Consider a donation to your favorite free bitcoins site to help out noobs looking to get their first btc payment.

A question to the users on this forum - would you prefer a proportional reward system, or PPLNS? I feel like the current proportional system would be good for people who can't mine all the time, but it also means that the first users are going to get a lot more BTC than those who come later. Thoughts/opinions?

Myself I don't mine 24/7 but usually shut down at night so I might be interested in a system that would be best for that way of mining, if I was going to use your pool.
Is the proportional reward system best for that?

I tried some links at your site, using firefox, and got the This Connection is Untrusted warning.
technical details:
www.btccan.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for the following names:
  pool.btccan.com , btccan.com

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

---

You might want to do something about to keep from putting people off.

Also I don't see any mention of fees.  How do you compare to other pools in that regard?

Hello Portnoy, I think you may have visited the site during an update (yes, I'm using my production site for development... my profs would have killed me!). My SSL certificate is for "btccan.com" and "pool.btccan.com" only, not "www.btccan.com". This should all be fixed now, as I updated the site to redirect "www.btccan.com" to "btccan.com".

As for fees, there is a 3.5% service fee. This is to cover the cost of server hosting, SSL registration, and ramen noodles. There is a donation option as well, though this is optional. Once merged mining is enabled, there will be no fee for Namecoins.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hey Logan,

All the links I tried seem to work without that warning now. It still appears with "ww.btccan.com" though... maybe it is just a matter of time for the changes to propagate through the web.

Thanks for the info about the 3.5% fee.  You might want to put information like that on your site somewhere if you haven't already.  That and your street address ( Toronto, right? ) etc. to help show visitors and potential users that you are a reputable business.

Good luck with your venture, I will be watching.

4425  Economy / Micro Earnings / Re: Where do I get free Bitcoins? on: August 09, 2012, 03:23:50 PM
A reply I made in another thread about the complaint that free bitcoin sites, like the ones listed here, are not worth it... what good are they if one only gets very very small amounts that is not worth the time... etc.

---

Well no one, I hope, is suggesting that this is a viable source of income which
will allow one to give up their regular job.    Cheesy
( then again, who knows what 0.0053 BTC [the amount complained about] might be worth several years from now. )

When I first found out about Bitcoin I wanted to try it out as soon as possible; I am sure many other newbies are the same.

Signing up to some exchange or using some of the other methods for buying bitcoins can be a hassle, and can have fees higher
than someone just wanting to try things out would like.

So using these few free bitcoins sites can be a good way of trying things out... it is exciting to get that first payment to ones
wallet... and if other newbies are like me they will be just as excited to gather enough together to send them off to a friend
or a worthy charity or the like, in order to try sending as well as receiving.

And getting new users excited about Bitcoin and getting them using it right away can only be good for Bitcoin as a whole.

Thanks for the input, even though cointube doesn't fit the criteria enough to be included in the OP.
Feel free to submit sites you think qualify as 'free bitcoin sites' to the thread in my sig. as well.
4427  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will deflation be the fatal weakness of bitcoin? on: August 08, 2012, 04:05:14 PM
Unless the US Gov explicitly declares BTC to be illegal for use (THAT would be quite crazy), ...

Not surprising, though. The US govt is waging war on many things, why not Bitcoin, English lawn or the number PI?

When was the last time the US govt won a war it waged?  I mean based on actual facts and not reports from
FOX news...

4429  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will deflation be the fatal weakness of bitcoin? on: August 08, 2012, 03:05:10 PM
Useless reading. The author just avoids the topic. I repeat if someone missed my words:
The only true point why deflation was chosen as a feature of Bitcoin is to make early adopters (and Satoshi) rich.

There are several authors.  Read the whole thread.
4430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How do I spend a small amount of bitcoins? on: August 08, 2012, 01:23:14 AM
This is part of the deflation problem.  If small amounts of bitcoins become unspendable then over time lots of bitcoins will be destroyed.  With US dollars lost pennies are constantly replaced via the bank.  But bitcoin doesn't have a replacement mechanism.  Eventually all the bitcoins will be gone.

Deflation is not a problem...

ren and stimpy

Speaking of John Kricfalusi ( who also worked on the excellent -Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures- with Ralph Bakshi ).
Has anyone been following what he has been doing lately?

He is a true innovator and creative force... something exceedingly rare in terms of cartoons these days.
You can see modern "animators" ripping off the whole Ren & Stimpy style everywhere you look...

I wonder if he could be persuaded to accept bitcoins in donation?

update on the kickstarter campaign:

Quote from: John Kricfalusi
Hi everyone

Hey I think I need some more help to make sure we make it over the hump. The pledge rate has slowed in the last few days and Cans is trending to just squeak by the finish line. But if it continues to slow, then we won't make it!

So for those of you have already pledged - thanks loads, but if you have been thinking about it and haven't yet.....BE A MAN! Or a WOMAN! Or even something less gender specific - but let's get this thing done!

This campaign is not only important to get Cans Without Labels made, it's also important just to show that this model of cartoon creation is viable. If it works this time, we may have discovered a way to make the kind of cartoony cartoons -with lots of custom drawings and acting that you just can't get on TV. No middle managers this way! You are the decision makers.

I have more cartoons, toys and projects to share with you once this one gets funded, so MAKE IT HAPPEN FOR US! Revive "Creator Driven Cartoons" with me.

Oh and check out

http://www.nerdist.com/2012/08/john-kricfalusis-canned-laughter/

at Nerdist.com for a written interview I did yesterday talking about all kinds of fun crap!

Ask all your friends and family to do this thing! Show Granny how the internets works and get her to dip into her stinky sock full of cash.

Thanks again for all the support!

Your pal,

John K.

Today is a holiday..... in Canada eh Smiley Maybe only Ontario..

The following Canadian provinces and territories have a holiday on the first Monday of August: British Columbia (British Columbia Day), Alberta (Heritage Day), Manitoba (Civic Holiday), Saskatchewan (Saskatchewan Day), Ontario (Simcoe Day), Nova Scotia (Natal Day), Prince Edward Island (Natal Day), New Brunswick (New Brunswick Day), and the Northwest Territories (Civic Holiday).

Quebec, Newfoundland and Nunavut do not have an August long weekend holiday and therefore conduct business as usual.

But cavirtex.com ( Alberta ) is up ( although it has always been slow ) and working normally as far as I can tell.

OpenBitASIC : The Open Source Bitcoin ASIC Initiative

But there hasn't been an update since April.

The official client is still in beta. Many services related to it are just getting going as well.
Bitcoin is not yet ready for prime time. Patience.

I know your joking but if you post the date(still have flight ticket), i'll give it back, just because it would be absurd.

Flight 23 with Captain Clark
Interzone airport
Thursday late or early Monday morning and/or Friday at 3:13 PM
April 20th
Year... unknown/variable

A report was summarily submitted through the proper channels but is now out of my control.
