4221  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Block explorers oligopoly. on: May 31, 2021, 09:00:48 PM
If you want to run a block explorer but don't want to get into setting up a database or learning how, there are some "nodes in a box" out there that have them.
All you need is some bandwidth, the available storage space and a computer that can run a base VM and you can install some of them. Others work on a RPi

https://www.mynodebtc.com/ is one of the more popular ones.

4222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can unconfirmed transactions be automatically cancelled by RBF on: May 31, 2021, 08:34:44 PM
Any RBF transaction you broadcast must pay both a higher fee rate and a higher absolute fee than not just the transaction it is replacing, but of all the transactions which would be evicted from the mempool if it were to be accepted. So if an unconfirmed transaction has several unconfirmed children, then you would need to add together the total fee paid by all of them and set your RBF transaction to have a higher fee than that, and not just a higher fee than the parent transaction you are replacing.

I thought it was just the fee for the inputs that came from the parent transaction. You are saying that it is the fee for the entire child transaction.
Learn something new everyday.
Kind of handy if someone sends you a RBF transaction with a low fee, you can 'lock' it by adding a bunch of dust inputs if you have them and also sending with a low fee so they can't just RBF it without paying to move your dust.

4223  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Aged Bitcoins Service / Premium? on: May 31, 2021, 12:32:17 AM
The 4 year time frame you are looking for is going to be tough with just a 10% over since there is about 5%+ of value of forks on those coins and the value of the collectable itself.
The Fork-value is closer to around 2.5% of the Bitcoin value. But since collectibles have to be physically delivered, I doubt this is what OP is looking for.

Did a quick calculation of BCH+BSV+BTG and came up with a bit over 2.5% ($875 at the time) and then just figured the dozens of the other crap forks would add together to get to about the same.
If it's worth the time to someone to put in the time, and if they have the ability to track down all the odd wallets and small exchanges to get value for the forks is going to vary person to person.

Anyway, the main reason I can see needing it is to prove you have "been in the game" for a while.
Trying to impress the newbies so to speak. If it's for a scam or just to posture would have to be seen.

Can you post a picture of it?
Does it look like this one?

If so then it's this one
https://www.cheetahminers.com/product/cheetah-miner-f5-66t/

You can try emailing their support but I never heard of them getting back to anyone.

If it's not post a picture and we can all take a look.

4225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin volatility on weekends on: May 30, 2021, 12:55:19 PM
Also, a lot of the larger fiat -> BTC exchanges don't move fiat on weekends.
I start a transfer from my bank to Coinbase ot Gemini anytime after noon on Friday I can't trade with it till Monday.
I do the same transfer Monday AM I can trade with it by Monday night.

YMMV based on account level and history but I'm sure that is also part of the slowdown.
Same with funds going out. I make a withdrawal from Coinbase Saturday AM, I get notification from my back Monday afternoon. I make the same withdrawal Monday AM I get the notification Monday afternoon. So I tend to do less trading over the weekend.

You might want to take a look in the Collectibles board https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0
There are people who are selling funded coins that go back a while.

The 4 year time frame you are looking for is going to be tough with just a 10% over since there is about 5%+ of value of forks on those coins and the value of the collectable itself.

There are probably a lot of people with mid to late 2018 wallets out there, after a lot of the forks calmed down.

Then you get to the really old stuff that is going to have an even higher premium on it because it's just cool having the earlier coins.

4227  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: My USB SHA256 lottery on: May 29, 2021, 11:24:23 AM
...  And it's weird that the prices of Gekkoscience miners and Moonlanders have shot up in the past year or so.  I'm not sure if they're becoming collectibles or if people are actually using them to do what you're doing (lottery mining)....

There are a few coins out there (mostly scrypt but some SHA) with very low difficulty but some liquidity where one or two people stick mining can actually generate some money.
Nothing real, but still $1 or so a day. The issue is that if someone comes in and hammers it one of them with an L3  / S9 or something "real" and then dumps. You have to go hunt down the next one, and find an exchange the has it, and a reliable pool. etc. I have a few smaller miners lottery mining but every once in a while I find something else that looks profitable and mine that for a bit.

@iwantmyhomepaidwithbtc hope you get lucky and find a block.

4228  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will it be possible to prevent monero mining centralization? And if so, how? on: May 29, 2021, 01:04:22 AM
Years ago when a pool was bumping up against the 50%+ hasrate of BTC mining, all of a sudden large numbers of miners left. People were worried about the possible consequences of the large amount of hashrate at one pool.
It has happened to many other coins over time. The better / larger coins tend to have people move their miners on their own. Sometimes people need to be poked a bit to have them move it.

I would say to increase the size of the dbcache in the bitcoin.conf file to speed up the initial blockchain download. It really helps a lot. But, I don't know how much free RAM there is on the box and what if any other tweaks @jstefanop made.

My unit came in yesterday, but I have been so busy at work I have not even had the time to take it out of the box Sad

Agree with Carlton but if you want to test anyway, let me know and I'll spin up one of nodes running c-lightning and get it updated. Might take a day or 2 since I have not been using them for a while.

Thanks Dave! The mempool is slowly clearing up, so I would appreciate if you could do it in your spare time. By the way, are you going to open any more channels in the near future? I would like to maintain channels with a few forum members but it would nice to improve my node's connectivity this way.

So I was going to do a bunch of things this week with some nodes and other hardware. Ordered some equipment to upgrade some things and move some other things.
I ordered some things from Amazon and some others from NewEgg.
Amazon stuff was supposed to arrive Tuesday. Now scheduled for Saturday....which means next Tuesday since the office building is locked over the weekend.
According to the tracking number the NewEgg stuff is still on their shipping dock so unless it's coming in overnight I guess it's all happening next week.

4232  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Iran bans Bitcoin too on: May 27, 2021, 11:31:32 AM
There is also the difference between banning something and doing something about the ban.

If they announce the ban, shutdown one or two small farms and then stop doing anything it's a lot different then shutting down any large farms and working their way down to the person running an old S3 in their home.

As has been said, unlike China they are not a big player in the BTC mining field at the moment so it's not going to do much to the hasrate.

4233  Economy / Reputation / Re: 1xbit is at it again with bounty and a signature campaign on: May 26, 2021, 08:05:14 PM
Probably never going to happen, but would be an interesting supply & demand experiment.

Or they'll just "cancel" the campaign after the application thread is flooded with scam warning posts. They get a few days of free promotion and can blame the "trolls".

Or, we all sign up and when they don't pay us we can all put a flag on all their accounts.
I know theymos thinks he is doing the correct thing in not moderating scams or nuking large parts of the forum that are a breeding ground for scammers, but sooner or later IMO having all this stuff festering here is going to hurt crypto.

4234  Economy / Reputation / Re: 1xbit is at it again with bounty and a signature campaign on: May 26, 2021, 12:46:42 PM
They seem to have a tradition now. try to launch your campaign about once a year. This time, they made a bid on post pay, raising it to a record $9 per post. Only what in this sense, at least $20 per post, but who will probably advertise this scam garbage. The 1xbit owner needs to resolve past reputation issues with scam accusations, but they don't think about it at all.

If they are stubborn to the end and will accept someone in their campaign, these participants will most likely be negatively marked in the trust.

Makes you wonder how other places will respond. Not to put too fine a point on it, if they actually do pay the $9 / post will the legitimate places feel any pressure to raise their rates.

Look at all the crap that the best change campaign got when they 1st opened, but over a year later they are still paying and going strong.

We all know 1x is crap, but if this week they get 19 bad alt accounts with their sig and 1 good one and they actually pay, then a few weeks later they have 18 bad alts and 2 good ones, etc.

Yeah, it requires that they pay but assuming that they have 20 legendary accounts only @ $140 a week that is still under $3000 a week. If they are really as big as they look and are not paying some players then it's pocket change.

All of a sudden, someone who is considered a "good bitcointalk user" needs some more money and figures screw it and sings up.

Probably never going to happen, but would be an interesting supply & demand experiment.

4235  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why China shut down mining farm? Carbon Emission. on: May 25, 2021, 11:19:04 PM
Quote
Inside China it is mainly distributed: Sichuan, summer from May to October, to use cheap hydro power; winter from October to April , in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, use Coal power.
Wow, they actually use coal for power?  I'm no expert on how our electrical grid is powered, but I thought most countries had done away with coal--please correct me if I'm way off base, which is quite possible.

I don't know what to make of this news either, since I don't really trust information coming out of China.  What I do know is that bitcoin miners aren't likely to give up mining, and if China makes it illegal they'll move their operations to another country where it's still legal to mine.  I know I've written that before, and I believe it was with respect to China as well, so I'm thinking this is probably a bunch of BS.

AT $60k+ BTC I was thinking about putting some S9 units back online.
You have cheap enough electricity where you live?  I thought your state (which I won't disclose) had pretty high utility rates.  Do you still mine bitcoin now and then?

The data center we use forces you to have 2 KVA per rack. I can have 1 RPi in the rack and it still comes with and we pay for 2KVA.
What is nice is that it is in aggregate so 4 racks 8KVa but I can have 2 with 3 and 2 with 1 and it's all good.

So, when we needed more space but not more power we got an extra 4KVa that I have been using to run some old servers for legitimate work.
BUT, it's just to make my life easier. When BTC was at $60k I was thinking of shutting them down and bringing in some S9s

With the above being said, I think it's important to note that there is probably a lot of small miners around that are in the same boat. They have power that they are "forced" to pay for so they mine with it.
Seriously, if we could have had those racks for less money but only 1 KVA you bet we would have taken it.

I have a client who has office space that has fixed electric costs based on space. He runs some GPU rigs since no matter how much he argued with the management company of the building, the power cost would not budge....so now instead of using 30% to 40% of the power they bill him for he is using 85% to 90% If he could figure how to be at 99% without the risk of going over and getting an extra bill you bet your ass he would be there adding GPUs.

4236  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing the FutureBit Apollo BTC - A Full Node/Mining Platform for the Home! on: May 25, 2021, 11:58:09 AM
I got a tracking # Grin The gear ⚙️  is due mon or tues next week.
Of course you'd get it first, since it's to their advantage to do that ... even if it is still well behind what they originally claimed ... lol

As for everyone else ...

...
Shipping will start at the end of April into May barring and major delays. Design is complete and we have running prototypes, and all major components including ASICs are on order. We have learned a bunch from our past launches and have built thousands of units so we dont anticipate any major setbacks. As always this is a pre-order so expect delays regardless.
...

And I forgot to mention that unlike everyone else FutureBit took PayPal for the order and they (PayPal credit not FutureBit) offered 6 months no interest on the purchase so even though I bought it back in Feb I'm still out of pocket under $100. But that's just me, obviously others may have used BTC or other methods of payment.

With the state of hardware at the moment, I can probably take it our of the box when it gets here take some pictures and make a profit on selling it.

4237  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why China shut down mining farm? Carbon Emission. on: May 25, 2021, 11:41:45 AM
This probably belongs more in mining speculation but we saw a 20%+ difficulty jump on the 13th, but that came after the 12% drop on the 1st, now if everything stays stable we are looking at about an 8% drop in a couple of days.
That looks more to me like the difficulty is moving with the price (with the 2 week delay of difficulty adjustment)

AT $60k+ BTC I was thinking about putting some S9 units back online.
At $40K- BTC I am thinking about pulling the S19 offline and selling it here.

How many other people wind up in the same loop?

Saying China is shutting down farms for carbon emissions is FUD at best.

Amazing all the things people still blame on covid and noob estimating skills, even though covid's been around for more than a year Smiley
...

I guess you don't deal with any sort of hardware, because deliveries are all over the place.
I order today, I get a scheduled delivery for end of June. By the middle of June I could have several delays already in the books and now and a late July date.
Intel / AMD / NVidia, Samsung, EVERYONE is having issues. So an under 30 day delay is not a big deal.

As for the pre-oders thing, so what, I don't think it's unreasonable for a small business not to have 1/2 a million dollars to put out there for hardware to wait to get paid on.
That's how I feel YMMV.
I'm only like ~20 miles from their NY location. I can always just go there and keep asking every 5 minutes, "is it done yet" if I had to.

For batch 2 it's the same 3 months give or take:

Batch 2 goes live tomorrow at 6PM EST FYI for whoever missed Batch 1. This batch will ship in July.

If you have time it might be worth actually replying back and asking for a demo.

Setup a disposable email account so it does not get mixed in with your regular one and only follow links they send from a machine that you can wipe afterwards, with no BTC / personal info on it in case the sites have malware that your AV does not catch.

This will waste the scammers time, and possibly get a bit more information about it.

That or just hit the delete button.

4240  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: May 24, 2021, 11:29:18 AM

with a fully-fledged server, you can run multiple lightning instances anyway. Maybe running 1 or 2 LND's will prove useful for different reasons, I'm not currently in your position where I have a decent enough machine to try.

Maybe keep the Pi as a local watchtower, powered (also the internet router) with a UPS? Or at some other location, of course.
I would rather keep a watchtower on a VPS versus trusting my local ISP to maintain sufficient uptime. While both are rare, my internet goes down more frequently than my power goes out. If you keep regular backups of information needed to maintain a watchtower, if your VPS goes down for whatever reason, you can easily spin up another VPS in another region or cloud provider and have it watching for old channel state closing transactions quickly. Or better yet, have multiple VPSs by multiple cloud providers always running.

Slightly OT to all of this but I was at my local Microcenter yesterday to pick up a few things and saw this:
https://www.microcenter.com/product/636691/lenovo-thinkcentre-m90n-1-mini-desktop-computer

Yes it's a bit outdated and more money then setting up a RPi or getting a used machine from eBay.
But it's tiny, has more then enough SSD storage, RAM and CPU (4C 8T) to run a full node, has space for a 2nd drive for mirroring, uses very little power.
It comes with Win10 Pro so it has Hyper-V if you want it.

And you can bury it under / behind something for security and nobody will know it's there.

Not saying you should run out and get one, but with hardware in general spiking up in price it's not a bad option.
