Can you use bridges with the brave browser tor window?

It'll be interesting to see if you can get some of your old projects up and running. did you get anywhere with accorders again it might be interesting to try and use that with a few people.
It'll be good to see "talker" posting again on fit to talk too. You could use some of the very helpful content mbyzico (I think that was his name) gave us about venezuela.

I haven't tried the tor tab within brave (i do use brave for certain tasks) but can't seem to figure where you configure it. Ironically obfuscated bridges are needed in Venezuela to visit censored pages, without that its useless, direct tor connections are blocked by the Maduro regime.

Also i don't particularly like each browser spawning (yet) another tor instance, to me its simpler to configure a proxy pointed to tor (polipo).

Re: The Fit to Talk project. I've managed to fix Audacity. Windows had changed an internal setting to protect my privacy. This was in the April "downgrade". I'm getting desperate to dump it and switch to Ubuntu using the SSD I bought a month ago. I daren't take on any more projects though. I will try to add some audio files soon, and then you will be able to hear me using received English to talk to you.
Fit to Talk has been pretty quiet recently, and I may open it to a wider audience than Bitcoin Talk. I'm really keen to try to get some interaction between people living under oppressive regimes. I'm starting to think that includes England. Smiley

If you revive the Ubuntu thread, I can help you with that as well. What is holding you back? Are you set on Ubuntu or still considering alternatives?
4262  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should the UK return the Venezuelan gold? on: February 01, 2019, 01:02:33 AM
Well of course the simple answer is YES, but to whom should it be given. Opinion seems to think that it will be taken by Maduro if he gets it, and Juan Guaidó is an American puppet introduced to create a regime change to favour the US. If Guaidó gets it, then some people think it will disappear in the same way that the Libyan bank deposits vanished after the removal of Gaddafi.

I'll go out on a limb, and say that the gold should only be returned when a true democratically elected president is in power, and the money can be used to help rebuild the economy. It is an important asset for Venezuela, and it shouldn't be allowed to fall into the hands of the banking elite.

Funny you brought this here, because today came news about the Maduro regime hastily selling gold to the United Arab Emirates, and there are rumors gold was sent in "that Russian plane", possibly with their families.

That gold belongs to Venezuela. Soon the Maduro regime will end and logically those reserves should remain as such, in storage.

Exclusive: Venezuela plans to fly central bank gold reserves to UAE
‘Novaya Gazeta’ reports Russia helped sell Venezuelan gold. Russia’s Central Bank denies it.

That question should not be not be addressed to the UK (who is safekeeping part of our gold reserves by OUR request), but to Russia and the UAE who seem happy to launder it...

4264  Economy / Economics / Re: R u consider rich holding crypto during hyper inflation on: January 31, 2019, 05:15:57 PM
Eventually it evens out based on intuitive looking at the situation of things. The reason for that is because of the need to exchange your crypto into fiat if you really wants to buy anything with it as long as crypto is not accepted as a legal tender. When there is hyper inflation, the local currency gets weakened while the prices of goods in the local market increases to another level. Which then means as a crypto holder, you will have to exchange say your bitcoin at a higher rate but when you buy with it, you get the same goods you would have gotten prior to the inflation period.  The only advantage is that, while those who hold fiat see their wealth drop, crypto holders still maintain their purchasing power.

This is exactly what is going on here. Once the spiral starts, its too late. If someone bought and hold before it started, sure it could be considered "rich", but for people working and earning wages in that fiat, and spending most of it in daily necessities, there was little incentive to have savings in "unknown thing" before, and now there is too little money to buy "unknown thing" to be of any worth short of escaping the rapid devaluation momentarily (until you need to actually use it, in a span of days).

Think of it: the average Venezuelan (if employed) earns the equivalent 8 USD a month, its already insufficient for food alone, where is he/she going to take from to purchase bitcoin? But if this person doesn't do it, within a month (everyday faster) that would have the power purchase equivalent to 4 USD.

So you can't do it but you must do it...

Before: You didn't feel the need to do it, so you didn't.

Don't wait until its too late. And always diversify your investments if unsure...

it only applies when hyper inflation occurs, the assets we store in crypto form certainly do not change too bad only when the currency is paired with VEF, it is just the same as VEF got hyper inflation, so if they didn't want get that, it must be converted to USD or other

VEF was replaced with VES in September 2018. 1 VES = 100,000 VEF. Not even 6 months have passed and the 1 VES coins and 2 VES banknotes are getting rejected by people. The largest banknote is 500 VES which is currently about 20¢ in (USD). Debit card is a must have. Banks limit cash withdraws to 1000 VES (40¢) per day, and if you are unlucky, even less than that. It is rare to find an ATM with actual money in it, and its limited even more.
4265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: is it possible to store the blockchain in two different hard drives? on: January 31, 2019, 03:16:50 PM
is it possible to store the blockchain in two different hard drives that works simultaneousley?

Raid controllers or "software (fake) Raid" can achieve this, with a mode called JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks), it will look to the OS like a single drive.

I would recommend Linux, but it might be possible to do it in windows if the motherboard has such mode. Although Raid 0 works, that needs two drives of identical size (or one of them would have wasted space). Raid 0 increases the chance of data loss if a problem occur with the drives, but the blockchain can easily be recovered anyway and it happens to be faster.

In Linux, you could use LVM as mentioned above.
There are also specialized filesystems that support this as well without LVM: Btrfs, and ZFS to name a couple.

If your drives are so small that you need two to fit the entire blockchain, perhaps you should consider simply getting a larger one. A cheap ($18) 250g drive should fit the blockchain now, but give it some room for the future: you can get a 500g drive for $20...
4266  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I close the Fit to Talk project? on: January 31, 2019, 02:13:40 PM
I visited the site today, typos have been fixed completely.
Well done, Jet Cash.

By the way, I would like to know that whether Brave browser is better than Tor browser or not.
Better in some following criteria:
- Faster loading speed.
- More privacy.
- More secured.
Can you give me some recommendations with your experience with Brave browser, please.

This is offtopic so I'll be brief: Brave is Chromium based, while Tor is Firefox based.
Any browser can use Tor when configured correctly, but Tor browser bundles Tor and it comes per-configured for privacy as well.
Brave uses its own altcoin (BAT) which can be used to pay or be payed for viewing sites, it also has a referral program.
4267  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: January 31, 2019, 12:43:30 PM
Currently running November version of braiins on bootable SD
Can someone explain how to upgrade to January version
Can it be done via ssh? Or do I have to burn image to ssd card again?
Docs are confusing for us non programmers

Upgrade the package firmware after refreshing the packages. Using the web ui:

  • Update the repository information by clicking on Update lists button in the System > Software menu. In case the button is missing, the system has to be rebooted!
  • Once done, proceed to update the firmware package.

Or via ssh: opkg update && opkg install firmware

Yes, you are just going to upgrade a package called "firmware", that's it.
Use of the sd card is always optional. Can be used for temporary testing, or if your controller nand flash storage is damaged somehow.

I think it is best to reflash the SD card.

Be careful you don't end with cloned mac addresses.
4268  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Linux - error installing electrum 3.3.2 on: January 31, 2019, 12:26:15 PM
I have been happily using electrum in my linux mint OS for some time but it has failed to receive a payment and gets stuck on 'Synchronising'. I have tried to upgrade electrum to version 3.3.2, but I get the following error messages

I suggest you first upgrade your Python using a PPA:

If you’re using another version of Ubuntu (e.g. the latest LTS release), we recommend using the deadsnakes PPA to install Python 3.6:

$ sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:deadsnakes/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install python3.6

And then try running the binary again.

sudo pip install --upgrade pip

I get this:

/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip/_vendor/requests/__init__.py:83: RequestsDependencyWarning: Old version of cryptography ([1, 2, 3]) may cause slowdown.
  warnings.warn(warning, RequestsDependencyWarning)

Requirement already up-to-date: pip in /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages (18.1)

Note the references to python 2.7.

I don't know how to get past this.

sudo pip3  etc...

When you use pip, it is common in many Linux distros to have both the pip for python2 and the pip for python3. Depending on distro you might have separate binaries (ie. pip2 or pip3). With Ubuntu (also Mint) this appears to be /usr/bin/pip3

I am now in South America, and I see that the situation in Venisuele will not be stable for a long time, while it is the scene of a fight between the USA and Russia. poor people of Venesuela
Russia is already gone. They just sent a plane and that left. Rumors say they took gold from the central bank, and the families from the "leadership".

Bitcoin will only create a society that constanly invests into bitcoin mining and thats mad
Unlikely. A sane government would put an end to the subsidies, or at least lower them. Electricity won't be as cheap as it is today. Tho this probably wouldn't occur overnight, just like Argentina where they started a transition to move from subsided electricity to international prices in a 3 year period.

Venezuela would likely not go straight to international prices, but maybe half way there. Cheaper, but not free. Same as with gasoline, which is the only mad thing going on in this country. If you think a bitcoin mining society is bad, what do you make of a society with free gasoline? I'd rather have the former.

Oh and just for the record, there are some big miners here with solar power, they planned for the future as every miner should...
4271  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Future of Bitcoin on: January 31, 2019, 02:54:03 AM
Since I got more knowledge about Bitcoin and Crypto and all that Blockchain stuff I am thinking about it's future. I'm sure, that those crypto/Blockchain Coins will be part of the Future and that maybe they will replace Fiat. But at some points I'm thinking that the Coins which will lead the future won't be the Bitcoin. The Bitcoin is the native Coin, and the most important at the moment. But in some Points I don't see the Future in Bitcoin.

1. During the Hype the transactions costs where at 10$, who wants to pay 10$ if he want to buy a coffee in the coffee shop around the corner. Furthermore the confirmation of those transactions were very slow. It took too much time for daily usage. Sure, Lightning should solve the problem, and all ppl which are involved in it are saying what a nice technic and that it will be the Future. But the not technic customer has no idea how to use it.

2. In my opinion POW-Systems are also not sustainable for the future. In a world where sustainability and environmental friendliness gets more important, POW is a waste of energy. And, it's not even profitable anymore.

3. Decentralization, the best argument for Bitcoin is the decentralization. But it can also be used against the Bitcoin. Because it isn't as decentralized as it should. 5 Pools would have more than 51% of the total hash rate. It sounds not real, that they would do a 51% attack on BTC, but nobody says that it won't happen in the future.

All those are points against the Bitcoin, but I would like to know what you think about.

1. This is not going to happen anymore. There is segwit and Lightning network now, TX fees are at the lowest and will get even lower in v18.
2. You answered the solution yourself. BECAUSE its not profitable, the last remaining miners will be those using free renewable energy.
3. There is no need to use those pools, and unless one gets all 51%, it doesn't matter. Any attempts to do this gets more and more expensive.

There is no doubt that Bitcoin has adapted to the challenge, thanks to its community of developers, miners and node operators. It has resisted attacks, forks, and drama. 10 years and counting, no blockchain reversals or hacks, it has kept its promise unlike certain altcoins...

The infographics is hard to see, and space-consumed.

This is simple enough that it could be made with BBcode:

Great news for the Nigerian Wink
Maybe because they were able to fool the mass before by giving them a low compensation rate and as your people did not have an option, they were forced to accept the job even if the salary isn't that enough. Maybe the mass protest will help and will be effective since you have mentioned that your country's election is coming up in February.
This issue must be considered and must have the attention of the next candidates to solve. I do understand that Nigeria is one of the richest nations when it comes it economics but the people were fooled by the national administration. You people need to stand up and show them what you want and what you deserve!

And now all the "small jobs" that would have been paid under that amount disappear. Who could possible lose those ill paid jobs? Oh wait, those who need them the most, the poor of the poor. The higher the minimum wage is, the less "menial" jobs are (legally) available, and those people go back to the streets or go "informal"...

In short: Everytime you rise the minimum wage, you destroy jobs and throw more people to the streets.

I’ve used Newegg for years with both Bitcoin and PayPal with no issues, and the site is my go-to for purchasing products with Bitcoin even today. You can always buy gift cards for the website you’re trying to purchase a product off of from somewhere like the Digital Goods section of this forum as well.

Do you know if Newegg ships worldwide? Last i tried, some years ago, it was USA only... But if they changed that policy I'd like to know, especially if i can pay directly in bitcoins...

          Keypoints:
          • This is not a U.S. backed coup.
          • This is not about a political ideology.
          • The people want democracy.
          • Juan Guaidó did not just "declare" himself president.
          • Juan Guaidó is acting as Interim President.
          • Maduro is illegitimate (made his own parallel congress).
          • Monthly wage went from $350 a month to $7 a month.
          • Inflation in 2018 +1,700,000%.
          • Projected inflation in 2019 +10,000,000%.
          • 5,000,000 Venezuelans have fled.

The recovery codes that should be used with a 2FA application like Authy or Google don't really need to be printed, either- there's always the possibility that a printer connected to the internet has been compromised as well. I personally write down my 2FA recovery codes and keep them in a dark and dry place that I can somewhat easily access in case I lose a device. I haven't yet needed to use any of the codes, but always be ready for the worst.

Just remember to do another hand written copy and store it in a physically apart and secure place. You know, in case of disaster (same thing with the seed words/privkeys etc).

Convert my noisy S9 to a quiet space heater.
Having control over my hardware feel great.
No mentions about  asic boost  ON/OFF option  ?

This was already present since the october version:

[feature] bmminer now supports overt AsicBoost via version rolling, latest bitstream from Bitmain has been integrated and BIP310 support has been enabled. AsicBoost can be turned off in the interface.

          AsicBoost support

          • Braiins OS supports overt (version-rolling) AsicBoost in accordance with BIP310.

Trying to use AsicBoost on a pool that is not supporting it will result in an error message (the device will not start mining at all). Please note there is no automatic detection present at the moment, meaning AsicBoost can be only turned on/off manually.

          Antminer S9

AsicBoost is turned on by default. This setting can be changed in:

          • web interface Services > CGMiner menu
          • config file /etc/cgminer.conf by altering the multi-version value to 1 (disabled) or 4 (enabled)

          DragonMint T1

AsicBoost is turned on by default and can not be turned off. The device is incapable of mining efficiently without AsicBoost.

The DragonMint T1 always uses asicboost.

          =====

Say goodbye to backdoors, closed systems and “hidden features”. Braiins OS is completely open-source and transparent.
The code is available to anyone to understand, audit and verify. And of course, you are invited to build on top of it.

Yay!, lets get that "...much more!" part detailed:

          2019-01-24-0

          All mining hardware types
          • [feature] bOS now automatically detects availability of a new version. The web UI now contains an indicator of new release availability (+ single click to install)
          • [feature] firmware upgrade process is now more smooth when upgrading from bOS that is more than 2 releases old
          • [feature] miner status web page no longer needs access to port 4028 of the miner, everything is provided via web proxy on the miner
          • [feature] a new script discover.py scans the network range and provides information about bOS devices as well as factory firmware devices
          • [feature] fancontrol completely rewritten, all mining hardware now uses the same PID controller algorithm. The automated fan control can be overriden and fan speed can be set manually
          • [feature] it is now possible to run upgrade2bos.py with --dry-run parameter to create system backup and check if the firmware is likely succeed in transitioning to bOS
          • [feature] miner status page is now the default section after login
          • [feature] transition from factory firmware to bOS can now be supplied with a post-upgrade script that runs during the first boot of the machine running bOS for the first time. Official documentation provides more details.
          • [feature] macOS guide for factory firmware transition added
          • [feature] DHCP client now sends its system hostname to its DHCP server = there is a single source of truth with regards to the machine hostname

          Antminer S9
          • [feature] upgrade to bOS is now possible for S9's running older firmware that has 4 NAND partitions
          • [feature] a multiplier allows changing frequency of either per-chip calibration settings from the factory or of user configured per hash board base frequency. Web interace adjusted accordingly. The functionality is also available through the API.
          • [feature] it is now possible to restore the factory firmware without having a backup of the original firmware. The configuration is tailored from the running bOS and the restore2factory.py tool can be supplied with a factory firmware image downloaded from manufacturer's website.
          • [feature] firmware now supports the reset button used for rebooting the machine. If the push button is held down for more than 5 seconds the machine is also "factory" reset and all bOS settings are erased (Note, that it doesn't switch back to original factory firmware)
4279  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Confused about data usage of mining. on: January 29, 2019, 10:45:56 PM
I did a few searches googled.
Found a post or. 2 on how much data usage to expect through the internet connection.
          2mb and max 10 mb.
Then i get to the bitcoin sit and see. Minimum requirments 500Mb per day (15GB per month) download
And upload at 5GB per day (150GB per month)
           So what is it?
Such a small amount that you wont even notice or uploading so much data the your service provider shuts you down?
Im interested in seting up a pair of s9 units
And a computer all on solar and just leave them running .
Im off grid completely use a single phone hot spot as a data line to a tower with very few users.
Last month i downloaded 188 gigs data through the hotspot.
But not sure about building a dedicated system to run a pair of s9 units
If the data requirments cant be met for an independent system.
Im not really interested in plugging into a pool unless its a set of local people here near me.

Could any one answer whats really going to be needed to setup. A small farm or small local pool and how much data will be used?

          I measured this before, a single S9 consumes about 1~2KB/sec, thats 60KB~120KB in a minute, 3MB~7MB an hour, 86MB~172MB a day, 2.5GB~5GB a month per unit.

What you saw at the web site, might have been the requirements to run a node. You will not run a node, your pool operator is running one for you.
And you definitely don't want to run your own pool, everyone in your community should connect to a larger pool if you want to have any sort of regular income (you could all use ck's proxy if you wanted to look like a single miner, but data savings doing that are negligible). Soloing is out of the question, the chances of hitting a block are lower than the universe suddenly ending or close...

My accounts at the exchanges all need my phone for SMS verification to log in. So what if the phone was lost? Would I be locked out?

The phone that I use is a pre-paid one and I fill minutes with pre-paid cards. I have used the phone number for years but it is not on any special account.

What do you think? Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh

I have accounts in various exchanges and not a single one requires this. SMS is a poor man's 2fa, but it can be easily intercepted, so its nearly pointless to use it in my opinion. If you disable the sms verification, you don't have to worry about losing your phone line. I think the couple of exchanges that demand 2fa can fallback to sms, but instead you could use 2fa in a pc. I think Authy runs in a chromium browser iirc, and it backups too (unlike google's) so you can easily move from phone to phone (or tablet/PCs).
