Just bought an SC25 with bitcoin. As for the chick, I would say that getting the bigger one would be a much better value :-)

YMMV.

Junkyard = Car Radiator = Cheap heat exchanger.

Plastic tubing with a reduction fitting all held together by clips and screw on clamps.
Yep. The other thought is to use the existing radiator and just mount it outside in the shade. I might need a larger pump to move the water longer distances, maybe.

Another thought would be to stick an AC unit in the water with it, then pull the heat off that way. Or something even weirder.

4203  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Hacking a BFL Jalapeno to 32GH and beyond....(???) on: January 16, 2014, 07:55:40 PM
From what I've seen and done the mineral has to be moving in order to adequately cool anything serious.  (*Imagine the glass tank in a snowbank, I'll look for pictures)
Which means my proper solution would be to re-rig the water cooling units with bigger pumps and pump water straight from the rain barrel. Which means heat exchanger as that water is of questionable quality. Which means WELDING TIME!

It's never a dull moment at Danger labs.

Thanks I've sent him a message.

Additional:

On the cooling front, I'm resurrecting an old freon unit I used on an overclocked quad board 10 or so years ago.

+1 if it can be done it should, good luck man and make sure you let us all know how it goes.  The only other option I researched at the beginning was mineral oil but cost out weighed air by a bit.

Hm. I wonder if I can immerse it in a tank of mineral oil, then put *that* into a 50 gallon rain barrel. Would the surface area of the glass be enough to allow the heat to radiate into the rain barrel's thermal mass....

That's a project for spring. :-)

Freon? Wow.

This is about the best thread on the forum, following step by step takes a lot of the fear out of the equation.

I really want to add chips to both my jallies but can't find any. SO anyone have or know where I can find some - looking at four to six chips. Preferably in Europe but at the right price I'll suffer the import tax at this end.

Thanks in advance.

ceecee apparently has chips in europe..
4207  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Who here already pre-ordered the Monarch 28 nm Bitcoin mining card ??? on: January 15, 2014, 08:37:03 PM
heres a look at you Monarch LOL

Oh ho, they're watercooling the FETs from the top? This is going to be interesting-fun to watch.

Indeed, that is a problem. I'd offer some bitcoin for it for parts, but it would be a small amount. How about 40% of the potential mining ability of it 2 weeks from now as measured by mining.thegenesisblock.com? :-)
4209  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Jalapeno USB connection issue on: January 15, 2014, 02:11:21 PM
The problem is a blown FTDI chip caused by your power supply going to ground and putting 50% of your electricity voltage across the ground plane and into your computer. The power supply is bad and should not be plugged into your other jalapeno. It should be flagged and trashed.

The jally will either need to be RMAed or you will have to find someone who can replace the chip. I have done it once, it is a screaming pain for a medium level rework person like myself, but should be simpler for somoene who reworks X-Boxes and PS3's for a living.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this seems to happen in the EU. Long term solution is to get a locally sourced power supply that is of a quality to handle your type of power needs and providers.

4210  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [HOWTO] flash your jalapeno to 8+ ghs on: January 14, 2014, 08:37:17 PM
Speaking of which, I have two jalapenos running at 28gh now with more chips. Both need extra cooling; you can take a stock cooling system up to five chips without anything, six chips with small copper heat sinks on the FETs, and seven chips requires either water cooling or a big heat pipe.

I wonder about 8 chips :-)

C

Update: Wondering over. Can do 32gh. With 8 chips you need a water cooling block and a big power supply, but it is fun!

PIZZA!!! :DDD

You gonna make all of us hungry lol
I tell you, the pizzaforcoins thing *worked*. The people at the local PapaJohns were slightly confused about the concept, but it worked.

My 12 year old son was amazed. And I realized that he will grow up thinking something like this as normal. To me it's beyond revolutionary: I paid for a pizza from a vendor I had no relationship with using a currency neither issued by, backed by, or tainted in any way by a government of any kind.

Wow.

Jally doctor to the rescue :-)

1) Where are you located? This makes a difference.
2) What happens when you plug it in? Which lights come on. There should be:

a power LED by the power jack.
Two little Leds in between the power jack and the USB
A LED on the front.

What should happen is power led comes on, front LED flashes, then two LEDs in middle light and front stays solid.

4213  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Poll for the Jalapeno owners on: January 14, 2014, 03:13:06 PM
Poll is not specific.  There are 2 kinds of ROI - 1) fiat ROI 2) BTC ROI

1) fiat ROI will vary day to day as BTC price changes but I'm pretty sure most everybody before April orders will have made fiat ROI barring bad devices
2) Not one single BFL device every made will achieve BTC ROI unless it was given as a free gift (all those promo units BFL sent out to the tech media).  Very few devices ever made BTC ROI other than CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs.

There is an error in this. We all chose to buy units with either dollars or bitcoins. If dollars, then there is no ROI till we sell coins. If bitcoins, then you either convert to dollars at either end or stay in bitcoins at either end.

Technically my ROI then is zilch, as I have not converted my bitcoins to dollars. I have however bought a Chili, chips, and a really good Papa John's pizza which is far more than the 169 I have invested in dollars. So my ROI is positive.
4214  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Poll for the Jalapeno owners on: January 14, 2014, 03:10:43 PM
all my jallies blew up Smiley, they couldn't last more than 11 days. If u are still hell bent on buying stuff from BFL, invest in a good psu to run their asics, else your circuit breakers will kiss the floor, and you will experience a nice lights out situation. Then when you try to boot it up again, welcome to the world of "Unknown Device". Then u find yourself trying to RMA it, which further incurs cost, lol.

Yeah, the power supplies sucked. However if you still have them and want to sell them drop me a PM. I could use a few cores.
4215  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Poll for the Jalapeno owners on: January 14, 2014, 03:09:55 PM
My single purchased in Jan, delivered in August made back it's money in dollars even at 100/btc.

Since then I have been adding chips to them, paying for those in bitcoin, and have made back my investments with time to spare. When you couple in the overall costs, I expect to make back 300-400% of my investment. Taking them to 32gh is truly the way to go.

The thread is at:

Jalapenos were without a doubt the best bitcoin investment I have seen. :-) And if you have one, have a good power supply, and want to go to 16gh I can do it for labor costs in bitcoin, you can get the chips from Ebay.

Youch!
It was made to power 2-3 "normal" jallies. Your machines are just to beastly I guess!

And (no relation to this specific quote) would love to hear more of your work on singles...I have 2 50GH (can't remember what they call them, little sc?) that I'd love to boost.
That's ok. I looked at it, and it's three power cords, each cord going into one of the 12 volt lines on a PCIx connection. The issue is simply that each of my turbo jallies pulls 4 times as much current as a normal one. So instead of feeding 3 jallies, it was feeding 12 of them. :-)

On the positive side, the barrel connectors can handle the current load, so I don't have to replace those. But it is a pretty big bit of power draw.

You could also upgrade that jally to 16gh for chips and .1btc of labor costs to me.... That's something to buy.

I work for bitcoins.

C

That is good to know.
What is the turn around time?
About a week. I like to run them before doing anything, and after to ensure it's good.

Note: I don't want to advertise on this thread, pm me or post to this one.

Will do. I think I'm going to try a corsair 100i for my third jally when I take it to water cooling. The Sedion is good, but not quite as good as the larger radiator on the h100. And the h100i is supposed to have more surface area, which is *all* that matters here.

On a side note, I think I see the issues with the singles; BFL really screwed with the firmware to try and keep them from blowing up. However with the later model heat sinks this is not so much a problem, however you can't just flash them. You need to also add some heat sinks and ensure the airflow is right.

I think I have it down pat here; is anyone interested in the details and such once I get it done? So far I have a 23gh single running at 28+ with no heat problems, but a number of temporary sinks.
