% back so it puts it in an OK situation for CC rewards.
Going with xlm rewards and using USDC gets you 4% back which is just about unheard of in CC rewards.

Unless xlm tanks between your earning them and spending them.....

4169  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Coinbase Card (Visa Debit) on: July 08, 2021, 11:17:46 PM
If you use these cards that are on the market, and maybe let's discuss particularly the one from Coinbase/Visa, aren't they getting all the data you produce with that card? You surely have to undergo KYC before getting that card I assume and afterwards any purchase you ever do leaves a trail right?

Are there any anonymous versions in the market? Is that even allowed?

It's coinbase so you have KYC just to open an account.
There are no reliable anonymous reloadable ones.
You always have the Visa / MasterCard / American Express gift card options out there.

4170  Economy / Exchanges / Coinbase Card (Visa Debit) on: July 08, 2021, 09:34:08 PM
So the new Coinbase credit card is available. Just got an email about it.
For the USA anyway it's a Visa debit. 1% back in BTC or 4% back in XLM
However, the fees are stupid:

Quote
You can spend BTC with Coinbase Card but there are 3 things to know:
Flat 2.49% fee
We sell your BTC each time you make a purchase, which incurs a fee.
Spending is like selling
If you spend BTC that’s worth more than what you paid for it, you may have to report a capital gain.

Looked a a few others all had the same fee.
The only exception that I saw was USDC with no fee.

Don't know if's its been discussed here before I did not see anyone talking about it.

Got the card since it's free. Probably not going to use it.

4172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Skybridge Capital filed an amendment to SEC to allow them to invest on Bitcoin on: July 08, 2021, 01:26:46 PM
The wheels of government move slowly. I really cannot see them denying the request as they have granted permission to other funds.
So, unless there is something glaringly different about them I see it happening by the end of the year.

As with all things that discuss investments, this opinion is just mine. DYOR.

4173  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Who is paying very very large fees when not needed and why? on: July 07, 2021, 02:24:33 PM
...
So yeah, legacy transactions at way over the going fee rate. At least they batch their withdrawals, but Binance (and all exchanges) are responsible for a significant amount of mempool bloat.

Makes you wonder if anyone sat down and did a cost analysis of hiring programmers and re-doing some things to reduce the fees they pay and possibly increase privacy a bit by not moving funds as much, vs. the cost of dong the things the way they do now.

Probably not, but you never know.

4174  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Blockstream Jade - fully open source hardware wallet on: July 07, 2021, 01:43:20 PM
The interesting thing about the PIN server... is that you can actually run your own. They do provide the code: https://github.com/Blockstream/blind_pin_server

Of course, there is no guarantee that the PIN server you are connecting to is actually running this code... unless you do run your own. Tongue

And I've no idea how easy it is to setup, resource requirements etc, but maybe it could be a nice little addition to something like a RaspiBlitz/Umbrel/MyNode setup. Huh
...Maybe, I am wrong but it seems that things haven't changed much since the first announcement.

No, you are not wrong.
But I think part of the issue is that they are not targeting people like "us" who know what we are doing and want a measure of privacy and control.
They are looking to go after the Coinbase / Gemini / etc. type users that want that warm security blanket type feeling.

It does not really supply it, but it makes them feel better.

4175  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Spain drafts bill: "authorities can temporarily requisition all types of assets" on: July 07, 2021, 11:37:54 AM
American question, since I don't know much about the way the law in Spain works.
Is there a body Spain like the US Supreme Court that rules on laws like this and can determine if it's legal there?

I see it as not much different then the draft in times of war or the war production act here in the US.
Both of which the courts have said is fine.

4176  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Who is paying very very large fees when not needed and why? on: July 06, 2021, 11:23:42 AM
I made a comment elsewhere but it seems to be valid that it looks like there are some wallets that are responding poorly to other high fees.
Last night when the mempool was almost empty there were transactions coming in that were 1 or 2 sat/byte. Once there were a few transactions that had a fee higher then the needed one the fees started to go up a bit closer to 4+ sat/byte. Even though the mempool was empty.

It was almost like the wallet was taking an average or something of what was in the block instead of looking at the fees.
Could be a bunch of lazy programming. Almost like adding the highest 10 fees that should you see going into the next block and add them to the lowest 10 fees you see going into the next block and divide by 20.

-Dave
4177  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Jun 2021] Mempool empty! Use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs! on: July 06, 2021, 12:40:08 AM
There is the risk of a government-sponsored 51% attack.
If we start reading reliable news coming from miners directly that someone (be it the government or anyone else), is starting to confiscate huge numbers of mining units, we could be closer to such a scenario. But it's still an expensive attack to maintain even if they gathered the required amount of hardware.

I think the Chinese government has reached its goal. Chinese miners have been shut down, they have seen what will happen to them, and their mining operations in China are now a thing of the past. With them out of the way, the communist party can now switch their attention to the digital yuan.
I don't think the Chinese government getting miners to stop mining in China achieves anything of substance. If the miners are allowed to move their equipment overseas, the Chinese government would be hurting their own economy, and bitcoin would still be making it more difficult for the CCP to control it's population.

Information does not flow freely out of (or within) China. So if the Chinese government is seizing miners, there is a good chance this will not be publicly known. The cost to maintain a 51% attack is pretty low if you exclude the cost of the equipment. The cost of a 51% would be the cost to run the equipment, which is, with the most advanced ASICs is a fraction of the expected value of the bitcoin that would be mined absent a 51% attack.

We also had the effect of having 28% of all mined blocks have no transactions via the recent 28% drop in difficulty, and there were not major issues with transaction fees rising, or the mempool getting clogged.

Going a bit OT from the original point of the thread so we might want to continue the difficulty discussion here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5307087.msg57392211#msg57392211

But I did want to point out that as of NOW 8:30 PM EDT 5-July there are 3 blocks of transactions in the mempool the 1st block would require a fee of 70+ sat/vb to get into it. the 2nd one you can into for 4 sat/vb and there have been no blocks for the last 30 minutes.

There are some really messed up fee estimators out there. And some places just paying a fixed fee, which may or may not be messing up the fee estimators.

4178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Koch brothers buy the Morrisons supermarket chain. on: July 05, 2021, 09:16:37 PM
And on a side note: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssZ_8cqfBlE
So if they can dump in a bunch more money and get even more efficient by using robotics on a massive scale like this then it might be an even better move.

Projects like this do cost a fortune and the labor to keep it running is also high. Robot techs get paid a lot more then people stocking shelves. But they can serve many more people so there is that big plus.

4179  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Best electrum server? on: July 05, 2021, 08:57:23 PM
1. Are there any other projects I should be aware of?

There is also Esplora which is based on Electrs

2. Can I use Electrs to serve random users from across the internet like I can with Electrumx?
3. Can I create a Tor hidden service for both? Clearnet is not an option.

Yes and yes as far as I know.

4. What are the general benefits and drawbacks for both?

There are performance issues with Electrs
https://blog.keys.casa/electrum-server-performance-report/
So depending on use it might not be able to keep up with requests.

For you and just a few users it may or may not matter depending on how much you will be using it.

4180  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: July 05, 2021, 04:33:36 PM
Would be interesting to know if the new locations are space constrained or power constrained.
If power is the issue but not space you load up all the miners but only run the ones that generate the best profit. If the profit point switches it's just flipping one set of miners off and the other one on.
If space is the issue, you would have to plug in the more profitable ones now and hope for the best.

Wonder if we will ever know how they are running them.
