Heh ok. I think you give these bots way too much credit.
And what about all the human traders that are better than you should they have to pay extra fees?

In case you haven't noticed, there are increasing amounts of complaints about Mt.Gox's website being inaccessible during the prime buying moments.  Bots are affecting MtGox's viability as a trading forum and also making their charts inaccurate representations of the market.

It's not just bots placing fake orders which distorts the market depth.  The other day someone complained that a buy order they'd placed at 7.00 almost executed because they had trouble logging on quickly to remove it when the price was in freefall.
4262  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: just posted on mybitcoin.com on: August 08, 2011, 04:30:14 AM
Dear god. This is GENIUS! You know that people are watching the Bitcoins they sent to mybitcoin, so to safely spend them, you give half of them back so it's impossible to know which withdraws are legit and which were stolen.

Plus nobody's going to push for official auditing and liquidation of the LLC because they're scared that the fees associated with going that route would reduce the eventual payout percentage as well as delay the process.  It's very clever if you can have the people you owe being against your company being put under formal scrutiny.
4263  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: just posted on mybitcoin.com on: August 08, 2011, 01:25:38 AM
75K bitcoins stolen? That's horrible. If we say that we sell them at an average price of 7, that's almost a half million USD (525000 USD).

So do you really believe that some hacker stole these coins? Or is it an insider job?

Huh.. devasting actually. How could we prevent this in the future?

It's definitely going to suck for anyone who bought at a high price -they'll now have half as many Bitcoins and those they've got left are worth a whole lot less.

They used Privacy Shark and its owner Dalin Owen recommended Morning Star Holdings (a Nevis corporation mill) to them.  It's doubtful that anyone will disclose any information about the actual owner of Mybitcoin without an order from a Nevis court because these services are set up precisely to offer safe haven from legal actions.

Why would a business ask a web host for advice on where to incorporate?
That whole statement is ridiculous.

Because Privacy Shark is just one of the very many services set up in Nevis to allow the true owners of corporate entities to hide their identities.  It's kind of like if you have a shady accountant and want to find a shady lawyer you might ask your accountant for a recommendation.  Privacy Shark registers domains for people who want their ownership of those domains hidden and Morning Star registers LLCs for people who want their ownership of those corporations hidden.  They're both part of the same industry and there's probably a lot of cross-referral.

What's not clear is whether the original intention was simply to hide business activity and assets from authorities or to defraud service users.  Dalin Owen obviously knows more than he's revealed so far but there's no reason to assume that he's going to disclose anything further without either a subpoena or an arrest warrant being produced.

Peer1 hosting: Domain history shows that as of it as having once been hosted at The Planet on 174.123.134.92 http://dnshistory.org/domainhistory/a/mybitcoin.com. http://dawhois.com/site/mybitcoin.com.html This is corroberated by an email received by a customer on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 16:02:04 -0700 (PDT) http://pastebin.com/Aw8NGG0P
It appears that sometime between June and August, the hosting moved from The Planet to Peer1. Following the shutdown on July 29th it seems to have moved to LeaseWeb at 83.149.112.133

Has anybody with a http://www.domaintools.com/ account tried the "Hosting History" feature on mybitcoin.com? It apparently can show the history of IP addresses that the website was hosted from. Maybe it was hosted somewhere other than Leasweb in the early days and they have some information about the account holder.

All of that information is on the bitcoin crime unit page.

Their move to Leaseweb was a recent one.
4267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 07, 2011, 07:31:03 AM
mybitcoin is stalling for time.

They have no contact information available and are not communicating (although they are watching these forums).

They have said there will be a claims process but they've not done anything.

From the information provided, on the technical side their story doesn't add up.

I vote for continuing to attempt to uncover the real identity of Tom Williams. It seems this is the only reason he made a statement at all.

Nefario.

There's some updated information here.

4268  Economy / Economics / Re: Could price collapse cause btc businesses to go belly up? on: August 07, 2011, 06:44:25 AM
I mostly agree with you, but i think a plausible case can be made for some banking crisis effect.

Consider mybitcoin. Many businesses are supposed to have held deposits there. If mybitcoin sells off their btc, then price will fall. If the busnisses need to sell btc to pay off USD debts, then price will fall some more. Granted the volumes involved are small compared to the total supply of btc, but the volume of btc actively traded on exchanges is also small.

If folks are smart they won't drop their btc, but hold on to their btc so that when the market comes back they'll be rich. Just my 2 cents.

It's pretty clear from the number of posts from people complaining when their withdrawals are delayed that a significant number of people do rely on selling Bitcoins and having rapid access to the proceeds of those sales.  People in that situation probably can't afford to hold in anticipation of a rebound, whether they're businesses or individuals.
4269  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: lost Mtgox bitcoin withdrawal on: August 06, 2011, 11:29:56 PM
If miners are taking a break while the price is low, that's going to slow down transaction confirmations as well.

If he's not incorporated, he can be sued for his personal assets and cash by anyone and everyone who lost bitcoins from this.  I encourage people to take this route once more of his information is revealed, and if he does not fully reimburse every single person who used the service.
MyBitcoin is Limited Liability Company, i.e. owners don't take any liability for company's debts. In this case maximum you can get suing them is corporation's assets.

Their website says they're an LLC, but has anyone seen the paperwork?  I'm guessing no, since if they had there would probably be a way to track down the owner(s).

Nevis doesn't require the names of the actual owners or beneficiaries to be listed anywhere in the paperwork.  Given just how many companies are registered to that same PO box and street address and the fact that Meridian Trust (which acts as agents for shell companies) appears in the whois information for Mybitcoin, I doubt that information about the true owners appears anywhere in the LLC records.

I've done a bit of research over the last few days and there are any number of company agents who'll set up LLCs in Nevis complete with a company agent and an off-shore bank account (which can be in Panama, Belize, Nevis or other safe havens) for under $2000.  One of their big selling points is that Nevis courts don't enforce judgements from foreign courts, and that Nevis law prohibits the disclosure of information about the owners/beneficiaries of certain types of legal entities.  A Nevis court can probably force a company agent to disclose that information, but I'm guessing that the company agents would fight very hard against any such action in order to keep their reputation as being IRS-proof intact.
4271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 06, 2011, 08:15:48 AM
I don't have a dog in this fight but the wording of the statement is a bit odd.  Total liabilities vs assets is going to come out as a different percentage than Bitcoins on hand vs Bitcoins which should be on hand as it's going to include other creditors - which means that a portion of the Bitcoins they still have on hand might be liquidated to pay those other creditors a percentage of what they're owed.

While receivership raises its own set of issues, their backing away from it raises big red flags because it means that no external party is going to be overseeing the whole process of them paying back depositors - you're going to be left having to take their word about the state of their balance sheet (and at this point it would be insane to take their word about anything).
4272  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin Back Up! (with a press release) on: August 06, 2011, 07:42:22 AM
I'm not sure who's still collecting information and trying to tie everything together but the goon detectives have found some connections I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere.

The Charity Cars thing is definitely him - there's a photo of him in the profile (different photo than his avatar here).  The other messageboard posts seem to be him also, they refer to the same "accomplishments" he's listed here.

His ringing endorsement of Mybitcoin on this page cracks me up.

Thanks guys,
Thats what I was thinking, the name you guys have become familiar with was just a agent they use. He woould already have a copy of that agents resignation in hand for the day he wants to take control and cash out. That's how they work.

Yep, and the company can be dissolved without the identity of the real owners ever being disclosed.

One thing which surprised me was just how cheap it is to set up a Nevis LLC, complete with an agent acting as manager/director and an off-shore bank account (which can be in Belize or Panama rather than Nevis).  It only costs about USD 2000.00 to set it up.
4276  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin Back Up! (with a press release) on: August 05, 2011, 07:45:28 PM
What company are you talking about? Did mybitcoin.com have company registered in Nevis? Please provide a link if you have any...

Mybitcoin itself seems to be an LLC registered in Nevis.

Meridian Trust - which which shows up in its whois history - and Morning Star holdings are company agents/trustees for shelf companies. There are a lot of similar services in Nevis which act as the registered agents for people wanting to hide the identity of the real owners of off-shore companies.

4277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox / exchanges should confirm bigger transactions by phone/SMS on: August 05, 2011, 10:36:38 AM
The yubikey pretty much does the same thing as an SMS token would and it's probably more cost effective from MtGox's point of view.  The international SMS thing can be a bit of a problem, with not all carriers supporting some types of SMS (this used to be an issue with Twitter), and phone calls would be both expensive and impractical.
4278  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Im just been attacked and robbed on my MT Gox account on: August 05, 2011, 09:40:44 AM
I just tried connecting to both of those IPs.  Got a log in screen asking for a username and password on 115.133.198.86 with the message "the server says TD-8817".  The other IP didn't resolve for me.
4279  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MyBitcoin Back Up! on: August 05, 2011, 09:13:14 AM
Hope this isn't true.
Then the Tom Williams impostor can create a claim page installing loads of shit on your computer.

One more reason to wait and see whether there's any statement forthcoming naming a receiver.

Tom Williams announces to the world that we was "in shock" for a few days  because his site was hacked

i believe that in between the date the site went down and this post was posted. he sold all the bitcoin! and that's why bitcoin was slowly going down all week
That was a troll and proved so by the fact that the account claiming to be the real owner PGP signed all his previous messages.  Haven't seen an official post since the event.

There's a new announcement on Mybitcoin itself.  There's a sticky thread about it at the top of the forum.
