4261  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FPGA Miners? on: February 10, 2012, 01:09:16 PM
What I don't understand is why anyone would buy them besides shits and giggles. Maybe if you're really limited on space/heat/noise and REALLY want to be a miner.
At $600 for 360mhash you can build a $600 rig that makes you twice as much money. Pays itself off twice as fast. That's including electricity costs. There's very little resale value which means a lot more risk. Maybe I'm missing something.
The biggest bonus I see is FPGA making you money when BTC is under $1.50 USD. If BTC is that low, I'm not feeling good about my FPGA investment regardless.

Well, some people, especially in the EU have very expensive electricity ($0.25+/kWh), from what I am reading on these forums a lot of people is US pay $0.10 or less..

seriously, i have only had to turn on the heat once for this winter, and it's because the internet was down!

Same here but it happened to me twice so far Wink

1000W can be too little for overclocked 5870s, I would try 1200W, extenders only if powered (especially if the mobo is cheap), if you can try to connect as many cards directly through 6-pin pci-e connectors, not molex-pcie (and if you do use connectors that use two molex cables for each pcie connector) or sata-pcie.

Are you mining 24/7 with this laptop?

multi-rail gpus scare me because I never know if I'm load balancing correctly; i'd rather just spend the extra $30 to get a single rail psu that does 100 amps on 12v

i agree..

Just lookin to speed up the process of getting rolling..

can anyone provide me with any information on how to tell which cables are run off which rails and what not?

You could contact the manufacturer but other than that I think trial and error is the only way to find out.

Google also had custom PSU built for their datacenter years ago but that was back when avg ATX PSU was 70% efficient.

Given what % of PCs (most of them) are sold with chinese crap PSUs (not necessarily no-name but of similar quality) with an avg. efficiency of 40-60% I think some time has to pass when an average ATX PSU is 70% efficient.

Forget having to go to Bank of America to use BitInstant through CryptoXChange to deposit into an exchange, make bids and finally withdraw some bitcoins. Being able to drop cash, get coins would bring Bitcoin to the masses.

How about a website that not only lets you deposit cash and instantly get Bitcoins at any bank in the US...but will get you the best price possible since we have reservers at every exchange.

Give us 3 weeks...

-Charlie,
BitInstant.com

Will you support other countries too? I am specifically talking about EU here ;-)

Do you intend to become in the future a competition to Bitcoinica?

I can't add any pools or workers - the changes aren't saved, any ideas on how to solve this?

I underclock my phenom 3Ghz to 800mhz and turn off all cores but 1 and there is still excessive headroom. 50mhz would probably be more than enough (if the OS doesnt choke)

I dont think you'll manage to boot with 50MHz even on bamt or other mining-capable linux, you could underclocked after booting but not too much as it won't be stable.

Buy Cooler Master, Corsair, Seasonic, Enermax, Sparkle, or PC Power & Cooling.

Cooler Master are average, you can also add some chieftecs (high-end ones), OCZ ZX and Be Quiet.

I think the wives will pay off quickly if you open a brothel..
4274  Economy / Goods / Re: Ebay Feedback for sales on: February 07, 2012, 02:30:58 PM

Ebay reputation is more valuable to me than bitcointalk's heroes tag by a HUGE margin. Especially if it's 100+

What about chargebacks by these peoples' paypal accounts after buying bitcoins? You can read about it in the forums or ask bitmarket.eu admins.

Actually it's worthless. How many heroes members were tagged as scammers? I can easily find 10+.

Which ones?
And what did they get first: the scammer tag or the hero member rank?

4276  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1500W psu for $133 I assume it fail?? on: February 06, 2012, 10:26:04 PM
Still, I why put a rig full of perfectly good 5970 cards at the PSU's mercy?
All hardware will fail, the protection circuit is no exception.
[/quote]

Like it or not but you are doing it all the time - power supplies have plenty other things to fail at, this is why we all miners buy high-quality PSUs (1kW $50 or 400W for $10 noname / cheap Chinese brand* is not something I use even for non-mining hardware).

*the best and expensive PSUs are also manufactured in China but the quality and price is different : P

4277  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Using unpowered PCI-E 1x extender for 5970 possible? on: February 06, 2012, 09:54:47 PM
PCIe slot: 30W

Was that max. you got for PCI-E? I can't really measure it myself but someone on the forum mentioned it only pulls up to 75W for a few seconds after pressing power_sw (to start the GPU) and I'm not sure to what extent it's true.
4278  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 1500W psu for $133 I assume it fail?? on: February 06, 2012, 09:50:39 PM
It's not the resistance that worries me, you're going far out of spec with the sata connector.
A sata power connector has three 12V contacts. THe manufacturer's load limit per contact is 1.5 A.
That's just 4.5 Amps for the 12 line resulting in the connector's max load at mediocre 54 Watts.

If (heaven forbid) you try the sata -> molex -> pcie 8-pin combo be sure to have a fire extinguisher at the ready.
The melting connector can short circuit and kill the PSU. If the built-in protections are inadequate, the PSU can kill the whole rig. Definitely not the prudent path to take.

That's another thing but 8-pin connectors will always (?) have at least two molex connectors, there are many 6-pin connectors with two molex connectors so it should be enough.
As for the built-in protections only cheap PSUs will take anything along with them at their death.
4279  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: POLL: What temps & fan speeds do you maintain for 24/7 mining? on: February 06, 2012, 05:51:05 PM
GPU temperature -> the lower the better (less leakage currents -> reduced power consumption)
fan speed -> the lower the better (cheap sleeve bearings...)

So I've recently put my rigs on the balcony, got me into the range of 40-60% fan speed and 30-50 °C GPU temp (before: 70-100% and 60-80 °C), reducing the total power (at the wall) by more than 10%.

People placing their rigs on balconies/outside have no issues with humidity (not to mention rain, etc.)? I was wondering if I could do that but it is too cold outside now (-18C at noon, up to -25C at night)
4280  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What temperatures do you keep your GPUs at ? on: February 06, 2012, 02:09:40 PM
I am referring to longevity.
Is it OK if they are at about 70 degrees Celsius 24/7 or should I increase the fan speed to keep them at 60 degrees or lower ( fan is less expensive if it dies compared to GPU core electromigrating ).
At what temperatures would you consider running your cards 24/7 as a dedicated miner ?
What temperature is needed to avoid electromigration ?
Thank you !

I don't think it is possible avoid electromigration but it doesn't mean the GPU will die, it may just operate only on stock clocks and voltages if you are unlucky.
For me it is <100C for VRM (all are <90C), <90C for rest (everything is <85C), except GPU, none of mine exceed 80C. But VRMs can sustain 105-140C and GPUs around 100-110C. But these temperatures will affect longevity Tongue
