4261  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does the epidemic have a big impact on Bitcoin? on: June 03, 2021, 12:12:02 PM
I am probably against the popular view and say that overall it has had a very small impact.
A lot of people had major financial issues and had to sell their BTC / crypto to survive.
Others who had extra money do to government support bought some because they could.
Probably very close to a balanced amount of money.

The run up and then the small correction we just had are part of the normal cycle.

...
Wouldn't Docker image more efficient in this case? ...

Possibly but...while we are drifting far OT from the original post VM vs Container is not IMO that simple.

Running on my main workstation at the office Which is Win 10 I have VMs that include Win10, UBU 18, UBU 16 and a CentOS box.

If you know every thing you are going to play with can share a common OS then Docker is good. But if you are booting and testing / using a lot of different things then you are back to VMs

It's like the Hyper-V vs. VMWare argument. There are many things that either one does better then the other. But trying to get someone to "switch sides" is like fighting a holy war.

4263  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Block explorers oligopoly. on: June 02, 2021, 07:03:21 PM
Setting up bitcoind & mynode/Esplora/iquidus (these block explorer names can be a PITA to remember sometimes) on Virtualbox and then copying the VDI file somewhere to use as a template later should also function as a sort of image, no?

Yes, but this was a prepacked install.
nginx as a reverse proxy
let's encrypt installed
etc.
It really was boot...edit a few config files...drink beer.

But, I remember there were some issues that I was going to look at "tomorrow" but never got to.
Had not even thought about it till I saw this thread.

4264  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Yobit Scam Accusation megathread. "Normal" modus operandi or shady practices? on: June 02, 2021, 02:51:20 PM
Yobit continues to list sexcoin tons of coins drawing in unsuspecting investors who then can't withdraw.

Fixed your post a bit  Grin
There are at least 25 coins that you can deposit at least occasionally but can never withdraw.
There are coins that at times, deposits & withdraws are opened but they never actually send or credit the coins.

Sadly there are people who should know better who get burned by this.

4265  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Block explorers oligopoly. on: June 02, 2021, 01:49:31 PM
1) Most PCs these days have virtualization turned on by default.

Really? I usually found it's turned off by default. Additionally on Windows, you might have problem with Hyper-V (if you use VirtualBox.

Guess it depends on the maker or model line.
Just about all the Dell workstations I have worked on in the last 10 years have had it turned on by default.
Since that is 90%+ of what I deal with I thought it was universal.

Also know a bit how to secure your server.

But I wouldn't run a block explorer in a VM in the first place, you lose the opportunity to utilize hyperthreading and all those extra threads the explorer could've used.

Both true.

Still looking for the explorer in a box that I mentioned above. I know I downloaded it and ran it. No idea where I put the image or if I even saved it or if it was a VHD / VHDX / VDI or some other format.
Being a data hoarder can be a pain at times.

4266  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Aged Bitcoins Service / Premium? on: June 01, 2021, 09:34:13 PM
Did a quick calculation of BCH+BSV+BTG and came up with a bit over 2.5% ($875 at the time) and then just figured the dozens of the other crap forks would add together to get to about the same.
My estimate for the value of the other crap forks is "close to zero". Many don't have a working wallet, decent exchange, or trading volume.

Had some time today where I could not do any work but had to be available.
So I poked around at the other forks and if there are working wallets and exchanges.
Here are the quick and easy ones:

As of now 1 BTC is worth $36346.85
If you had 1 BTC before the BCH fork you have:
1 BCH = $685
1 BSV = $173
1 BTG = $59
1 BCHA = $19
10 BCD = $2.70 each so $27.00
10k BCH = $0.0015 each so $15.00
1 GOD = $7.00
500 RHOM = $3.60

There were a bunch more forks probably close to 15 that were active and had wallets and exchanges but all were under $2.00 most were under $0.5
So yes, @LoyceV was correct not worth it. Unless you really really really have a lot of time and no money....

I've been curious about running block explorers for a while and haven't really looked into it. I hope this is as easy as you say it is. Do you know if I can host this publicly (that's my long-term goal).

If you are using the mynode node in a box

I can either go with yes.....with a but.
Or
No.....with a however.

The web side of mynode.com is not particularly secured.
The explorer by default is not on a standard port.
and if gets hammered with traffic, since it's not particularity efficient it will not keep up.

I don't know how well you know linux but another simple one to install is https://github.com/iquidus/explorer
You need to know a bit but not a lot.

4268  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Official FutureBit Apollo BTC Software/Image and Support thread on: June 01, 2021, 02:20:59 PM
...Alas this statement is completely false and thus shows that indeed these miners have not been tested to be able to find blocks...

KDB upgrade will be today for the rest of the solo code.

Most of it is already live but I ended up writing a testing program to simplify comparing shift data in the database against shift data in the share log files.
Previously I'd do manual checks and balances to make sure things were OK, but with this solo change I've made a lot of changes in the code involved in processing shifts (internally called the markersummary table), so for the final step (over the last week or so) I've written a completely separate program to do the full shift process of a range of log files to compare against the database.

This will of course also simplify future change tests, like the blocksummary code mentioned before, that is in the live code but never enabled, that is one of the next updates that I'll do.

Solo will be switched on soon after the update.

Edit: you can now switch a new account to solo.
See Help->Solo first.
You'll get an Accounts->Solo menu item when you login to a new account, if your account is within the time limit.

So before you deployed this you went out and got enough miners and mined till your new code found a block?
Otherwise how do we know that you didn't make a mistake somewhere and the fact that your pool has not found a block in 10+ months is because it can't find one due to buggy code.

When you and Luke had your fight years ago I actually figured you were in the right, but since I really don't like people who push religion my view might have been skewed.
Then you had the falling out with CK-
Now you are here campaigning against someone who is making hardware.

I'm really starting to think it's you.

Things I CAN say 100% about the products that  @jstefanop makes
1) The Apollo CAN find blocks for lower difficulty SHA coins that are compiled against older versions of bitcoin. Can't speak to 20.x +
2) His Scrypt miners found blocks with no issues.

Also, this is a support thread. If you have an issue post in the other thread.

4269  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Block explorers oligopoly. on: June 01, 2021, 01:31:52 PM
Since i've tried myNode in past, you still need to learn to setting up something (although it's easier). Few examples (if you use myNode on VM),
1. Enable CPU virtualization on BIOS.
2. Configure VirtualBox to connect myNode with your USB external HDD/SSD.
3. Other optional stuff which mentioned on guide page (https://www.mynodebtc.com/guides).

1) Most PCs these days have virtualization turned on by default.
2) Only if you have it on an external drive. My mynode is running all on my "D" drive on my Windows box.
3) True.

And although not 100% simple the regular updates are much easier to do as opposed to upgrading something you put together yourself.

I have to see if I can find it, I have a vague memory of a couple of years ago someone creating an explorer in a box using the bitpay insight explorer.

If you want to run a block explorer but don't want to get into setting up a database or learning how, there are some "nodes in a box" out there that have them.
All you need is some bandwidth, the available storage space and a computer that can run a base VM and you can install some of them. Others work on a RPi

https://www.mynodebtc.com/ is one of the more popular ones.

4271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can unconfirmed transactions be automatically cancelled by RBF on: May 31, 2021, 08:34:44 PM
Any RBF transaction you broadcast must pay both a higher fee rate and a higher absolute fee than not just the transaction it is replacing, but of all the transactions which would be evicted from the mempool if it were to be accepted. So if an unconfirmed transaction has several unconfirmed children, then you would need to add together the total fee paid by all of them and set your RBF transaction to have a higher fee than that, and not just a higher fee than the parent transaction you are replacing.

I thought it was just the fee for the inputs that came from the parent transaction. You are saying that it is the fee for the entire child transaction.
Learn something new everyday.
Kind of handy if someone sends you a RBF transaction with a low fee, you can 'lock' it by adding a bunch of dust inputs if you have them and also sending with a low fee so they can't just RBF it without paying to move your dust.

The 4 year time frame you are looking for is going to be tough with just a 10% over since there is about 5%+ of value of forks on those coins and the value of the collectable itself.
The Fork-value is closer to around 2.5% of the Bitcoin value. But since collectibles have to be physically delivered, I doubt this is what OP is looking for.

Did a quick calculation of BCH+BSV+BTG and came up with a bit over 2.5% ($875 at the time) and then just figured the dozens of the other crap forks would add together to get to about the same.
If it's worth the time to someone to put in the time, and if they have the ability to track down all the odd wallets and small exchanges to get value for the forks is going to vary person to person.

Anyway, the main reason I can see needing it is to prove you have "been in the game" for a while.
Trying to impress the newbies so to speak. If it's for a scam or just to posture would have to be seen.

4273  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: taurus miner on: May 30, 2021, 01:55:44 PM
Can you post a picture of it?
Does it look like this one?

If so then it's this one
https://www.cheetahminers.com/product/cheetah-miner-f5-66t/

You can try emailing their support but I never heard of them getting back to anyone.

If it's not post a picture and we can all take a look.

4274  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin volatility on weekends on: May 30, 2021, 12:55:19 PM
Also, a lot of the larger fiat -> BTC exchanges don't move fiat on weekends.
I start a transfer from my bank to Coinbase ot Gemini anytime after noon on Friday I can't trade with it till Monday.
I do the same transfer Monday AM I can trade with it by Monday night.

YMMV based on account level and history but I'm sure that is also part of the slowdown.
Same with funds going out. I make a withdrawal from Coinbase Saturday AM, I get notification from my back Monday afternoon. I make the same withdrawal Monday AM I get the notification Monday afternoon. So I tend to do less trading over the weekend.

You might want to take a look in the Collectibles board https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=217.0
There are people who are selling funded coins that go back a while.

The 4 year time frame you are looking for is going to be tough with just a 10% over since there is about 5%+ of value of forks on those coins and the value of the collectable itself.

There are probably a lot of people with mid to late 2018 wallets out there, after a lot of the forks calmed down.

Then you get to the really old stuff that is going to have an even higher premium on it because it's just cool having the earlier coins.

4276  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: My USB SHA256 lottery on: May 29, 2021, 11:24:23 AM
...  And it's weird that the prices of Gekkoscience miners and Moonlanders have shot up in the past year or so.  I'm not sure if they're becoming collectibles or if people are actually using them to do what you're doing (lottery mining)....

There are a few coins out there (mostly scrypt but some SHA) with very low difficulty but some liquidity where one or two people stick mining can actually generate some money.
Nothing real, but still $1 or so a day. The issue is that if someone comes in and hammers it one of them with an L3  / S9 or something "real" and then dumps. You have to go hunt down the next one, and find an exchange the has it, and a reliable pool. etc. I have a few smaller miners lottery mining but every once in a while I find something else that looks profitable and mine that for a bit.

@iwantmyhomepaidwithbtc hope you get lucky and find a block.

4277  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Will it be possible to prevent monero mining centralization? And if so, how? on: May 29, 2021, 01:04:22 AM
Years ago when a pool was bumping up against the 50%+ hasrate of BTC mining, all of a sudden large numbers of miners left. People were worried about the possible consequences of the large amount of hashrate at one pool.
It has happened to many other coins over time. The better / larger coins tend to have people move their miners on their own. Sometimes people need to be poked a bit to have them move it.

4278  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Review on apollo btc miner on: May 28, 2021, 06:07:54 PM
I would say to increase the size of the dbcache in the bitcoin.conf file to speed up the initial blockchain download. It really helps a lot. But, I don't know how much free RAM there is on the box and what if any other tweaks @jstefanop made.

My unit came in yesterday, but I have been so busy at work I have not even had the time to take it out of the box Sad

4279  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The Lightning Network FAQ on: May 27, 2021, 10:51:31 PM

Agree with Carlton but if you want to test anyway, let me know and I'll spin up one of nodes running c-lightning and get it updated. Might take a day or 2 since I have not been using them for a while.

Thanks Dave! The mempool is slowly clearing up, so I would appreciate if you could do it in your spare time. By the way, are you going to open any more channels in the near future? I would like to maintain channels with a few forum members but it would nice to improve my node's connectivity this way.

So I was going to do a bunch of things this week with some nodes and other hardware. Ordered some equipment to upgrade some things and move some other things.
I ordered some things from Amazon and some others from NewEgg.
Amazon stuff was supposed to arrive Tuesday. Now scheduled for Saturday....which means next Tuesday since the office building is locked over the weekend.
According to the tracking number the NewEgg stuff is still on their shipping dock so unless it's coming in overnight I guess it's all happening next week.
<sigh>
