4421  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which is the best way to convert ltc to btc? on: January 11, 2019, 01:26:58 PM
Both Bitcoin and Litecoin have Segwit and Lightning Network. It is theoretically possible to do a direct p2p exchange without using exchanges sites. That would be "the best" way to do it in my opinion, but i guess it would need a wallet with both coins and LN support?

Of course the old fashioned way of using a normal exchange works...
4422  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it Game Over for Bitcoin? on: January 11, 2019, 01:17:11 PM
Some people like to talk about "Game Over" or Dead only because the price fluctuates, you fail to see that price of Bitcoin against fiat does not affect its design or network. It isn't like when DAO was hacked and rendered useless, or when ETH forked to "undo" a major theft. Only Bitcoin has kept its promise: Once in the blockchain, always in the blockchain.

Bitcoin and the bitcoin network couldn't care less for the fiat price equivalent unless its people living from trading, but thats not bitcoin's fault. It has responded as designed, following its code design.

Bitcoin is never ending, even if you personally decide to not touch it. The genie is out of the bottle...
4423  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it fair to call it burst of bitcoin bubble. on: January 11, 2019, 01:05:48 PM
It almost, but never touched 20k, let alone 21k...
I wouldn't call it a burst of a bubble. It was more like an abnormal inflammation that healed itself back.
4424  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Scam?? on: January 11, 2019, 01:01:55 PM
I've been talking with a guy for a few months from Facebook, about 6 weeks ago he persuaded me to do some Bitcoin Cloud Mining. He had me purchase 0.1BTC to start mining with and said that each mining cycle would last 300 hours, around 2 weeks. Also that I wouldn't be able to withdraw anything for the first three cycles.
After the first cycle, he then told me I had to deposit another 0.1BTC for that and another for the third cycle. He never told me I'd have to do that at the very beginning. But I would have mined 1.0BTC by the end of the three cycles. He also has my password. Said he needed it any back when I joined Blockchain, so that he could authorize me. he has been in regular contact, which has led me to believe and trust him.

Today the third mining cycle was complete so I should be able to withdraw. He is telling me now that I should get a block reward of 12.5BTC (received an email from a Gmail address saying this), but to withdraw anything, I have to deposit 5.8% of the non-spendable amount in my Blockchain. 5.8% of 13.5BTC is 0.783 (over $3200). An amount that I do not have. And I'm not paying this because I really don't know if I trust this guy.

Is this a scam? I have a bad feeling about this email coming from a Gmail address. And 12.5BTC as a reward seems way too good to be true.
I currently have 0.77BTC as non-spendable in my Blockchain. Should I change my password and keep that in there?
Thanks!

Ugh, definite scam. Cloud mining is very scammy in itself, but this guy even asked for more money in the process, and promised an impossible return. Why you didn't ask for this kind of thing here BEFORE committing your money?

61 watt per TH thats not bad at all. I like the fans running at 3k instead of the typical 6k...

Why don't you build a wooden box with two 6" holes to put the miner inside, and use that insulating fabric to cover the inside of it, and add a bit of insulating 6" ducts to the holes? (It resembles a car muffler), something like this:

4427  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SpaceX and the prospects of Mars colonization. on: January 10, 2019, 11:37:21 PM
According to the plans published, there won't be any artificial gravity on BFR.
I clearly remember Elon Musk saying the BFR will be constantly accelerating to maintain gravity until the middle where it turns around start constant deceleration intended to keep gravity as well. The 0G would only last while orbiting and when turning around in mid route to switch from acceleration into deceleration.

I generally agree with most of the points, but I think small colonies are feasible, similar to the Antartica bases. If they build underground, the radiation and weather issues would probably be mitigated. I would guess if they happen to find some valuable mineral (ie. Gold) things would move on nicely (and the gold price would go down nicely as well...).

gold? the cost to move a pound just to the moon is about 3x the price of gold, to get something on a return trip would be far, far higher.

as for constant acceleration, that would require one of the several versions of ion propulsion, which would create a very, very slight gravity. not really noticeable. better to just consider as no gravity.

bfr is a launch vehicle, not a spacecraft. it could launch anything....

i stand by my former comment...

....it will be the Moon, not Mars, that is first colonized. The Moon is lacking in some elements which makes it harder, but it has massive solar energy power source. The reason it will be the moon is quite simple. There is no viable business model for Mars; there is one for the Moon, and that would be 3 week vacations.

You are right, the ship itself has a fancier name, the BFR is just the (reusable) launch vehicle which was also renamed to something I forgot.
I believe SpaceX also has plans for the moon, and NASA is already thinking of playing in the asteroid field, something about towing one to the moon orbit, or was that also scrapped under Trump's administration?

Anyway space has multiple commercial benefits, and they have already done what nobody else did before: reuse stages, to lower launch costs. SpaceX can probably remain afloat while the master goal of going to Mars (and back) becomes reality, tho Elon Musk himself refuses to go, he sent his car for lulz...

Though past results do not necessarily repeat themselves, that graph looks like a probable prediction. In my opinion anyway. Different events might delay or accelerate those patterns, but they look spot on to me. Only time can tell...
4430  Economy / Speculation / Re: How would a government go about getting into BTC? on: January 10, 2019, 11:18:27 PM
So there's been some Russian no mark dribbling on about his government getting on Yobit and spunking their reserves on Bitcoin in the next few weeks.

Of course, dear.

But on a purely practical level if a government were serious about acquiring some, how do you think they would go about it?

Would they keep the stuff nicked by law enforcement? Look into mining? Buy through intermediaries? Be open about it or do it on the sly to make sure us scum didn't pump to rinse them? Would they collude with other governments or establish a position in secret before anyone else?

They could diversify their reserves by purchasing some? Mining would be having a State mining business, not unlike the oil ones in many countries.

They could amend their legislation for these choices. I think Russia and Paraguay are seriously planning to have a State (crypto) mining company. I remember reading something about a deal from Putin and Bitfury... And the Paraguay State dam getting a place ready for mining.

I'm not sure about the confiscated bitcoin. Aren't they forced to auction those?

The bullish flag that's been forming for the last 3 days or so didn't hold or didn't build enough momentum causing the price to drop to $3500-$3600 again. This is alarming for some specially who keeps their hopes alive that the price will have a good bounce to $5000-$6000 and move further away from the last bottom. We have been talking about the inverse H&S for the past days and it seems we got the answer today.

They are not wrong, its just a matter of time frame. Of course that means your funds need to remain frozen if you don't want to lose. Remember, you never lose unless you sell below of what you bought. Are you willing to wait? Most won't, and lose. But those few who do, will later win.
4432  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-01-10]Nick Szabo: Central Banks May Turn To Crypto Reserves Over Gold on: January 10, 2019, 10:34:48 PM

let's suppose that yesterday some bank had bought bitcoin for the price of  $4000, The bank would take 4 billion dollars and Bum buys bicoin for the price of  $4000 and today they look at the bitcoin price:

1 btc =  $3500

the bank stay with many losses in less than 48 hours... bitcoin is very volatile

Lets see that in 1 year or 2, or even 10 years... Banks can afford to hold for the long run, and Asians are a bit more long term minded, so it wouldn't surprise me if Asian Banks do it first...

Bitcoin is an asset that has gone from zero to $3500 over the span of 10 years, not from 20k to 4k in 1 year. Short term thinking is a problem of certain western countries, they just can't see past a year quarter...

Perhaps that explains why the majority of Bitcoin users are Chinese. That, and the fact that they hate debt. They rather live in poverty 20 years to save their earning and then buy a luxury home in a single payment, than getting in debt to buy it now and then be paying over 30 years...

The Chicago school of economy (the prevailing trend) is the one that promotes debt for "fast" growth (and its subsequent but inevitable "recession" afterwards), and that is fueled by fractional reserve banking. Entire societies are living in vapor, which could disappear tomorrow; unlike Bitcoin.

Diversifying their reserves would also shield them in case a sudden drop in the price of gold, such the discovery of a new source, or from space. Remember this is true long term thinking, not even the next decade...
4433  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All bankers hate BTC, am I right? on: January 10, 2019, 06:22:32 PM
Some will support it some will oppose it. The ones supporting will probably make more money, the ones opposing will retire and let the path clear to those who learned to benefit from it. Business as usual.

And Pangolinminer sells used 11T M3s for $50...
That price for that hashrate is truly astounding, irrespective of what its efficiency is. Do you know when I got one of the first 60Gh Avalon miners, the official price was 75BTC?

Its incredibly cheap... MicroBT has the advantage, the M10s are nearly the most efficient SHA256 miners and thats at 16nm, if they release a 7nm...

Hey all, why is this latest payout based on pool hash of 130Ph when the pool stats show 50Ph ?? Really cut my payout in half......

You don't get paid in full in the beginning, there is a "ramp up" period, this is to deter pool hoppers. But there is also a "ramp down" period, should your miner stop for whatever reason, it slowly decays instead of you getting zero immediately. I call it the PPLNS advantage. Of course if you stop mining but return quickly, it won't decay much and go back to full payments quickly.

Just check your Shift Reward and look at the red line to know where you are standing in the ramp.

You will, eventually. CPU's and GPU's will take much longer. S9's are cheap, gekko science has their newpac usb stick. So there are cost friendly options for hobbyists. I still mine with my gpu but won't go into much more detail on ck's thread as they mine altcoins to trade for BTC.
And Pangolinminer sells used 11T M3s for $50...

4438  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: what is the difference between staking and mining??? on: January 09, 2019, 11:18:17 PM
In PoW (mining) you earn coins by doing math computations.
In PoS (holding) you earn coins by keeping them in your wallet.

Of course, keeping coins in a wallet consumes less resources than doing math. They also act as nodes and use bandwidth and storage for their blockchain. But to stake coins they need to exist right? And to make them exist...

4440  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Monthly minimum wage: ~$82 is that too much to ask? on: January 09, 2019, 10:21:29 PM
The Nigeria Labour Congress are requesting for an increase in the minimum wage of her workers from N18,000 dollar equivalent = ~$49 to N30,000 =~$82. There's a law that states that every 5years a new minimum wage should be implemented but for the past (almost) decade no new minimum wage have been set.
Why am I writing this?,  Today there's said to be a planned  mass protest and if their agreement isn't met, the NLC will embark on a nationwide strike and this will lead to the  shut down of the economy of the nation not forgetting that we have our election coming up February.

Don't worry, in "socialist" Venezuela the min wage is $3,33 and will probably become $2 tomorrow. Tomorrow they are probably going announce a new "increase", but you can't race hyperinflation, it is pointless. Eventually even if they increased the min wage everyday, the real wage would keep going down faster, as it has done in the past 6 years.

I don't agree with min wages, it should be left to the market. The only thing min wages do, is remove a means of income to a group of the population. If you are not allowed to employ cheaply for menial works, you simply don't offer those job positions anymore.

There should be no min wage, period. It should be your personal decision to work or not work under those conditions.

inflation usually balances out salary increases.
Obligatory salary increases ironically induce inflation...
