4361  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Blockchain friendly countries? on: January 19, 2019, 06:07:40 PM
I don't think there are any countries "unfriendly" towards blockchain. If anything, some have issues with the coins or tokens from ICOs etc, but blockchain itself is pretty much a non issue. A block chain is more or less a write only, immutable database, self protected on each new entry. There are infinite applications where such a system could prove useful, something you want data to never be tampered with, such as votes or people's IDs.

Only a corrupt society that "needs" to be able to alter registries after the fact, would object this technology. It does bring transparency and it should in fact be pursued.
4362  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: January 19, 2019, 05:58:21 PM
"...Almost nothing in SpaceX is original..."

"Rapid Unintentional Disassembly" is a tradition (baptism of fire?) of all agencies and companies that have embarked in this business known as "rocket science". NASA and the Soviets had a long series of catastrophic failures, and even the meticulous europeans once uploaded the wrong software to a rocket that was perfectly fine (Arianne 4 parameters into Arianne 5, IIRC); and everyone learns from those mistakes. Even Von Braun with the Nazis had a lot of failures with the V2, there was this hilarious comment of a general about its usefulness as a short range artillery weapon (when failing and blowing spectacularly at/near the launch site.

But then, after so many failures they did it:

With a historic landing, SpaceX launches new age of spaceflight

And this is their merit, one of many, and I expect them to keep delivering and return us to an age were we can dream again.

It is nice that brilliant people planned and hoped to realize this within NASA or other State agencies, but what is the value if it remains buried behind eternal bureaucracy and budget cuts? Yes, Orion could have performed this decades ago, but they didn't do it. In fact there is a lot of trouble just to send anything "nuclear", even a small passive generator for deep space missions, let alone using directly the energy from controlled nuclear blasts.

At least these people are opening a path, and i hope they can make it sustainable. I'm sure if an idea doesn't seem feasible, they will change it to one that could. From my fuzzy memory i think Elon was once asked about the ferry loop idea, IIRC he said something along the lines of: "that is not ruled out". I might be mistaken, but if it makes more sense from their point of view, they will reach to it one way or another, just like you see them using concepts and ideas others proposed decades ago.
4363  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ATMs should target developing and third world countries on: January 19, 2019, 04:21:20 PM
Lot's of Bitcoin ATMs keep popping in the developed countries such as US, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong etc. But I have been thinking why don't the owner's target countries without much economic stability? Like Venezuela (btw they just got their first Bitcoin ATM). That would increase the adoption. Something like backpropagation. What do you think?

Unfortunately in Venezuela it would probably infringe the draconian foreign currency exchange control. Even if you obeyed the government "official" exchange rate, you would immediately go bankrupt. Example: The current official rate is 1000 VES for 1 USD, street price is 2500 VES for 1 USD. Very few people can get the official price (and its actually a lie, inside that system most people end paying closer to the street price anyway).

Also, even if you managed to trade at the street/localbitcoins exchange rate, the time you take to collect the fiat from the ATM and exchange it back for bitcoin (or anything else) it would be worth half or less (even if you emptied the box daily).

There have been banknote shortages in the past, and its probable that will repeat again, as those in power keep feeding inflation because they think they can command the market by force. And you'd also need an insanely large amount of bank notes for a few satoshis.

Perhaps you have not noticed but they are selling higher than buying at localbitcoins, that should give you a hint of the time it takes to complete the loop:

And if that occurs to an online exchange, just imagine having to physically keep and maintain the ATM, which would need to remain in private property and under surveillance. Venezuela is a country where regular Bank ATMs are vandalized if left unprotected (there are banks that keep them inside). I'm sure you will find a similar criminality problem in most poor countries, where this is ironically most needed...
4364  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Lots of doubt on on: January 19, 2019, 01:21:35 PM
Panic is certainly experienced by everyone who invests in bitcoin when prices always go down and there is no sign of the price increase, there are those who are able to be patient and some are afraid of bigger losses and eventually sell in a loss. I think in a bitcoin price situation that is currently down and unstable, the best step is to keep holding and patiently waiting, we will never know for sure when there will be a price increase, but at least we can be sure that price increases will occur, only a time problem that will determine when that happens.

But this is not exclusive to bitcoin, it is a (newbish) trader's dillema. Oops, you just invested in stock/asset/forex and the price went down, it could recover tomorrow, or next year... If you sell now you lose, do you really have something else in mind that would make you more money before the time it takes to recover, even incurring in a temporary loss?

It also has to do with the trader's strategy. Short or long, diversified investment? Any parallel business to keep the cash flow going in?
4365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you are buying BTC in 2019 because you think it is Bitcoin, you are being foo on: January 19, 2019, 12:46:32 PM
If you are buying BTC in 2019 because you think it is Bitcoin, you are being fooled. You actually are looking for BCH, the peer to peer electronic cash system for online payments.
This troll post should be moved into the Altcoin Discussion area where it belongs...
And besides, that altcoin has been a failure, forked already, becoming even more failure. Hopefully Bitmain should go back to doing asics now that they moved Jihan Wu away, precisely for making the company lose money over things like making an altcoin instead of sticking to (their) core business...
4366  Other / Off-topic / Re: what do you think about electric cars? on: January 19, 2019, 03:41:19 AM
I don't know its good or not cause this cars are more smart, but cars on gasoline are more faster, so what do you think about this? Undecided

Electric cars are like digital cameras; gasoline cars like film cameras. Undoubtedly, the first will end replacing the second, and soon people will forget what it was to burn fossil fuel to move a car, same way youngsters might never see a photographic film and many other obsolete technologies that were such a revolution in their time.

In fact, prepare to see the demise of fuel stations, just like you seldom see photographic development shops anymore.

The simplicity of the pure (not hybrid) electric car is the determining factor. Speaking of analogies, have you seen the difference inside a CRT and LCD monitor? Which one is simpler? Which one you see today? Now do the same to a car. Ever seen the Tesla insides?

4367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Malware Found on a Movie Downloaded via Torrent Steals your Crypto on: January 19, 2019, 03:19:18 AM
I think I'm this day and age it is highly irresponsible to not have antivirus not only related to protecting your crypto but for the computer in general. So many threats get discovered every day by anti viruses, it is scary. And because of this, many new ways are created to scam people and infect them.
An antivirus is not going to protect you from so called 0 day exploits, (new malware), or targeted attacks (you attracted someone's attention); that is why using a secure OS should be your priority. I already gave a solid recommendation: Use Linux. That will reduce the number of threats significantly, and for truly sensitive stuff (ie cold wallets), booting a live iso should be practiced religiously (even if you are already running a linux desktop).

Torrent is simply a (decentralized, p2p) method for transferring files, what files you transfer is not the protocol's fault. Just because its a torrent doesn't mean anything. Many linux isos are distributed that way, you actually help offload servers by using that method instead of a simple download.
4368  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: January 18, 2019, 10:40:35 PM
Is it possible you're one of the few with an incompatible control board? Can you post the start up sequence from the kernel log? Curious if you have neither 512 or 1024 mb like mentioned in the FW title.

Also, check and see if your control board says XILINX on it. If not, the AB FW is incompatible with your board.

Heres the first part of the kernal log.

Code:
Machine: Altera SOCFPGA, model: Altera SOCFPGA Cyclone V
...
Memory: 1008MB = 1008MB total

Mine is:
Code:
Machine model: Xilinx Zynq
...
Memory: 884148K/1032192K available

We both have 1024 mb of ram...
4369  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: January 18, 2019, 09:21:53 PM
I upgraded to the 2017 firmware and then tried the 2018 firmware after and I get an instant error message saying its the wrong file type or something along the lines of that.  I know the R4s can be a bit fragile and every time i try to upgrade my board temps go crazy and it scares me a bit. It takes my R4 a few minutes before the fan really starts spinning every restart and the chip readings will hit the 90s. I think ill just keep the adjustable MHz version for now. I like to keep it on the lowest setting to keep board temps to a minimum.

If you are worried why don't you let the fan blow at 100%? That's how mine has always been running. With the older firmware i would sometimes see crazy temperatures (max i saw was 120) but with the newer firmware 74 is the max i have seen so far, and instead of two readings you get 4, it seems far more accurate than before. Here look:

I upgraded that R4 from 2016 firmware to 2017 and then to 2018 without any errors. Do check the file integrity of your 2018 firmware download.
4370  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: January 18, 2019, 03:42:17 PM
The last batch if 10 S15's that we acquired was during that little blip when Bitmain was selling them for $1050. Between that and the coupons we had, it paid for the tariff and shipping. The M10 looks like a good machine but @ 65w/TH the efficiency is too low. We're planning to deploy a total of 36 S15 by the end if Jan and run them full power the rest of the winter. That will give us 1PH. Then change them over to LPM starting in May when we start to have cooling challenges. Our mining room should be able to keep up with the heat very well with 36 machines running 850w ea + the Mini's, and we will be mining at a more efficient ratio during the May-Oct when our PoCo increases our electric rates slightly. In order for us to keep our contract rate with the PoCo we have to draw at least 60KVa 24/7, and in July I want to renew that contract for one more year. We subsidize the electric cost for the mining operation so this will make that more manageable and I'm hoping this last equipment upgrade will keep us mining until the halving. Can't really see beyond that, but I don't think there will be anymore new form factors or revolutionary new increases in efficiency in the next 18 months, so this is what we came up with to keep us mining for one more generation of gear. We can support up to 80 S15's on the current rack (we have total capacity of 150KVa), and our power cost goes down the more we use, so if the gear gets cheaper later in the year we can add more capacity if conditions look favorable. We've been mining since the S5's, so this will be the fourth cycle of gear we've gone through.

But the M10 is 16nm while the S15 is 7nm. Don't you think MicroBT will come out with something 7nm in less than 18 months? Bitmain is losing ground IMO.
4371  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Braiins OS: open-source mining firmware [S9, T1]. New release includes AsicBoost on: January 18, 2019, 08:52:48 AM
I have one S9 that displays Temp 1 and Temp 2 as 0 for all chains.  Is this a known issue and is there a fix?

It is a known issue, (temperature sensors not supported by Braiins OS in some batch/rev. models) hopefully it will be fixed in the next release this month...
4372  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: January 18, 2019, 08:45:28 AM
FYI, the debate over "keeping it all together" started WITH the Apollo program, and physics/math defeated it.

But the concepts continued, and found advocates during the 1980s. In the 1990s BMDO created the Delta Clipper test vehicle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2sHf-udJI8

That used four RL10 h2/o2 engines as a proof of concept. That's where these ideas come from, they do not originate with SpaceX.

With Mars mission profiles though, I can guarantee you that the concept drawing you showed me is not feasible and the opposite of optimum. Let's just say it's ridiculous. Elon Musk is not going to open up Mars to humanity with bad ideas. But who knows, maybe someone will talk some sense into him.

I am curious, though. Why would you not see the merit in a true spacecraft, something that could loop continually  between Mars and Earth? It could have artificial gravity, use ion propulsion, be extremely lightweight as it would never be stressed by gravitational fields, and in every way be optimized for deep space extended travel. As an example of this, consider that you could attach a suitable propulsion unit, and send the ISS to mars and back.

Then you would have ferry style transports at each planet.

That would have been a good question to him in that Reddit AMA about SpaceX and Mars. Of course I see the merit, i have read about that idea before, and see it as perfectly valid. I also consider that loop ferry sort of like a moving space station. Perhaps shielding against the sun radiation bursts could be one problem, the ISS wasn't designed for that but another station/spacecraft could. If SpaceX's plan goes ahead, that very ship in the proposal could be doing the loops as well.

Almost nothing in SpaceX is original, they simply made things commercially possible after so much government stagnation. That's quite a feat, for someone who was just another geek programming in a garage like some people here, who became millionaire (by selling Paypal) and instead of sitting on his money, decided to push things for humanity realizing dreams considered "impossible" by most...
4373  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: January 18, 2019, 02:27:25 AM
So, update. we got 2 more S15's in today. These are 2 of the 27TH models. Put them on the rack and they came right up on the network. So for the 3 that were giving us trouble, I took a laptop and a little VPN router that I have and direct connected each unit to the laptop via the router, then ran WireShark and found the IP the S15 was broadcasting. That got me in, and I programmed a static IP to each S15, reconnected, and they came up just fine on our regular LAN. Not sure what the issue with getting a DHCP assignment is for these units (they are running the same firmware versions as other units that worked fine to begin with). In any case, have 18 on the rack now running 100%. The two units that had the PSU problem at 240v already went back to bitmain for warranty repair.

Onward and upward. Smiley

Maybe your dhcp server is having trouble? That's one more reason i would recommend to set networking manually in all miners. Perhaps the only moment you'd need dhcp is when its brand new and you need to log in to configure it the first time into a proper manually set address, like you just did Smiley
4374  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin adoption: Don't just sit down, do something on: January 18, 2019, 02:14:56 AM
Both ETH and BTC have huge fees from time to time and I can't in good faith recommend them to anyone.

That was when the network was overloaded, as of current I believe it takes about $0.1cent +/- to excute a transaction on the ethereum blockchain and as of bitcoin I haven't done transact for quite some time but i believe the fees will be in cents too.  We have various cryptocurrency so if bitcoin fees becomes high a merchant can have other options for the main time. I believe the goals is to get cryptocurrency adopted with bitcoin plotting the adoption.

In the last 6 months or so, i have made all my bitcoin transactions using the smallest possible amount, which is 1sat/B. That results in a typical tx fee is under 1000 satoshis, usually under 500 (depending on inputs), and gets confirmed within the hour, sometimes within the block (10 minutes).

For reference: 1000 satoshis = 3¢

In the near future, Lightning Network enabled wallets would allow your barbershop to accept bitcoin payments instantly, in fact he could have a "tab" for frequent clients, and further bitcoin updates would allow him to do that even offline...

There was no need for you to waste time with altcoins, bitcoin is becoming even better for business and small "Lightning" payments.
4375  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Updating advice? on: January 18, 2019, 01:53:41 AM
I like Electrum for speed, and Bitcoin-core for safety. Of course you can make cold (paper) wallets with either.
You can move your funds from one address to another, even within the same wallet if you want.

I don't think you need to do anything, if you have your privatekey or seed words safe. If it were me, i would do any such operations (ie. moving funds from a cold wallet to another) from a live iso running linux.

Of course you can create a new cold wallet using the same linux live iso. Boot Lubuntu or simillar, install Electrum, make a new wallet, copy the seed words manually (by hand) in a sheet of paper, print or copy the wallet addresses and turn off the pc. And now you have (new) cold wallet unreacheable from the net.

Just remember those seed words need to be safeguarded, and make another copy (by hand as well) and store it in a physically different place.

4377  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another win for the merit system. Thank you LoyceV on: January 17, 2019, 09:51:56 PM
Each time a user successfully rank up and that user have been putting some effort in posting right with quality, it's a win for the merit system. At the beginning of this year I set a goal of ranking up to full memeber after calculating my merit ratio of receiving aleast 1merit every three days but to my surprise it took me just 17days to receive 40+merits without posting any out standing post. If there was any myth that an average poster (like myself) can't rank up due to the merit system then I have busted that myth. I'll like to thank LoyceV most especially for giving me that super advice back in September 2018  to clean up my account and get a fresh start. Which I did and it's paying off.

In conclusion, I'll like to use this opportunity in thanking all my merit fans publicly for constantly rewarding me for my little efforts and give an advice to those aspiring for a full member or member rank, always keep a clean posting history as you post with quality.

Thanks you everyone I'm now a FULL MEMBER.

Congratulations on your promotion. I have a long experience with internet forums, but this is the only one i have seen with such a system. I lurked for years not paying much attention to merits, thinking it was cosmetic like in most forums (simply by increasing the number of posts), but this is quite different. And it seems to work too!
4378  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Telegram groups for Bitcoin on: January 17, 2019, 09:21:43 PM
I wouldn't join a telegram group if I'm looking for news. I can visit easily crypto news websites such as

Funny considering those sites have official telegram groups for you to get the same news, without having to open a browser.
Within Telegram itself all you have to do is use search for finding groups or news you want delivered. So, kinda like RSS next generation.
Indeed Telegram has two types of groups: Read only for things like news, and discussion groups. There are also bots, LOTS of bots, many are free open source... Like the rest of internet, Telegram has lots of good and bad, you have to discern what is worth your time and what is not. I like how many exchanges and asic miner companies have official groups in there, but there are also scammers trying to impersonate official support. Of course ICOs and altcoins have heavy presence as well.
4379  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: January 17, 2019, 09:03:06 PM
Note that I referenced THINGS THAT EXIST. The Orion exists and is a deep space capable vehicle.

If you want to extend the subject to conceptual plans, would you like to see a hundred? Of which you have shown one, right?

There is a lot wrong with this particular scheme that you linked to. It may interest you that for the US Apollo program, a similar "single big rocket lander and return vehicle" concept was considered, and  abandoned, in favor of the Saturn stages, command module and lunar excursion module.

Mathematics and physics dictated that decision. The original research paper comparing and contrasting the two approaches is available from the NASA archives; but one may also calculate directly.

Spacecraft are optimized to transit in space. They can use propulsion systems that won't work to land on planets or take off, but which are very practical for missions like 8 months to mars. (VASIMR, ion propulsion).

Landers, re entry vehicles and launch vehicles are all optimized for specific mission profiles.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for going into space and staying there. But there's either a practical business model or there's not, and more of the same-old-same-old grubbing for government dollars is not going to make this all happen. Nay-sayers shut down the Apollo program early, in the Clinton years NASA was given a choice: The space station or the shuttle.

In that case there is nothing to do but wait until they deliver. Do you think SpaceX doesn't know about the advantages / disadvantages of staging? I see them using stages in their current rockets, up to the falcon heavy...

On the other hand, how many years have passed since the Apollo program? You'd think some advances have been made in all these years. They want to reuse parts, yet they can't recover the second stage in their current rockets. Perhaps keeping it all together allows them to achieve that goal?

In my opinion, they are going to waste more fuel by not using stages, but don't forget they don't plan to go straight away, they plan to refuel in orbit so the fuel they need is only to reach orbit, not Mars. The more efficient engines for vacuum/light atmosphere are already attached to the spacecraft.

Once (if) these concepts become reality, we can see if they were wrong or not. At the very least, they have been delivering results so far.
4380  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to be A Good Miner on: January 17, 2019, 02:06:06 PM
It comes down to electricity costs. Currently anything above 0.07 kWh is probably not worth it. If you DO have cheap electricity, its simply a matter of purchasing an asic, plug it into a 200v~240v circuit (those are usually found for clothes dryer or air conditioner) and give it internet via lan cable, configure it like you would a router, and mine away. Taking into account the things are VERY LOUD, so you need to find ways to quiet it down if there is people living nearby.

You can get an used S9 asic miner for about $200 nowdays.
Larger operations are another matter entirely, but at least this will get you started.

Remember, without cheap electricity it is not worth it. Unless bitcoin price climbs up.
