My favorite has become google.  Embarrassed yes, google.

You mean you don't use Winkdex?

Cameron and Tyler would be very disappointed in you.

 Wink
lol, yep. those guys hate me.
Although, that's not a bad layout they have. I just think their product is a diversion from bitcoin.

It was Napoleon Bonaparte!

Check this video.  Cheesy

4243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Who has the best valuation of current bitcoin price on: November 12, 2014, 08:54:38 PM
There are a lot of sources these days and while there is no standard current price, some are better than others. I think the best ones use a weighted average of exchange prices. My favorite has becom google.  Embarrassed yes, google. If you type "bitcoin price" in a search you can see it.

What do you use when you want to know how much BTC is worth in other (lesser) currencies?
4244  Economy / Speculation / Re: How can the market recover after a huge dump? on: November 12, 2014, 08:45:33 PM
There is only supply and demand. So any increase in supply will drive down price. That is how it is supposed to work.  Bitcoin does not need our money and will work as a payment network no matter what the price is. That is why the bitcoin price always recovers. Stocks may not recover because the company that issued the stock does need your money to keep solvent.

It will cause utter havoc. If there is greater adoption and some mentally ill whale tries to dump 50k coins, we are in trouble.
It would be havoc. But it is a temporary situation and if you keep your cool, it is very profitable. Fear is my best friend in the market and when you see panic selling you know it's time to buy.
4245  Economy / Speculation / Re: PANIC BUY NOW or cry tomorrow on: November 12, 2014, 08:41:47 PM
Smart traders don't buy at this point, as they already bought below or just over $300  Cool
Agreed. I was buying when the price was falling. It's spending time now!

lol, crappy shit "news".

Info wars does a great job of getting people to look at ads. They do not, however, do any kind of actual reporting.  Cheesy

I knew there were some pitfalls, this coming from Obama. Nice chew-down, Wilikon.

I don't think you understand what is at stake. You have net-neutrality now and it is about to go away. Don't worry, your new media nanny will tell you what to watch. Just like you are told by the republicans what to think.

If it was a typo the good news is that your not starting from scratch. Keep trying combinations with similar letters / numbers.
4252  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Consciousness and Quantum Physics on: November 12, 2014, 04:37:56 PM
I agree with your sentiments, but had to comment about the rather strong new-age taste of the Penrose article because of it's inability to form testable hypothesis, and in particular, the use of poorly defined terms to which effects were glibly attributed.

It's certainly true that at many levels of inorganic and organic, sentient and non sentient systems we see what might be called "tendencies toward organization" which are pretty much unexplained.

This is a different question, though; it addresses the biological origin of consciousness.  I would comment that is secondary and of little importance.  We can model activity of a neuron or an amoeba.  Theoretically, given a large enough stack of paper punched cards (might exceed the atoms of the universe of course) we could model a conscious entity with punched cards.

So what would you have then, a conscious deck of cards?

Just don't play poker with it and you'll be fine....

Good points. I can't really defend their work, I just posted it because it seems related to the title. I also have a bias. The intersection of Physics and biology is what I am most interested in. My Physics friends always want a "unified theory" that unites quantum and relativity. As I biologist I don't think you have anything until you can explain what life is. This was a rare attempt to explain how life works and so I'm a sucker for that stuff.

Whatever life is, it sure must be a harder problem than chemicals and electricity. By the 1950s most scientists thought we would be creating life from scratch by now. So far it seems life only happened once.

4254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stuxnet and bitcoin... on: November 12, 2014, 04:22:17 PM
I think Stux could be modified to do something like this.

Not really. It simply doesn't make sense...

Quote
The stux worm released on Iran was very sophisticated

It was nothing exceptional. ...

My understanding of Stux is that it had a powerful basic core that included at least two zero day exploits. That is rare and why I consider it to be sophisticated. This basic code was then elaborately modified to target specific hardware. The primary targets were Iranian uranium enrichment centrifuges. These could be destroyed by spinning them at a particular speed that caused them to wobble and fall over.
4255  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: November 11, 2014, 09:41:14 PM
The WHO hasn't published status reports for many days now. Anyway, no reliable data is available for both Liberia and Sierra Leone, where entire villages are being wiped out from the map due to Ebola.
Creepy huh, I have never seen such big gaps in the raw data. I guess a lot of places are now inaccessible?

4257  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama's Net Neutrality Statement: What it Really Means on: November 11, 2014, 09:30:09 PM
very nice post RodeoX. However I have to disagree, something wanting my money is already oppressive to me Roll Eyes.

Thanks. I don't like their greed either.  Angry
At least for the moment we have some choice of competitors. These are many of the same people from cable TV. Look at how good they were at milking that system. If your old like me you might remember that cable TV was originally marketed as "Never watch a commercial again!". Now it's just commercials with a few short breaks for programs.

Oh and thanks stevegreer.
4258  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama's Net Neutrality Statement: What it Really Means on: November 11, 2014, 09:14:37 PM
I don't think that the current attempt by ISPs and big media are "evil" they do not want to oppress you. They want your money.
The problem for them with the internet is that you have control over it. They would much prefer a system where the ISP controls what you see. That way they maximize their profits by directing you to businesses that have already bought you from the ISP. Nothing has to be free under this system. If you want to visit certain sites then you will pay more. Want the full internet, it's $200 per month. Want a walled garden your ISP made. $50. etc. Maybe pay by the webpage? Whatever your media overlords decide.
Remember how shitty America online was? That is the model that ISPs and places like Time-Warner want to see. You have net-neutrality now. What Obama is proposing is to secure that status legally. I really don't see how anyone but a media giant would want anything else. The internet was not built by ISPs, it was built from the ground up by users and now the ISPs want to take it for themselves. F-that.

4259  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Consciousness and Quantum Physics on: November 11, 2014, 08:56:09 PM
That new age stuff is garbage. But... There is an interesting theory to connect consciousness with quantum states. It's real science from Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose. This work is early and will change as more is known, however they are proposing that life itself is a quantum phenomena and linked to consciousness. It's the best theory so far to explain living things.

http://www.quantumconsciousness.org/penrose-hameroff/orchOR.html

Really, it looks like more new age garbage to me....
I know what you mean, it's way out there and may turn out to be plain wrong. But Penrose is no slouch. He is one of the worlds top scientists. I am interested because there are so few theories to explain living things and this one at least has some explainable process. the basic idea is that all life is conscious at some level and that is what makes life different from non-life. Hameroff is a professor of anesthesiology and was initially interested in thought and consciousness. He points out that what you heard in school about thinking being an effect of neurons working together is know to be wrong. An amoeba can hunt, hide, move away from pain, etc. It is doing some thinking, but it is only one cell and has no neurons. Something else is happening and it could be a quantum effect in the cytoskeleton of living cells.

Whatever the real answer to life is it will be mindblowing. That is why I'm not writing this theory off yet. Even though some scientists are very skeptical of this work.

That new age stuff is garbage. But...

Yeah I've read a bit about Penrose, I'm not sure about his idea that human thought and consciousness cannot be explained through known scientific effects, so he says it must be a result of unknown quantum effects. Seems like a pretty outrageous claim without some really good evidence (but I will read some more about his work, as I'm not very familiar with it.
I don't know either. But I am a biologist and I also don't know what life really is?  Huh
4260  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama's Net Neutrality Statement: What it Really Means on: November 11, 2014, 08:37:28 PM
If he fails on this the internet as you know it is dead. This is the freedom fight of our lives and hardly anyone understands why.

Wait, so are you saying that if he does not get his way that the internet as we know it will die and our freedoms will be gone? You think that having the government regulate (control) the internet is going to save us? Kinda like how the Chinese, Iranian and North Korean governments are ensuring a protected internet for its citizens by controlling their access? All this will do is open the door for the government to be able to collect private data on citizens without having to get a search warrant first. Of course Obama is talking this up like he is doing us all a favor and that it's a good thing. And all the blind sheep are eating this deception up like Halloween candy.
Obama: "All of your internets are belong to us!"

It's not the gov controlling the internet, it's keeping business from controlling it.
It would mean the loss of net neutrality. What you see on the internet could be whatever your ISP decides. Let's say your ISP is Charter.com. They have a service called charter on demand. Well, they won't want you watching free videos or using some other service so they could throttle back your bandwith except for their movie service. They could also make it very hard to visit a site that does not make them money. Search for how to fix your car and you are directed to a car dealership that has paid charter to get you.

Loss of net neutrality is probably the greatest threat to bitcoin as well. It really would be possible and maybe even profitable to block access to bitcoin. The days of going where you want on the net would be over you will see what is most profitable for your ISP. And the dark web? Why would your ISP let you see that? In fact if your ISP was religiously oriented why would they allow you to see anything that is not Godly? It is really up to them not you.
