Zimmerman clearly wasn't going through withdrawal if your argument is that he was high at the time of the alleged murder. And carrying a lighter does not mean you are high.

Martin tested positive for drugs and had the appropriate paraphernalia with him.  I know you wish he wasn't high but he was.  You have to accept reality instead of denying it.  High or in withdraw, the marijuana is what caused his violent decisions in regards to Zimmerman.  I will not accept that a good kid like Martin just randomly decided to attack someone.  He would not have done it if he was thinking clearly and he would not have been acting strangely and suspiciously when Zimmerman saw him.
I'm not "wishing he wasn't high." I'm questioning that someone who was possibly high on marijuana at the time attacked BECAUSE HE WAS HIGH and not for some other reason.

The first article I found (http://www.idmu.co.uk/canagr.htm) with an actual list of sources ends with "The preponderance of scientific evidence does suggest cannabis may have a role in reducing aggressive behaviour, and the drug is certainly perceived to do so by a large number of cannabis users."

The article lists some studies that say precisely the opposite.
Exactly.  Studies have shown both effects.  But do you know what "preponderance" means?

Quote

However some researchers have reported increased "aggressive" responses on human or animal behavioural models, Carlini et al reported increased aggressive behaviour in THC-dosed rats following deprivation of REM sleep, or after developing tolerance to morphine. Dorr et al reported that a high THC dose (2.5 mg/kg) "markedly increased the percentage of animals which showed both aggression and flight acts--a rare combination among controls." Clinicians have reported a toxic psychosis following prolonged or heavy cannabis use, including aggressive behaviour or panic disorder, however the existence of a specific "cannabis psychosis" is not firmly established in the absence of an underlying psychopathology.

And part of what it ended with, which you chose not to post of course was:

Quote
for some individuals heavy use of cannabis may precipitate a psychotic reaction with aggressive outbursts. These incidents are relatively rare, and highlight the varied individual responses to the drug.

This sounds like precisely what happened to Martin.  I think it's wise to trust government experts more than some random site with a pot leaf logo and an agenda.
Just because a tiny fraction of the population may have adverse effects to a substance doesn't mean we should make it illegal for everyone or call it poison for everyone.  There is so far no proof that it was the marijuana that caused a violent outburst.  Let's wait for the courts to decide who attacked who before we jump to blaming pot.

I'm also curious what you think about articles like this one from mothering.com

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/aristotles-child/201111/the-truth-about-marijuana-and-pregnancy

I think you will find the bulk of doctors agree more with the FDA.
I don't see a single source listed.  Find some actual research. There are over 30 articles referenced by that mothering article.

Maybe the bulk of doctors in the USA.  However, your link doesn't link to a bulk of doctors and their research; it doesn't link to anything.

You also didn't respond to this list of groups that disagree with you. http://www.leap.cc/partner-organizations/

prohibition would have worked if only we had also banned guns.

Of course it would have.  It was a hallmark accomplishment of the progressive movement and only failed because of the violence.  Without the guns, it never would have been repealed.
I guess we simply disagree here.  I can't think of any instances of prohibition working well in the west.  Prohibition has historically always led to a black market where criminals are in control and once-law abiding citizens are forced to become criminals just to have a drink.

Comparing Child Porn and Marijuana use is asinine.  Smoking pot does not hurt others.  Abducting children so you can sell them as sex objects does.

Drugs harm the addicted users and the family members who love them, it is a lie to say it is a victimless crime.
I'll agree that addiction can harm other people beyond the addicted.  I don't at all believe it is anywhere near the damage caused by CP.

You are lumping all drugs into one category (poison) and assuming that they all lead to addiction and abuse.  This is foolish and close minded.
422  Other / Off-topic / Re: Donating to the Zimmerman Defense Fund on: June 14, 2012, 10:26:17 PM
Not to thread hijack further, but you really need to read some more studies from a range of sources, Rarity.  The FDA and DARE are not enough to educate one about drugs.

Most all the articles I find online talking about Marijuana and aggression didn't seem to actually have sources or only sources one study.

The ones that did seem to actually present some form of science were talking about withdrawal symptoms.  Zimmerman clearly wasn't going through withdrawal if your argument is that he was high at the time of the alleged murder. And carrying a lighter does not mean you are high.

I'm also curious what you think about articles like this one from mothering.com (clearly not a pro-pot site).  While it doen't have to do with aggression, it presents evidence that marijuana does not have the effects that an organization like the FDA would lead you to believe.

http://mothering.com/pregnancy-birth/use-of-marijuana-during-pregnancy

There are around 30 sources from varying authors at the end of the article.

Only trusting what the FDA says and ignoring the rest of the scientific world is clearly limiting.  The FDA has been wrong about many things.

I really hope you are a troll and don't actually believe that prohibition would have worked if only we had also banned guns.

Okay, so Singapore doesn't have drugs and their violence is low.  Great.  How do you explain all of the countries/places with legalized/decriminalized drugs and low violence, especially ones that are more similar to the United States than Singapore is? I think that Netherlands handles drugs in a much more sane way than Singapore.  I'm not saying that there isn't a link between drugs and crime.  I'm saying that it isn't a simple of forumla of people + drugs = violence.

Seeing drugs as only poison is keeping your mind closed.

I'm glad you are optimistic about governments.  I wouldn't say they are a force for good though. Instead, I would say they should be a force of good.

Comparing Child Porn and Marijuana use is asinine.  Smoking pot does not hurt others.  Abducting children so you can sell them as sex objects does.

I never could get that setup working on my aging Dell.  I've tried a plug on the video port and I've tried BIOS settings.  But it still complains if I don't have the monitor plugged into the ATI mining GPU card no matter what.  So I render on the ATI card and just live with it.
Well if it's Windows, you need a dummy plug on the ATI card.

Hello piuk, did you notice my comments above about the various buttons and things you can click having an I-beam cursor on mouseover? Is it possible to switch those to having a hand cursor like most people would expect to see?
I think it is just because the a links don't have 'href="#"'

I see the pointer when I mouse over the pills and buttons in the bootstrap docs, but the pills on blockchain.info show the I-beam for me, too.

Pretty sure he is saying that our average block time is 10% too long, which is the same as saying that our average luck is ~90%.
Yeah.  His numbers are expected time to find a block.  p2pool.info shows that for each block, but then Luck for the totals.  I was confused at first, too.

to you naysayers, this is the catch. Even bitinstant can be a huge hassle (the nearest bitinstant bank is over 30 miles away for me). This is a needed service.
You don't have a 7-11 or CVS nearby?
428  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's coming ... on: June 14, 2012, 01:45:05 AM
Exciting.  I really wanted some bitbills.

Are you also going to make bank cards and payment cards like bitbills was going to?

I'd like to try using cgminer instead of the default miner. The config file says " (see full example for how to use cgminer instead)". Where can I find that full example?

Code:
$ ls /opt/bamt/examples/

Trying to buy some right now.  Checkout thing is taking forever.
Looks like we are having some bad luck.  Only 4 confirmations on a transaction I sent 2 hours ago Sad

EDIT: last 2 confirmations went through!

I scanned the QR code to pay and sent the transaction.  Then it said that there weren't enough funds, so I sent .2 BTC more just to make sure I wouldn't be short.  Now I just got a transaction back for guess how much? .2 BTC

But, I think I'm missing something.  So I sent my funds to the address Mt.Gox presented me and 6 confirms happened.  Now what.  It just says "The payment process is now complete. Your payment was successful."

Where do I put my shipping info? I could just PM it, but then how does the seller know that I'm the one who actually paid?

So far, I'm liking bitpay way more.

Yeah, the checkout presents a rather large issue of not being able to add a comment when you buy something to fill out your shipping info.
PM is the best way to do that I would guess, if you sign into MtGox you will be able to see the transaction #, that is really the only way it looks like it can be kept track of.
Andrew
I'll PM.  I didn't use a MtGox account, but I can get the transaction # from my own client.  I should have just sent coins directly to the address in the OP.
431  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BAMT version 0.5 - Easy USB based mining Linux with farm wide management tools on: June 13, 2012, 11:59:46 PM
cron jobs are the correct solution.  time to figure them out.

Can you turn the computer on and off with cron jobs? I don't think it's enough just to stop mining, even idle cards can pull something like 30W.

you can turn it off with cron.  back on could be done simply with a setting in the bios to power on @ certain time.  that would at least avoid the inevitable filesystem corruption and other issues that stem from simply cutting power to a running linux box over and over.

however, I strongly recommend you *do not* implement a scheme of powering your mining rigs on and off every day.

a vast majority of the USB key wear occurs during boot up.  you will accelerate the death of your usb keys tremendously.  if you're so worried about power that you can't run a box at idle, you're in the wrong hobby (or the wrong location, at very least).

Make a cron job that does "stop_mining" and "start_mining"

I'm always terrified when playing Hardcore.  Just one poorly timed lag spike.  Or one simple misclick. I would be so sad.

The real money auction house just opened, right? What are the prices for gold on there?
You can't buy HC gold.
Oh. Didn't know.  Thanks.  I will likely be back soon.

Does mtgox checkout require 6 confirms?  I was expecting it to work like bitpay where it completes as soon as the unconfirmed transaction is seen on the network.

look like this is the new longest block in "recent history"
The pool's hash rate is also the lowest it has been in "recent history"

The hashrate has been level since the end of May.
So recent history is only 2 weeks? I guess the pool is less than a year old, so "history" is short, but still the hash rate hasn't been this low since the middle of February when the pool was still growing.

The website has been looking a little ugly on my end recently, and I have no idea why.
This is on Chrome; it started maybe a week ago.

Note how weird the buttons look... I'll try updating Chrome

Other than your pic being slightly fuzzy I don't see a problem nimda.  Those are the button groups that bootstrap uses.
Yeah. I'm not sure what we are supposed to be seeing.

Does this page render properly for you?

440  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PGP GPG users please verify this signature is valid (bounty - closed) on: June 13, 2012, 01:39:43 AM
I like how GPG is integrated into the Mac and you can highlight any text and hit a key chord and it will encrypt/decrypt/sign/verify right on the spot from within any application.  Wish it were just as tightly integrated everywhere else.
While the integration is really nice, for some reason it won't verify text.  I can get it to verify files, but text in a file always gives me an error.

To get around this, I first made a really simple shell script

Code:
#!/bin/sh
pbpaste | gpg --verify

However, I really liked having the verify command be a service, so I made a service with Automator.  I installed gnupg with brew, so gpg is in /usr/local/bin/

The first action is "Run Shell Script" with Pass input: "to stdin"
Code:
/usr/local/bin/gpg --verify
if [ "$?" -eq 0 ]; then
echo 'Success! The signature is valid!'
else
echo 'ERROR! The signature IS NOT valid (or the public key could not found)!'
fi

The second step is "Run Applescript" because it's the easiest way to get a dialog box.

Code:
on run {input, parameters}

display dialog "" & input buttons {"OK"}

return input
end run

Now if only we could sign bbcode and have it still validate.
