4501  Economy / Speculation / Re: Lawsky outlines revisions (18Dec2014) -- bullish, bearish, or too soon to tell? on: December 18, 2014, 06:37:13 PM
The perfect storm seems to be setting itself up just fine coming up here. 2015 is the year of the Bitcoin and peoples' minds are gonna be blown in such an unbelievable way.  Wink

Time for despair, the question is who's got enough sand to deal with it. These will be the times that try men's souls. And, the usual suspects will be scooping up like there's no tomorrow. Be there or be square. Wink

Here's a nice little image I plucked from one of Nate Silver's newest articles on whether Jeb Bush is too liberal to win the GOP nomination. Nate's a top shelf pollster and is well followed. 2nd from bottom is my main point however.

Reason Jan. 2015 Issue Interview: Rand Paul on Foreign Policy Realism

Quote
Sen. Rand Paul on ISIS, the Middle East, and when America should go to war

Matt Welch from the January 2015 issue

On October 23, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) gave a major foreign policy address at the Center for the National Interest in which he declared himself a "conservative realist," aligning himself with the tradition of Ronald Reagan and Caspar Weinberger. (See "The Case for Conservative Realism.") As he did in a similar February 2013 speech at the conservative Heritage Foundation, the libertarian-leaning 2016 GOP presidential contender attempted to sell his foreign policy vision to fellow Republicans as a middle path between the near-absolute anti-intervention of his (unmentioned) father and the hyper-interventionism of the Washington Republican establishment.

Reaction to the speech varied widely. Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, who has long advocated a less interventionist foreign policy, told reporters "I think I just heard Ronald Reagan speaking." The lefty analysis site Vox enthused that "Rand Paul just gave one of the most important foreign policy speeches in decades" because he "declared war on his own party." The Hill described the address as "anti-isolationist," while neoconservative Washington Post writer Jennifer Rubin scoffed that Paul was "still pretending he's not an isolationist." And so on.

Reason is a major libertarian-ish foundation/magazine here in the US and they've been steadily growing in popularity since I first knew of them many years ago. Their people are always featured on a regular basis on the Jerry Doyle show who's in the top ten biggest radio shows in America.

What a way to close out 2014 on this note. The ultimate symbol of the last 12 months. Cheesy
4506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Time Inc Becomes First Major Magazine Publisher to Accept Bitcoin on: December 16, 2014, 06:37:51 PM
They've probably got the memo that bitcoiners are a sympathetic bunch and normally give financial attaboys to places that start using their stuff. Great way to boost the bottom line and sail into the new year imo.
4507  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time Inc accepts Bicoin on: December 16, 2014, 06:28:41 PM
The only Time article/mag that I ever considered buying was one of the latest ones w/ Rand Paul on the cover. That said, they are total propaganda shop of the highest order.
4508  Economy / Speculation / Re: POLL: are you getting nervous ? on: December 16, 2014, 06:22:38 PM
If you believe in what BTC has to offer then obviously any of these lower prices are great buying opportunities. I plan to liquidate my incoming holiday fiat and scoop up many more coins soon.
4509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Bowl? who what where when why? on: December 16, 2014, 02:15:22 AM
Even though it won't get the attention of the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl, the naming of this one will likely give pause and interest over and above what the other random bowl games get. Keep in mind, it's this time of year when sports fans are really in their glory so hopefully the PR goes well here.
4510  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How to get private key of a coinbase account? on: December 16, 2014, 02:12:12 AM
I would say that a coinbase 'wallet' is in fact one for all intents and purposes for those new to bitcoin and wanting an easy method to buy, sell or hold bitcoin. From there and as one becomes more savvy should they choose, they can then send their balance to another real wallet of their choosing. Even for the bitcoin pros, having one's bank account hooked up to their coinbase account allows for easy selling of bitcoin for FRNs in the event of another bubble should they choose. Finally, it's services like coinbase and others around the world that will allow easy access to the market when the price makes a move and people start panic buying via the eventual media hype.
4511  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-12-14]Bitcoinist- Is Coinbase Giving the Best BTC Approach to Newbies? on: December 16, 2014, 01:53:05 AM
No, any centralised company offering to store people's bitcoins for them are doing their users a disservice in not educating them correctly in how to use bitcoin safely and securely.  Stop letting other companies look after your bitcoin for you, idiots.
They're in business to offer their services like a bank does, just a different market. Nearly all people that work for a living keep their funds in a bank and their retirement in some sort of broker's hands. Face it, it will only be the techies that store their coins in cold storage off the reservation so to speak. In order to get new people feeling safe in this market and shedding us of the bad PR of the past (gox and stuff), it's a must for the likes of coinbase and circle to have the reputations of credit unions in terms of users storing their money, coins or whatever. Agreed, most people keep their gold and silver on hand but this stuff is way different when the average new person is extremely busy w/ work, family, hobbies and whatever else. Just saying.

But as Blockchain.info have just proven, the bad PR will only continue if people keep trusting third parties.  You can't (and shouldn't) compare them with banks.  The argument that we need to move on from gox by repeating the same mistake with a different company makes no sense.  Coinbase, Circle and others could well be ticking timebombs.  Regardless of how busy people are, it doesn't take 5 minutes to hammer home the point that if you don't have sole control over the private keys, you don't have control over your bitcoins.  Get a desktop or mobile wallet and make a few backups.  It's not like it takes a huge amount of time to do that.
I suspect the main goal of the VC money going into these various upstarts is to allow the average person the safety of a third party as you've maintained for yourself. Like, bring the horse close to water and make it as easy as possible for it to take a drink or in our case, buy/use/maintain their finances that are put into Bitcoin. I'm not trying to dispute what you've said but I think it should be common knowledge (around here) that the average person has a room temperature iq and if us as liberty-minded people can't get them to want more of that then we certainly are doomed for failure in getting them to bank themselves and all that that entails. I'd like to embrace the advances in ecosystem technology going forward not hold up my nose at it.

The Courtship: How Rand Paul Became a 'Chamber Republican'
Quote
Rand Paul had screwed up, and he knew it.

It was June and the Kentucky senator was in Texas speaking to a group of tea-party activists when he got loose with his words. "Chamber of Commerce is fine, I was a member of the Chamber of Commerce," Paul told the state's Republican Liberty Caucus. "But a Chamber of Commerce Republican is not going to win a national election."

It was a bold statement for a Republican plotting his own path to presidency. Too bold, he and his advisers realized almost immediately. While Paul has nurtured an iconoclastic libertarian image—stomping across Washington in cowboy boots and jeans, casting himself as a rare Republican willing to go to Berkeley, say, or reach out to black voters—he has also methodically courted the power class here in Washington.

Slapping at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was not part of that game plan. Instead, it represented a political low in his relationship with the nation's most powerful business lobby. But by the fall, Paul wasn't swiping at the business lobby anymore; he was starring in their television ads in four Senate races, including spots to air in crucial early presidential battlegrounds of Iowa and New Hampshire. How Paul recovered from that verbal stumble and resuscitated his relationship with the chamber says a lot about the balancing—some say contortionist—act he is attempting as he readies a White House run.

4514  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Martial Law Mind-Set on: December 15, 2014, 07:01:16 PM
Martial Law in the U.S. takes place all the time. You hear it in the news all the time as well. You guys may hear about it as a governor or any other government official calling it a "State of Emergency". When the boston bombing took place, the police raided dozens upon dozens of homes without a warrant. That's basically martial law but under the guise of something else.
Yeah, insert the meme that this is how freedom dies - with thundering applause as we all saw the footage of the bitches in around boston cheering on the police state in action. Like, have no problem w/ some goon pointing an assault rifle at me if it's to catch some boogeyman.  Roll Eyes If one is far enough away from inner cities and even suburbs to some extent, they should be able to ride out any wave of martial law just fine. Imo, any broad nationwide emergency leading to a fullscale martial law would likely happen in the event of the dollar crash and the have nots not having anything to eat. Better have your emergency food storage and guns w/ plenty of bullets to protect your shit.

4516  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Government confiscation on: December 15, 2014, 06:42:33 PM
Sorry to say but if some interested party was cruising the web and came here to find out about options to safely secure btc and they saw that cold storage (they'd be clueless) was the only sure option out there, then off they go and never return. If we're supposed to be getting regulations in place befitting this stuff to investors and allowing accredited outfits like circle and coinbase (perhaps even blockchain) to handle the masses, we'd better be having more confidence in the latter options for storage. This can't be the tech glee club storage option only coin. There's VC money going into all this stuff for a reason.
4517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is what i like to see, more and more services accepting bitcoins on: December 15, 2014, 06:32:22 PM
Yes, it's nice to see more places accepting coinage for products, tho I don't think those that are in the market for used mattresses will have any btc to pay with. Cheesy
4518  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Anybody here uses Shift or Xapo debit card? on: December 14, 2014, 06:43:36 PM
Xapo definitely needs to work on their PR game because not many in the ecosystem these days likely have a positive image of them. They got a lot of VC money and have seemingly not used it to make themselves occupy any significant useful space to corner the market like the likes of Coinbase or BitPay. I wonder how the vault side of their business is doing..
4519  Other / Archival / Re: , on: December 14, 2014, 06:37:07 PM
Once these ETFs come out and I see how this availability of wealthy new blood takes to the scene and the subsequent affect on the initial pricing, it will determine how I'm thinking about where we could go as far as moon pricing. Furthermore, at that point the craze will have set in and everyone and their brother won't be able to help themselves as panic buying would ensue. This time around, far more people around the world have access to exchanges and ATMs so if is a bubble in the making it could be very large yet I'm not sure if this market is being orchestrated to have a pro-longed bull market or something that just goes violently parabolic again. That's the million dollar question.
4520  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-12-13] Medium: Fast & Steady Progress on: December 13, 2014, 06:44:21 PM
The average enthusiast would likely think that 2014 was the worst year for BTC based merely on the pricing mechanism. Yet, those in the know realize just how much behind the scenes work has been done in the ecosystem making for a much brighter future as we move forward. Be happy you're having the opportunity to grab coins at a great price cuz the roaring twenties will be coming back w/ a vengeance.  Wink
