How to uninstall Windows Update KB3035583 – The Windows 10 AKA Squares 10 downloader

Microsoft is trying everything they can to shove down our throats their new abomination called Windows 10 AKA Squares 10. Their latest attempt was to include a downloader for the wretched thing among the recommended updates for Windows 7 and for their previous abomination, Squares 8.1. That company is so dirty that the description for the update (KB3035583) is "enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user", which will lead even people who have the common sense NOT TO allow updates to be automatically downloaded and installed to get it.

If you happened to install the sneaky downloader you'll notice a new icon with the Squares 10 logo on the system tray (the area on the lower right corner of the screen where the clock is). Also, if you open the Windows Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT), you'll see the downloader's GWX.EXE process running under the Processes tab. Follow the instructions from the article below to get rid of it:

Silk Road operator Ross Ulbricht sentenced to life in prison

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/may/29/silk-road-ross-ulbricht-sentenced

<< Ross Ulbricht, the man behind illegal online drug emporium Silk Road, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday by Judge Katherine Forrest of Manhattan's US district court for the southern district of New York. Before the sentencing the parents of the victims of drug overdoses addressed the court. Ulbricht broke down in tears. "I never wanted that to happen", he said. "I wish I could go back and convince myself to take a different path."

The 31-year-old physics graduate and former boy scout was handed five sentences: one for 20 years, one for 15 years, one for five and two for life. All are to be served concurrently with no chance of parole. The judge handed out the most severe sentence available to the man US authorities identified as "Dread Pirate Roberts", pseudonymous founder of an Amazon-like online market for illegal goods. >>

Tech Giants Urge Obama to Reject Policies That Weaken Encryption

<< A collection of tech industry giants like Facebook, Google, Apple and Microsoft, as well as civil liberties organizations and Internet security experts, sent a letter to President Obama on Tuesday warning of the unintended consequences of any policy meant to weaken the encryption technologies that protect Internet communications. The White House has been weighing whether to mandate that companies use only forms of encryption that provide law enforcement with the means for unscrambled access - a so-called back door. Critics in the technology industry are concerned that a back door for law enforcement in the United States would be a back door for everyone, including other governments and hackers. One Yahoo executive likened the proposal to "drilling a hole in the windshield".

"We urge you to reject any proposal that U.S. companies deliberately weaken the security of their products", the letter to President Obama said. "We request that the White House instead focus on developing policies that will promote rather than undermine the wide adoption of strong encryption technology." >>

SSDs lose data if left without power for just 7 days

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/ssds-lose-data-if-left-without-power-for-just-7-days.html

<< The standards body for the microelectronics industry has found that Solid State Drives (SSD) can start to lose their data and become corrupted if they are left without power for as little as a week, according to a recent presentation by Seagate's Alvin Cox, who is also chairman of the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC).

The period of time that data will be retained on an SSD is halved for every 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) rise in temperature in the area where the SSD is stored. Consumer class SSDs can store data for up to two years before the standard drops, but when it comes to SSDs used by enterprises, the drives are only expected to retain data for a period of three months – a fact confirmed by Samsung, Seagate and Intel's own ratings on their products.

Security firm KoreLogic is concerned that far too many people are now using SSDs in both consumer and enterprise applications, which is clearly not a great idea if the data is important and might be needed for a longer period that three months. The firm advises that users make sure to regularly back up their data and create drive images, or they will risk losing their data, which can have disastrous consequences, for example if the data was part of evidence gather by a law firm for a deposition. >>

BitTorrent's encrypted P2P chat app Bleep launches publicly for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac

http://venturebeat.com/2015/05/12/bittorrents-encrypted-p2p-chat-app-bleep-launches-publicly-for-android-ios-windows-and-mac/

<< BitTorrent today launched its encrypted P2P chat app Bleep. You can download the first stable version for Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac from bleep.pm.

Formerly known as BitTorrent Chat, Bleep was first released in private alpha in July ( but only for Windows 7 and Windows 8 ) and then as a public alpha in September with apps for Android and OS X. While there have been numerous updates since, today’s release brings Bleep to iOS for the first time, and removes the alpha tag on all platforms. That's right - Farid Fadaie, senior director of product development at BitTorrent, confirmed with VentureBeat that Bleep is skipping the beta phase entirely and going straight to public release.

Additionally, BitTorrent has added a new whisper function to Bleep for both mobile and desktop (though it works best on Android and iOS). In short, whisper lets you send ephemeral messages; just tap "Go to Whisper" to ensure both text and pictures disappear from devices after they’ve been viewed (after 25 seconds). The experience is slightly different on the desktop: hold shift while hitting send. "You can switch back and forth between normal and whisper messages seamlessly, so you don't lose the flow of your conversation", Fadaie said.

In short, whisper takes Bleep's privacy-focused strategy a step further: messages are not only stored locally, they are quickly deleted after they are viewed. BitTorrent says whisper messages even include basic screenshot protection: either nicknames or text are blocked out so it's not clear who said what. Hitting the "eye" icon will switch between the two modes: either nicknames or text are blurred, so taking a screenshot only captures one or the other. >>

France passes new surveillance law in wake of Charlie Hebdo attack

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/05/france-passes-new-surveillance-law-in-wake-of-charlie-hebdo-attack

<< The French parliament has overwhelmingly approved sweeping new surveillance powers in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris in January that killed 17 people at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher grocery in Paris. The new bill, which allows intelligence agencies to tap phones and emails without seeking permission from a judge, sparked protests from rights groups who claimed it would legalise highly intrusive surveillance methods without guarantees for individual freedom and privacy.

Protesters for civil liberties groups launched a last-ditch campaign against the bill under the banner "24 hours before 1984" in reference to George Orwell's dystopian novel about life under an all-knowing dictatorship. Groups including Amnesty International warned of "extremely large and intrusive powers" without judicial controls. >>

The move – aimed at spiky cuts – follows a trend where, each summer, Iranian authorities Iranian authorities get tough on men and women sporting clothing or hairdos seen as imitations of western lifestyles. Beards found to be dirtier than a toilet seat

http://7online.com/health/yuck-9-things-dirtier-than-your-toilet-seat/691110/

<< Watch out bearded men, your facial hair might be dirtier than you think. Microbiologists in Albuquerque, N.M. recently found that men's facial hair can contain as much bacteria as your average toilet seat, according to Action 7 News. John Golobic, a microbiologist with Quest Diagnostics, swabbed a group of bearded men and analyzed the results to see how dirty the beards were. Golobic said that some of the men's facial hair contained bacteria that you would commonly find in a toilet. (...) But beards aren't the only thing found to be as dirty as a public restroom. Here's other items found to be dirtier than a toilet seat.

ATMs: as dirty as a toilet seat.
Cutting Boards: up to 200 times more bacteria.
Elevator Buttons: 40 times more bacteria.
Faucets: 21 times more bacteria.
Laundry: 100 times more E. Coli bacteria.
Money: 6.4 times more bacteria.
Smartphones: 10 times more bacteria.
Sponges: 456 times more bacteria.
Toothbrushes: absorbs all sorts of nasty bacteria looming in your bathroom. >>

Going Clear: the film Scientologists don't want you to see

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/apr/28/going-clear-the-film-scientologists-dont-want-you-to-see

<< The most mesmerising moment in Going Clear, Alex Gibney's wrecking-ball job on Scientology, watched so far by 5.5 million Americans, is a clip of leading church executives singing along to a clunking 1980s rock anthem, We Stand Tall. Disciples wave candles and sway in bad knitwear but, by this point in the HBO documentary, we know that the church allegedly blackmails adherents over their sex lives; that it is thuggish to those who question its conduct; that founder L Ron Hubbard was a conman who switched from writing bad science fiction to bad space religion; that his successor "Pope" David Miscavige is portrayed as a psychopath who has repeatedly hit and tortured his staff.

So, the clip of Scientologists singing along with Miscavige is sinister, an eerie negative of thousands of North Koreans weeping at the death of mass murderer Kim Jong Il. It feels like brainwashing in action. The North Koreans have an excuse for going along with thought control lest they end up in the gulag; Scientology's extraordinary achievement, perhaps, is to pull off brainwashing in Florida, in California. But the church's aggressive lawyers deny all that, and are working hard to prevent the film ever being broadcast in the UK. >>
