4381  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Why so few immersion cooled custom builds/Mods? on: April 13, 2017, 02:27:19 AM
2 things drives it: Max kw in smallest size package and moving that heat load somewhere else to be gotten rid of. For us that is a plant cooling water supply running up to 110F, preferably under 95F. Well, that and lack of fans/filters to replace.

Ok that makes 3.
Maybe 4.
What is this? The Spanish Inquisition??! <apologies to Monty Python>

A typical 30kv supply good for 20kw is about 2ft-square-sided cube and that is mainly due to spacing needed due to the high voltage.
4382  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Why so few immersion cooled custom builds/Mods? on: April 13, 2017, 01:39:49 AM
I'd like to see more immersion cooled mining setups as well...  Having the benefit of learning from someone else's mistakes might give me the confidence to try it myself.
For decades I've worked with immersion cooling all the time in HVDC supplies producing 10's of kwatts and will categorically state the thermal xfr fluid is a key to it. Yes in my case has to withstand 30-50kv but more importantly has to be thermally stable, have excellent heat transfer ability and, most importantly not attack other materials. Off the shelf mineral oil attacks hoses, seals, and electronic components. Due to its viscosity it pumps/flows very poorly.

Yes having a horse trough (preferably a real metal tank) full of miners in a fluid like the one from Clearco should work great. I use it in work and is near-water thin so pumps/flows very well. So far only caution about materials is pure silicon-rubber -- makes it swell.

Since miners like a high temp, say a bath running around 50-60C, that makes for a great delta-T between the fluid and outside ambient resulting in a smaller hot-side air/fluid exchanger needed.

Yes the Clearco fluid is pricey but way way less than Novec is. Plus of course, if left in the open on a very hot day or in case of a drastic thermal event caused by no flow/pump & fans status/overtemp cutouts, several hundred $ (or several thousand $ if Novec) of it does not go away....
4383  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Announces the Antminer R4 and APW5 Power Supply, Designed for Silence on: April 13, 2017, 01:23:57 AM
Looks to be pretty obvious:
  Power OFF of course.

Unplug the PCIe connectors to bad board. It's a PIA to squeeze the tabs on the connectors - needle-nose pliers is a great help.

Unplug data cable from board by squeezing the tab on the cable while rocking the connector back and forth to remove it.
Look at front of miner and take out the screws holding the board supports.

 Remove board.[

WOW, that is ALOT of Wattage!  It does not make sense Hash/Watt...   as compared to the S9.
You can have a power efficient miner....or you can have a reliable miner with a real chance at reaching ROI before falling apart.
they can make both, they choose not to..
besides, these T9s have no chance to make roi at these prices.. even with zero electricity costs you are 12-14 months away.. thats if the difficulty doesnt go up, which it will.. you are probably realistically looking at 18-22 months roi.
only one making money is bitmain.
Let me guess: Bet you don't own any miners do ya?

Same was said of the s2, s3, s4, et al when they came out. I paid a helluva lot more $$ for them and guess what? All paid for themselves and more to the point, paid for upgrading/expansion. Currently bouncing around 230THs (I'm Fuzzy on Kano), all paid for from farm income...

Got a T9 on it's way as we type that will replace a s7 batch-1 I'm finally retiring. Still is running a steady trouble-free 5.3-5.6THs. Checked and see that the s7 batch-1 cost $1,823 + shipping. Despite that it was long ago paid for. Still makes money but I have a power budget to stay under while expanding the farms hash rate... Depending on how ya look at it, yesterdays 4-block run had the farm in just that one day pay for nearly 1/2 the cost of the new T9 coming which cost BTC0.996 inc UPS shipping Wink

Please ref https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1604125.0 dealing with liquid/immersion cooling a s9.

Mineral oil is NOT a good thing to use:
Only moderate heat-capacity (how well it absorbs/releases heat)
Viscosity highly variable with temp
Even when warm, is still not easy to pump
Attacks many plastics including Nylon (PCIe connectors), PCV (wire insulation) and elastomer (rubber) capacitor seals.

Much better choice are thermal transfer fluids designed for use with electronics and electrical parts such as http://www.clearcoproducts.com/dielectric-silicone-fluids-sto-50.html

Water-thin meaning easy to pump and flows very well around components, does NOT attack rubber/plastic, etc., very good thermal properties.

Repair finished, R4B4 is being sent back to Hoth...  Fingers crossed all is good!
Well that didn't take long...  R4 got back to the Hoth mine and after a few weeks has dropped a board (again) and is running at 1/2 speed.
Lame.  Angry
I'll bet it is the top board that's out, right?
My gimpy batch-6 I got had a board (top one) crap out after just 24hrs. Since I'll (eventually) have it fixed in CO just been happy with it running @4.7TH and only pulling 430w.

Getting warm here so moved my R4 batch-4 from office to the break room. For a while it dinna wanna fire up the top board. Finally after it being warmed by the lower board, several hard boots later it is back up full 8.7TH. Had me scared there for a while...

So far in both cases with the dead/nearly dead top board main diagnostic is that the lil' red LED that indicates Vcore supply is live is either just barely lit or not lit at all.

Bitmain's variant of ASICBoost https://www.google.com/patents/CN105245327A?cl=en
And yer right. The abstract mentions disabling a part of the logic during some operations. Aside from that is wayyyy beyond my depth.
4389  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Will Bitmain Antminers S9 and T9 be obsolete if Segwit is launced ? on: April 12, 2017, 12:33:03 AM
So Bitmain miners are the best to purchase because of this boost functionality?
NO!
Read the frickin' thread... It is NOT being used (according to Bitmain) and other un-named companies have it or a variant of it in their chips as well so is a moot point. The circuits/logic are present but so far unused, probably because it does not deliver significant real advantage.
4390  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - carrier grade, data center ready mining rigs on: April 12, 2017, 12:27:24 AM
Hey Guy!

Please post how you arrived at "15% power savings". What are the components of the practical loss versus theoretical gain? How much worse is the highest achievable overclock or lowest achievable undervolt? How much worse is the useable manufacturing yield?
Is rather what I was thinking about.

Ok, AB allows for somewhat faster processing of a possible hash by being able to internally come up with a new hash to work on vs getting new work from a pool/server right?

But - since most of the power is consumed when the ASICs actually clock to crunch the numbers, where does energy saving come in? When they are twiddling their thumbs waiting for new work power consumption drops quite a bit. so I would think it rather evens out, no?
4391  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Will Bitmain Antminers S9 and T9 be obsolete if Segwit is launced ? on: April 12, 2017, 12:14:49 AM
Ok, this one references Bitmain directly filed in the EU
https://worldwide.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?II=30&ND=3&adjacent=true&locale=en_EP&FT=D&date=20160113&CC=CN&NR=105245327A&KC=A#

Interesting that the date of original doc is Feb. 2017...

However, Bitmains patent translated from Chinese https://www.google.com/patents/CN105245327A?cl=en has a Priority date of Aug. 2015.
4392  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Will Bitmain Antminers S9 and T9 be obsolete if Segwit is launced ? on: April 11, 2017, 11:36:53 PM
I wonder if Bitmain's Chinese Patented method of using Merkle Collisions (I do like that name better...) lists your work and that of the ASICBoost Authors as Prior Art? I would hope that the Chinese Patent process would at least require mention of that...
I don't have any information about Bitmain's patent, except rumors that it is copy of ASICBoost.
Found it... Surprised no one else bothered to Google it...
https://www.google.com/patents/WO2015077378A1?cl=en
The fact that it lists Timo Tobias HANKE, Sergio Demian Lerner as the Authors suggests to me that Bitmain bought the rights to it (for in China). Hmm. The Plot thickens. Wink

Rather helps confirm my feelings about AB not being worth the fuss given it. thx

#%(*^&#! There I go falling for this freakin' thread again...  Lips sealed
4394  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What setup for 10.000$ and (very) low power price on: April 11, 2017, 05:48:13 PM
Agree. So far the T9 has no reports of any issues vs constant chatter about the s9's. Personally, I've not had any serious issues with the s9 and have 11 of them ranging from Batch-1 up to the latest shipped last month. However, many other folks  -- not so lucky with their s9's...
4395  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Launches the New Antminer T9 Bitcoin Miner on: April 11, 2017, 05:43:40 PM
Well, so far so happy with how my 1st T9 is performing I decided to get another with the 'before April 15' ship date to upgrade the main farm.

This time will be kind of a sad occasion as I will be retiring my one of my s7b1's. <sniff> That sucka has been solid as a rock for the past years holding a steady 5.3-5.5THs as reported on Kano but since I have a power budget finally time to take advantage of the T9's over 2x speed at the cost of only ~100w more power.
4396  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer T9 - Why would you purchase one ? on: April 11, 2017, 02:01:07 PM
T9 thread is here  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1755286.0 about 12 lines below this one
And the T9/s9 will NOT become obsolete if segwit is voted in. They will co-exist just fine.
4397  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Will Bitmain Antminers S9 and T9 be obsolete if Segwit is launced ? on: April 11, 2017, 01:03:50 PM
Xir, you miss my point: this kerfuffle over asicboost is IMHO pretty pointless. According to the Bitmain blog 'others' (Avalon/BitFury/BW?) also have the logic in their chips. That I have no reason to doubt. Thing is, if AB was/is so great, it would be in use by all the miner makers and after a blip in diff everyone would be mining at the same level again.
4398  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer T9 - Why would you purchase one ? on: April 11, 2017, 12:55:27 PM
How about reading the existing T9 thread?
All the reasons are in there and have been given ad-nausea.
4399  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Will Bitmain Antminers S9 and T9 be obsolete if Segwit is launced ? on: April 10, 2017, 11:31:54 PM
I'll agree with kano aside from one point, re:
Quote
and saying they have paid for the rights for it in china.
Actually Bitmain said "they have the patent on it in China". Emphasis to 'in China' is required. If the Published Authors behind ASICBOOST did not file for copyright/patent protection in China or for that matter most any other specific country then they are Boned. Legally Bitmain is well within their right to claim it as theirs (in China) and do note that to cover their ass they specifically mention their 'right to use in in their mining operations located in China.

In other words, the logic may be present in the ASICs but to minimize Export issues (patent/copyright infringement) it does not run on miners outside of China (so far they say). Not saying that it is right -- just that that is how International law views it.

Been there, done that. Filing for International patent coverage is a Bitch and a half... At least THAT is one thing that the EU made easier for those concerned. File once and covered for all member States. Asia OTH....
