4281  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [Antminer S9] Miner stops hashing - all stats freeze except LSTime on: January 29, 2019, 04:22:31 PM
Also, as AB is something that needs to be coded at both the miner and the pool side, could it be pool related? I moved one to a different pool after it kept happening and its been stable for days now.

And perhaps the pool's AB implementation varies as well? Maybe one likes BraiinsOS's (cgminer's?) more than Bitmain's (bmminer's), and with another pool is just the opposite?
4282  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you use blue light glasses?? on: January 29, 2019, 04:14:34 PM
I think they are actually red-light apps. The red drowns out the blue-light.

Think of how military uses red lights outside  at night to be not detected.

Anybody else have some info on this?

No, that's infrared, same thing security cameras use, you see the light in the monitor but not with your eyes.

The military does use true red lamps for lightning in some (emergency) situations, but that is meant to make it quick for the eye to adjust to total darkness. If you go from white light suddenly to dark, you see nothing for a minute or so, but if you instead of bright go from reddish dim light to dark, you get to see things faster.

Imagine you are under attack at night and your facility suddenly loses power, then you'll be a minute in blindness, enough for a tactical team to pwn you... And that is also the idea behind flash grenades (usually also accompanied by a deafening bang sound that leaves your ears ringing and hearing nothing for a minute or so as well).
4283  Other / Off-topic / Re: Piracy can affect the pricing power. it injects "shadow" competition on: January 29, 2019, 02:57:46 PM
I have read that argument before, so called "piracy" (its actually "copyright infringement") can become "free" marketing.

The word "piracy" doesn't exist in legal parlance, except for the old fashioned maritime variation... In poor countries where this is rampant, the companies wouldn't have been able to collect a ¢ in the first place.

If the show happens to have associated merchandise (ie. figurines, computer games, etc) it will indirectly benefit those sales too.

Copyright law was meant to protect an author work for a LIMITED time, originally 14 years + a SINGLE 14 year extension in the United States. Then it would go into the public domain. THAT was the intention, "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts" not to impair it. Unfortunately, like modern fractional reserve banking, powerful lobbies tweaked the law to the point it became the opposite of its intended application.

You see, before the United States of America was founded, the English printing guilds were not happy of the rampant "unauthorized" reprinting of their works going on in the colonies. Now you can immediately understand the intentions of the founding fathers... Also back then, a writer sold the work once, and only once to the printer, never again seeing a dime or owning any rights of it.

The "copyright" law was intended to correct both issues, to provide due payment to the author, AND to provide the people free unlimited access to it once the period ended. It was a right TO copy, not against copy. To put an end to the English guilds eternal ownership of written works.

Disclaimer: I do not condone the use of the word piracy, nor of copyright infringement. For software, I consider myself a free open source software advocate. In poor countries, 90% of the people use unauthorized copies of Microsoft (and others) products, i'd rather see them switch to Linux instead. (Good luck telling a Venezuelan earning 8$ a month to purchase a 120$ windows license, let alone Office or other products)...

Cuba is the funniest, because there is (was?) even an American law that forbids American companies to collect money from their products (in blacklisted countries) I think this was relaxed during Obama's administration, which allowed Netflix to operate there. Yet in there all you see is windows, yes, Microsoft Windows in the State owned computers. But wait there is more! They have a state TV that shows American movies and shows 24/7... Often Spanish subtitled downloaded from.. You guessed right.

So in addition to competition, does it promote... culture? Foreign (freedom/"capitalist") values? You might not know this, but something similar on a smaller scale DOES occur in North Korea. There is a lot of south korean content (ie. dramas) smuggled in via Russia...

Copyright is a State protection, it is a form of legalized monopoly. That in itself is very harmful from a classic liberal point of view, now imagine extending this monopoly eternally, Hey! that's just what the printer guilds had before!...

Second disclaimer: Despite the tremendous social pressure, I have yet to see a single episode or read a single book from "Games of Thrones".
4284  Other / Off-topic / Re: Do you use blue light glasses?? on: January 29, 2019, 02:17:54 PM
I exercise my eye muscles by holding my hands in front of my face with the fingers slightly apart. I then move them rapidly through a range of about 6 inches whilst looking at a light source.

Is that better than moving your head to see things around you from time to time? Tho in a work cubicle that might be a nice trick...

I wouldn't use a "blue light" filtering lens as that would probably affect the color gamut of things...

4286  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Telegram groups for Bitcoin on: January 29, 2019, 01:51:16 PM
There are some telegram groups which is filled by scammers they will do scam in the name of conversion or exchange so avoid of this types of scams

And phishers pretending to be official support from big main channels (ie. Binance, Bitmain). They are lurking waiting for people in trouble and then PM them trying to "Help" when you post a genuine issue in the main channel. Its usually safe to simply ignore all PMs, like on IRC, discuss your troubles in the public channel, and never give away logins/passwords.
4287  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2.5nm transistors produced: Thoughts on them & miners? on: January 29, 2019, 02:30:50 AM
Actually both E11+ from Ebang and T3 from Innosilicon at 10nm both outperform the Bitmain S15 in efficiency, 48W/TH and 45W/TH.  Bitmain is around 50-58W/TH I believe?
And reading some reviews it is a very unstable and unreliable machine.
So far only Bitmain and GMO have attempted 7nm tech. GMO was a total failure, as efficiency was close to 16nm. Only Bitmain came close but with a very unreliable chip.
For now I'm still running my S9's.  It's not worth the investment risk yet to upgrade with what is available in the market.
Hopefully they will improve but in these market conditions I seriously doubt it.

And at 16nm the MicroBT M10 is far more efficient than the S9 also at 16nm, so what gives? This was the same guy that used to work with Bitmain so why such difference? If MicroBT can switch to a smaller node, it should take over the lead in my opinion. Unless Braiins OS can break thru the efficiency of the S15 as well as it did to the S9...

Also if the 7nm asic Bitmain uses is unreliable, what is being used in the S15 that some people here have bought and are using at this very moment?

4289  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: [Antminer S9] Miner stops hashing - all stats freeze except LSTime on: January 29, 2019, 02:15:44 AM
So I see that this bug is exclusively with bitmain's LPM and enhanced LPM firmwares. I wonder why this happens and if they are aware / plan to fix it.

Some miners always seem to freeze at the same time, sometimes as low as 10-15 minutes after booting. The only solution for these seems to be to downgrade to non-LPM firmware (or an alternative firmware)...

And turning off LPM and enhanced LPM modes doesn't work?
4290  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: January 29, 2019, 12:40:51 AM
I updated another S9 but both are network conflic with each other. DHCP give me IP address of 192.168.1.100 for both miner. I tried static IP, both got different IP but somehow conflic again... Both work in stand alone but not at same time. Not my first miner, I did on several Antminer since 2014. So WTF ?? What do I forgot ? I changed IPv4 address and mask  but leaved IPv6 blank.

Maybe you cloned the mac address? Try to see it in Interfaces using the web ui or via ssh using the ifconfig | grep HWaddr command on both miners.

In other news, this message from the Braiins OS Telegram channel might be of interest to all:

S15's will be added to the longterm list. Let's roll the January update out first.

We are basically rewriting the mining software from scratch as through out the years it contains so much crappy/disfunctional and/or duplicate code that is very hard to maintain support for all the devices at a time, stay tuned ;-)

When he (16vV8...) was live, his large hash rate dropped my block % significantly (as with everyone else's block %), which makes sense. When I looked 5 minutes before the block was found and right after the block was found the difference there was about a 33% drop. I've been focusing a lot more attention to Kanopool for almost 1 month, but I just can't wrap my head around this issue - hopefully Kano can chime in sometime and give some clarification to me.

This was a bad luck block, and I guess chances are now higher for a good luck block to come, but nothing is certain. Only in the long run its going to average back to 100%, 1 month isn't enough, you need to see +1 year...

And now the pool is back to 50ish PH/s.

I am an amateur in photography. I own a Canon 600D 18-55mm. How do I take photos having a blurry background which are quite famous?

The "Bokeh" effect is easy to obtain from a distance, just zoom in to your subject and you'll notice it. You want to reduce your "depth of field", so you want to manually use a lower f stop (large aperture) also known as shallow focus. The Canon should have an aperture mode setting or use the full manual mode.

The pool seems to have gone to a solid 270ish PHs for the last day or two. Blocks should be coming soon...
4294  Other / Off-topic / Re: Dumping Windows, and installing Ubuntu. on: January 28, 2019, 12:57:47 AM
  • Linux Lite
  • Puppy Linux, Xenial

Cool

Not a very friendly derivative and you have to use the fido with this because puppy use the default root. I find it interesting that it works good to old computers.
The new ubuntu has games by the way but its also crunch a lot of resources.

Linux Lite is just Lubuntu with a bunch of extra programs installed though...

Puppy is a bit complex to install and maintain, but not hard when using it from a live iso, as it was originally intended.

You can use most distros in old computers, as long as you carefully choose what to install instead of the choices made for you. For example in Debian derivatives use the Expert Install option, and don't let it install the bloated gnome desktop. Install something light like Jwm and a light browser like Netsurf and you are done.

I agree with Ubuntu (and derivatives) being a good choice for newbies. Ubuntu-mate is my favorite in that regard.

Or you could pick any of the light distros intended for old computers.
4295  Other / Off-topic / Re: Which is your favourite personal signature of bitcointalk? on: January 28, 2019, 12:26:33 AM
who know the create signature codes ? how to create it to myself

They are the same codes you use to compose a reply: https://www.bbcode.org/

You could just start to reply in a thread, and in there type anything you want and hit preview, while never actually posting the message. Once you are satisfied, copy that code into your profile signature area.

Yeah, just a blank line. This forum is sooo overloaded with signature ads, sometimes they can be very distracting. At first I even thought that I forgot to enable ad-blocking extension in Chrome. Now when I see a blank signature it's like a breath of fresh air. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer clean design without tons of banners with "BEST CRYPTO CASINO EVER" or "GET FREE BITCOINS NOW!!11" titles thrown at your face.

Have you seen your Profile Preferences?? You can disable signatures and avatars:

4296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BITCOIN: This Bubble is Different on: January 27, 2019, 10:42:14 PM
Me thinks these miners will end up in some place maybe venezuela, where people can steal electricity.

It's going to be quite difficult to get mining hardware into Venezuela, as the Venezuelan government has banned the imports of cryptocurrency mining equipment[1][2]. Probably the only way for Venezuelan to mine is to use their personal hardware(which is definitely not profitable when talking about mining BTC). Venezuelans are going to be farming RuneScape gold for a while.

[1] https://www.ccn.com/venezuela-bans-imports-of-cryptocurrency-mining-equipment-report/
[2] https://blockexplorer.com/news/venezuela-bans-crypto-mining-rigs-from-entering-the-country/

And yet lots of asic miners made it, apparently even Pangolin has successfully sent them via DHL. Its actually not banned, but you are supposed to get a "mining/import permit". There is also people smuggling them, at least last year when things were bad with customs.

A $150 S9 in Venezuela ends being sold in the local market for about $500. Quite the irony...

If you steal electricity for mining, you will probably go to prison and all your equipment seized. Electricity here is cheap enough so there is no need to do that, and its very stupid to do it... Just rent an industrial type warehouse and use the capacity installed. There are LOTS of empty warehouses due to the broken economy...

There are people farming Runescape and other games, others doing various internet jobs, of course. Anything paid in foreign/crypto currency, can bring food to your table.

Now you have to understand the authorities are corrupt, if you "look" rich, they will want to extort money from you, regardless. But if you have acquaintances in the right positions, things can magically enter. Sometimes its simply luck, either good or bad.

To install a big farm you'll probably want to obtain a permit and meet with the gov officials first, just to reduce the chance of wrong doings from the authorities. There is an institution that "regulates" crypto activities, but of course this is a Maduro government institution, things might change completely if Maduro falls, as he might due to the recent development...
4297  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 Network Usage on: January 27, 2019, 09:48:15 PM
Last time i checked, an S9 uses like 1~2KB/sec, thats 0.8~1.6 mbps, not 100mpbs... There is something seriously wrong, its probably compromised. Miners (ppl) have the bad having of not setting a proper root password. Perhaps someone seized it and is performing attacks or spamming from it...

It needs to be isolated, perhaps perform a firmware reset, set a proper root (using ssh) password and try again.
You need to set TWO different passwords, the one in the web ui is NOT the same as the one in ssh. SET BOTH.
4298  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: When did Electrum Wallet Originated? on: January 27, 2019, 02:30:31 PM
(Bitcoin Cli, now Bitcoin Core)

CLI stands for command-line interface and "bitcoin CLI" was not the name of it, it was called bitcoin-qt then changed to bitcoin-core.

Quote
Not sure but, Electrum's security today isn't really that reliable since it requires a third-party host/node.
Electrum's reliance on third party servers has not changed, it still relies on them nearly the same as it has always relied on them. it is a SPV node after all and you can't expect the same level of security as the full nodes offer.

I wasn't here in 2010, but reading some Satoshi posts I'm under the impression that he/she/they did in fact used wxwidgets... I'm glad it was switched to QT! (And most altcoins copied that wallet)...
4299  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: is notifying users about new versions within the wallet a good idea? on: January 27, 2019, 02:16:30 PM
I have always wondered why wallets aren't doing this already, specially with vulnerabilities that are found in all of them from time to time which would require immediate updates in some rare cases.
recently Electrum added this [optional] feature in its latest release [1][2], that made me want to start a discussion about pros and cons of doing something like this.

[1] https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/commit/34c99c3b366ade7adaa919bf1f75d39fe9fcf250
[2] https://github.com/spesmilo/electrum/commit/0bfda7c8c74757d261bbc7e24eee44fa09965e85

If this is implemented PLEASE add an option to disable it. This is only needed with insecure OSes that can't keep its programs updated.., its more nags to get out of the way, part of the bad habit certain OS users get into (so many nag windows they want out of the way without reading).

The same thing applies to everything, from browsers to anything installed, now imagine everytime you open a program you get that nag.. Eww, and yes, i know some people in certain OS are already so much used to it, that they quickly close without reading, else they wouldn't be able to do any job done...

Your antivirus definitions are out of date, Wallet version x.y.z is out, Your Officesuit subscription expired, yadda, yadda, yadda...
4300  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to be A Good Miner on: January 27, 2019, 01:27:32 PM
You are always better off just buying the coins instead of purchasing mining hardware.

this is wrong, how is it more profitable to have bought bitcoin for 10k instead of buying a few miners ?  also the price can go in side-ways market for ages, mining generate constant coins, hodling generate constant blood pressure.

this pretty much depends on many factors, different for everyone, but the exact statement of yours is very wrong to say the least.

Why not diversify? Half on bitcoin, half on miners? Miners do need to be replaced, either by failure or obsolescence. Of course it makes no sense if your electricity is expensive that you end wasting more than earning.

Placing all your eggs in a single basket might sound attractive but the risk increases...
