442  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: [500 BTC AVAILABILITY] CIUCIU'S Guaranteed Weekly Term Deposits at 1.5% on: July 15, 2012, 04:17:38 PM
I already have 10 BTC invested,  but I might want to invest 10 BTC more. Can I just reuse my old deposit address or will I have to use a new one?
Also, I am receiving 2% weekly on my initial deposit. What will happen if I deposit 10 BTC more?
Will I receive 1,5% over 10 BTC and 2% over the older 10 BTC (so 1,75% average)?
2% over 20 BTC?
1,5% over 20 BTC?

Thanks for answering my questions Smiley

Hi,

Yes, the second deposit will get 1.5% and the first 2%. Use the same address if you want to deposit.

Thank you.

Sounds good. Send another 10 BTC!

So how is this latest disaster going to affect the payouts? When will the payouts resume?

Hey,

I already have 10 BTC invested with you, but I would like to deposit 10 BTC more. Can I just reuse my old deposit address or will you have to send me a new one? Thanks!

Wow. I honestly don't know what to say. Thank you so much for this very kind gesture, Zhou Tong!
This wasn't necessary at all, but you have no idea how much I appreciate this.
I wish you all the best, and hopefully this whole disaster won't haunt you much longer.

Thanks again! Smiley

449  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Show Message/Counter when address pool since last backup has been depleted. on: July 13, 2012, 12:58:32 AM
RE: 101 or 103 unused keys in the keypool:  That's normal.  Here's the sequence of events that causes it:

+ You do something that requests a new key from the keypool. Several things do that (including the 'getinfo' RPC call -- it requests a key from the keypool so it can report the keypoololdest time).
+ The keypool automatically adds new keys so there are always at least 100 (by default)
+ The something you did returns the key back to the keypool, so now there are 100+1

I tend to have 104 keys in my keypools, because I do a lot of 4-core CPU mining on testnet-in-a-box setups, and the 4 miner threads each grab a keypool key that is released when bitcoind quits.

RE: better backup:  good idea. However, the keypool might not survive for much longer; they're likely to be replaced by Hierarchical Deterministic Wallets (see https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/BIP_0032 ).

Wow, that sounds even better. This means a single backup is sufficient to never lose any coins, correct? Ofcourse backups are still required to keep labels intact, but this would be way better than thread number 132497 with a person complaining he lost private keys to his funds. Awesome job, Gavin!

Great ideas guys! Looking forward to seeing something get implemented.
Personally I think DeathAndTaxes ideas are really good. No matter how annoying those messages are, proper backups are really needed to get Bitcoin to the masses. Losing coins due to computer crashes will turn people off, even if it's their own fault, so forcing backups is a good thing in my opinion. I also agree that the default pool size should be increased. Two more things come to mind though:

-Do you guys think a warning message should be displayed if someone is backing up a non-encrypted wallet.dat? People could lose their coins if they backup their unencrypted wallet to an insecure place.
-Do you guys think there should be a message of some kind that explains to backup the wallet to separate locations? It won't surprise me to see lots of people backing their wallet up to C:\Backups\  Tongue

Hey guys Smiley
My Samsung Galaxy S III arrived today, I have already setup our MtGox,my Gmail and GLBSE account to have a two way factor authentication with my smartphone. This sound greatly increase the security on these account, I have also talked to CxC about if they can add Google authenticator support.
A good first steep in increasing the security of Gamma Bitcoin Fund.
//DeaDTerra

Don't forget to backup the authentication keys to multiple different locations. (Encrypted ofcourse Wink)
How do I do that?
Do I just manually write down the whole key or is there a automatic backup built in?
//DeaDTerra

I just wrote down the key, hope there is a better way:)
Save the QR code image down and throw it in a truecrypt volume.

This. Or you can save the authentication code just below the QR code (I think). Or both. Anyway, the most important thing is that you encrypt it, and store it in multiple locations. Smiley

453  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Show Message/Counter when address pool since last backup has been depleted. on: July 11, 2012, 11:33:32 PM
Currently there's no easy way to see if the address pool of 100 new addresses since your last backup has been used up. Bitcoin-qt currently has a backup feature build in, so wouldn't it be quite easy to implement either a counter or message that notifies the user when a new backup is needed to keep his/her funds safe? This counter could be reset each time a new backup is created inside Bitcoin-qt. Now I know some people use different/automatic backup procedures, but a simple command in the config file could disable this feature.

Thoughts/suggestions?
454  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Backup of wallet.dat enough? on: July 11, 2012, 11:28:21 PM
By default, Bitcoin-qt creates and maintains an address pool of 100 unused addresses. If you backup your wallet.dat file, this pool will be backed up as well, since it's included in the file. Now there are multiple things that use up one address:

-Sending BTC. By sending BTC any change gets send back to you to a new address, which is selected from the pool.
-Creating a new receiving address. This will also select 1 address from the pool of 100 addresses.

As long as you haven't used up the entire pool of addresses, you backup is the only thing that's needed to get your coins. If you run out of those 100 addresses you need to create another backup, so that coins received on new addresses that weren't included in the original backup, are backed up to your new backup. It is possible to increase the size of address pool if you don't want to backup as often, but I'm not sure how. Maybe someone else could chime in?

Anyway, here's a more thorough explanation of what I've just said: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Man_page#Why_must_users_back_up_their_wallets_every_100_actions.3F
455  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Kim Dotcom looking for suggestions on payments on: July 11, 2012, 12:46:04 PM
He really could throw bitcoin into the mainstream if he launches bitcoin support for his new music service.
Do we already want this though?

I can't speak for everybody, but yeah I would want this. I want to be able to have my whole product chain using bitcoins, at this moment I still need to exchange to USD to pay for certain parts of it. Mainstream means more merchants, which is a good thing.

As much as I would want this, I don't think Bitcoin is ready yet. Look at how much faster the blockchain is growing with a popular service such as SatoshiDice, which only caters towards Bitcoin users. Now imagine a giant such as MegaUpload, which caters to a much much wider audience, starts using Bitcoin. The blockchain growth would be out of control. Coming up with and implementing features to keep the blockchain growth in check should be top priority right now in my opinion.

Yup, you need those brackets. Are you sure you can't type them on Android?
That's lame.

Here, copy and paste these two so you can make it :p

Dividends are late again? Sad

Yes, just for last week, it will be bundled into next week's dividend.

Also the BFL single has been mining since 6 PM yesterday, it has the 896 MHash/s firmware running, and is operating at a cool 53C without throttling.

Very very nice, thanks for the update! Keep up the good work Smiley
I wish you all the best with your marriage Smiley

As of this time, all planning for the wedding is done, which frees up some of my time.

Could you please use some of that time to keep us updated? Thanks.
