4501  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question on public keys on: September 30, 2020, 04:10:54 PM
But, I want to know one thing, if supposing an hacker knows the public key, can he make use of the public key to brute force the private key? Or, assuming if the private key is lost, can I use the public key to brute force the private key?
If people can do it, your bitcoin is not safe! It is impossible for now and with the developments of quantum computers, it might take a long period forwards. Even when it will become possible technically, it will still be impossible commercially.

The process from Private key -- Public key -- Bitcoin address is visually expressed as below

Chapter 4 - Key, Addresses, in Mastering Bitcoin 2nd
How Hard Is It to Brute Force a Bitcoin Private Key?
I don't believe Quantum Computing will ever threaten Bitcoin (that topic is a very informative and interesting topic on quantum computing and potential threats on Bitcoin)

To be honest mods doesn't always banning an account if they caught you're doing plagiarism. A newbie account usually got nuked/temporary ban instead of banned since mods still gave him one more chance.

But, for some reason mods will banned quickly if the account is bring negative vibes, repeating his fault, too much plagiarism post etc.
Is it real?

Plagiarism, even one time, when is detected will result in permanent ban [1] [2]. I am not sure that if you are newbie or low rank members you will be free from permanent ban if you make your first plagiarism.

What I know is different and I guess it is what you recalled inaccurately.
  • After get permanent ban because of plagiarism, people are allowed to make ban appeal
  • The prob of ban appeal to be accepted will depend on
    • Net effects: how that user contributes on the forum before that ban.
    • How many times that user make plagiarism (It looks like what you recalled inaccurately)
In reality, when one user break rule of plagiarism, it is usually a plagiarism habit and more than one plagiarism post will be found.

Plagiarism: If you copy some text from somewhere, then you should have a good reason for it, and you must link to the source. Doing otherwise is plagiarism. Changing a few words around doesn't matter. If we find that you plagiarized, then you absolutely will be permanently banned, even if we find it years after you did it.

The site has data on global and local trading volume for P2P marketplaces. There are many charts so I only give you a global chart here. For more details with nations in each geographic area, you need to click on Geographical area name on top of each chart to get it.

First image is for combined volume from Paxful and LocalBitcoins
Second image is for Paxful only.
Third image is another proof that Singapore is one of most active nations in crypto.

4504  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC Twitter Mentions Dropped To 2 Year Low on: September 29, 2020, 04:44:44 AM
I tried to do cross-checking with Google trend and used two keywords (see below). I narrowed down data to last 5 years. It seems the Google Trend charts show currently, statistics are in bottom range (click on links to see charts).

Google Trend has many bias factors and some delayed effects but it reflects general trend of interest in community. From those charts, it seems the latest halving of Bitcoin help it gets more momentum that in turn help its price has tried to reach $14k range. Positively, if consider the interest in community has not yet increased too much (still in bottom range), the chance to see more exponential growth next year is good.

Base on history, BTC price usually takes off one year after its halving days. Please think positively about the findings.  Cheesy
4505  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where do you store your seed? on: September 29, 2020, 01:41:06 AM
I had an electrum seed and wrote it on piece of paper.
....
So i only have the seed written on paper and put it in the house.  But of course things could happen like fire, floods etc.  So what is the best way to store your seed to prevent this?
The best way to back up your seed or private key (depends on which wallet you use) is creating multiple backups and in some different formats: in harddrives, USBs, piece of paper, metal sheet, in vault, etc.

Important note: you must store your backup offline. More precisely, when you create your wallet, you should also create it offline.

Wallet creation (offline) -- Backup storages (offline).

To further avoid risks of potential physical damages (fire, water, flood, etc.), if you can you should store backups in multiple locations.

Never store your wallet backup or passwords of your accounts online. Never should do that! There are always risks of data breaches on any services, not exclude Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.

I then decided to write it on a password program like lastpass/keepass.  So in order to get into the lastpass, you need a password.  And i put the lastpass in dropbox/google drive and store it there.  My thought was if someone somehow hacked into my gmail/dropbox, well they still need the password to my lastpass in order to get into my electrum seed.  I put the electrum seed in there as i type it out a long with my other bank account and everything whether its online site or anything

Quote
But isn't the issue if someone finds it, well its pretty easy to see oh why is there a bunch of long words and some ppl might even figure out its the seed to a wallet?

Now if you write the seed in a notebook with a ton of stuff there, well that would be hard for someone to find.
Basically, the device you use to store your backup should also be kept as much offline as posisble (almost like a cold-backup-storage device).

Quote
Also i hear ppl say break your seed into two or three parts.  That makes sense but do you leave all the parts in the same house/apartment?  You hear about how you give one half to someone else you trust, you keep other half.  Well what if you no longer see the other person anymore or something happens, then what?  Obviously you would need to immediately send your coins to a temporary wallet in the meantime.
It is one of the way to complicate things. I would not go to such thing for a single wallet with a single seed/ private key. The biggest disadvantage of this method is sometimes people forgot how they mixed things, and can not recover wallet later. It sucks when you self-create troubles this way.

An alternative for you is multi-signature wallet. You can easily create it with Electrum wallet. You will have to choose how many co-signers who will sign signatures and unlock funds in that wallet. It is safer.

4507  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: For your ready reference on cryptocurrency exchange! on: September 28, 2020, 06:41:42 AM
You can get list of top exchanges (spot, DEX, derivatives) from 2 websites:
Each site has different algorithms to filter and sort out exchanges, you should visit those sites and get your own experiences. It seems that coingecko.com gives you more advanced filter options. I think those images can help you so I skip descriptive steps.

Coinmarketcap.com

Coingecko.com
On coingecko.com, after customize your filter (with cryptocurrencies, suggested currencies, fiat currencies, commodity, and countries) you can get list for 3 main filter categories: Overview, Cybersecurity (New), Social. Read their explanation on Trust score

Edit: If you need more, you can get more in [BIG LIST] Buy/Sell Crypto (OTC, P2P, DEXs, CEXs, NO-KYC, ATMs, etc.)
4508  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some important bitcointalk [GUIDE] for beginners. on: September 28, 2020, 04:33:57 AM
About searching, I have a tip for you:
  • If you know username of one user, and want to find one of his threads but don't remember keywords for his thread title/ contents, you can visit the hidden page: https://bitcointalk.org/gettopics.php?user=2614133 (replace userid). When you see a list of thread, you can easier find what you are looking for.
If ever I felt lazy searching for good threads from a certain member and forget the thread title so what I did is search the member and go to profile then show the last topic created by this person and then next and next until you will be able to find the thread you are looking for. Your tip also work since I also did it.
You can also change the userid.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;threads;u=2807282;sa=showPosts
It is more convenient and save your time to load pages if the user you are aiming at has too many topics. You have to load images, text of their topics. To help you better understand potential inconvenience, you can visit the post history page of Ratimov -- who is a topic-productive and his topics have too many images.  Cheesy

With my tip, you can have a list of their topics by default. You can be able to narrow down the list by specific board (use &board=boardid at the end).

If one user uses good topic title that represents what the topic discusses about, it is enough to look at topic title when you are in searching.
4509  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Questions about transaction fees on: September 28, 2020, 03:44:00 AM
Transaction fee will depend on the congestion and traffic on the network. For now due to high volume of transactions per second try to check binance which I took a screenshot in their site.
image loading...
Probably with these high traffic will generate high dand for the miners and since more users wanted fast transaction they will tend to pay high disregard the transaction fee.

So whenever you wanted to make a small fee from transaction chose a day and time where you can save like others were mentioning about sunday as the best time to make transaction due to low traffic of transaction being made.
1,400,000 transactions per second on Bitcoin network, really?

Where did you get the image? Would you mind sharing it, please.

The approximate average TPS of the Bitcoin blockchain is about 5 – though this may vary at times.
From blockchair.com, the statistics for transactions per second is ~ 3.05.

It is not true. The mempool gave you opportunities to move bitcoin at 1 satoshi/(v)byte for some latest hours (get first confirmation in next one block). It has been topped up more last 1 hour but there still is chance to move BTC at 1 satoshi/(v)byte with a little waiting time. With 2 satoshi/(v)byte, you will get fast confirmation in next one block.

But you need to hurry up because I expect mempool will be loaded more. It's already Monday.

What could be the forum stand against this scam? Are we really being helpful for spreading awareness or not? I do not know if there are statistics that could prove that spreading awareness could help new users to get away from fraud and scams. Sad to say that the information on this scam had been made already here with more and more users posting related topics but still there are some users get scam and being fraud.
The forum has its Scam accusations board and helpful guides. I thought they are enough to help newbies. The rest responsibility is their own attitude to read and learn. Last but not least, people must control their own greed activities.

Beyond the forum, there are many educational articles from blogs, websites, exchanges, crypto academies (you can find many articles with Google) but people still get scammed. It is their responsibilities, not anyone else. They have to change their attitude, then read more, learn more and practice more to better control their investment behavior.

Binance has its Binance academy and you can find the article: 5 common cryptocurrency scams and how to avoid them. Unfortunately, I doubt most of Binance users read that article  Roll Eyes

Collection of comprehensive guides on identify and avoid scam projects

The most common and traditional scam method is PONZI, MLM. This scam method is used by scammers in society for too long. In specific period, they will try to abuse a specific are in one nation, from sell, medicine, agriculture to crypto. They switch around different area to scam.

On social media or messenger platforms, impersonation scam is too common. It is easy to detect impersonators if you know basic investigation steps (account ages, number of followers, audit scores, badge, username, account ID number, etc.)

The DeFi trend brings another scam type (it is not new but nowadays it is too popular). Scammers create new projects with same or similar token names to steal money from investors. To avoid this scam trap, please make sure to check smart contract address (smart contract addresses are always different for different projects), decimal of the token. Furthermore, do double or tripple checks on different DeFi market-capitalization websites. Make sure you spend capital to exactly a token you want to invest in.

Overview on DeFi (get list of DeFi market-capitalization sites there).

4513  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cyber attack could be very dangerous on: September 27, 2020, 06:52:09 AM
Install a good security antivirus software on your device for protection( this doesn't cost more than $70) . This has been the best way to keep our device safe from the hands of these hackers, if your device is protected then your money will be safe in your device. Thousands of crypto holders never care to install good security apps in their device and when hack cry fowls.
Spending funds to buy and install trusted AV softwares are good but it is not the best way to protect your devices and your accounts, then funds from hackers. The best way is maintaining your healthy web-surfing behaviour.

Reason is AV softwares are only detect well-known threats or new threats that are similar to old ones already are stored in their database. Hueristic can help but it is not a complete safe-guard for your safety. Don't rely on AV softwares blindly like that.

In my opinion, the orders of importance are:
  • Healthy web-surfing behaviour
  • Second layer protection from trusted AV softwares

The story Hacker blackmailing me and ask for money. Did you also get this email? is a bad one from non-healthy web-surfing.

Virustotal and any other AV software can only recognize malware by 2 approaches:
  • Heuristics
  • Behavior analysis

Regarding Heuristics:
If the malware is either 1) new or 2) modified so that these AV's don't have it in their database yet -> No Heuristic to match the malware with.

Regarding Behavior analysis:
If the malware does not run malicious code when being analyzed (can be done with multiple techniques, e.g. checking whether being run in a sandbox) -> Not triggering the behavior analysis.

Now, if we combine these two statements, it becomes clear that it is quite easy to create malware which is completely undetected from AV's (at least until enough people have been infected with it and AV's have manually reviewed and sigged the malware as such).

Using AV's (whether paid ones on your computer, or online services like virustotal) does only protect you against 1) known and very wide-spread malware and 2) malware created by script-kiddies or any other non-commercial cyber criminals.
4514  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Telegram is trash on: September 27, 2020, 06:44:54 AM
Everything in life can be abused by bad people, include scammers.

Telegram itself has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
  • Real time conversation
  • Funny
  • It self-desstroyed features (you can set up period a specific secret conversation will be destroyed)

Disadvantages:
  • Spam
  • Difficult to manage updates by categories (developments, news, promotions, etc.). You can do it better on Discord.
  • Scammers are around
  • Be invited to join many scam, signal groups if you don't customize your privacy settings

About scammers, you need to know how to detect them:
- They tend to fake admins, moderators by put usernames of admins, moderators in their Bio areas. Remember they hide their usernames but try to scam others with Bio (that shows usernames of admins or moderators). Real admins or moderators show their usernames.
- If a scammer account get enough scam reports from community and are handled well by Telegram, their accounts will have a Scam badge.

You can help community by report scammers you see.

Clear facts about Bitcoin Yearly Lows.  Cheesy

  • year: Calendar year
  • btcprice: Lowest price of Bitcoin each year.
  • percent_change: % of changes in bitcoin price between 2 consecutive years.

Results:
  • In 11 observed years (2010 to 2020), 10 years witness higher yearly low price of bitcoin. The only exception is year 2015 which has 73.3% lower price compares to the price of 2014.
  • Median (interquartile range): 66.1 (13.7 - 92.5). In 50% of those years, bitcoin lowest price (yearly) increase ~66%

I made a time-series plot for the Bitcoin Yearly lows. During the 11 observed-years (2020 is not yet completed), only the yearly low in 2015 at $150 is lower than the yearly low of previous year (2014 at $260). For the rest 10 years, Bitcoin always has higher yearly lows over years.

In percent of price changes between 2 consecutive years, we have data like these:
Code:
