4541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help Needed Recovering old wallet.dat file from 2011 on: April 01, 2019, 09:02:16 AM
So I tried this before I got into pywallet because I read a post about some versions of pywallet being modified to steal bitcoins. I knew it would take some time for me to figure all that out. Anyway, I found this on reddit in response to a guy who had 18 btc in a corrupt wallet. It worked, it loaded the wallet without the corruption error, unfortunately it showed 0 btc   Sad
One possible flaw in the listed method, for your particular case, is that as your "corrupt" wallet was VERY old, it is most likely a "non-HD" wallet... that is to say, it isn't deterministic, and will only contain "randomly generated" private keys...

So, by cutting off a portion of the wallet, even if it loads, it might well be missing private keys that contain coins... and the "fixed" version of the wallet won't be able to regenerate any "missing" keys, as it will just randomly generate new private keys.

HD Bitcoin Core wallets were not a "thing" until August 2016 with version 0.13.0 and you're talking about a wallet from 2011...

Anyway, here is the selfie...

4543  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help Needed Recovering old wallet.dat file from 2011 on: March 31, 2019, 01:53:55 AM
I took at my old files and I do have an address.dat file.  Do you know of a way to get my old address off of that?

According to the wiki...
addr.dat [Versions prior to v0.7.0]
 - Storage for ip addresses to make a reconnect easier

So I doubt that the file you have, has anything related to your wallet or biutcoin addresses in it. Undecided

No, the old wallet was a bitcoin wallet.

Today I tried electrum and got the error.  The seed I found was not the old seed, it was the new seed Sad I might have written itdown somewhere else but who knows...
I am confused, because you keep talking about "seeds"??!? Huh Bitcoin Core never utilised "seed mnemonics" (aka 12 word phrases etc) as a backup system. So, unless you are also attempting to recover a completely unrelated Electrum/BIP39 wallet... any seeds you may or may not have written down are completely irrelevant, with regards to recovering your Bitcoin Core wallet.
4544  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: March 31, 2019, 01:44:42 AM
Okay so the 3rd option of just updating the firmware to 1.5.5 and then trying to download bitcoin cash and gold wallet isn't an option?
Most likely not... because:

a. You'll more than likely need to uninstall all the apps so the "updater" can be loaded onto the device
and
b. After you update to firmware 1.5.5... BCH app and BTG app available in "Manager" will be at 1.3.8, but the BTC app already on your device will be < v1.3.2... BCH and BTG apps rely on the BTC app. You will get an error when you try to install higher version BCH and BTG telling you that you need to update BTC app first.

So, like I said... you have two options.
4545  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: March 30, 2019, 10:25:10 PM
You don't get updates that the coinapp versions have updated... you only get notifications that Ledger Live version can be updated and that the firmware version can be updated.

At this point you can:

1. uninstall all apps from your device... install Bitcoin, install Bitcoin Cash, install Bitcoin Gold (optionally install Waves, it isn't required for claiming BCH and BTG)

or

2. uninstall all apps from your device... update firmware to 1.5.5, install Bitcoin, install Bitcoin Cash, install Bitcoin Gold (optionally install waves)

With either option, you should be able to get BCH and BTG
4546  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help Needed Recovering old wallet.dat file from 2011 on: March 30, 2019, 10:21:18 PM
Thanks. I did write down the seed, I found that the other day.
If you have a "seed that you wrote down"... then you didn't have Bitcoin Core. Bitcon Core has never used "12 word seed mnemonics".

I have electrum, just tried to import the old wallet and got this message: "Cannot read file"
And why is -salvagewallet a last resort? I tried that back in Sept when I first found the file.
If it was an Electrum wallet file... and you attempted to load it into Bitcoin Core using -salvagewallet, you probably corrupted the wallet file. Hence why Electrum will no longer be able to read it. "salvagewallet" tries it's best to extract keys, but will irrevocably change the wallet file... so if it wasn't a Bitcoin Core wallet file, it will likely end up corrupted.

So, if you have an Electrum seed, use Electrum, create new wallet file, use "standard wallet -> I already have a seed" option and input the seed... wallet will be regenerated.
4547  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: March 30, 2019, 09:57:43 PM
1.  Hi there.  I have the 24 word phrase put somewhere at the moment and will look for it in a bit.  I wrote the 24 word phrase a while back when i first got it.  I never did test the 24 word phrase so to speak.  But i did make sure i looked carefully at all the word before writing each one extremely carefully.  There was an app i recalled in the app where you could test your 24 word phrase that you mentioned not long ago.  But i cannot do this now right since i cant install anything?
It's called "Recovery Check"... you should be able to install that regardless of what else you have installed on the device... although, it might be a Firmware 1.5.5 feature.

Quote
2.  Okay so when i remove waves and bitcoin wallet from the ledger, it will still show the amount of btc i have there and the balance of it right?  When i uninstall bitcoin, will i see the accounts (1) bitcoin under it there or not?  I just don't want any surprises as a little thing like that would freak me out.
It won't change anything in Ledger Live

Quote
3.  I see new version of bitcoin to install is 1.3.2.  So there is no way to know what version im using now right?  Okay so because i didn't bother installing any new apps the last few months and didn't do any update to the ledger live until today, this is the reason im having this issue?  Thus say you haven't touched it for 2 months.  Then you notice you could update ledger live and do it.  You will have issues like this?  But say you are someone who use it almost every other day etc, then there would be no issue since you would update ledger live when necessary?  Or that wouldn't even work because when bitcoin app updates to like 1.4 or 1.5, you wouldn't know about it and everyone eventually have the same exact issue here?
To know what version you are using... on the device, open the bitcoin app, and then scroll to "about" and select that. It'll show you the version currently installed.

If you only see 1.3.2 in Ledger Live... then you'll most likely need to update to Firmware 1.5.5. to see Bitcoin 1.3.8.

Quote
May i ask what firmware you are using now?  Are you using 1.4.2 or 1.5.5?  I just want to make sure i do the same thing as you.
1.5.5
4548  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: March 30, 2019, 09:35:20 PM
Then it shows the release note and says your 24 word phrase is not required but make sure its within reason as a precaution.
I do not have the 24 word phrase with me at the moment.  So i should not do this right now?
Up to you... it *shouldn't* wipe the device... but as they say, if something does go wrong, and you end up having to completely wipe/reset the Nano, then you'll need the 24 words to restore the device.

Quote
Or do I just do what you say and uninstall all the apps first?  You say uninstall bitcoin last.  I only have waves and bitcoin wallet i believe?  How do i know which wallet i have in it?  Because when i scroll through it, there is waves, bitcoin, settings and it goes back to waves.  So i only have 2 right?
If you only see Bitcoin and Waves listed on the device... they are they only coin apps you have installed.

Quote
And when i uninstall waves and then bitcoin, then install bitcoin, bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold right?  Then install waves since im planning to use it later on?
Yes

Quote
There is nothing that can go wrong when i uninstall waves and bitcoin right?
No.

Quote
When i uninstall bitcoin, that mean the ledger live will show i have no bitcoin there in the portfolio or accounts right?  But once i download bitcoin wallet right afterwards from manager, it should be there?  Or i download it and then press plus and create account so it look like how it does now?
No... that's not how it works... once an account is "imported" into Ledger Live, it stays there until you remove it... it makes no difference what apps you have installed on the device itself.

When you add the coinapps to the Nano, it won't automatically accounts into Ledger Live... you will need to click the "+" to add accounts, then select which ones you want to add to Ledger Live.

Quote
But if i can't install bitcoin 1.3 etc after all of this, then install the firmware to 1.5.5 right?  Which firmware are you using now?  Do you know why in the world i have this issue where i cannot install bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold etc?  I mean i just updated ledger live now... why doesn't that solve the issue?
Because you don't have the latest Bitcoin app on the device... it isn't that you need Bitcoin installed... you need the LATEST bitcoin app installed.

Ok... first of all... LEARN TO USE THE EDIT BUTTON FFS!!?! Stop multiposting... it is VERY annoying and actually against the rules... If you think of new questions, and nobody has posted after you... simply edit your post and put ALL the questions together in ONE post...  Angry

So that is legacy.  But do you know why the other person thought it might be segwit?
Because Electrum supports both... so they were checking.

1.  Download Electron cash ... make sure its the legit one
Yes

Quote
2.  Then type in i already have a seed.  Last time you said you could copy/paste the file there or manually type in the 12 word seed.  You seed its better putting the file because you are not exposed to it unlike typing the 12 word seed.  But where is this file on my computer?  So you say do this as oppose to type it out?  I want to do it exactly like you but where is this electrum file so to speak?
Just use the 12 word seed... trying to find and use the electrum wallet file is unnecessary.

Quote
3.  I downloaded the bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold programs into my nano ledger s a while back BUT THIS WAS WITH THE CHROME LEDGER... NOT THE LEDGER LIVE.  At the moment, im using ledger live as others here recommended b/c the chrome app is outdated.  When i check my nano ledger and scroll through it, it seems the only coin wallets i installed is btc and waves only right if i scroll and there is only bitcoin, waves and then settings and nothing more?  I however did not connect the waves wallet to it yet.  So basically i only have btc there now.  When you go to accounts under ledger live, there is 1 account and its called btc.
You actually don't have any coins "on your ledger"... Coins are NOT held in wallets... coins are recorded and listed on the blockchain... Simply put, all a wallet (like Ledger or Electrum) does is hold private keys that allow you to sign transactions to spend coins...

I don't know why you're so hung up about Chrome Webapps and Ledger Live... simply use Ledger Live like it was the Chrome app... it is essentially the same thing... an interface to interact with your Ledger Nano S device. It allows you to install/uninstall coin apps on the device... and view your "accounts"

Quote
So now i have to download bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold wallet from the manager tab right?  Download bitcoin cash and bitcoin gold one after another?  However when i do this, the only question it will ask me for bitcoin cash wallet is legacy or segwit right?  And because the addresses in my electrum wallet start with a number 1, its legacy?  The thing is, would it ask me anything else like is it a split or something like that?  When looking at the thread earlier, when i installed bitcoin cash and gold wallet into my nano ledger s when i used the bitcoin ledger on chrome, i recalled you mentioned i had to make sure i make sure it was so and so.  But since im using ledger live now, is the only message it will ask me after installing bitcoin cash wallet into ledger live via ledger live is legacy or segwit and thats it?  Then after i do that, install bitcoin gold wallet and it would not ask me anything or it would ask me?
It probably won't ask you anything... it'll probably automatically scan for accounts... when it can't find any transactions, because you have none... then you'll be able to choose

Quote
4.  After this, do i need to click the plus button and add more accounts in ledger live?  It shows 1 account and its bitcoin only.  I see if you click on the plus sign, you could add bitcoin cash or bitcoin gold and other coins.  Is this necessary since im claiming bitcoin cash and gold and have it sent to ledger live?
Well obviously, Yes. If you want to be able to create BCH and BTG addresses to send to, you're going to need to have set it up on both the device and within Ledger Live. Click add accounts, choose the coin types you want to add (Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold).

Quote
5.  So after i enter the information from electroncash, i will have the bitcoin cash showing on the wallet similar to like how it displays bitcoin in electrum wallet right?  So when i view this wallet, i should first send a small amount of bitcoin cash to the nano ledger s just to make sure it works first before sending the entire balance right?  Also what about the fee?  Better to send it with faster speed right?
BCH doesn't need big fees... the network load is low and the block size is massive... use the lowest fee, you'll likely get next block confirmation.

Quote
6.  With the bitcoin gold claim.  You mention you could do this with a computer?  What program you need for this?  Someone a while back said you could use an android phone and use coinomi to sweep the bitcoin gold so to speak... then you send it to your bitcoin gold wallet.  At the moment, i do have access to an android phone.  So which of these would you recommend?
Use this Bitcoin "Electrum"-like wallet: https://bitcoingold.org/electrumg/

Actually from the steps i listed, first install bitcoin cash and gold first in my ledger first before installing electron cash right?  Then the bitcoin gold thing?  That way it would be much faster?
You will need to:

1. Install Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold "apps" on your Ledger device
2. Create BCH and BTG accounts on Ledger Live and get BCH and BTG addresses.
2. Install Electron Cash, create wallet using 12 word seed, send Bitcoin Cash to Bitcoin Cash address from Ledger
3. Install ElectrumG, create wallet using 12 word seed, send Bitcoin Gold to Bitcoin Gold address from Ledger

You are DONE. It's not that complicated... or "dangerous" Roll Eyes

Tried to install bitcoin gold app first from Manager.
Message shows bitcoin and eth apps required.  Install the latest bitcoin and eth apps first.
I already have btc app installed.  So i then tried to install btc app and it says i already have it...
So i need to install ETH app even though i don't have eth?
No, it's an incorrect message... you DON'T need ETH... but you DO need the most up-to-date BTC app (version 1.3.8 when this was writtent)... chances are you have an old version installed on the device. Simply, uninstall ALL the apps from the device (you'll need to uninstall Bitcoin LAST)... Then, install Bitcoin (should be 1.3.Cool, then install Bitcoin Cash (1.3.Cool, then install Bitcoin Gold (1.3.Cool.

Okay i just clicked on update ledger live as i saw this.  It did updated.  Firmware version shows 1.4.2.  But next to it shows firmware version 1.5.5 is available.  Do i update the firmware first before downloading the bitcoin gold and cash wallets?
You should be able to stay with firmware 1.4.2 I think... however, if you have issues installing BTC, BCH and BTG apps, then update the firmware to 1.5.5.
4551  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum Brain Wallet ? on: March 30, 2019, 09:33:15 AM
hey, i was asking how do you generate deterministic seeds
You open Electrum, you select "File -> New/Restore -> [insert wallet name] -> Standard wallet -> Create a new seed"... Electrum will generate a nice shiny new random deterministic seed mnemonic (aka the "12 words") for you...

Otherwise, if you're asking how to go about creating a seed... well, simply put a seed is just a REALLY large number... so you need a way to randomly generate a REALLY large number... common methods are using dice or coin flips etc...

Once you have that seed, you'd then need to follow the Electrum process for converting that seed into a seed mnemonic... ie. the "12 words"... it's similar to the way BIP39 works when converting from REALLY large number to "words", but has some "added extras" like a "seed version" included which BIP39 does not.

Again... seed = really large number... seed mnemonic = "12 words"
4552  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Claiming Bitcoin Cash and Gold On New Computer and Nano Ledger S? on: March 30, 2019, 08:50:06 AM
Hi there.  When you say enter seed words and then choose type of address... you say its probably legacy... how would i know if its that or segwit?  Are there only 2 options?  So how i know for sure?  If i put in legacy but its segwit, there will be issue?

So how i know if the address i have is probably legacy?  If it isn't then what will happen?  How do i know if my electrum was legacy or segwit?

If your Electrum addresses start with "1"? --> Then it is guaranteed to be "Legacy"

If your Electrum addresses start with a "3"... there is a chance your addresses were SegWit, but isn't likely unless you specifically created the Electrum wallet to be SegWit... However, if they are "3", they're more likely to be part of either a 2FA or multisig wallet... it won't be "easy" to claim the BCH, but can be achieved with a lot of manual effort.

If your Electrum addresses start with "bc1"... then you're shit outta luck... as they are guaranteed to be SegWit... and BCH doesn't support SegWit... no way for a typical end user to recover these coins.
4553  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How to test 24 words on: March 30, 2019, 08:41:54 AM
It's not part of Ledger Live per se... it is an "app" that you install on the Ledger Device itself, via the "Manager" in Ledger Live, like all the other coin apps like "Bitcoin", "Doge", "Ethereum"... or the "Fido U2F" Universal 2nd factor app etc...

I don't think this was available prior to Ledger Live, so I don't think it was ever in the Chrome App Ledger Manager... prior to that Chrome app effectively being taken offline.
4554  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Recent transaction not showing up in wallet on: March 28, 2019, 09:42:29 PM
I have noticed my electrum wallet is version 3.2.3 while the latest version is 3.2.4.
Latest version is 3.3.4... you should download it from here: https://electrum.org/#download

Quote
Will uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version affect my wallet  Huh i am worried loading a new version will wipe the slate clean.
Uninstalling Electrum will not remove your wallet. It won't "wipe the slate clean"... and in any case, you can easily recreate the wallet from your 12 word seed mnemonic. So, prior to upgrading, ensure you have your 12 word seed mnemonic safely written down. You can use the "Wallet -> Seed" menu option in the wallet to display your seed again if you don't have it written down already.

Quote
At the moment my wallet still hasn't picked up the transaction, will updating to the new version fix this?
Yes, the old version is the reason you cannot see your transaction. As stated on the Electrum website:
Warning: Electrum versions older than 3.3 can no longer connect to public servers, and must be upgraded. This is in order to prevent user exposure to phishing messages. Do not download Electrum from any another source than electrum.org.

Updating to the newest version will resolve your issue.

Quote
I fear already sending the bitcoins to an old version has made me lose those coins...
You have not lost your coins, they are recorded on the blockchain... so if you upgrade, you will see your transaction once the wallet is able to connect to the servers and sync properly. Smiley

4555  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bitcoin transfer confirmation on: March 28, 2019, 09:16:39 PM
It still isn't very clear, as you aren't quoting/replying correctly... So let's try and break it down:

1. You were trying to buy something on Dark Web market
2. You needed to pay with Bitcoin Cash
3. You bought Bitcoins on LocalBitcoins and then sent 0.0353258 BTC to 1DG7hAnQ6ML5RWZxnivr3JdDActBaV3azT
4. Dark Web market has not credited your account

If that is correct, then the only people who can help you are the Dark Web market... Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash are two completely different currencies... think of it like United States Dollars and Chinese Yuan. Marketplace wants Chinese Yuan (Bitcoin Cash)... and you sent them United States Dollars (Bitcoin)!

However, the very confusing thing... is that you said the "link provided" was for address "1DG7hAnQ6ML5RWZxnivr3JdDActBaV3azT"... that is usually a Bitcoin address... Bitcoin Cash addresses generally use a different format (most addresses start with a "q" like this: qqf0fah6qzmsymef2pcvg9l6xqhqnppcpsfkmdz495) to prevent this kind of mix up! Huh

So... the two most likely scenarios are:

1. The dark web market is actually a scam, and you sent your bitcoins... and you're not going to get anything.
2. For some reason the dark web market is using a very "old" Bitcoin Cash address format... and you sent Bitcoins to a Bitcoin Cash wallet.

In both scenarios, the only party who can resolve this issue is the dark web market. Contact them and hope for the best.

4557  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: ADVICE PLEASE - Upgrading/Using Ledger Live Manager ? on: March 28, 2019, 08:37:11 PM
I just thought about adding it as Ledger sent me an email stating they support ADA, mine Ledger is already linked to my desktop Daedalus wallet anyway, so the ONLY difference is that it can be viewed/added to the ledger live portfolio i presume.
Again... to clarify... the Ledger Live portfolio only supports 23 coins as of version 1.6.0 of the Ledger Live software... the following coins are listed in the drop-down box when you add an "account" to your portfolio:

Any coins or tokens that are not on this list, cannot be added to your Ledger Live portfolio... and can only be viewed/spent using other 3rd party wallets/services in conjuction with your Ledger device.

Is it worth it i'm not sure?
Yes... it is miles better than the old chrome webapps... for one, it is updated and supported and as far as I'm aware, basically required if you need to use Ledger Manager (update firmware, install/uninstall apps to the device etc)... as the chrome app no longer works.

Additionally, it allows you to view all the app-supported (but not all device-supported) coins in one place, at the same time... instead of having to use multiple chrome webapps to view wallets... or having to change from one coin-type to the other etc.

Also, because it is a native app, performance is better and seems to work more reliably than the old chrome webapps... and you also get the "watching-only" functionality (protected by a password) that allows you to simply open the app and view your portfolio without even needing to have the device connected.

Granted, if you deal with a bunch of non-Ledger Live supported tokens and coins, the benefits may be somewhat limited... but you'll need it to update firmware anyway.

If the rule was changed in the middle of the campaign then it's not a professional act by the BM imo.
The change itself a blackmailing theoretically - "Do this or Do that, otherwise you won't get paid."
Not only that, but this "requirement" is, in my opinion, akin to "thread bumping"... they're basically creating "fake volume" of this token on the exchange by forcing anyone who wants to get paid into creating trades! No doubt generating "fake buzz" (to apparently assist with "listing on UPBIT"), as well as allowing the exchange to skim value by way of trading fees Undecided

Very dubious behaviour by the project... Making such a fundamental change to requirements in the middle of the campaign. It's classic "bait and switch".
4559  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: ADVICE PLEASE - Upgrading/Using Ledger Live Manager ? on: March 28, 2019, 12:57:58 AM
Is it just as simple as downloading and it will work as normal and all coins will show in the app?
Yes, it is pretty much just as simple as downloading and it will work as normal... unfortunately, No... not all "ledger supported" coins will show in the app. Undecided

The Ledger Live app only supports the coins as shown here: https://www.ledger.com/pages/supported-crypto-assets (23 as of version 1.6.0)

The other coins can still be accessed via MEW, MCW or their own individual apps like IOTA and ADA etc. as you are currently using them now.

Quote
The reason i am asking is that i have coins Like ADA, IOTA etc that are still accessed using their individual apps/programs (they are still signed/accessed with my wallet/Ledger)
Do i just install it and all will be good? Will they all just appear ?? Or will it ONLY show the amount of coins that Ledger Nano is capable of storing?
The Ledger Live app will let you configure which (Live supported) coins you want to display in the app... and is NOT related to which coin apps you have loaded on the Ledger device itself... Except for the initial configuration of each coin "account" within the app... you have to have the coin app on the Ledger device to be able to create the account for that specific coin within Ledger Live:

However, after you have set a coin account up, it doesn't even matter if your Ledger device is even connected to the PC, you will be able to see all the (Live supported) coin accounts, balances and transactions for the accounts that you have already created.

Quote
I am weary of doing so as i hold a fair amount of BTC/BCH/XRP etc
What would you do as it is a PAIN uninstalling/installing coins it supports all the time.
Will the Ledger Live Manager negate this??
On insofar that you won't have to uninstall/install coin apps on the device to SEE your (Live supported) coin accounts that have already been created... but you'll still need to have the coin apps installed on the Ledger device to:
- Create an "account" in Ledger Live App for that specific coin
or
- Send Transactions for that specific coin

TL;DR:

Essentially, Ledger Live acts as a "watching-only" wallet... and it only needs the coin app installed during setup so it can properly generate the correct "xpub(s)" for that coin so it can create the right account(s) etc. Once setup with the xpub(s) imported, Ledger Live will open and only show what you have explicitly setup to show... regardless of coin apps installed on the device or if the device is even connected.
