4341  Other / Meta / Re: Application to be a Merit source for Bangladesh Thread on: August 09, 2021, 04:45:36 PM
I'm wondering how many active members there are on the Bangladesh local board.  Anyone have any idea or at least a rough estimate?  If there aren't that many, then the board wouldn't need its own merit source.  But if there are, then it's clear that there aren't enough merits being spread around.  Those numbers are abysmal, but that's assuming that the section has a lot of active members and they're making good posts.
According to https://ninjastic.space, 21 member were active in the last month (from July 9th till August 9th) and they wrote ~60 posts combined which is not a lot.

Bangladesh topic used to be quite active, but sometimes at the beginning of this year their numbers started going down. First time I included in my brief monthly overview of the local boards activity they had ~240 posts written, and for the last few months their average number is around ~50. It's a steep decline and not a good thing if they wanna get their own merit source or local board.

AFAIK, no other thread has got its dedicated Merit source (I may be wrong though) so far. So, I doubt whether my Merit Application will ever be accepted. A Local Board request for Bangladesh is pending for 3+ years.
Nigerian local thread does have merit source (CryptopreneurBrainboss) but he didn't become one by applying to be their merit source, but for Altcoin and Beginners and Help boards. I think your chances would be much better if you were more active on the forum, both in Bangladesh thread and in English part of the forum. I mean, in the last few years you wrote less than 100 posts, so no wonder that theymos is hesitant to give you a merit source status.

4342  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Merit Dashboard on: August 09, 2021, 03:41:09 PM
it is just me, or in the Received Merits Subsection II graph, I can only see the merits in Meta, even if I select other boards?
It's not just you, I just checked it out and exactly the same thing happens to me, no matter the browser so I guess its just some glitch.
4343  Economy / Services / Re: [W] twitter services and accounts on: August 09, 2021, 09:47:29 AM
Why, you are going to buy twitter account instead of creating your own?
He probably needs account for some service, and a few years old account looks more a little bit more legit than a rand new one. But yeah, it is imho waste of money but to each his own.

Also, operating multi account is against the twitter's policy. Correct me, if I am wrong.
Not really, Twitter doesn't really care about one user having several accounts. As a matter of fact, you can have up to 10 accounts registered on the same phone number

Note: You can have the same phone number associated with up to 10 Twitter accounts.
4344  Economy / Reputation / Re: Several Accounts Misspelling Manchester City Footballer "Kelvin De Bruyne" on: August 08, 2021, 04:02:31 PM
We do not have anything conclusive to link these accounts but what is for sure is that no football fan using this forum or any other would misspell iconic players names such as Ronaldo (Portuguese Cristiano or Brazilian el Fenomeno), Maradona, Pele, Cantona, Zidane, Beckham, Henry, Zola, Lampard, Gerrard, Van Basten, Maldini and others including Kevin De Bruyne and blame it on autocorrect or copy and paste. Those are probably seen by the majority as lame excuses trying to get themselves out of a situation they find themselves in.
It's not so uncommon for some names to be misspelt. Good example of that is Laszlo Hanyecz, which many here write as "Lazlo". @jamyr even started the thread about it, asking people to stop writing name of that iconic person from bitcoin history wrong.

If I were to reply to a post where the name of a player was misspelt I would make sure it was correct when I replied and I am sure others would just as can be seen by many subsequent posts where Kevin was mentioned as Kelvin. Since when do members need to copy and paste a reply? The rest of us usually click on the 'Quote' button and type and why would I then need to type the misspelt name myself?
.
There are examples when someone writes "Lazlo" and the other person replying to that post makes the same mistake even though he probably knows that the correct name is "Laszlo". So I guess it all depends on the person.

Your case would be stronger if for example they regularly exchange merit among themselves, which from what I could see is not the case here. Forum does have very capable investigators so if there is something to be found here they probably will, and if it turns out that you were right and that one person is behind all those accounts, he did helluva job.

4345  Economy / Reputation / Re: Several Accounts Misspelling Manchester City Footballer "Kelvin De Bruyne" on: August 08, 2021, 07:15:10 AM

The following members have mentioned him as "Kelvin" instead of "Kevin". These accounts are making the same error that football fans should not be making:

There is actually one more account that did the same thing.

If he decides to go to Manchester City he will have to compete with Sterling, Mahrez, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Silva, Rodri, Zinchenko and Gundogan for a midfield position.
Zinchenko is a left full-back, Fernandinho plays at the backline he was converted from DM to CB last season where he performed so well, Sterling, Mahrez and Silva are wingers and Grealish would have no business on the wing, Rodri is no better than Grealish so this leaves the midfield wide open for Grealish, Kelvin and Gundogan to operate so I don't see any challenge for Grealish if the deal went through.

Just briefly looking at their posting style, few observations:

-gabbie2010  tends to write very long sentences, rarely using full stop, not leaving spacing.
-when quoting, CryptocurencyKingm Mistafreeze and BlackVireuse are not making any spacing before they wrote an answer (I am doing the same thing for example)
-Harkorede is using punctuation marks and does make spacing when quoting
-another thing that connects all these accounts is that users are Nigerians, based on some of their posts, or being active in Nigerian local thread.

Another interesting thing is that @Harkorede is misspelling the name of another famous person, Kevin Durant, on several ocassions.

Great call! But it wasn't never an easy one!

Finally the Bucks are heading for the eastern finals, but you've gotta give Kelvin Durant some huge credit, man's a freaking legend. He literally had too much to do, and the last air ball from the Nets could easily be attributed to fatigue, just as one of the commentators said.

Dunno, all this is still kinda flimsy to connect these accounts and it would be good to get more evidence before jumping to conclusion, like connection via adresses or use of the same social media accounts.

On May 22, 2010, a Bitcoin developer named Laszlo Hanyecz bought what may have been the most expensive meal in human history when he paid someone 10,000 Bitcoins to pick up and deliver him two pizzas from Papa John’s.

Given that one Bitcoin is now worth more than $30,000, those pizzas cost, in retrospect, somewhere north of $300 million.

Nowadays, of course, no one would think of shelling out Bitcoin for something as mundane as a pizza without thinking first about how much money they might be giving up in the future.

In the years since Hanyecz’s splurge, Bitcoin has gone from being an interesting experiment in decentralized finance to being the best-performing asset of the decade, rising more than 10,000,000% since 2010 and jumping 220% last year alone.

There’s a Bitcoin ticker on every finance website.

Legendary investors like Paul Tudor-Jones, Stanley Druckenmiller, and Bill Miller speak approvingly of its prospects, and companies like Square and MicroStrategy have invested their corporate cash into Bitcoin....

Regarding the acceptance of participant who have received negative tag for various reason, then I think the manager can decide whether to accept or decline to join the campaign.
It's true that each manager can decide whether to accept someone in his campaign, but accepting those that previously cheated in exactly the same thing doesn't make much sense to me and is imho a bad call and a bad bounty management, at least in this case. If he clicked on their trust feedback, he would see that they are enrolling mutlitple accounts in his campaign too and shouldn't even be accept them in the first place.

Beside not being fair to other signature campaign participants, he is not doing any favors to his client either as I don't think its in the Xircus best interest being promoted by a bunch of red tagged cheaters.

4348  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What motivates you to start investing in cryptocurrency? on: August 06, 2021, 03:51:27 PM
It's really easy to say "if I invest in 201x I could be a billionaire now" if you only look at the price multiplier. But in fact, you likely could've just panic sold when bitcoin dropped from $600 to $200. And especially if you're a beginner with investing at that time, it definitely might have been the case. Heck, even I could've probably panic sold.
+1

I am not a fan of all "what if" thing when it comes to buying BTC as it doesn't make any sense at all and if anything it's counterproductive. In reality, 99% of those that are saying that would invest in BTC when price was in a two digit range of they only knew about it. Same thing goes now, people keep saying "I wish BTC drops to 1k so I can stock up " while majority would be scared shitlless and would think of selling what they have rather than buying more.

To answer OP, I started back in the late 2013 by spending few hundreds of dollars on various shitcoins, naively thinking that its too late to buy BTC. Boy was I wrong Cheesy. Eventually I realized that in the long run BTC outperforms any other crypto so I focused on DCA and HODL combo that works pretty good.
4349  Other / Meta / Re: Very brief overview of Merit Source sMerit Increase impact (first few days) on: August 06, 2021, 11:10:13 AM
What I also learned is approximately when I was made a merit source (I couldn't remember the month before looking at those graphs), which was Oct/Nov 2019.  Previously I thought it was in September that Theymos had tapped a bunch of new sources.  Anyway, it's great to see the circulating merits increase so much for the past month.  I certainly did my best to use up my allotment, though I fell short.
If you wanna take a look into very  detailed overview of your merit activity, you might wanna check this Merit Dashboard tab. You can find there bunch of interesting stuff like merit shared per months, where you shared that merit, to which ranks etc.

Now I'm wondering why merit circulation had declined from Jan. 2020 in the first place.  It could be that some merit sources have become inactive, I guess, but that's probably not a full explanation.  Any ideas?
Imho, its the combination of several big merit sources going AWOL and decreased forum activity. There was a topic that tracked bigger merit sources that were inactive for longer period of time, and when you add the ones with smaller allocation, no wonder that eventually merit shared hit the rock bottom in June. Luckily, theymos finally reacted so all good, at least for now.
4350  Other / Meta / Re: Very brief overview of Merit Source sMerit Increase impact (first few days) on: August 06, 2021, 10:36:35 AM
I'm really hoping the merit distribution went up overall this past month.
While waiting for a more detailed overview by DdmrDdmr, one thing is obvious; merit shared during July went up by almost 100% (from 13289 to 26411) when compared with June, and is the best result since January 2020 and one of the best  since introduction of merit.

And Xiaomi isn't some random bootleg tech company, they actually create great products(privacy concerns aside).
Yep, Xiaomi became what Samsung was 10-15 years ago. I own several of their products and when looking for something that offers good value for money, you can always count on Xiaomi no matter what you are buying; whether its mobile phone, laptop, TV, vacuum cleaner or something else.

Xiaomi fights hard to get as big as possible share of the market (they did surpass Apple!).
It is just a matter of time before they surpass Samsung too worldwide, as  they already managed to do that here in Europe during Q2 2021.

Anyway, definitely positive news and expecting the same from Xiaomi in other countries as well.

Yes your right in this thread Newbies -Read before posting there are many tutorial about the Forum guidelines but it is generalize and not including Avoid plagiarism , how to Quote and and how to use BBcodes.
Thing is, that pinned topic is perfectly enough for start, and if  every newbie bothered to check it properly, they would avoid so many mistakes they do, most common one being plagiarism (which is included as a part of Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ. Topics like yours have been made many times before here on this section and disappeared after couple of days so that's why I said it is redundant in my eyes, as same thing will happen to yours, while there is perfectly good starting point there in the pinned message.

Looking at your post history, I would advise you to focus more on learning about crypto and forum in general before making guides on those topics. More often than not, asking a good question worth more than just another newbie guide.

Why would you not accept Bitcoin if you make a new business? It would be with your best interests right?
And where exactly he wrote that he wouldn't accept bitcoin if he started his business? How you even came to that conclusion?

You might wanna read the first post of this topic and @Imran232 again and you will realize that your question doesn't make sense.
4355  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Guide] for Newbies to Learn faster about This forum on: August 06, 2021, 07:00:35 AM
As I see within this month there are many newbies/newcomers to our forum asking for help so I decided to make this thread so they don't have to look for a long time in other board, So I collected some links here to facilitate their study in the forum.
Thing about topics like this is that they will drop to 2nd/3d page in a few days, meaning newbies will have hard time finding it, as same thing happened to many other similar threads here in Beginners & Help section, making your topic kinda redundant. After all, there is already Newbies - Read before posting which is pinned at the top of B&H, meaning it's easily visible for anyone.

4356  Other / Meta / Re: How to be on the first page or top of the list on Announcements (Altcoins) board on: August 05, 2021, 06:40:54 AM
I second this warning (although I confess I didn't know that people were offering organized bitcointalk thread bumping services; I thought it was always just random members looking to make a few bucks).
It's very well organized, and the one that has monopoly here on bitcointalk is Vitor Services. Per my guesstimate they are responsible for at least 80%+ of all thread bumping that is going on. I've been playing whack-a-mole game with them for quite some time (not so much lately) and it seems to me that they have unlimited amount of old newbie accounts made years ago, that they activate once the ones they are using get banned/tagged.

One would think that kind of "marketing technique" would die after bumping changes, but they are still alive and kicking as in the last ~year and a half we identified more than 120 ANN threads that are using bumping services while real number is probably much higher. That reminds me, I have to update the list as I found several more threads where thread bumping is going on as we speak.

You can probably tell pretty quickly whether a conversation is "organic" or not simply by looking at the ranks, registration dates, post histories, and even usernames of the members having said conversation.  The idiots who do crap like that don't tend to be stealthy, and they're easy to spot by mods, older forum members, or anyone else who's frequented the ANN section for a while.
Yep, it's pretty much obvious to everyone that those conversations are not organic at all. They usually use newbie accounts, write one liners, or ask some stupid question and then they wait OP to answer.  Rinse and repeat. I suspect that there is one high-end group doing the same but in a way less conspicuous way and using higher rank accounts, so it's much harder to connect all the dots.

But there is some poetic justice in all of this, those that are trying to scam investors are getting scammed by those "marketing agencies", selling them something that doesn't work.

I don't think that's the best way to encourage a newbie
Thanks anyway
mk4 actually gave you a good advice which you took as offense, and here is another one: don't copy/paste/paraphrase something without proper reference to appear more knowledgeable and get couple of merits. Plagiarism=ban on bitcointalk.

How to Buy Bitcoin

You can buy bitcoin through exchanges and stockbrokers, or from other owners. Regardless of where you get it, consider the risks of investing in digital assets.

Buying bitcoin and other cryptocurrency in 4 steps

Decide where to buy bitcoin. Cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase and a few traditional brokers like Robinhood can get you started investing in bitcoin.

Think about how to store your cryptocurrency. Are you going to keep your bitcoin in a hot wallet or a cold wallet?

Make your purchase. Figure out how much you want to invest in bitcoin.

Manage your investment. Determine your long-term plan for this asset.
4358  Other / Meta / Re: Viable Projects? on: August 04, 2021, 03:50:46 PM
Wasn't like that 4 years ago. The ANN threads are full of crap and paid promotions regardless of the rules.
I haven't been around 4 years ago, but I can only imagine being much worse than now, because before changes the way threads were sorted this paid bumper technique actually worked, while now it's completely useless. So if anything, it can only be easier for legit projects with genuine interest to stand out. The fact that altcoins are mostly promoted on other social media platforms like Twitter is another story...

By the way, have you considered running signature campaign?

4359  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why buy bitcoins and not altcoins? on: August 04, 2021, 01:44:56 PM
Second reason: someone has $100-500 capital, if they want to buy Bitcoin, not now, in 2010 it might be suitable, for that Altcoin is one of the solutions expecting miracles, for example: BTT, Doge at that time.
Led by this common misconception, first time I entered crypto world I bought altcoins instead of bitcoin. So, back in the late 2013 I decided to spend several hundreds of $ on crypto, and since I couldn't afford one whole BTC and thinking it's way too expensive, I bought bunch of shitcoins which of course proved to be a major mistake.

Point is, no matter how much money you have, if you are newbie, you should 100% of the time stick to BTC as all you have to do is hodl and nothing else, while in order to profit from alts you really have to know some stuff, and even then you have to have shit load of luck not to not end up with having less than you would of you just bought BTC.

@OP Wanna sleep better, be more relaxed and still outperform alts in the long run? Get BTC, as simple as that.
4360  Other / Meta / Re: NFT Topic? on: August 04, 2021, 09:30:05 AM
Everything related to cryptos other than bitcoin should be posted in the altcoin discussion board because NFT is also a shit like other previous hyped one, if you dont want your thread to be buried then better post in altcoin service discussion which is free of spam.
Vast majority of NFT related projects are indeed crap and money grabs, that are only using NFT part as a gimmick to attract naive and greedy investors, but I think that NFTs are here to stay, and we are going to see some more serious applications in the years to come. One of the industries that can really profit from it is gaming and while up until now we mostly have some crappy browser based games, soon enough we are gonna get fully fledged AAA games with NFT implemented as an important part of the game and not just a catchphrase to lure investors. Beside that, there are some other ways in which NFTs could be useful, @nullius made couple of posts about that.

With that being said, I think that its way too early for a separate NFT child board. It's far better to see how those things develop here on bitcointalk and if there is enough interest, before making another child board.
