4181  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BTC price is crashing - Bitfinex is down on: June 21, 2016, 12:55:07 PM
I think BTC-E was being DDoSed at the same time finex was down - so co-ordinated actions against the exchanges.
4182  Economy / Exchanges / Re: using poloniex trllbox for trading on: June 21, 2016, 12:49:32 PM
The answer is don't. By the time the pumpers on the trollboxes are talking up their coins, the price has already risen, they're trying to get noobs to buy, so they can sell to them.
4183  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How many traders do you think there are on the major exchanges? on: June 21, 2016, 12:48:10 PM
thank you for the input, but i was asking how many active traders do you think that usually are live on the big exchanges.

ofcourse its just pure speculation . you dont have to be right . just brainstorming here.

Ok then. my answer is 1 million..

It is definitely not that high. I would say no more than 10,000. It is the same people trading on multiple exchanges, they spread the money out to reduce exchange risk (the exchange going the way of mt gox) and also to do arbitrage.

Bitcoin and altcoin trading is very much a niche thing.
4184  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: There is nothing funny in The DAO "attack" on: June 20, 2016, 03:32:07 PM
I'm not sure why people keep posting new threads to make fun with The DAO, Ethereum and Vitalik Buterin. We saw videos, memes and everything, but the truth is that personally this failure makes me angry.

You are right it is not funny. But people are responding with memes and jokes simply because the Ether hype got so extreme (for example I got spammed with dozens of personal messages on reddit, promoting ether, as did everyone who ever posted on the r/bitcoin subreddit).

It's the extreme promotion that has made people respond with jokes.
4185  Other / Politics & Society / Re: VOTE BREXIT on 23 June, UK on: June 20, 2016, 02:59:27 PM

If you genuinely believe there aren't any banksters giving financial support to the leave campaign, you're as gullible and easily manipulated as you sound.

Some individual bankers have definitely given money to Leave from their after-tax earnings. But the sums are absolutely dwarfed by the money that corporations like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan have given to Remain.

You are deluded if you think big money doesn't want remain - you only have to see the way the markets soared when that MP got murdered to understand how badly they want a Remain vote.
4186  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 'Brexit' could trigger World War Three, warns David Cameron on: June 20, 2016, 12:07:46 PM
So where will be the best place to get the vote count for the Brexit? What is the process? If the vote passes I want to be ready to go long on bitcoin Wink

It is being counted council area by council area and the Guardian and the BBC online with be doing live blogs, so you should be able to find out in real time.

Beware of opinion polls just now - Brits tend to be polite, so there will be a number of "shy Leavers" who feel it is a bit uncouth to admit to a pollster that they are voting Leave, but will do so in the privacy of the polling booth. Not to mention that millions had voted by postal vote prior to the murder and all reports were that the postal votes were heavily for Leave.
4187  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How many traders do you think there are on the major exchanges? on: June 20, 2016, 12:03:33 PM
Poloniex shows the number of accounts logged in at the bottom.

As at the time of writing they are showing 6176 users currently online and 24 hour volume of 50,000 BTC.

They used to show total number of users registered with them, but no longer do so, but from memory it was something like 30,000.

So it is a small amount of speculators who are doing the bulk of the trading.
4188  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BREAKING NEWS: DAO Attacker Identified!! on: June 19, 2016, 04:27:32 PM
well if he has been caught who drained the DAO twice today? once for 22 ether second still in progress or was 30 mins ago

Wait, you mean the DAO is under another attack? Seriously? How and how come they didn't plug the leak as soon as the first one happened?
4189  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Poloniex is randomly blocking IP adresses on: June 19, 2016, 04:23:45 PM
Apparently there was a pretty heavy DDoS attack this morning (EU time)

The mitigation measures temporarily shut out entire IP ranges. All seems to be fine now.

Presumably IP ranges from Russia and other known sources of DDoS attacks?

I wonder why people are DDoSing them - what do they have to gain from it?
4190  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Preferred method of buying Bitcoin?? on: June 19, 2016, 02:43:23 PM
A really cheap way is to mine an alt when the difficulty is low, using just an ordinary graphics card, and then converting it to bitcoin. Or minting coins with a proof of stake wallet, and then converting to bitcoin.
4191  Economy / Speculation / Re: Unnatural Bitcoin Price Growth Cannot Be Sustained Indefinitely on: June 19, 2016, 02:02:41 PM
I think a lot of people are using Bitcoin as a store of their wealth and not as a digital currency and that's why we are seeing such abnormal jumps in the price.

Yes - the consensus now is that bitcoin is an asset not a currency, and as a result it is behaving very similarly to gold.
Yes. Bitcoin is not just crypto based currency, its crypto based digital gold. People just hold their bitcoin for profit like as people reserve gold. A currency is not for holding, currency is a system of money in general circulation. What ever will be the price of bitcoin near future, the price will be not sustainable IMHO.

Just remember that just like gold, prices go up and down. The price of gold was very high in 1979 - and then dropped and didn't recover it's previous highs till about 2005. That is a long time to be underwater. If people have made profits, then cash out an amount to your initial investment, and that way, if it tanks you haven't lost money and if it continues to soar, what you still have invested should be very profitable.
4192  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum is now getting negative coverage in the mainstream media on: June 19, 2016, 01:57:02 PM

Suppose a large bank gets robbed, USD are stolen. Would the mainstream media say, USD is no longer safe? Rubbish.

All the US Mint does is print the cash - it doesn't design bank systems, that is up to the banks. The trouble with this heist is that the design flaw was made by the Ether devs...
4193  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Did MI5 murder Jo Cox, like Mossad Sweden's Foreign Minister Anna Lindh? on: June 19, 2016, 10:06:35 AM
It could also be completely possible that the guy was just mentally ill and killed her due to his messed up reasons, Not everything has to be a conspiracy theory. I think it would take more than the killing of an mp by some nutter to swing the vote in the other direction for most people. Myth busted i would say.

This. I think he wanted attention and chose the referendum to do it because he'd get maximum publicity, whereas if he'd murdered her on an ordinary Thursday, there'd have been a few lines in the press and then the story would have moved on to the next thing.
4194  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is possible to trade with small amounts? on: June 19, 2016, 10:03:23 AM
I want to know if it is possible to buy and sell Bitcoins with small amounts such as 1$ and earn money?
If possible, how will be my profit?

it could have been, but if you are trading USD / BTC I do not think will get a good profit, for that much money I recommend trading bitcoin / altcoin. You can try it in yobit.net which has many options altcoin cheap Smiley Thank you

it is not about the amount of money you can earn when you start from a very small amount, it is all about learning how to trade.
and since everything is percentage based then you can do it with small amount, you pay a percentage (~0.2%) as fee and you earn profit/ or lose based on a percentage so it really doesn't matter.

Well yes. Trading with tiny amounts is a good way to learn because the losses arn't painful. After a point though you need to scale up to see real profit.

To all those talking about fees - the fees on a trade are usually 0.2% to buy and 0.2% to sell. So you need to make a minimum 1% on the move, to cover all the fees and still have a profit.
4195  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The ONLY solution to the ETH/DAO conundrum.. on: June 19, 2016, 09:58:57 AM
What is interesting about all this is that all the outcomes will harm Ether:

1) no fork: attacker gets all these Ethers and he can manipulate the price as he wants.

2) with a fork: attacker doesn't get Ether, but confidence on Ethereum drops and the price goes down

And the "economic" solution (through economic incentives):

3) miners accept the attacker's proposal of one million Ether to reject the soft fork:
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/miners-to-be-offered-one-million-ether-claims-daos-alleged-attacker-in-ccn-interview/

"Just speculating (because only 1 million to miners is committed), but it makes sense to have a carrot and a stick. Carrot: return some of the eth to the DAO to make righteous people happy. Stick: return some of the eth to miners if they don’t fork to give monetary incentive to not fork. So… the impact and amounts will be a lot smaller than current estimations."

But even if miners accept the attacker's proposal, there's a risk of the price going down, so the miners will be harmed (unless they're already shorting Ether to gain when the price drops).

If it is a) it's only 3% of the coins. MtGox was about that and bitcoin took it on the chin, the price dived to be sure, but that's how it goes. 97% are in other hands.
4196  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Azerbaijan has moved to Europe? on: June 18, 2016, 07:08:38 PM
Maybe I was in school too long ago, but I remember being taught about the Bosphorus strait, with Europe on the left, and Asia on the right. Well, I've just checked the news and I read an article about Formula 1 racing. The European Grand Prix is tomorrow and that will be in Baku. In Azerbaijan. That's in Asia to my eyes.

Yeah, well, Australian participated in the Eurovision and it's on the other side of the planet. I think they are flexible about sports and contests!  Grin

Does China not realize that news about this is going around the world?

Under the previous leadership they used to be so careful about their image. Why does the current President not care? Anyone from China care to enlighten us?
4198  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum is now getting negative coverage in the mainstream media on: June 18, 2016, 05:25:03 PM
I recommend people having a read of the Ether subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/

Some of them are trying to track the culprit, some are arguing for a fork, others that Ether should just take the loss on the chin.

I feel really bad for them, they've all put hard cash into the thing.
4199  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum is now getting negative coverage in the mainstream media on: June 18, 2016, 04:33:34 PM

Griff Green mentioned that there are only 500 people capable of this attack, i.e. the broad Ethereum dev community. The message also suggests someone who believed his hack was not stealing because it followed the principles of the code.

The ironic thing is the attacker could have likely keep doing small versions of this without causing the price to tanker. Makes me think it was someone who wanted to make a statement rather than a simple criminal.

So any idea about the identity of the hacker?
4200  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bank of Canada Explores Bitcoin’s Technology on: June 18, 2016, 03:11:39 PM
http://www.wsj.com/articles/bank-of-canada-explores-blockchain-technology-1466107171

Quote
The Bank of Canada said it is studying the technology underlying the digital currency bitcoin, conducting one of the first known tests by a major central bank about how it could use the nascent system known as blockchain.

The central bank confirmed the experiment dealing in interbank payments in a statement from Senior Deputy Gov. Carolyn Wilkins. It stressed, however, that it has no plans to issue a digitized Canadian dollar or conduct tests dealing with public money.

The Bank of Canada, in conjunction with New York-based startup R3 CEV, said it has taken part in a “proof of concept” experiment using blockchain technology, which is a so-called distributed-ledger system that is billed as being more open, transparent and flexible than existing databases widely used in banking.

Others involved in the project included Payments Canada, which owns and operates the country’s payment-clearing and settlement infrastructure, and Canadian commercial banks.

“The Bank’s goal in these projects is solely to better understand the technology firsthand,” Ms. Wilkins said. “Other frameworks need to be investigated, and there are many hurdles that need to be cleared before such a system would ever be ready for prime time.” She added that many central banks are investigating similar questions.
